ரேங்க் முறையை ஒழித்து கிரேட் முறையைக் கொண்டு வந்திருக்கும் முதல் பொதுத்தேர்வு முடிவு இது! ஆரோக்கியமான கல்விச்சூழலை நோக்கி தனது முதல் அடியை எடுத்து வைத்திருக்கிறது தமிழக அரசு. ஸ்டேட் ஃபர்ஸட் வாங்கணும்... டிவியில பேட்டிகொடுக்கணும் என்கிற மாயை இனிமேல் இல்லை. முதல் மூன்று இடங்களைப் பிடித்த மாணவர்கள் டி.வியில் காட்டப்படுவார்கள். அவர்களுக்கு கேக் ஊட்டி பாராட்டும்போது ஒரே ஒரு மதிப்பெண் குறைந்து நான்காவது இடம் பிடித்த அரசுப் பள்ளி மாணவனோ மாணவியோ மனஉலைச்சலுக்கு ஆளாகி நிற்கவேண்டிய அவசியம் இனி இருக்காது.

ஆனால், இக்கட்டான சூழலைக் கடந்து போராடி நல்ல மதிப்பெண்களை பெரும் மாணவர்களை நாம் அடையாளப்படுத்தித்தான் ஆகவேண்டும். பெருமைக்காக இல்லை. தன்னம்பிக்கைக்காக.

கோவைத் துணி வணிகர் சங்க அரசு மகளிர் மேல்நிலைப் பள்ளியில் படித்து 1,111 மதிப்பெண்கள் பெற்றிருக்கும் யோகேஷ்வரி, ஐந்து வயதிலேயே அப்பா இறந்துவிட, அம்மாவின் அரவணைப்பிலேயே வளர்ந்த பெண். அம்மா வளர்த்த பிள்ளை என்பதற்கு அடையாளமாய் பேசவே தயங்குகிறார். அவ்வளவு கூச்சம். வாழ்த்துகள் சொல்லி பேசவைத்தோம். ''காலேஜ் போகப்போற இனிமேலும் இப்படியே இருந்தா வேலைக்கு ஆகாது அவுங்க கேக்குற கேள்விக்குப் பதில் சொல்லு'' என்று செல்லமாக அதட்டுகிறார் யோகேஷ்வரியின் அம்மா மகேஷ்வரி. நீண்ட மௌனத்துக்குப் பிறகு தயக்கம் உடைத்த யோகேஷ்வரி.

“எனக்கு என்ன பேசுறதுன்னே தெரியலண்ணே. இந்த ரேங்க் ஃபார்மெட்டை ஒழிச்சதுல எங்கள மாதிரியான பிள்ளைங்களுக்கு ரொம்ப சந்தோஷம். ஆரம்பத்துல இருந்து நான் தமிழ் மீடியம்தான். அப்பா முகத்தைப் பார்த்ததே இல்லை. எல்லாமே அம்மாதான். அம்மா பட்ட கஷ்டத்தைப் பத்துவருஷமா கண்கூடா பாத்துகிட்டே இருந்ததலானதான் படிப்போட அருமை என்னன்னு புரிஞ்சது. அம்மா தவணை முறையில துணி வியாபாரம் பாக்குறாங்க. அதுலதான் எங்க குடும்பம் ஓடுது. எனக்கு அடுத்து ஒரு தம்பி இருக்கான். அவனும் கவர்மென்ட் ஸ்கூல்தான். அம்மா தெனமும் காலையில துணிகளை விக்கிறதுக்கு வீடுவீடா கிளம்பிருவாங்க. இந்த தொழில்ல போட்ட காசை ஒருநாளும் முழுசா பார்க்க முடியாதுண்ணே. அம்மா 5000 ரூபாய்க்கு மொத்தமா துணி வாங்கி விக்கிறாங்கண்ணே. அதை வித்து பணத்தை வாங்குறதுக்கு அவுங்க நடையாய் நடக்கணும். பலபேர் முழுசா தரமாட்டாங்க. நூறு ரூபாயை வாங்க ஒரு வீட்டுக்கு நூறு முறை ஏறி இறங்குவாங்க. அதப் பார்க்கும்போது மனசு ரொம்ப வலிக்கும்ண்ணே.

அப்படி சிறுகச்சிறுக சேர்த்துதான் நாங்க கேட்டதெல்லாம் வாங்கிகொடுத்து எந்த குறையில்லாம வளர்த்தாங்க. துணி வியாபாரம்தான் பாக்குறாங்க ஆனா.. அம்மா இதுவரைக்கும் ஆசையா அவுங்களுக்குனு ஒரு புதுப்புடவை வாங்கி நான் பார்த்ததே இல்லண்ணே" என்று யோகேஷ்வரி கண்கள் கலங்க, மகேஷ்வரியின் கண்கள் கலங்கி நிற்கிறது.

