When Collector turned teacher

The absence of a couple of teachers provided a good opportunity to the class III students of the Panchayat Union Primary School at Karutharajapalayam village, near Attur, to experience the teaching ability of District Collector Rohini P. Bhajibhakare on Thursday.

Surprise check

The Collector conducted surprise check at the primary health centre at Thammampatti, and fair price shop and anganwadi centre in Karutharajapalayam village.

Later, Ms. Bhajibhakare visited the Panchayat Union Primary School in Karutharajapalayam, when she spotted the students of class III sitting idle, following the absence of teachers.

According to official sources, the teachers were taking part in the indefinite strike called by JACTTO-GEO.

Taken aback, the Collector rushed to the class and started teaching the students.

According to officials who accompanied the Collector during the inspection, she took Tamil class for half-an-hour and taught English for another half-an-hour, much to the delight of the students. On receiving the news of the visit of Collector, the local people gathered at the school and thanked her for the gesture.

Report sought

The Collector later directed the School Education Department officials to send her a report on the absence of teachers.

Latest technology to treat 100% blocked arteries

Chennai: As many as 100 cardiologists participated at the Chronic Total Occlusion (CTO) workshop held at Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Vanagaram, on Wednesday, to get a hands-on experience on the sophisticated procedure enabling them to save lives.

Participating at the workshop, Dr Maoto Habara, chief physician, cardiovascular medicine, Toyohashi Heart Centre, Japan, demonstrated some specialised CTO technique.

“Even 100 per cent blockages can be treated with angioplasty. Patients with cent per cent block in the coronary artery are usually referred to undergo a bypass surgery, and however, with angioplasty we can remove the blockage completely. This advanced CTO angioplasty procedure can significantly improve a patient’s quality of life, heart function, reduce the requirement for subsequent bypass surgery and enhance the chances of long-term survival.”

“An additional benefit is that post-operational healing time is generally much shorter like angioplasty compared with open heart surgery,’ he said.

“Patients with CTOs are usually referred to an open heart surgery. In such cases, doctors open the chest to operate. The surgery leaves a scar and needs long hospital stay and recovery time. Japanese people believe that if one’s chest is opened, the soul departs. The advanced CTO angioplasty procedure can significantly improve the heart function and patient’s quality of life,” said Dr Anand Gnanaraj, senior consultant, interventional cardiologist, Apollo Hospitals, Ayanambakkam.

On the occasion, Apollo Hospitals launched a centre of excellence for CTO at its Vanagaram branch. More than 500 patients were treated in the last five years in Apollo Hospitals with the CTO angioplasty. The workshop was held to spread awareness about the existence of such a procedure and provided training to cardiologists, which can benefit patients.

Dr Maoto Habara, who has performed over 1,000 CTO angioplasties at Toyohashi Heart Centre performed this intricate procedure on a 76-year-old woman at Apollo facility and interacted with the cardiologists from across the country about advanced techniques in interventional cardiology.

Asked about the facilities in Apollo Hospitals, Dr Maoto Habara said, ‘Here they have the best and the latest equipment like IVUS, a technology that is used only in very few places.’

What is CTO?

Chronic Total Occlusion (CTO) occurs when the coronary artery is completely blocked with fatty deposits inside its walls for more than three months. It causes chest pain and breathlessness. These blocks are made up of hardened tissues that are difficult to cross using routine guide wires and balloon catheters. Unlike the routine angioplasty, Japanese have developed highly specialised wires, balloons and catheters that are specifically used for treating CTO.

Lack of street lights in Chennai worry residents

Chennai: Poorly-lit streets or those without any lights pose danger to those who reside in Thambu Swamy First Cross Street in Kilpauk.

Women say they find it difficult to use the stretch after dark. They complain that vehicles slow down when they come near or at times people on the stretch pass lewd comments.

These women have no option but to use this stretch. At times, their guiding light is the torch in their mobile phones or the headlights of vehicles passing by.

‘Poor or lack of streetlights are perceived dangerous. If the place was well-illuminated, it would reduce fear among us. It would make the street safe for women and senior citizens,’ said Aruna, an IT employee.

