New Delhi : As many as 89 institutions including 17 institutes of national importance such as IIM-Bangalore, IITMumbai, IIT-Kharagpur, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, and National Institutes of Design, have been served show-cause notices by University Grants Commission (UGC) for violating its AntiRagging Regulations, 2009.

Five institutions from Tamil Nadu, including Annamalai University, Jeppiar University, SASTRA and IIMTrichy have also been served the notices. The UGC, in its June 9 notice, said: “Your institution has failed to submit the mandatory anti-ragging undertakings by students and compliance undertaking by your institution, despite multiple advisories issued by the UGC, follow-up calls from the anti-ragging helpline, and direct interventions by the anti-ragging monitoring agency”.

Asking the institutions to treat the matter with utmost seriousness, the commission warned that failure to comply within 30 days may result in “withdrawal of UGC grants and funding, impacting financial assistance and research projects”.

UGC secretary Manish Joshi said the action was taken to ensure institutional accountability, regulatory discipline, and student safety. Institutions that fail to act may be publicly listed as noncompliant with norms on UGC website and face regulatory action, including derecognition. Altogether, 41 state govt-run universities are on the list.
