BMI isn’t an accurate tool to diagnose obesity: Study

New Delhi : Do you think you are not obese according to your Body Mass Index? You may be mistaken, as a global commission convened by The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, a reputed medical journal, has now argued that BMI provides inaccurate results in assessing obesity. Doctors should confirm whether a person is obese using at least one other body measurement — such as waist circumference or by directly measuring body fat, it has suggested.

BMI is a medical screening tool that measures ratio of a person’s height to her or his weight to estimate amount of body fat she or he has. Current definition says a person with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 and above can be considered obese. According to Lancet Commission’s report, released Tuesday, people with excess body fat do not always have a BMI above 30, meaning that their health risk can go unnoticed. Similarly, it says, individuals with high muscle mass (for example, athletes) tend to have high BMIs despite normal fat mass and diagnosing them as having obesity or adisease was inappropriate.

“Relying on BMI alone to diagnose obesity is problematic as some people tend to store excess fat at the waist or in and around their organs, such as the liver, heart or muscles, and this is associated with a higher health risk compared to when excess fat is stored just beneath the skin in the arms, legs or in other body areas. But people with excess body fat do not always have a BMI that in dicates they are living with obesity, meaning their health problems can go unnoticed. Additionally, some people have a high BMI and high body fat but maintain normal organ and body functions, with no signs or symptoms of ongoing illness.”

Robert Eckel, a professor at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, who was part of the expert group, said. Dr Anoop Misra, a doctor from India who was in the expert committee, added: “Abdominal obesity is common in India. Existing criteria based on BMI measurement often fails to classify them as obesity. The new classification will help remove this hurdle.” The Lancet Commission says not all persons having obesity need medical or surgical intervention. It has, for the first time, recommended subdividing obesity into two groups: clinical obesity and pre-clinical obesity, based on the presence or absence, respectively, of objective clinical manifestations (i.e., signs and symptoms) of altered organ function or impairment of an individual’s ability to conduct daily activities. Preclinical obesity often needs only monitoring and counseling, while clinical obesity may require treatment to prevent severe complications like heart attack, the Commission suggests.

HC: Man acquitted following compromise eligible for govt job

HC: Man acquitted following compromise eligible for govt job

Bhopal/Jabalpur : The MP high court has held that a person acquitted in a criminal case following compromise with the complainant is eligible for a govt job. The bench of Justice Vivek Jain with this observation ordered for appointment of a petitioner as a police constable. Ratnesh Kumar Singh from Kotma Anuppur in his petition said he had applied for the post of police constable (driver) in the exam conducted by MP Professional Examination Board in 2012. Meanwhile, a case under section 325 of the IPC was registered against him at police station Bhalumada in Anuppur district. Following compromise with the complainant, he was acquitted by the court. Despite qualifying in the written exam and trade test, he was not given appointment in the police. He had moved the high court against the decision not to give him the job and the court disposed of his petition with a directive to officials concerned to consider his application. After his application was rejected, he filed a petition again. The court again asked the officials to consider his application in the light of the supreme court order. His application was rejected again. After his third application was rejected, he moved the court again.

The court in its order said that officials rejecting application of the petitioner seem to believe that the case against the petitioner was proved and he somehow managed to come to an agreement with the complainant for a compromise. In this case, it was a quarrel between neighbours and the petitioner was not the prime accused. The officials rejecting his application never mentioned the injuries sustained by the complainant which could justify trial of the petitioner under section 325 of the IPC. In such a situation, the case against the petitioner seems to be petty and fake and making an opinion about his character on its basis won't be justified.

Meta-owned messaging app WhatsApp has rolled out several new features and design improvements aimed at making chats more engaging and creative for users, said the company.

The updates, which come at the start of the new year, include various tools designed to enhance the visual appeal of messages, provide more personalised options, and streamline user interactions.