‘The entire stretch is pitch dark and there are not enough street lights. This poses difficulties for pedestrians and motorists. Inadequate lighting leaves the layout prone to chain-snatching and robberies.

“The road gets worse during the rainy season and accidents take place frequently,’” said Sadhana, a resident.

“When the complaint was taken to the notice of the officials, they had said they would instal LED bulbs soon. But still there is no response from them. No action has been taken to instal streetlights. ‘I get down at Ega Theatre and it hardly takes 15 minutes to walk to my house from there. But I take an auto, because it is not safe to walk alone in the night,”’ said Ramya, a college student.

Half-a-dozen movies hitting screen for Deepavali

Cop transferred for misbehaving with woman SI

Coimbatore: An Assistant Commissioner of Police here was transferred after a video footage purportedly showing him inappropriately touching a woman sub-inspector went viral on social media.

An order was received by city police to ‘re-direct’ the ACP, Law and Order (Central), to the Director General of Police Office Vacancy Reserve, for facilitating a proper and fair enquiry, an official release said last night.

The alleged incident occurred during the course of an arrest process (during a protest by students) on 4 September evening and it went viral on social media, it said. Also, a charge memo under the relevant rules had been initiated for serious delinquency against the ACP, was instructed to report at the DGP office by this morning, the release added.

In the video, the ACP was purportedly seen inappropriately touching the woman SI under the pretext of controlling the students protesting against the National Entrance-cum-Eligibility Test.

Earlier yesterday, a delegation of All India Democratic Women Association (AIDWA) here submitted a memorandum to City Police Commissioner, Dr A Amalraj, urging him to take stringent action against the official for ‘misbehaving’ with his colleague in full public view.

Indian woman jailed for reckless driving, killing baby in Australia

A 32-year-old Indian woman in Australia has been sentenced to over two years in jail after a court found her guilty of "wanton disregard of the law" which led to a car crash with a pregnant woman whose baby died.

Dimple Grace Thomas, a former nurse and personal carer, will have to serve 15 months before she is eligible for parole and also faces deportation to India after her release, Herald Sun reported.

The court heard that Thomas should have turned left onto South Gippsland Highway when leaving a car park after a gym workout, but instead drove across three lanes in an attempt to enter a gap in the central median strip and turn right,the report said.

She collided with the driven by a 28 weeks pregnant woman Ashlea Allen on the highway at about 60kmh last August.

Allen suffered severe abdominal pain and underwent an emergency caesarean in hospital but her daughter, Melarniah, died two days later.

Thomas's lawyer described her as an inexperienced and nervous driver and told the court she was confused about the intersection and had thought a car at the median strip was making space for her to turn right.

The Judge James Parrish found the design of the intersection was "unambiguous" and made it clear that cars leaving the car park had to turn left.

The court heard that Thomas had been at the intersection many times previously and had always obeyed the law and turned left but last year's attempt would have meant a quicker trip home.

"I'm satisfied beyond reasonable doubt you were acting in wanton disregard to the law," he said, adding "The consequences of your driving have caused the death of a young baby girl. Such offending is serious."

Thomas wrote letters to Allen but prosecutors submitted they were sent in an attempt to minimise her culpability rather than a sign of remorse.

Parrish accepted there were signs of remorse, and that her physical and mental wellbeing had deteriorated since the crash. —PTI

Black money worth Rs 4,900 crore was disclosed by 21,000 people under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojna (PMGKY), the stash money declaration window announced by the government post demonetisation, an official said on Thursday.

The Income Tax Department, a top government official told PTI, has collected a tax of Rs 2,451 crore till now from these declarations.

"21,000 people disclosed Rs 4,900 crore of black money under the PMGKY scheme that closed on March 31 this year. These are now the final figures," the official said, adding that the I-T department is now following up the legal processes with the declarants in few cases.

The scheme was launched in December last year by the government to enable people with black money to come clean by paying tax and penalty of 50 per cent. It closed on March 31 this year.

The scheme was announced after Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the demonetisation of two high-value currency notes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 on November 8 last year.

Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia, after the closure of the PMGKY window, had said that the response to the scheme has "not been so good."

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had said that the PMGKY was preceded by similar schemes and hence the response to it by the public should not be seen in isolation.