''அவுங்களுக்கு ஆசை என்னன்னா நானும் தம்பியும் நல்லா படிக்கணும் அவ்வளவுதான். அதுலயும் குறிப்பா என்னைய பெரிய அளவுல படிக்க வைக்கணும்னு அவுங்களுக்கு அவ்வளவு வைராக்கியம். 'நாளைக்கு இன்னொருத்தனை நம்பிப் போய் என்னைய மாதிரி நீ.. சீரழிஞ்சிற கூடாதுடீ. அதுக்காகத்தான் சொல்றேன் ஒழுங்கா படிச்சி உன் சொந்தக் கால்ல நிக்க கத்துக்கோ’னு அடிக்கடி சொல்லிகிட்டே இருப்பாங்க. நான் சின்ன வயசுல இருந்தே நல்லா படிப்பேன்ணே. டென்த்ல 488 மார்க் எடுத்து நான்தான் ஸ்கூல் ஃபர்ஸ்ட். இப்போ 1,111 மார்க். அம்மாவுக்கு நான் டாக்டராகணும்னு ஆசை. எனக்கு இன்ஜினீயராகணும்னு விருப்பம், அதுமட்டும்தான் ஒரே குழப்பம். மத்தபடி எங்க அம்மா இன்னைக்கு ஹேப்பிண்ணே. எனக்குப் பரீட்சை வந்துட்டா எங்க அம்மா தூங்கவே தூங்காது. நாலு மணிக்கே எழுந்துருச்சி. காபி போட்டு வச்சிகிட்டு எழுப்பி படிக்கச் சொல்லும். பரிச்சை ரிசல்ட் வர வரைக்கும் எங்க அம்மா நிம்மதியா தூங்கவே இல்லண்ணே.. 1150க்குமேல எதிர்பார்த்தேன். அம்மா திட்டுவாங்களோன்னு நெனச்சேன் 1,111 நல்ல மார்க்தான் இதுக்கெல்லாம் வருத்தப்படாத.. உன்னை நிச்சயம் பெரிய ஆளாக்கி காட்டுவேன்னு ஆட்டோபுடிச்சு பள்ளிக்கூடத்துக்கு கூட்டிகிட்டு வந்துட்டாங்கண்ணே. டீச்சர்ஸ்கிட்ட என்ன படிக்கலாம்னு சஜெஷன் கேட்கப் போறோம்'' என்று யோகேஷ்வரி முடிக்க.
''இதுல என்ன அதிசயம் இருக்கு தம்பி. இதுதானே ஒரு தாயோட கடமை. நாளைக்கு இவ பிள்ளையையும் இப்படித்தான் விழுந்து விழுந்து கவனிக்கப்போறா. என்ன ஒண்ணு என்னைய மாதிரி சந்தி சிரிக்காம அவ நல்லபடியா வாழணும் எனக்கு அதுபோதும்'' என்று முடித்தார்.

கஷ்டத்தை நினைத்துப் படித்தேன்..

நெல்லையில் சிறு வயதிலேயே தந்தையை இழந்து, வறுமையில் வாடிய சிறுமி ப்ளஸ் 2 தேர்வில் 1162 மதிப்பெண் பெற்று சாதனைப் படைத்து உள்ளார். அவரைச் சந்திக்கச் சென்றோம். பாளையங்கோட்டை அண்ணாநகர் பகுதியில் உள்ள வீட்டுக்குள் சென்றதுமே வறுமையின் சுவடுகள் அப்பட்டமாகத் தெரிந்தன. தினக்கூலியாக தனியார் நிறுவனத்தில் வேலைக்குச் சென்று விட்ட பாமாவின் தாயாருக்கு விடுப்பு அளிக்க நிர்வாகம் மறுத்து விட்டதால் அவர் வீட்டில் இருக்கவில்லை. தாத்தா குணசேகரன், பாட்டி ஜெயபாரதி, தங்கை சரண்யாவுடன் இருந்த பாமாவிடம் பேசினோம். ''நெறைய மார்க்ஸ் எடுப்பேன்னு நினைச்சேன் சார்'' என்று பேச்சில் ஏமாற்றம் குடிகொண்டிருக்கிறது. சமாதானப்படுத்தி பேச வைத்தோம்.

‘‘எனக்கு நினைவு தெரியுறதுக்கு முன்னாடியே அப்பாவை இழந்துட்டேன். அம்மாதான் எல்லாமுமா இருந்தாங்க. எங்க வீட்டோட கஷ்டத்தை அடிக்கடி எடுத்துச் சொல்லி, ‘நீ நல்லாப் படிச்சு முன்னேறினாத்தான் நம்ம குடும்பமே முன்னுக்கு வரும்’னு சொல்வாங்க. அம்மாவுக்கு ஒடம்பு அடிக்கடி சரியில்லாம போகும்.

அதெல்லாம் பார்த்து வளர்ந்ததுனாலேயே படிப்புல எப்பவும் கவனமா இருப்பேன். ஸ்கூல் முடிச்சு வீட்டுக்கு வந்ததும் வீட்டு வேலை செய்ஞ்சுட்டு பிறகு பாடத்தைப் படிப்பேன். பொதுத் தேர்வுல இன்னும் நெறைய மார்க் எடுப்பேன்னு நினைச்சேன் சார். எடுத்திருக்கணும்
பி.காம் படிக்கணும்னு ஆசை சார். நான் வேலைக்குப் போய் என்னோட தங்கச்சிய நல்லா படிக்க வைக்கணும். அதுதான் என் லட்சியம்" என்கிறார் உறுதியான குரலில்.

