ஜெயலலிதா முதலமைச்சராக இருந்த போது அளவுக்கு மீறி சொத்துகுவித்ததாக அவர் மீது சொத்துகுவிப்பு வழக்கு தொடரப்பட்டது. மேலும் சசிகலா, இளவரசி, சுதாகரன், ஆகியோர் மீதும் வழக்கு தொடரப்பட்டது.

இதில் முதல் குற்றவாளியாக ஜெயலலிதா சேர்க்கப்பட்டிருந்தார். இதுகுறித்த வழக்கில் ஜெயலலிதா உள்ளிட்ட 4 பேருக்கும் 4 ஆண்டு சிறை தண்டனை விதித்து கர்நாடக உயர்நீதிமன்றம் உத்தரவிட்டது.

இதை எதிர்த்து ஜெயலலிதா தரப்பில் மேல்முறையீடு செய்யவே 4 பேரும் தண்டனையில் இருந்து தப்பித்தனர்.
அனைவரையும் நீதிமன்றம் விடுத்தலை செய்வதாக அறிவித்தது. ஆனால் கர்நாடக அரசு விடவில்லை. மேலும் மேல் முறையீடு செய்தது. இந்த மேல் முறையீட்டு மனுவில் ஜெயலலிதா உயிரோடு இருக்கும் காலம் வரை தீர்ப்பு வரவில்லை.

கடந்த ஆண்டு பிப்ரவரி மாதம் ஜெயலலிதா காலமானார். இதையடுத்து சொத்துகுவிப்பு வழக்கு மீண்டும் விஸ்வரூபம் எடுக்க ஆரம்பித்தது. தீர்ப்பு வருவதற்குள் எப்படியாது முதலமைச்சராக பொறுப்பேற்க வேண்டும் என அனைத்து சதி வேலைகளிலும் சசிகலா ஈடுபட ஆரம்பித்தார்.

ஜெ மறைவிற்கு பிறகு ஒரு மிகப்பெரிய நாடகத்தை மீடியாக்கள் முன்பு அரங்கேற்றினார். மக்கள் விரும்பவில்லை என்று தெரிந்தும் தற்போது இருக்கும் அதிமுக நிர்வாகிகள் ஒப்புதலோடு பொதுச்செயலாளராக பதவியேற்றார்.

பதவியேற்றதும் முதல் நாளே தன்னுடைய எளிமையான தோற்றத்தில் இருந்து ஜெயலலிதா போன்று நடை உடை பாவணை, அனைத்தையும் மாற்றி அவரின் அனைத்து உடமைகளையும் கைப்பற்றி அவருக்கு உரிமையாக்கி கொண்டார்.

இதைதொடர்ந்து, சொத்துகுவிப்பு வழக்கு தீர்ப்பு சசிகலாவின் கண்ணிற்கு தெரிய, முதலமைச்சராக இருந்த பன்னீரை கட்டாயப்படுத்தி ராஜினாமா செய்ய வைத்தார்.

ஆனால் ஜெயலலிதாவிற்கு மட்டுமே அடிமையாக இருந்த பன்னீர் முதன் முதலில் அனைவருக்கும் முன்னுதாரனமாய் சசிகலாவை எதிர்த்து போர்க்கொடி தூக்கினார்.

இதையடுத்து பன்னீரை பாஜக அரசுதான் இயக்குகிறது என்று அனைவருக்கும் சந்தேகம் எழுந்தது. இது தெரிந்தும், பாஜகவை பகைத்து கொள்ளக்கூடாது என முடிவெடுத்த சசிகலா பன்னீரை திமுகவே இயக்குகிறது என பேட்டியளித்தார்.

ஆனாலும் மத்திய அரசு சசிகலாவுக்கு சப்போர்ட் செய்யவில்லை. வந்தது சொத்துகுவிப்பு வழக்கு தீர்ப்பு. அளித்தது சசிகலாவுக்கு 4 ஆண்டு சிறை தண்டனை. மேலும் சுதாகரனுக்கும், இளவரசிக்கும் தான். ஆனால் ஜெயலலிதா இறந்துவிட்டதால் அவரை இந்த வழக்கில் இருந்து விடுவித்தது.