"Keep in mind that PMGKY in that financial year was not an isolated scheme. You first had the IDS, then you had people depositing cash in banking system knowing it would incur a tax liability and PMGKY was over and above that.

"When you look at the total amount of disclosures made, you have to look at all three of them collectively," the minister had said.

The government had also termed the PMGKY as the one last window for black money holders to come clean by paying tax and penalty on their undisclosed illicit wealth.

The scheme provided for payment of 49.9 per cent tax, surcharge and penalty.

Also, a mandatory deposit of 25 per cent of the black money was to be made in a zero-interest bearing account for four years.

The PMGKY was preceded by the Income Declaration Scheme (IDS), between June 1, 2016-September 30, 2016, where 71,726 declarations disclosing undisclosed income of Rs 67,382 crore were made by black money holders.

The government has collected over Rs 12,700 crore tax under the IDS till now.

Questioning if parents could not keep a check on whether their children were playing the Blue Whale game, which has led to several suspected suicides across the country, the Bombay High Court Thursday asked how the government could be expected to do so. The court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation filed by an NGO, Citizen Circle for Social Welfare and Education, seeking directions to the state government and the state police to stop online availability and circulation of the “lethal online game the Blue Whale”.

The court asked if the Union of India had issued any direction in the matter and was informed that it had asked social media platforms and search engines to immediately remove links of the game. The matter has been kept for hearing next week.

The petition also seeks directions for scrutiny of all online games available in India by the Cyber Cell, Maharashtra, to verify if they are lethal and take time-bound action to stop the availability of games that are found to be life threatening.

It has also sought for a commission to be set up for assisting the court in the matter besides setting up a 24×7 helpline.

A court on Thursday sentenced two men to death and two more, including gangster Abu Salem, to life in jail for the 1993 Mumbai serial bombings that killed 257 people.

A fifth convict, Riyaz Siddiqui, was given 10 years in prison.

The verdict came 24 years after the dozen blasts in India’s financial capital and nearly 80 days after they were found guilty by the Special Tada Court.

The 50-year-old Salem was spared the gallows because of an extradition treaty with Portugal, where he was hiding before being brought to India.

Salem and his former actress-girlfriend Monica Bedi were arrested by Interpol in Lisbon in 2002 and were handed to Indian agencies in November 2005.

An important clause in the Indo-Portuguese treaty for the fugitive gangster’s extradition was an assurance by New Delhi that he would not be sentenced to death.

“The extradition treaty says the maximum sentence permissible to him is 25 years, since life imprisonment and death penalty are banned in Portugal,” special public prosecutor Deepak Salve said.

“The government will take a decision … whether to commute the life sentence to 25 years.”

Co-convicts Firoz Khan and Tahir Merchant were free from such constraints. Special TADA court Judge GA Sanap sentenced them to death for the dozen explosions that wounded 713 people and destroyed property worth ₹27 crore.

Karimullah Khan, a close aide of India’s most wanted man Dawood Ibrahim, was awarded life imprisonment.

Dawood had ordered the attacks to avenge the demolition of the Babri mosque in Ayodhya by a Hindu mob a year before, which triggered large-scale religious riots.

The court in June convicted six people, including fellow mastermind Mustafa Dossa and Salem.

Dossa died of a heart attack in Mumbai’s JJ Hospital a few days after his conviction.

The men were arrested between 2003 and 2010. Another suspect, Abdul Qayoom Karim Shaikh, was acquitted for lack of evidence.

The accused gathered to “take revenge against the government of India and against members of the Hindu community” after the riots in 1992, the court said.

The court said Salem was one of the conspirators and was close to Anees Ibrahim Kaskar, Dawood’s brother, and Dossa. He brought arms and ammunition to Mumbai.

The attacks also embroiled Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt, who served time for buying weapons from gangsters accused of orchestrating the bombings before walking free last year.

Salem had delivered three AK-56 rifles, ammunition and hand grenades to the actor.

On a quiet afternoon of March 12, 1993, the coastal megapolis was shattered by a 12 coordinated blasts in quick succession. The prime targets included the Air India building, Bombay Stock Exchange, Zaveri Bazar, and five-star hotels SeaRock and Juhu Centaur.