பாமாவின் தாத்தா குணசேகரன், ‘‘சின்ன வயசிலேயே எல்லாக் கஷ்டத்தையும் பார்த்துட்டா. அதனாலேயே வீட்டுக்கு வந்துட்டா புக்கும் கையுமாதான் இருப்பா. நல்லா படிச்சு குடும்ப கஷ்டத்தை போக்கணும்னு சொல்லிட்டே இருப்பா. இதுவரைக்கும் கஷ்டப்பட்டு படிக்க வைச்சுட்டோம். இனி காலேஜ் சேர்க்கிறதுக்கு பணத்தை தெரட்டனும்'' என்கிறவரின் குரலில் கவலையில் தேய்கிறது.

சுவாதிலெட்சுமி - உடுமலைப் பேட்டை

சுவாதிலெட்சுமியின் சொந்த ஊர் உடுமலைப்பேட்டையிலிருந்து சுமார் 15 கிமீ தூரத்தில் இருக்கும் தளி எனும் கிராமம். அப்பா ஹோட்டலில் புரோட்டா மாஸ்டர். எளிமையான குடும்பம். சுவாதியின் அக்காவை  ப்ளஸ் 2 வகுப்புக்கு மேல் படிக்க வைக்கும் சூழலில் குடும்பம் இல்லை. சுவாதி, திருமூர்த்தி நகரில் படித்துவந்தார். 10-ம் வகுப்பில் 481 மதிப்பெண்களைப் பெற்றார். இவரின் ஆர்வத்தைப் பார்த்த அறிவியல் ஆசிரியர் உடுமலைப் பேட்டையில் ஶ்ரீ விசாலாட்சி பெண்கள் மேல்நிலைப் பள்ளியில் சேர்த்துவிட்டார். வீட்டின் சிரமங்களைக் கடந்து, இன்று ப்ளஸ் 2 வகுப்பில் 1070 மதிப்பெண்களைப் பெற்றிருக்கிறார்.

"எங்க வீட்டிலருந்து ஸ்கூலுக்கு வர்றதுக்கு ஒரு மணி நேரம் ஆகிடும். ஆனாலும் எனக்கு அது தூரமாக தெரியல. ஏன்னா... கண்ணபிரான் சார் ஃப்ரியாக டியூசன் சொல்லிக்கொடுத்தாங்க. அது எனக்குப் பெரிய உதவியாக இருந்தது. நான் ஆயிரத்துக்கு மேல் மார்க் எடுப்பேனு என்னை விட அவங்கதான் நம்பினார்கள். எனக்கு பி.எஸ்எஸி கணக்கு படிச்சு, குரூப் எக்ஸாம் எழுதி நல்ல வேலைக்குப் போகணும்னு ஆசை. ஆனா யாராவது ஹெல்ப் பண்ணணும் சார். அப்பாவால என்ன படிக்க வைக்க முடியல. அதனால காலேஜ் சேரணும்னா யாராவது ஸ்பான்சர் பண்ணினாதான் உண்டு. இல்லாட்டி படிக்காம வீட்ல" எனும்போதே சுவாதியின் குரல் உடைவதை உணர முடிந்தது.

சுவாதி குறிப்பிடும் கண்ணபிரான் அறிவியல் ஆசிரியர். அவரிடம் பேசியபோது, "சுவாதி படிக்கும்போது பக்கத்தில் என்ன நடந்தாலும் அவருக்குத் தெரியாது அவ்வளவு ஈடுபாட்டோடு படிப்பாங்க. தேவையில்லாமல் லீவு எடுக்க மாட்டாங்க. டி.என்.பி.சிக்கு கிளாஸ் எடுக்கும்போதும் சுவாதியும் கூட உட்கார்ந்து கேட்பாங்க. அந்த ஆர்வம்தான் இந்தளவு வெற்றியைக் கொடுத்திருக்கு. சுவாதி ஆசைப்படுற மாதிரி மேல் படிப்பு படிக்க, யாரேனும் உதவினால்தான் சாத்தியமாகும். அதற்கான முயற்சிகளில்தான் ஈடுபட்டிருக்கிறோம்" என்றார்.

எளியக் குடும்பத்திலிருந்து கல்வியின் கரம்பிடித்து முன்னேறத் துடிக்கும் சுவாதியின் நியாயமான கனவுகள் நிறைவேறட்டும்.

விரைவில் 5G ??

4G நெட்வொர்க் தெரியும்... 5G நெட்வொர்க்கில் என்னவெல்லாம் இருக்கும் தெரியுமா..?

4G நெட்வொர்க் சேவை இந்தியாவில் மிகப்பெரிய டிஜிட்டல் புரட்சியையே ஏற்படுத்தியிருக்கிறது என்று உறுதியாகச் சொல்லலாம்.

