Students riled over hike, Marina on police radar

Chennai: Concerned that protests against the recent bus fare hike have gained momentum among students and youngsters across the state, the government on Tuesday decided to deploy a police contingent at Marina Beach.

The authorities have been uneasy about the sands off Kamarajar Promenade serving as a protest venue since the massive pro-jallikattu agitation last January threatened to spill over from the beach and turn into a serious law and order problem.

By early Tuesday morning, there were policemen guarding the beach’s entry and exit points to prevent protesters from gathering there and officers and constables kept a leery eye out at colleges nearby to intercept groups of students from heading toward Marina. Personnel stopped, questioned and checked clutches of students near the beach to prevent a possible congregation.

“We received intelligence inputs that a group of protesters planned to assemble on Marina Beach,” a police officer said. “We had to take precautionary measures.”

The weeklong pro-jallikattu protests last January ended with a clash between policemen and protesters, following which the city police imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in the vicinity till February 12. At the time, police officers said they were attempting to “preserve peace”. The state transport department, reacting to large numbers of college students reportedly joining in the protest against the increase in bus fares, on Tuesday stated the government does not intend to change the concessional rates for students on buses

Airfares go skyward ahead of Republic Day weekend

Chennai: Airfares to Mumbai, Delhi, Madurai, Singapore and Dubai shot up on Tuesday as demand peaked for short getaways over the Republic Day weekend.

One-way fares on most airlines were between ₹3,400 and ₹19,000 for morning flights on these routes, while return fares to Dubai and Singapore soared to ₹35,000 and more.

Fares were high for evening flights too. A one-way ticket to Delhi was ₹7,000 for Wednesday night; a flight on Thursday morning cost ₹19,000. Fares on the Chennai-Mumbai route ranged from ₹4,000 to ₹16,000. On the Madurai sector, it ranged between ₹5,000 and ₹14,000. Even low-cost carriers were charging ₹19,000 for evening and late-night flights.

FCM Travel Solutions India executive director Shravan Gupta said the Republic Day parade along Rajpath is always a big draw.

“We posted a steady rise in bookings at FCM for flights to New Delhi owing to the R-Day celebrations and the long weekend,” he said.

Other popular destinations on what is the first long weekend of the year were Goa, Kerala, Rajasthan and the Andamans. Singapore, Thailand, Bali, the Maldives Mauritius and Dubai.

“We have recorded an increase in bookings by approximately 43% to these destinations over last year,” Gupta said.

The travel industry reported an increased interest in Dubai among flyers due to the coming shopping festival in the Gulf emirate.

Yatra.com chief operating officer Sharat Dhall said more people than ever appear to be making travel plans, causing the airfare surge.

“The Republic Day weekend is a very popular time for people to take a short break,” he said. “This is a trend we have seen over the past few years. Also, with adventure tourism getting popular, there’s been an upswing in bookings for destinations like Rishikesh and Coorg.”
