Bengaluru : V Narayanan, the architect of India’s cryogenic engine technology during international sanctions, assumed office as Department of Space secretary and ISRO chairman on Monday. Narayanan’s leadership credentials were firmly established through his instrumental role in India’s historic Chandrayaan missions. As National Level Expert Committee chief, he precisely identified the causes behind Chandrayaan-2’s hard landing and recommended crucial improvements, which ultimately led to the historic success of Chandrayaan-3, making India the first nation to achieve a soft landing near the Moon’s south pole. As the lead engineer, he spearheaded the develop ment of L110 Liquid Stage and C25 Cryogenic Stage for LVM3 vehicle, both of which were crucial for Chandrayaan missions. Besides his contributions to lunar missions, Narayanan’s technical acumen was evident in the successful Aditya-L1 mission, where he led teams in developing critical stages of PSLV-C57 launch vehicle and the sophisticated propulsion system that guided India’s first solar observatory to Sun-Earth L1 point. He has also contributed to the human spaceflight program, Gaganyaan, and is overseeing the development of next-generation propulsion technologies. His expertise will be crucial for upcoming missions, including Venus Orbiter, Chandrayaan-4, and the recently approved Bharatiya Antariksha Station.