தொலைக்காட்சியில் கிரிக்கெட் மேட்ச் பார்க்க முடியாத சூழ்நிலையில் ஸ்கோர்கார்டை ஸ்க்ரோல் செய்த இளைஞர்கள், இன்று லைவ் ஸ்ட்ரீமிங்கில் மொபைலிலேயே மேட்ச் பார்த்து ட்வீட் தட்டுகின்றனர். வீடியோ கால், மிகப்பெரிய ஃபைல்களையும் நிமிடங்களில் டவுன்லோடு செய்வது என பலரின் இணையப் பயன்பாடே மாறியுள்ளது.

4G சிம் பயன்படுத்தக்கூடிய மொபைல்களை மட்டுமே அனைவரும் தேடி வாங்குகின்றனர். இந்நிலையில், 2G, 3G, 4G வரிசையில் அடுத்ததாக வரவிருக்கும் 5G பற்றிய எதிர்பார்ப்பு எகிறிக் கிடக்கிறது. 5G நெட்வொர்க் சேவையில் என்னென்ன வசதிகள் இருக்கும் எனப் பார்ப்போமா!

4G நெட்வொர்க்கை மிஞ்சும் 5G!

1G, 2G, 3G, 4G போன்றவற்றில் குறிப்பிடப்படும் G என்பது தலைமுறையைக் (Generation) குறிக்கும். அது இணையத்தையோ அல்லது இணையத்தின் வேகத்தையோ குறிப்பதில்லை. 4G நெட்வொர்க் சேவையில் உள்ள வசதிகளை விடவும் மேம்பட்ட, அடுத்த தலைமுறை வசதிகளை உள்ளடக்கியது தான் 5G. ஒவ்வொரு தலைமுறை நெட்வொர்க் சேவையிலும் இருக்க வேண்டிய வசதிகளைப் பற்றி, ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சபையின் ஓர் அங்கமான இன்டர்நேஷனல் டெலிகம்யூனிகேஷன்ஸ் யூனியன் (International Telecommunications Union) தான் வரையறுக்கிறது. அந்த வரையறையின் அடிப்படையில் தான் மொபைல் உற்பத்தி நிறுவனங்களும், தொலைத்தொடர்பு நிறுவனங்களும் தங்களது உற்பத்தியையும், சேவையையும் வழங்குகின்றன. இந்நிலையில், 5G நெட்வொர்க் சேவையில் கண்டிப்பாக இருக்க வேண்டிய சில வசதிகள் பற்றி சமீபத்தில் ஐ.டி.யூ அறிக்கை வெளியிட்டுள்ளது.

தடையற்ற தொலைத்தொடர்பு :

தங்கு தடையற்ற தொலைத்தொடர்பு சேவையே 5G-யின் முக்கிய நோக்கமாகும். ஒரு டவர் இருக்கும் பகுதியைக் கடந்து, மற்றொரு டவர் இருக்கும் பகுதிக்குப் பயணிக்கும்போது சிக்னல் கட் ஆகும் பிரச்னை தற்போது இருக்கிறது. பேசிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் போதே அழைப்பு துண்டிக்கப்படும் 'கால் ட்ராப்' பிரச்னை கண்டிப்பாக 5G-யில் இருக்கக்கூடாது என்கிறது ஐ.டி.யூ. ஒரு மணி நேரத்தில் 500 கி.மீ வேகத்தில் பயனாளர் வெவ்வேறு டவர்களைக் கடந்து ரயிலில் பயணிக்கும்போது கூட சிக்னல் கட் ஆகக்கூடாது என ஐ.டி.யூ வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளது.

இணைய வேகம் :

ஓர் இணைப்பிலிருந்து மற்றொரு இணைப்புக்குத் தகவலைப் பரிமாறிக்கொள்ள எடுத்துக்கொள்ளும் நேரம் குறையக்குறைய இணையத்தின் வேகம் அதிகமாக இருக்கும். 5G நெட்வொர்க் சேவையில் இந்த நேரமானது 4 மில்லி செகண்ட் முதல் 1 மில்லி செகண்ட் அளவுக்குள்தான் இருக்க வேண்டும். அதிவேகமாக செயல்படும் 4G சேவையில் கூட, டேட்டாவை பரிமாறிக்கொள்ள 50 மில்லி செகண்ட்கள் ஆகின்றன.

பேட்டரி திறன் :

4G நெட்வொர்க்கைப் பயன்படுத்தும் அனைவருக்கும் மொபைல் பேட்டரியின் சார்ஜ் விரைவில் தீர்ந்துவிடும் பிரச்னை இருக்கும். இதை ஈடுசெய்வதற்காகவே முன்பை விட அதிக திறன் கொண்ட பேட்டரியை மொபைல் உற்பத்தியாளர்கள் தயாரித்து வருகின்றனர். 5G நெட்வொர்க் சேவையிலும் நீடித்த பேட்டரித் திறன் அவசியம் என ஐ.டி.யூ வலியுறுத்தியுள்ளது.

எப்போது அறிமுகமாகும்?