Legal proceedings against those accused of being involved in the bombings resulted in more than 100 convictions, most of which are still winding their way through the legal system because of appeals and commutations of sentences.

One suspect in the case, Yakub Memon, was hanged in 2015.

The court held that Merchant was among the conspirators. He worked with Tiger Memon, another fugitive conspirator, participated in several meetings in Dubai.

“The role of Tahir in the conspiracy is prominent. He is one of the initiators of the conspiracy,” the court said in its ruling on June 16.

Fill up 2,500 asst civil surgeon posts: HC

Madurai: The Madurai bench of Madras high court on Wednesday lifted its earlier stay on the Medical Services Recruitment Board's move to fill 2,500 vacancies of assistant civil surgeons in the state and directed it to make the appointments.

Justice T Raja who had granted the stay on a petition filed by A Sagaya Panimalar from Virudunagar said "Stay is vacated and accordingly the respondents are directed to make appointments from the reserve list of qualified candidates, more particularly to meet the urgent need of doctors to face the spread of dengue."

The petitioner had said that the MSRB without following procedure of issuing advertisement and conducting examination commenced the recruitment drive to fill up 2,500 posts of assistant civil surgeon. It had started certificate verification based on the notification issued on November 10, 2016 to fill up 1,223 vacancies including 144 backlog vacancies for the physically challenged people. The MSRB was not supposed to hold recruitment drive, the petitioner said.

She said she was unable to apply for the post on the earlier occasion since, as per the condition given in the 2016 November notification of MSRB, a candidate had to get his/her name registered with the Tamil Nadu Medical Council before the issuance of the notification. Following this, the petitioner was eagerly waiting for fresh notification for filling assistant civil surgeon post. Like her, there were many people to apply for the post of assistant civil surgeon. Hence, she prayed to restrain MSRB from taking further steps to fill the vacancies and direct it to make recruitment following due procedure.

Students, parents say wait for medical admission was more stressful than NEET

Trichy: Waiting to get admission in a medical college was more stressful than preparing for NEET and awaiting results - this was what the new MBBS students in Trichy said on their first day in college.

All the 150 students who secured MBBS seats at KAP Viswanathan government medical college in Trichy were felicitated along with their parents as part of the fresher's day observed on Monday. This year was significant for the uncertainly that prevailed in medical admission over NEET. A deep sigh of relief was evident on many of the faces - both parents and students - seated in the seminar hall.

E Sarasu, a school teacher from Melmaruvathur was elated for being able to get her daughter admitted at the college. This will be her third child pursuing MBBS, one of her sons is a practising doctor in the USA while another son is a faculty at KAPV government college.

Though her daughter V Arivazhagi had all the resources to make it to the elite group of students securing medical seat, she said that the stress she had undergone was unmatched because of NEET. Arivazhagi had secured 296 out of 720 in NEET after scoring 1,172 in Plus-Two.

Many of those who got the seat were keen on getting it and left no stone unturned. R Shanmugam who came along with her daughter said that apart from admitting her daughter to the state board, he also got her daughter prepared for NEET.

"It had kept her under pressure over additional burden of learning the subjects, but that has paid off now. The struggle all through the admission has made the achievement even more special for her," he said.

D Venkatesh, a proud father of another medical student, said that he had options of having his son in Villupuram but KAPV medical college has more senior faculty members.

Though the students have won the race by getting into the medical college, the real race has just begun, said faculty members. "During my college days, we had 18 months to learn subjects like anatomy, physiology and biochemistry in the first year, but the students who have joined now have just nine months left because of delay in admissions," said deputy director of medical education Dr R Geetha.

KAPV Medical college Dean G Anitha asked the students to give back to the society after completing the course as they were going to study in the subsidised seats from the money of the tax payer.

Railway gives part refund to 50 who missed connecting train

Trichy: Fifty passengers bound for Manamadurai on the Trichy-Manamadurai DEMU, who were arriving at the station by the Mannargudi-Trichy passenger train, had a harrowing experience on Wednesday as the delay by railway caused them to miss the train to Manamadurai. Furthermore, they were only issued a partial refund.

The irked passengers were issued the partial refund after the passengers created an issue with the station manager for a while.

