Driving without original licence
Two-wheeler riders top the list
Its two-wheelers riders who are topping the list again. After having the highest number for road accidents and traffic offences, they have topped the list of motorists who were fined for not carrying original driving licence. A week after police started the enforcement, two-wheeler riders accounted for more than 95 % motorists fined for the offence.
As on September 14, traffic police had fined 1,070 motorists who did not carry original driving licence.
Except 18 persons, all others fined for the offence were two-wheeler riders. While Traffic East police fined 235 two-wheeler riders, 835 were fined by Traffic West police. More than Rs. 5 lakh was collected as fine from all the offenders.
As per police statistics, two-wheeler riders are involved in more than 55 % of road traffic accidents. “While the rationale behind the new order was to reduce road accidents through cancellation of driving licence for six major traffic offences, two-wheeler riders are yet to fall in line,” says a traffic police officer.
Apart from imposing fine of Rs. 500 as fine, the police have decided to refer particulars of the driving licence of offenders for cancellation by Road Transport Authority.
Meanwhile, the enforcement part by police is entangled with various issues including low manpower. While there are at least 150 major roads in the city to be checked, strength of traffic police is barely enough to conduct checking on 10 roads a day apart from managing other duties such as regular traffic management and VIP escorts. As of now, traffic police have been asked to verify original licence during routine vehicle checking. City Police Commissioner A. Amalraj said that traffic police were effectively enforcing the new order.