இதைதொடர்ந்து பெங்களூர் சிறைக்கு சென்ற சசிகலா அடுத்தடுத்து சீராய்வு மனு போட்டு அட்டெம்ப்ட் அடித்தார். அதற்கு உச்சநீதிமன்றம் விடவில்லை. திரும்ப திரும்ப சசிகலா மனுவில் ஃபெயில் போட்டுகொண்டே இருந்தது நீதிமன்றம்.

இந்நிலையில், கடைசியாக எப்படியாவது முட்டி மோதி பார்த்திட வேண்டும் என சசிகலா முடிவெடுத்தார். 3 பேரும் உச்சநீதிமன்றத்தில் சீராய்வு மனுவை தாக்கல் செய்தனர்.

அந்த மனுவில் ஜெயலலிதாவை விலக்கியது போல் எங்களையும் விடுதலை செய்ய வேண்டும் என கோரியிருந்தனர். ஆனால் அதற்கும் முழுக்கு போட்டது உச்சநீதிமன்றம். மூன்று பேரின் சீராய்வு மனுவையும் தள்ளுபடி செய்து உத்தரவிட்டது.

இதனால் சிறையில் இருந்து வெளியே வந்து விட வேண்டும் என்ற சசிகலாவின் கனவு பாலாய் போனது. மேலும் இனி அவர் சிறையிலேயே தண்டனை காலத்தை கழிக்க வேண்டிய கட்டயத்துக்கு தள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளார்.

இதனிடையே ஒபிஎஸ் தரப்பும் எடப்பாடி தரப்பும் ஒன்றாக இணைந்துள்ள நிலையில் சசிகலாவின் மறு சீராய்வு குறித்த மனுவில் நல்ல தீர்ப்பு கிடைக்கும் என தினகரன் திவாகரன் தரப்பு கோட்டை கட்டி கொண்டிருந்தது.

மேலும் கட்சி திரும்ப தமது கைக்குள் கொண்டுவந்துவிட வேண்டும் என திட்டமிட்டனர். ஆனால் உச்சநீதிமன்ற தீர்ப்பால் பலத்த ஆட்டம் கண்டுள்ளனர் மன்னார்குடி கும்பல்...

Banking activities paralysed in Salem, Namakkal

The regular banking activities were paralysed in the Salem and Namakkal districts, thanks to the all India strike by bank officers and employees on Tuesday to highlight charter of demands.

The strike was called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU).

The UFBU demanded the Centre and the Reserve Bank of India not to privatise the successfully functioning public sector banks and not to merge the existing banks, take effective steps for the collection of non-performing assets (NPA), not to pass the burden of NPA on the bank customers. The UFBU also opposed the Centre’s move to reduce the interest rate on the savings bank accounts.

The striking bank officers and employees, including women, staged a demonstration in front of the main branch of the State Bank of India in the city.

K. Swaminathan, president of the Salem district unit of the UFBU, led the agitation. The participants raised slogans in support of the demands.

S. Sampath (AIBEA), Balaji (AIBOC), Manikandan (NCBE), Deenadayalan (BEFI) and Nagarajan representing bank retirees spoke on the occasion highlighting the demands.

The UFBU members staged a demonstration in front of the Bank of Baroda branch in Namakkal.

The agitating bankmen said that the huge NPAs were harming the country’s economy. Instead of taking steps for the recovery of NPAs, the Centre and the RBI were involved in merging the PSU banks and privatising them. They also demanded posting of adequate staff in the bank branches.

K. Kannan, convener of the Namakkal district unit of the UFBU, led the agitation. Venkatasubramaniam (AIBEA), Kumarasamy (AIBOC), Hemas (NCBE), U. Perumal (BEFI), Umarani (AIBOA) spoke highlighting the demands.

Services hit in Erode

Transactions to the tune of Rs. 400 crore were affected as over 2,100 employees of 325 public sector bank (PSB) branches went on strike protesting against the Central Government’s proposed consolidation move, besides demanding fulfilment of their various demands here on Tuesday.

All the branches remain closed in the district affecting the services. Companies faced the heat as transactions like cheque clearance could not be carried out.

Employees of various PSBs under the banner United Forum of Bank Unions staged a demonstration outside the State Bank of India main branch near Veterinary Hospital in the city. Led by its district coordinator S. Ganesh, protesters said that banks needed Rs. 1.70 lakh crore equity where as the government had given only Rs. 70,000 crore in the past five years.

The government had directed all the PSBs to mobile Rs. 1 lakh crore from stock market, they added.