According to the railway authorities, 50 passengers arriving on Train No 76805 Mannargudi-Trichy train had reserved tickets on Train No 76807 Trichy-Manamadurai train which departs from Trichy at 9.55am. However, the Mannargudi train reached Trichy only at 10.30am, against it scheduled time 9.10am.

When the passengers reached Trichy railway junction, they were annoyed at knowing that Train No 76807 Trichy-Manamadurai train had already left.

Irked by the delay and missing their train, the passengers took up the issue with the station manager. The railway authorities pacified the irked passengers by refunding a partial fare of the ticket. Following this they dispersed from the station manager's room. The incident created commotion at the station for some time, sources said.

MBBS admissions draw to a close, finally

Chennai: After eight months of battle against NEET-based admission for MBBS courses, all medical colleges in Tamil Nadu formally closed admissions on Thursday with last minute rush to pay fees in deemed universities across the state.

While admission to government and self-financing medical colleges ended on September 4, admissions to Deemed universities ended on Thursday with almost all seats taken.

Last month nearly 80% of the seats in eight deemed universities of the state, that charge up to Rs 23 lakh per year, were vacant after two rounds of online counselling and a mop-up round by the Directorate General of Health Services. The Supreme Court then permitted the universities to fill in the seats using NEET-based rank list drawn up by the central agency.

Parents of students from state including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat rushed to apply to private universities in the state. Some students from within the state who were not allotted seats through the single window counselling conducted by the state government were also given seats. "We have completed admissions and we are opening college on Friday with a white coat ceremony. Students will be welcomed by the faculty members with a white coat," said Saveetha Medical College dean Dr T Gunasagaran.

While the SRM Medical College will open on Monday, the new batch of students who joined Sri Ramachandra University will start college, which opened on August 21, from Friday.

ராணுவ தளவாட உற்பத்தித் துறை சார்பில் தில்லியில் நடைபெற்ற கண்காட்சியில் மத்திய உள்துறை அமைச்சர் ராஜ்நாத் சிங்குடன் பாதுகாப்புத் துறை அமைச்சர் நிர்மலா சீதாராமன்.

