Ticket fare likely to be increased when operations begin on stretches from Chennai Central and AG-DMS to the airport

In just a few months, commuters can travel from the Chennai Central and AG-DMS (Gemini) to the airport much quicker when services of the Metro Rail services are launched from the two locations.

Commuters will be able to cover the distance of about 25 km from the Central station to the airport via Koyambedu and Alandur in 45 minutes, and the stretch from AG-DMS to the airport in 35 minutes respectively.

According to officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the fare is likely to be increased when operations begin on these two stretches. “A ride from the Central to the airport may cost Rs. 70 and from the airport to AG-DMS, Rs. 60. But we give 20% discounts to travel card holders.

Travel cards available

“There are also other monthly trip passes which are cheaper. These travel cards are available for any denomination and will always be valid,” an official said.

A train will run every 10 minutes on these two stretches during rush hour and once every 20 minutes during non-rush hours, sources said. The frequency is likely to increase when the number of people travelling goes up substantially.

“There will be a train linking the Central and Alandur every five minutes. But, we can increase the frequency to one every 2.5 minutes if a lot of people travel,” a source said. The linking of the city’s most important railway station and the airport is likely to be of benefit to thousands of commuters. Though there are four entry/exit points to the Central, the ones next to the Park station and the Madras Medical College will be opened initially, sources said.

At present, Metro Rail services are operational on three stretches — Koyambedu to Alandur, Little Mount to Chennai airport and Thirumangalam to Nehru Park. On an average, 22,000 to 25,000 people travel through these three stretches every day. During holidays, the number goes up to 30,000 to 33,000. As many as 13 trains run on these three stretches.

Fourteen more trains will be operational on the two new stretches when services begin.

Jammu and Kashmir government bars employees from airing political views on social media

JAMMU: Airing political views on personal social media accounts could now land Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) government employees in trouble.

The J&K government today barred its employees from using their social media accounts for any political activity by amending the conduct rules for them.

The government has added a sub-rule in the Jammu and Kashmir Government Employees Conduct rules which states that no government employee shall engage in any criminal, dishonest, immoral or notoriously disgraceful conduct on social media which may be prejudicial to the government.

"They shall also not use their personal social media accounts for any political activity or endorse the posts or tweets or blogs of any political figure," the rule states.

The employees shall also not use their accounts in a manner that could reasonably be construed to imply that the government endorses or sanctions their personal activities in any manner whatsoever, it said.

The order said that the employees shall also not post inflammatory, extraneous messages in an online community with the intent of provoking readers into an emotional response.

Gynaecologist summoned after death of woman, infant

Madurai: A gynaecologist employed at Srivilliputhur Government Hospital was on Tuesday summoned by the Madurai bench of the Madras high court for alleged negligence of duty that resulted in the death of a woman and her infant.

A petition was filed by M Raja of Virudhunagar in 2012, against the gynaecologist Meera. The petitioner’s counsel told the court that Raja married Marialilly Paulin in 2001. She gave birth to two boys, one of whom was differently-abled.

In 2011, she became pregnant again. On September 23, 2011, Raja admitted his wife in the hospital. On September 26, she had labour pain at 4pm. But there was no gynaecologist available at that time as Meera was allegedly attending to patients at her private clinic. The patient and the infant died after Paulin’s amniotic sac broke. TNN

Order for student suicide info has teachers upset

Chennai: A recent circular asking for information on student suicides due to teacher harassment over a period of three academic years has irked teachers in the state. While the circular was issued by the chief education officer in Karur, the same questions are also being raised in other districts like Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram, said teachers’ associations.

Teachers felt the topic of suicides has to be handled sensitively and shows teachers in poor light. Some also said the perspectives may differ in each case of suicide and placing the blame on teachers can be done very easily without understanding the repercussions. “A teacher’s entire reputation may be at stake if an accusation is taken for serious consideration,” said Aravind, a teacher of a state board school in the city.

State president of the Tamil Nadu Teachers Association, P K Ilamaran said it is wrong to send out such a circular. Such issues should be discussed at parent-teacher meetings or call for a separate discussion with teachers on handling such instances, he said. “Nowadays, teachers have become wary because children point fingers at them for even reprimanding them. When the department also sends out such circulars, it gives out a wrong message because teachers would feel that the department too is turning against them,” he said.

School education secretary Pradeep Yadav remarked the drafting of the circular was not done in the right manner given the sensitivity of the issue.

Teachers felt that moral and value education as a concept also is not being taught properly to children who don’t treat their peers or teachers with the respect and right attitude.

Incidentally, school education minister K A Sengottaiyan also announced that new areas of value education will be incorporated into the curriculum module.

State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) director Arivoli said that the Value Integrated Teaching and Learning (VITAL) module had been distributed to schools last September but now will involve new areas of focus which will especially be incorporated along with Social Science lessons and language texts.