CHENNAI: ONE would have expected the pressure on teenagers to have come down this year with the abolition of the rank system. However, statistics from government 104 helpline paints a different picture.
On Friday, it received over 10,600 calls from students, parents, friends and relatives seeking psychological counselling and general enquiries to cope with suicidal tendencies due to failure in exams or not being able to live up to expectations.

“The students who scored less marks were worried if they could get medical or engineering seat. Most of them worried whether their marks along with NEET score would be sufficient to get them medical seat,” said B Elayaraja, counselling psychologist at 104 helpline.

“A girl from Vellore district locked herself up in her room after she scored less marks. Then her parents called 104 and passed on the phone to her through a window. After counselling, she opened the door and came out,” said Elayaraja.

The counsellor also said there were many students who scored over 1,000, but were not satisfied. “One girl had stood first in class in the school revision exam, so she was expecting good marks. She scored around 1,100 in the boards, but was not satisfied.  She was highly depressed,” added Elayaraja. “Likewise Kavitha*, a teenager, from a rural village who scored 1,050 marks. She attempted suicide by consuming poison claiming she did not score the expected marks,” said B Prabhudoss, regional manager (Tamil Nadu) of GVK-EMRI.

The counsellors also said there were calls from parents after their children walked away from home after seeing the results. “A father called up after his son scored less marks and walked away from home. He claimed the boy switched off his phone after boarding a bus. We suggested lodging of a police complaint,” said Elayaraja.

Most students had failed in one or more subjects. Most of the teenagers also worried about their career options. They need counselling on career guidence. That will release stress, said another counsellor. However, the overall stress on students was comparatively less this year, feels Prabhudoss. The helpline offered 24x7 counselling for students on the day of results were announced.

Suicide bid before results were out

A girl awaiting her results set herself on fire even before they were declared. The girl who studied at a private school at Butt Road in Chennai was waiting for the results while her parents were upstairs in their residence at Ramapuram.  Around 9.35 am, she allegedly entered the kitchen, poured kerosene and set herself ablaze. Her parents took her to Kilpauk Medical College. She sustained 100 per cent burns.

199.25 PCB average not NEET enough

TIRUPUR: SHE scored 1,191 on 1,200 in Plus Two State board exams with 200 in physics, 199 in chemistry and 199 in biology, the three subjects that mattered for medical cut-off had National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) not kicked in this year. And by the way, Sharmila scored a centum in mathematics as well. Incidentally, she was a State Class X board topper in 2015 with 499 marks on 500.

Despite her current PCB average standing at 199.25, which would otherwise have easily fetched her a medical seat, Sharmila fears she might not make it as she expects only about 50 per cent marks in the NEET exam she took recently.
“In the NEET exam, I answered all questions that were part of the syllabus I studied at the higher secondary level. But questions from out of syllabus were difficult,” she rues, unable to celebrate her good academic performance.
If she fails to get an MBBS seat, she would rather opt for a course in pharmacy or veterinary science than engineering, she says.

Daughter of farmer P Senthil Kumar of Nagappalayam village near Vellakoil, one of the rural pockets of Tirupur district, Sharmila is a student of Vivekananda Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Muthur.
Sharmila’s father had dropped out of school after Class VIII and her mother Muthulakshmi did elementary schooling. The family has 3.5 acre land, which is barren now because of drought. Their source of income is agriculture on the two acres leased by them. Sharmila has a younger brother who has just been promoted to Class X.

CBSE students wait for results, fear losing share of admission pie

CHENNAI: With about 10 more days to go for CBSE Plus Two board results, students are getting fidgety. They fear most seats in premium arts and science colleges would get filled with State board students before May 24, their tentative result date. In a few city colleges, the last date for submission of application forms is two days after the tentative date for CBSE results.

While cribbing that their State board cousins have an unfair advantage since their results are out early, CBSE students also fret over ‘liberal’ paper valuation under the State board.

“The engineering cut-off based on the State board results would be really high. We can’t match those scores. Moreover, we will have to wait for two more weeks by which time State board students would have cornered the most of the seats. Colleges should have separate cut-offs for State board and CBSE, going forward,” suggested R Vishal, who is waiting for his Plus Two CBSE results.

Dhyan Bohra, another CBSE Plus Two student, claimed Anna University prefers State board students. “Majority of the students from  the State board apply for seats in Anna University. The cut-off is around 199, which the State board students score easily. But 199 in CBSE  is not easy. Even management quota would be filled  by State board students,” he rued.

Ragini Srinivasan, a parent, said: “In most of the colleges the deadline would be two days after the CBSE result. Within those two days, students are supposed to submit the forms. But they can’t apply in many places within such a short span,” she said. “Colleges should extend the last date of submission of applications for CBSE students,” she said demanding a level playing field.

However, a senior Principal from a CBSE school said there is a gap of 20 days every year between State board results and CBSE. “There are certain colleges that give preference to CBSE students, so students need not worry,” said Ajeeth Prasath Jain, a senior Principal of a CBSE school.

Lalitha Balakrishnan, Principal of MOP Vaishnav College, said whichever board results are out, 10 days would be given to each of the boards. “CBSE students will also get a fair chance.” P C A Vairamani, secretary of KCS Kasi Nadar College of Arts and  Science, echoed her, saying his college reserves about 10 per cent  seats for CBSE students.