சவால்களை எதிர்கொள்ளும் வகையில் ராணுவம் நவீனமயமாக்கப்படும் என்றும் முப்படையினரின் நலனுக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் அளிக்கப்படும் என்றும் பாதுகாப்புத் துறை அமைச்சராக வியாழக்கிழமை பொறுப்பேற்றுக் கொண்ட நிர்மலா சீதாராமன் (55) உறுதிபடத் தெரிவித்தார்.
பாதுகாப்புத் துறையில் உள்ள பிரச்னைகளுக்குத் தீர்வு காண உரிய நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்போவதாகவும் அவர் கூறினார்.
நாட்டின் புதிய பாதுகாப்புத் துறை அமைச்சராகப் பதவியேற்ற நிர்மலா சீதாராமன், தில்லியில் உள்ள அவரது அலுவலகத்துக்கு வியாழக்கிழமை வந்தார். அங்கு அவரை சக அமைச்சர்களும், உயரதிகாரிகளும் வரவேற்றனர். அப்போது சிறப்புப் பூஜைகளையும் புரோகிதர்கள் நடத்தினர். அதன் பின்னர் பொறுப்புகளை ஏற்றுக் கொண்டு பாதுகாப்புத் துறை அமைச்சராக நிர்மலா சீதாராமன் செயலாற்றத் தொடங்கினார்.
இதன் மூலம் இந்திரா காந்திக்குப் பிறகு அப்பொறுப்பை வகிக்கும் இரண்டாவது பெண்மணி என்ற பெருமையை அவர் பெறுகிறார்.
முன்னதாக, கடந்த ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை மத்திய அமைச்சரவை விரிவாக்கம் செய்யப்பட்டது. இணையமைச்சர் (தனிப்பொறுப்பு) பதவி வகித்து வந்த நிர்மலா சீதாராமனுக்கு கேபினட் அந்தஸ்து வழங்கப்பட்டது. அதுவும், முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்த பாதுகாப்புத் துறை இலாகா அவருக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்டது.
சவால் மிகுந்த பாதுகாப்புத் துறை அமைச்சகமானது சுதந்திர இந்தியாவில் பெரும்பாலும் ஆண்களின் வசமே இருந்து வந்தது. நாட்டின் இரும்புப் பெண் என அழைக்கப்பட்ட மறைந்த பிரதமர் இந்திரா காந்தி மட்டுமே அந்த வரலாற்றை மாற்றி தன்னிடம் அந்தத் துறையை வைத்துக் கொண்டார்.
அவரது மறைவுக்குப் பிறகு 33 ஆண்டுகளாக அப்பதவியை ஆண் அமைச்சர்களே வகித்து வந்தனர். இந்நிலையில்தான் நிர்மலா சீதாராமனுக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்த அந்தப் பதவியை மத்திய பாஜக அரசு வழங்கியது. இந்திராவைப் பொருத்தவரை வேறு சில துறைகளுடன் சேர்த்து கூடுதல் பொறுப்பாகவே பாதுகாப்புத் துறையை கவனித்து வந்தார். ஆனால், நிர்மலா சீதாராமனுக்கு வேறு எந்தத் துறைகளும் வழங்கப்படாமல் பாதுகாப்புத் துறைப் பொறுப்பு மட்டும் பிரத்யேகமாக அளிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
நிர்மலா சீதாராமன் பொறுப்பேற்கும்போது மத்திய நிதியமைச்சர் அருண் ஜேட்லி உடனிருந்தார். அப்போது தாம் கூடுதலாக வகித்து வந்த பாதுகாப்புத் துறை பொறுப்புகளை நிர்மலா சீதாராமனிடம் அவர் ஒப்படைத்தார்.
இதைத்தொடர்ந்து செய்தியாளர்களிடம் நிர்மலா சீதாராமன் கூறியதாவது:
பாதுகாப்புப் படைகளை எப்போதும் தயார் நிலையில் வைத்திருப்பதற்கு முன்னுரிமை அளிக்கப் போகிறேன். அவர்களுக்குத் தேவையான ஆயுதங்கள், தளவாடங்கள் மற்றும் வசதிகளை அளிப்பதற்கு கூடுதல் முக்கியத்துவம் அளிக்கப்படும். பாதுகாப்புத் துறையினரின் நீண்ட கால பிரச்னைகள் அனைத்துக்கும் தீர்வு காண நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்படும். இதற்காக பிரதமர் மற்றும் மத்திய அமைச்சரவையுடன் கலந்தாலோசித்து முடிவெடுக்கவும் திட்டமிட்டுள்ளேன். ராணுவத் தளவாடங்கள் அனைத்தையும் 'இந்தியாவில் தயாரிப்போம்' திட்டத்தின் கீழ் உற்பத்தி செய்ய நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்படும் என்றார் அவர்.
ரூ.13 கோடி ஒதுக்கீடு: பாதுகாப்புத் துறை அமைச்சராகப் பொறுப்பேற்ற நிர்மலா சீதாராமன், முதல் பணியாக ஓய்வுபெற்ற ராணுவத்தினர் மற்றும் அவரது குடும்பத்தினரின் நலனுக்காக ரூ.13 கோடி நிதி ஒதுக்குவதற்கான கோப்பில் கையெழுத்திட்டார். இதன் மூலம் 8,685 ராணுவத்தினர் மற்றும் அவர்தம் குடும்பத்தினர் பயனடைவர் எனத் தெரிகிறது.
இதுதொடர்பாக கருத்து தெரிவித்த நிர்மலா சீதாராமன், 'கடுமையான போராட்டச் சூழலிலும், சவால் நிறைந்த எல்லைப் பகுதிகளிலும் நாட்டைக் காப்பதற்காக அயராது பாடுபடும் ராணுவத்தினரின் நலன்களைக் காப்பதை உறுதி செய்ய வேண்டும்' என்றார்.