“It is nothing but, a move to privatise the nationlaised banks,” they added.

The members raised voice against the consolidation move of the government as it would affect employees and also the customers.

They said that non-performing assets (NPAs) of the banks had increased from Rs. 40,000 crore in 2008 to Rs. 8 lakh crore now and added that it would result in poor performance of the bank.

The protesters urged the Centre to drop the privatisation and consolidation move, strengthen the public sector banks, take stringent action against persons who wilfully refuse to repay the loans, stop write-off bad debts of large companies and not pass on the bad debts of the bank to its customers.

Special trains to clear extra rush

The Salem Railway Division will operate special trains from Coimbatore to Nagapattinam and from Panvel (Maharashtra) to Coimbatore to clear the extra rush of passengers.

The train No. 06094 Coimbatore – Nagapattinam special fare special train will be operated via Tirupur, Erode, Karur on September 7 (Thursday). The train will depart from Coimbatore junction at 7.30 p.m., Tirupur 8.17 p.m.; Erode 9.25 p.m.; Karur 10.30 p.m.; Tiruchi 12.30 a.m. the next day; Tiruchi 12.30 a.m.; Thanjavur 1.35 a.m.; Tiruvarur 3 a.m. and will reach Nagapattinam at 4 a.m.

Transaction loss put at Rs. 750 crore

The bankers’ dawn-to-dusk strike call in the city and suburban locations led to a transaction loss of approximately Rs. 750 crore as about 500 branches of over 50 public sector banks and 5000 employees had shut their offices on Tuesday.

Protesting against certain ‘major’ policies proposed by the Central government, which were ‘anti-people,’ the bankers came under a common umbrella — United Forum of Bank Unions — had called for a day-long nationwide strike to draw the attention of the policy makers to take them back.

When many corporate account holders’ Non-Performing Assets (NPA) were given a soft approach and kept in cold storage, common men (Aam Aadmi) were forced to maintain a minimum balance of Rs. 5000 in a Savings Bank account.

“Only a few months ago, State Bank of India (SBI) opened SB accounts with zero balance...Many branches were even given targets in this regard then. However, suddenly, the Union government had come up with the proposal to open SB accounts only when the account holder agreed for a minimum balance of Rs. 5000. Such ‘anti-people’ stand should be scrapped,” the agitators said.

Likewise, there were proposals to form a Board, which would be empowered to take decisions to merge banks or branches. Sometimes, the Board may even suggest closure of bank branches stating that they were not viable any more or propose to sell a bank to private sector.

When the Centre allowed waiver of penal interest, gave concessions and even relaxed conditions on terms of payment for high-end debtors and big corporate groups, why did they tax common man, asked K. Velayutham, a banker afflitated to Banking Employees Federation of India.

Many traders expressed concern over the strike as they were unable to deposit cheques and perform normal banking transaction. Only senior level officers and key managers were present. However, private sector banks functioned as usual.

Demands include scrapping of new pension scheme and implementing old one

Over 12,000 government employees, including teachers, went on strike affecting the functioning of government departments and schools across the district on Tuesday.

Under the banner, Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teachers Organisations and Government Employees Organisations (JACTTO-GEO), government employees staged protests in taluk offices in Erode, Perundurai, Modakurchi, Kodumudi, Gobichettipalayam, Bhavani, Anthiyur and Talavadi. Their demands include scrapping of new pension scheme and implementing old pension scheme, implementation of seventh pay commission and forming committee for eighth pay commission, providing 20% interim compensation until implementation of seventh pay commission recommendations and providing special increments for the employees.

While members of various teachers associations said that 90% of the primary and 70% of the high school and higher secondary teachers participated in the strike, government officials said that classes were conducted with the help of available teachers and temporary teachers.

Most of the employees did not turn up for work in government offices affecting the regular services to the public.

Hundreds of teachers and government servants staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate in the city and raised slogans in support of their demands. As more than 85 % of the teachers did not turn up for work, the functioning of schools was affected to a big extent. The temporary staff took classes in some schools.

The striking members of the JACTTO-GEO staged demonstrations in Attur, Vazhappadi, Mettur, Yercaud, Omalur, Theevattipatti, Yetthapur, Sankagiri, Edappadi and Gangavalli in the district.

The leaders said that they would launch indefinite strike from September 7 if their just demands were not conceded by then.