Fight for premium engineering colleges to be tougher this year

CHENNAI: With cut-off scores for engineering admission likely to increase by 0.25 to 0.5 marks this year, experts predict a tougher race for seats in premium colleges in the State. There has been a marginal drop (0.02 per cent) in total number of centums in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics combined -- subjects considered for engineering cut-off calculation. However, when taken separately, there are more centums in maths this year compared to last and nearly 94,400 science students have scored more than 1000 out of 1,200. According to last year’s data, 2,884 students scored above the cut-off mark of 196.75 and 21,420 students were above the cut-off of 185.75.

This means, there were at least 1,400 students for every one cut-off mark, according to an analysis by Erode-based educational consultant Moorthy Selvakumaran. “But this year, there will be 1,500 students for every one cut-off mark. That is, hundred more students compared to last year competing for admissions within a one-mark range,” he says. “Due to a rise in centums in maths, the effect will be more profound on those whose cut-off ranges between 185 and 194.75.” Educationist Prince Gajendra Babu says the trend of students opting out of engineering course could further increase.

“The number of students who score below 185 and opt out of engineering has grown over the last few years,” says educationist Prince Gajendra Babu. “With an increase in the dropout ratio and competition to get campus placements, the trend of more students opting out of engineering might continue this year.”

“In the last few years, there has been a spike in number of students who have scored below 185 and moved away from engineering. With increased dropout ratio and competition to land campus placements, it was likely that this trend might continue this year,” says Babu.
Nearly 1,000 students lost centums in biology-based courses this year, compared to 2016. “Students who were uncertain over their performance in the NEET will prefer agriculture and veterinary courses, the admissions for which were based only on Class XII scores,” Selvakumaran added.
Also, experts have predicted that the minimum cut-off required for admission into these courses will come down by one mark since there were lesser number of centums in biology and chemistry subjects.

Also, with regard to commerce students, the high demand for B Com (general) courses continued this year with leading arts and science colleges in the city closing the application counter for this particular course on Friday.

Don't be arrogant: Court to petitioners





In a setback to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul, the Delhi high court on Friday decli ned to entertain a plea by Young Indian Pvt Ltd (YIL) challeng ing the income tax department notices served on the company , clearing the decks for an I-T probe.

 

The Gandhis are the main stakeholders in YIL and have been accused by BJP MP Subramanian Swamy of cheating and misappropriating funds linked to National Herald newspaper.
A bench of Justices S Muralidhar and Chander Shekhar said Young Indian should approach the I-T authorities first and raise its grievances there rather than directly moving court.

“We are not inclined to entertain your writ petition. It is better you withdraw and approach the income tax assessing officer,“ the court observed while refusing relief. Don't be arrogant,“ it counselled the petition ers, pointing out that in case YI is unable to get relief from I-T authorities, it can approach court. But, as the company has not even approached the assessing officer, it should submit documents before the department. Sensing the mood of the bench, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for the firm, withdrew the petition, which was allowed by the court that termed it as “dismissed as withdrawn“.

After a trial court allowed the I-T department to go ahead with its probe, YI had approached the HC seeking a direction to stay the I-T proceedings and sought quashing of reassessment notices issued against it with regard to the National Herald misappropriation of assets case. The company was issued notices regarding assessment year 201112. The I-T department's move to issue notices followed its probe on Swamy's complaint alleging that the Gandhis had misappropriated the assets of Associated Journals Limited (AJL), including vast land holdings, while transferring their shares to the newly formed Young Indian.

Swamy's criminal complaint filed in court accuses the Gandhis and other Congress leaders of conspiring to cheat and misappropriate funds to take full control of AJL. Swamy has argued that Young Indian, controlled by the Gandhis, purchased AJL for Rs 50 lakh, taking over the right to recover a loan of Rs 90.25 crore that AJL owed to Congress.

By being in controlling position in YI and Congress, the Gandhis and other leaders such as Motilal Vora, Oscar Fernandes, Suman Dubey and Sam Pitroda conspired to take over AJL with an eye on its huge properties, Swamy has claimed. In his complaint, he alleged that Congress granted an interest-free loan of Rs 90.25 crore to AJL, owner of the National Herald newspaper established by Jawaharlal Nehru.But in repaying the loan, YI stepped in to take over AJL.

The Gandhis and other accused have strongly denied the allegations. However in 2014, a trial court had summoned them as accused following which they failed to get relief from the high court and were forced to appear in court on December 19, 2015 to obtain bail.They were summoned by the trial court for the alleged offences of dishonest misappropriation of property , criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal conspiracy .

In HC, the I-T department too opposed the petition, arguing that the firm has not moved the assessing officer and it can't straightaway approach the court without availing the existing legal remedies first.

Calcutta HC Judge Is Still Underground 

 

The Calcutta high court judge C S Karnan continued to remain firmly underground on a day when the Supreme Court refused to suspend its order awarding six-month jail term to him for contempt of court.