போலீசார் கெஞ்சல் : விழுப்புரம் மாவட்டம், ஒலக்கூர் அருகே வைரபுரம் ஊராட்சி ஒன்றிய நடுநிலைப் பள்ளியின், இடைநிலை ஆசிரியை, சபரிமாலா, 34. இவர், நேற்று முன்தினம் காலை, 9:30 மணிக்கு, தான் பணியாற்றும் பள்ளி எதிரில், அதே பள்ளியில் இரண்டாம் வகுப்பு பயிலும், தன் மகனோடு, தர்ணா போராட்டம் நடத்தினார். 'நீட் தேர்வை ரத்து செய்ய வேண்டும்; இந்தியா முழுவதும் ஒரே மாதிரியான கல்வி முறையை அமல்படுத்த வேண்டும்' என வலியுறுத்தி தர்ணா செய்தார். தகவலறிந்து வந்த போலீசார் கெஞ்சியதால், சபரிமாலா தன் போராட்டத்தை கைவிட்டார். இந்நிலையில், நேற்று காலை, 11:00 மணிக்கு, விழுப்புரத்தில் உள்ள, மாவட்ட முதன்மைக் கல்வி அலுவலகத்தில், தொடக்கக் கல்வி அலுவலர் மதிவாணனைசந்தித்து, தன் வேலையை ராஜினாமா செய்வதாக, ஆசிரியை சபரி மாலா கடிதம் கொடுத்தார்.

கடிதத்தில், 'நான், 2002 முதல் ஆசிரியையாக, தமிழக கல்வித் துறையில் பணிபுரிந்து வருகிறேன். ஏற்றத்தாழ்வற்ற சமூகம் அமைய வேண்டும் என்பதற்காக, என் மகனை அரசு பள்ளியில் பயில வைக்கிறேன். 'நாடு முழுவதும் ஒரே கல்வித் திட்டம் இல்லாமல், ஒரே தேர்வு முறை என்பது எப்படி நியாயமாகும் என்ற நோக்கத்தில், போராட்டத்தை துவங்கினேன்.
'கல்வி பிரச்னைக்காக ஆசிரியர் குரல் எழுப்பி போராடக் கூடாது என கூறியதால், மன வேதனையில், என் பணியை ராஜினாமா செய்கிறேன்' என, தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

ராஜினாமா கடிதத்தை பெற்றுக்கொண்ட தொடக்க கல்வி அலுவலர், பள்ளிக்கல்வித் துறை இணை இயக்குனருக்கு கடிதத்தை அனுப்பி வைப்பதாகவும், அவர் உத்தரவையடுத்து, ராஜினாமா கடிதம் குறித்து முடிவு எடுக்கப்படும் என்றும் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

மன வேதனை : ராஜினாமா குறித்து ஆசிரியை சபரிமாலா நிருபர்களிடம் கூறியதாவது:

சிறந்த மாணவர்களை உருவாக்கும் நோக்கில்தான், ஆசிரியை பணியில் சேர்ந்தேன். என் பெற்றோரும் என்னை கஷ்டப்பட்டுதான் படிக்க வைத்தனர். அதிக மதிப்பெண் பெற்ற ஒரு மாணவி, மருத்துவம் படிக்க வாய்ப்பு கிடைக்காமல் இறந்துள்ளார். இதற்கு காரணமான, நீட் தேர்வை ரத்து செய்யக் கோரி, நான் துவக்கிய போராட்டத்திற்கு, அரசு பணி தடையாக இருப்பதால் மன வேதனையோடு ராஜினாமா செய்துள்ளேன்.இதற்கடுத்து, மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள கிராமங்களுக்கு சென்று, 'கலாம் போல் ஆகலாம்' மாணவர்கள் இயக்கம் அமைத்து, சமூகப் பணி செய்ய உள்ளேன். இவ்வாறு அவர் கூறினார். சேலம் மாவட்ட கலெக்டர் ரோகிணி, ஆத்தூர் அருகே மல்லியகரையில் சாலையோரங்களில் மரக்கன்றுகள் நடும் பணியை தொடங்கி வைப்பதற்காக நேற்று காலை வந்தார். பின்னர் தம்மம்பட்டிக்கு புறப்பட்டார். அங்கு செல்லும் வழியில் கருத்தராஜாபாளையம் ஊராட்சி தொடக்கப்பள்ளி வளாகத்தில் ஜாக்டோ - ஜியோ போராட்டம் நடந்ததால் ஆசிரியர்கள் பணிக்கு வரவில்லை. இதனால் மாணவ - மாணவிகள் வகுப்புகளுக்கு வெளியே நின்று கொண்டு இருந்தனர். இதைப் பார்த்த கலெக்டர் ரோகிணி அந்த பள்ளிக்கு சென்றார். வெளியே நின்று கொண்டிருந்த மாணவ - மாணவிகளை வகுப்புகளுக்கு அழைத்து சென்று உட்கார வைத்தார். பின்னர் 5-ம் வகுப்பு மாணவ-மாணவிகளுக்கு அவர் ஆங்கில பாடம் நடத்தினார். அப்போது மாணவ - மாணவிகளின் சந்தேகங்களுக்கு அவர் பதில் அளித்தார். சிறிது நேரம் அங்கிருந்து விட்டு கலெக்டர் ரோகிணி புறப்பட்டு சென்றார்.