The members of the Tamil Nadu Government College Teachers Association staged a demonstration in front of the Government Arts College in support of the demands of the JACTTO-GEO.

The members of the Tamil Nadu Judiciary Employees Association too staged a demonstration in front of the district court to express their solidarity with the striking teachers and government servants.

Namakkal

Hundreds of members of the JACTTO-GEO participated in the demonstration held on Park road in the town and it was led by K. Rajendraprasad, its convener. S. Malarkanna, also convener, P. Ilangovan, district convener and leaders of various trade unions spoke on the occasion highlighting the demands.

The JACTTO-GEO members staged similar agitations in Tiruchengode, Rasipuram, Komarapalayam, Paramathivelur, Kolli hills, and Senthamangalam.

Petitioner wants to avoid clashes

A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the State government and the police to restrict the number of idols permitted to be installed in public places during Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations and reduce the number of days for which the idols could be kept on display.

When the matter came up before a Division Bench of Justices M. Sathyanaryanan and M. Sundar on Monday, they ordered notices to government officials and directed the High Court Registry to tag the case along with another PIL petition filed last week by activist ‘Traffic’ K.R. Ramaswamy with a plea to confine the celebrations to temples and marriage halls.

The latest petition filed by advocate M. Subash alleged too many organisations and individuals were allowed to install idols on roadsides and other public places and that most of them used plaster of Paris and other toxic chemicals to make the idols.

Judgment historic and a boon to women: Bader Sayeed

The Supreme Court’s verdict on Tuesday banning the practice of triple talaq has evoked mixed reactions from senior Muslim leaders and Islamic feminists in Tamil Nadu.

Disagreeing with the notion that the ban is an attempt to implement Uniform Civil Code, lawyer and former AIADMK MLA Bader Sayeed said, “It is an historic judgment and a great boon to Muslim women. It will prevent harassment of Muslim women in the name of triple talaq. Quite simply, this is about gender justice. What we are seeing now is that the men are getting nervous. This is about gender justice.”

The Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, welcomed the “bold judgement” saying that there is no triple talaq at one go in Islam. “The procedure for talaq is given in great detail in the noble Koran and it is also cumbersome. It cannot be played around with or taken very lightly either by the married couple or while issuing fatwa by the learned Ulema (learned Islamic scholars),” he said.

‘Rise above ideologies’

The Nawab called upon his Muslim brethren and learned Ulema of various schools of thought, in particular, to rise above their sectarian ideologies and whole-heartedly hail the verdict.

However, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi president M. H. Jawahirullah said the verdict was an attempt to impose a uniform civil code in India through the back door. In a statement, he said, “The Supreme Court’s verdict asking Parliament to enact a law within the next six months will pave way for more confusion. However, there is a chance that Centre could use the Law Commission to bring in Uniform Civil Code through the back door.”

Vijayawada-Singapore flight services likely

Fliers now go to Hyderabad or Chennai to reach Singapore

The Vijayawada Airport, which has recently joined the club of international airports, is most likely to have a direct flight service to Singapore.

According to sources, the State government is in talks with Singapore’s Scoot airlines which is operating from eight airports including Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai. The service would help many locals who now have to go to Hyderabad or Chennai to fly to Singapore.

The State government is making efforts to bring in international services to city as it would help develop an ecosystem for the IT industry in the capital region. The AP Civil Aviation Policy, 2015 also facilitates the Viability Gap Funding (VGF) of 20% of the project cost to the airline that operates in State in addition to the VGF by the Central government.

“The State government is of the view that an airline would start a service to Singapore and the airline is also mooting the proposal,” said a top official of the Central government.

However, the matter is still between the airline and the State government and the Airports Authority of India is yet to be approached, according to the official.

“We have no concrete information or communication from the airline so far. Also, we have not received any request for slots or any other permission yet,” said Vijayawada Airport director G. Madhushudhana Rao when contacted.

For record, similar efforts in this direction have already been initiated by the Emirates.

A few days ago, the Emirates airline had approached the Civil Aviation Ministry seeking bilateral traffic agreement to start a direct service from Vijayawada to Dubai.

Immigration awaited

Meanwhile, the establishment of an immigration desk at the old terminal which would serve as the international terminal is awaited. The desk needs the establishment of the National Informatics Centre’s server connection from either Eluru or Velagapudi.

Also, the terminal upgradation work, which is supposed to be completed by July 31, is going on.
