Tank filled with water awaits devotees at Thula Kattam
Arrangements are in place for the celebration of Cauvery Maha Pushkaram at Thula Kattam, the mouth of the river, in Mayiladuthurai from September 12 to 24.
Since the particular configuration of stars happens once in 144 years, the organisers have constructed a tank for the devotees to have a holy dip as it is believed that it not only cleanses the inner selves but washes away evil.
All through the grand celebration, there will be Veda Parayanam, Homam, Maha Yengam, cultural activities such as music, traditional dances, spiritual discourses, Cauvery Arthi, Thirumurai (Tamil Vedas) Parayanam, Annadanam, poor feeding, and pithru tharpanam.
A permanent tank with concrete flooring and one feet of sand has been constructed to hold water to a depth of two feet. Water has been filled into the tank from a borewell using a 10 hp motor.
The tank will be maintained permanently to address water scarcity in the area, as per the plan of the district administration.
Nevertheless, the organisers expect the Tamil Nadu Government to release water stored at Kallanai for the convenience of the several thousands of devotees converging in Kumbakonam and Thiruvaiyaru.
There is still time for the government to ensure that the devotees do not go back disappointed, Chairman of Cauvery Pushkaram Festival Commitee Swami Ramananda said.
The organising committee, he said, has been advising devotees anticipating water flow in the river to go to Mayanur in Karur district; Kodumudi and Bhavani Kooduthurai in Erode district; and Mettur in Salem district.
There is enough inflow into Tamil Nadu from Karnataka for release of water from the Mettur dam. Efforts were still on to prevail upon the government to ensure water flow into the river during the festival, Swami Ramananda said.
Parking points
For the convenience of devotees coming for a holy dip, the district administration has put up the map of the location at various points. Buses coming from Sirkazhi need to be parked at the temporary bus stand created opposite to Maruti showroom.
A parking lot has also been created close to TVS new showroom along the Poompuhar Road.
Vehicles coming from Manalmedu, Kumbakonam and Needur have to be parked at Mayiladuthurai old bus stand, and those coming from Senbanarkovil would have to be stationed at the grounds of Chinna Mariaman Kovil near Dhrumapuram Arch. For vehicles coming from Thiruvarur, a temporary shelter has been created at Rathinam Nagar near Seenivasapuram.
At Srirangam
Elaborate arrangements have been made for the Cauvery Maha Pushkaram that begins on Tuesday.
It will be celebrated for 12 days from September 12 to September 23.
It is estimated that at least 20,000 devotees across the country mainly from Andhra Pradesh and Telengana are expected to visit Srirangam daily.
The organisers have lined up various programmes including homams, special pujas and cultural events.
Though the festival is being viewed as a private one, the district administration conducted a review meeting a few days ago to discuss the steps to be taken for providing amenities to the devotees.
A senior official said that Tiruchi Corporation, Public Health, police, Public Works Department, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments and Tourism have been asked to provide necessary facilities to the devotees.
As of now there was no chance for opening Mettur dam for the festival.
If the dam level shot up to 90 feet, there might be chances for water flow in Cauvery particularly during the last leg of the 12 day-festival.
Water would be made available to the devotees at Amma mandapam bathing gate, sources said.