தாம்பரம்,

காஞ்சீபுரம் மாவட்டம் ஜமீன் பல்லாவரம், மாமல்லபுரம், பல்லாவரம், ஊரப்பாக்கம் உள்ளிட்ட 17 இடங்கள் புராதன பகுதிகள் என்பதால், அங்கு புதிய கட்டிடங்கள் கட்டவும், பழைய கட்டிடங்களை பழுது பார்க்கவும் தொல்லியல் துறையால் தடை செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது. தொல்லியல் துறையினர் தடையை நீக்கக்கோரி அப்பகுதி மக்கள் பல ஆண்டுகளாக பல்வேறு போராட்டங்கள் நடத்தினர்.

தடை செய்யப்பட்ட பகுதியில் நிலஅளவீடு செய்து எல்லையை வகுக்க வேண்டும் என்ற கோரிக்கையும் எழுந்தது. தொல்லியல் துறையினர் நிலஅளவீடு செய்ய வரும்போது அவர்களை பொதுமக்கள் தடுத்ததால், அளவீடு செய்யும் பணி நிறுத்தப்பட்டது.

இதுதொடர்பாக சென்னை ஐகோர்ட்டில் நடந்த வழக்கு விசாரணையில், ஐகோர்ட்டு நீதிபதி கிருபாகரன் 3 நாட்களில் தொல்லியல் துறை, வருவாய்த்துறை அதிகாரிகள் இணைந்து கூட்டு ஆய்வு மேற்கொண்டு அளவீடு பணியை செய்யவேண்டும் என உத்தரவிட்டார்.

இதையடுத்து நேற்று பலத்த போலீஸ் பாதுகாப்புடன் தாம்பரம் ஆர்.டி.ஓ. எஸ்.சந்திரசேகரன் தலைமையில் வருவாய்த்துறையினர், தொல்லியல்துறையினர், நகராட்சி ஊழியர்கள் பழைய பல்லாவரம் பகுதியில் நில அளவீடு செய்ய வந்தனர். இதற்கு எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவித்து, அந்த பகுதியை சேர்ந்த பொதுமக்கள் தங்கள் வீடுகள் மற்றும் கடைகளில் கருப்புக்கொடி ஏற்றி போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டனர். மேலும், அந்த பகுதிகளில் உள்ள அனைத்து கடைகளும் அடைக்கப்பட்டன.

இதையடுத்து போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்ட பொதுமக்களிடம் போலீசார் மற்றும் வருவாய்த்துறையினர் பேச்சுவார்த்தை நடத்தினர். 2 மணி நேர பேச்சுவார்த்தைக்கு பிறகும் உடன்பாடு ஏற்படாததால், அவர்களை போலீசார் கைது செய்து அங்குள்ள திருமண மண்டபத்தில் தங்கவைத்தனர்.
பின்னர் பலத்த போலீஸ் பாதுகாப்புடன் நில அளவீடு செய்யும் பணி நடைபெற்றது. இந்த பணி இன்றும் (வியாழக்கிழமை), நாளையும் (வெள்ளிக்கிழமை) நடைபெறும் என்றும், ஆய்வு அறிக்கை 14-ந் தேதி கோர்ட்டில் தாக்கல் செய்யப்படும் என்றும் அதிகாரிகள் தெரிவித்தனர்.
