Chennai to begin getting hotter soon

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Chennai: The city’s daytime (maximum) temperature, which has crossed the 30 degrees C mark, is set to rise by a degree or two in the next week, said weathermen. The maximum temperature on Sunday was same as normal, while the night (minimum) temperature was two degrees above normal. The Met office has forecast a partly cloudy sky on Monday.

The minimum temperature fell as low as 20.4 degrees C in the last week of January. On Sunday, the minimum temperature, recorded just before sunrise, was nearly 24 degrees C. The maximum temperature was 30.6 degrees C.

In the last decade, the hottest day in February was the 34.9 degrees C on February 27, 2009. The alltime highest was 36.7 degrees C (February 18, 1927).

Regional meteorological centre deputy director general S B Thampi said, “The days are set to get warmer by a degree or two in 5-10 days. The maximum temperature is not likely to go below 30 degrees C from here on.”

Clouding at night led the minimum temperature to rise above normal. Nungambakkam was nearly two degrees warmer than Meenambakkam. Weathermen attribute this to the proximity to the ocean. Areas near the coast, including Nungambakkam (4km from the coastline), experience sea breeze, which brings moisture and warms the air. Sea breeze reduces in intensity when it reaches Meenambakkam, around 8km away.

Palayamkottai recorded 34.3 degrees Celsius, the highest in TN, while Salem and Madurai recorded 34 degrees C.

The maximum and minimum temperature on Monday is likely to be 31degrees C and 24 degrees C.