 

A police team from West Bengal, headed by a directorgeneral of police-rank officer, could not pursue any lead even three days after it landed in Chennai to arrest the judge and lodge him in jail as directed by the Supreme Court on May 9.

“Neither the West Bengal police nor the Tamil Nadu police could establish any contact with any source having even remote knowledge of the judge's whereabouts,“ an officer told TOI.
A former staffer of the judge, denying any knowledge of his location, said one could send queries by WhatsApp.

Earlier in the day , as Justice Karnan's lawyer pleaded with the Supreme Court for an urgent hearing on suspension of sentence, the bench of Chief Justice J S Khehar asked him to first file petition before the registry and the case would be heard by the same bench which had held the judge guilty for contempt.

Justice Khehar said it was a “conscious“ decision taken by the seven-judge bench and any plea against the order would be heard by the same bench. Advocate Mathews J Nedumpara, appearing for Justice Karnan who has been evading arrest, tried to hand over the copy of the petition to the CJI but he refused to accept it. “We are not the registry. You file the petition before the registry . You cannot keep on handing papers to us. You have to follow the procedure,“ Justice Khehar said.
As the Supreme Court has gone into summer recess, it is unlikely that the seven-judge bench, which had sentenced Justice Karnan, would assemble to hear his plea for suspension of his sentence.
The seven-judge bench of the apex court had on May 9 passed the order sentencing Justice Karnan to jail by holding him guilty of contempt of court and sentencing him to six months imprisonment, a day after he defiantly ordered eight apex court judges to be put behind bars. It had also ordered the West Bengal police to take him into custody immediately.

Signal Boosters Yet To Be Installed In Tunnels, Say Officials 

 

Commuters may not have network connectiv ity on their mobile phones when metro rail trains start running between Thiruman galam and Nehru Park on Sunday , as signal boosters are yet to be installed in the tunnels on the stretch. However, passengers may find it easy to access the stations from nearby neighbourhoods in the coming months, as cmrl officials are in talks with MTC and cab aggregators.

 

Metrorail officials said at least for the next three months there may not be mobile connectivity in the tunnels.“Installations of the boosters will take at least another two to three months,“ said VK Singh, chief general manager, underground section.

Narasimha Prasad, director, Operations said they are in talks with the state transport authority to get feeder service and cab aggregators to provide commuters with last mile connectivity. Cabs and share autos may get dedicated parking spaces in the stations, so passengers may be able to use these services without any hassle.

“For two-wheelers and four-wheelers, there is ample parking space in stations like Thirumangalam and Nehru Park and limited space in Anna Nagar Tower and Anna Nagar East,“ officials said.Travelling by underground line will be safe, as metrorail staff demonstrated the working of tunnel ventilation system.

மே 15-ம் தேதி, வெளியூரில் இருந்து சென்னைக்கு வரும் ரசிகர்கள், காலை 7 மணிக்கே ஸ்ரீராகவேந்திரா மண்டபத்துக்கு வருமாறு சொல்லி இருக்கிறார்கள். காலை 7 மணிக்கு வரும் அனைத்து ரசிகர்களுக்கும் ராகவேந்திரா கல்யாண மண்டபத்தில் சிற்றுண்டி பரிமாறப்படும். சரியாக காலை 9 மணிக்கு வரும் ரஜினிக்கு, தனது ரசிகர்களுடன் சேர்ந்து ஆலோசனையோ, கலந்துரையாடலோ செய்யும் எண்ணம் துளியும் இல்லை. தன்னைத்தேடி வந்துள்ள ரசிகர்களுடன் இணைந்து போட்டோ மட்டுமே எடுத்துக்கொள்கிறார். தமிழகம் மற்றும் புதுச்சேரியில், பிளஸ்2 தேர்வு முடிவு இன்று வெளியானது. சிறையில் இருந்து தேர்வு எழுதியவர்களில் 85 பேர் தேர்ச்சியடைந்துள்ளனர்.

தமிழகம் மற்றும் புதுச்சேரியில், மார்ச் 1-ம் தேதி பிளஸ்2 வகுப்பு பொதுத்தேர்வு நடைபெற்றது. சுமார் 8 லட்சத்துக்கும் மேற்பட்ட மாணவ, மாணவிகள் இந்தத் தேர்வை எழுதியிருந்தனர். தமிழகம் மற்றும் புதுச்சேரியில் இன்று தேர்வு முடிவுகள் வெளியானது. இதில், இரு மாநிலங்களையும் சேர்த்து 92.1 சதவிகித மாணவ, மாணவிகள் தேர்ச்சிபெற்றுள்ளனர்.

கடந்த ஆண்டைவிட 0.7 சதவிகிதத் தேர்ச்சி அதிகரித்துள்ளது. மாணவர்களைவிட 5.2 சதவிகித மாணவிகள் தேர்ச்சிபெற்றுள்ளனர்.  94.5 சதவிகித மாணவிகள் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றுள்ளனர். 89.3 சதவிகித மாணவர்கள் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றுள்ளனர். சிறைக்கைதிகள் 95 பேர் பிளஸ்2 தேர்வை எழுதினர். அதில், 85 பேர் தேர்ச்சி அடைந்துள்ளனர்.