Here are details on the new features:

Camera effects

Among the most notable additions is the introduction of camera effects. WhatsApp users can now access a selection of 30 backgrounds, filters, and effects when taking and sharing photos or videos in their chats. These options, previously available only during video calls, are now integrated into regular photo and video messages, offering more ways to personalise content before sending it.

Selfie stickers

The app has also added a new feature for those who enjoy creating custom stickers. Users can now turn selfies into stickers, making the process even easier. By selecting the 'create sticker' option, users can take a selfie, which is then instantly converted into a personalised sticker to share with friends. This feature is available on Android devices, with an iOS version set to follow in the near future.

Share sticker packs

WhatsApp has also made it easier to share sticker packs with others. If users spot a sticker pack that they think their friend will enjoy, they can now share it directly within their chats, eliminating the need to search for the same pack separately.

Quicker reactions

The instant messaging platform has introduced quicker reactions. Users can now double-tap a message to quickly react, with the app displaying a list of their most-used reactions for fast access.

In other news, WhatsApp is reportedly introducing a reverse image search feature to combat misinformation online. Initially spotted on the Android beta, it is now available on WhatsApp Web Beta.

Reportedly, users can authenticate images shared with them by using Google’s reverse image search, helping identify if an image is edited, manipulated, or misused. The feature is convenient as users don't need to download images; a shortcut will be added to WhatsApp Web for easy access to the reverse image search process.

Airtel leads in call quality, Jio in download speeds in Delhi: TRAI

TRAI's Independent Drive Tests (IDT) were conducted in New Delhi (Delhi LSA), Jaipur (Rajasthan LSA), Ahmednagar (Maharashtra LSA), and Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh LSA)—during September-October 2024.

Both Airtel and Vodafone Idea have a call setup success rate of 99.25%, according to TRAI's city-wise tests.

Reliance Jio (RJIL), India’s leading telecom service provider, reported the lowest call quality and a higher percentage of unsuccessful call attempts in Delhi compared to its competitors, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea.

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), which released a report on Friday based on an its Independent Drive Tests (IDT) conducted in four cities, Reliance Jio has a lower call setup success rate of 94.00%, indicating that a higher percentage of call attempts fail.

In comparison, both Airtel and Vodafone Idea have a call setup success rate of 99.25%, reflecting their highly reliable call connection processes.

When it comes to call drops, which refer to calls that are disconnected before completion, Reliance Jio performed poorly along with Vodafone Idea. On the other hand, Bharti Airtel, India’s second-largest telecom provider, outperformed the others in this regard. While Airtel reported an exceptionally low call drop rate of 0.12%, both RJIL and VIL had a slightly higher rate of 0.23%, still indicating relatively low call drop rates overall.

Reliance Jio also struggled with call silence or call mute issues, where a call is successfully connected but no audio is heard. According to TRAI, Jio had the highest mute rate at 3.01%, indicating that a significant percentage of its calls experience silence after being established.

In comparison, Airtel reported the lowest mute rate at just 0.55%, highlighting its superior call audio performance. Vodafone Idea (VIL) had a mute rate of 2.34%, meaning while it faced fewer issues than Jio, it still encountered notable audio problems during calls.

TRAI's Independent Drive Tests (IDT) were conducted in New Delhi (Delhi LSA), Jaipur (Rajasthan LSA), Ahmednagar (Maharashtra LSA), and Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh LSA)—during September-October 2024. The tests assessed the performance of voice and data services across the networks of all telecom service providers operating in these regions.

In terms of call establishment time, which measures how long it takes to connect a call after initiation, Reliance Jio excelled among the private telecom operators in Delhi. Jio takes just 0.73 seconds to establish a call, while Airtel and Vodafone Idea take 0.82 seconds and 1.55 seconds, respectively. This highlights Jio's faster call connection speed compared to its competitors.

In terms of data download performance, Reliance Jio leads, followed by Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea in Delhi. However, when it comes to data upload speeds, Airtel is considered the fastest among the three, with Reliance Jio coming in second, followed by Vodafone Idea.