Tamil Nadu: Minister aide’s suicide note names income-tax official

It may be recalled that income tax officials raided Subrumaniam's residence simultaneously.

Chennai: A suicide note written by KR Subramaniam, health minister C.Vijayabhaskar's aide who killed himself in his farm in Namakkal on Monday, suggests that he ended his life due to extreme pressure from an income-tax official who wanted him to accept that he had carried out money transactions as a benami of the minister.

Besides naming a deputy director of the income-tax department based in Chennai for his decision to end his life, Subramaniam also named a former AIADMK minister and a senior IAS official as being responsible for his decision to consume poison. Without naming him, he said an IG rank IPS officer had also harassed him.

Not just that; Subramaniam also named his former partner in business and alleged he too was harassing him as he quit the partnership to launch on his own and managed to get government contracts for his now-independent construction company.

"My family was very upset from the time the IT raid happened (April 7). When I went to the IT officer's room (in Chennai office) in response to the summons, I was treated like a thief", said the 59-year-old contractor in the suicide note. Naming his 'tormenter', he alleged that the IT official had pressured him to admit he was the minister's benami. "He wanted me to accept all he said and threatened to finish me if I refuse to tow his line. All this forced me to decide to end my life".  Subramani allegedly committed suicide by drinking pesticide at his coconut farm 20 km from his house.

It may be recalled that income tax officials raided Subrumaniam's residence simultaneously when they launched the searches at the properties belonging to Dr Vijayabhaskar, his relatives and associates. The department had carried out raids in over 35 locations in Tamil Nadu. During the raid, several incriminating documents were reportedly seized by the I-T sleuths from Subramaniam's residence. At the time of the raids, Subramaniam was away in Switzerland and was summoned by the 'harassing' IT official on his return.

It was believed that he was close to the health minister. As a contractor who was running Abirami Engineering Construction & Co, he often managed to get tenders for government buildings funded by the state health ministry. He had recently completed the Pudukottai medical college building.

Pelican touches power lines, darkens sends south Chennai

Chennai: Several areas of South Chennai went without power for nearly six hours since 6am on Thursday after a pelican sat on, or touched, feeder lines from Kalivendapattu to Taramani sub-station. Staff checking the fault area later found the bird's charred body.

"Early in the morning, two feeder lines from Kalivendapattu to Taramani tripped. These lines bring power from south Tamil Nadu to the Taramani sub-station from where power is supplied to many areas in South Chennai. It is mostly wind, solar and power from Kudankulam which is being used on these feeder lines," said a senior Tangedco official.

Residents in areas like Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur, Kotturpuram, Alandur and parts of Velachery were forced to sweat it out for more than six hours. "Power was restorted in all areas by 1.30pm after the lines were repaired. Many employees had to walk several kilometers to check the line and find the fault area. That is why it took so long," he said.

On Wednesday evening, an overloaded feeder line from Manali to Tondiarpet snapped and several North Chennai areas were without power till Thursday morning.

"Power supply was disrupted in several areas in north and central Chennai since Wednesday evening due to a snag in feeder lines supplying to Tondiarpet substation. Washermenpet, Royapuram, Mannady, Sowcarpet, Chintadripet and Egmore and parts of Anna Salai were affected," he said.

A high tension line tripped, affecting supply to the Tondiarpet substation. "In most areas, power was restored by evening."

This is the second time this year that feeder lines have tripped in north and south Chennai. On April 27, a line in North Chennai tripped due to high atmospheric temperature and the load shifted to another line, resulting in all lines tripping within a few minutes. The Manali-Mylapore lines also sagged and tripped leading to blackouts. Last year, on April 30, many areas went without power after the Sriperumbudur-Taramani line tripped.

NABH accreditation now mandatory for chief minister’s insurance scheme empanelment

CHENNAI: After requesting and demanding hospitals to follow a protocol to maintain standards, the state has now made it mandatory for all medical institutions to get a certificate from the National Accreditation Board for Hospital and Healthcare providers if they want to continue their contract under the chief minister's insurance scheme.

According to the new empanelment policy under the Chief Minister' Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS), hospitals, both government and private, have to get basic level accreditation from NABH - a quasi-government body - within a year of them coming under the programme. Failing this, the state will terminate the contract.

Of the total 790 hospitals that were empanelled before the new policy came into force in January this year, 500 have renewed their contract. Of this only around 40 have NABH certificates.

T S Selvavinayagam, director of community medicine at Madras Medical College who is currently in charge of CMCHIS said the state had so far been insisting on the certificate only orally. "Our previous policy had mentioned high standards in hospitals as criteria for empanelment but didn't specify NABH. It was done more on voluntary basis," said Dr Selvavinayagam. In 2014, the government had set up a help centre to exclusively guide hospitals in obtaining NABH certificates. It also negotiated with the body to reduce the accreditation fee. The government even offered to increase reimbursement rates for accredited hospitals in an effort to lure them. Many private hospitals in the state get nearly 60% of their total revenue from the insurance scheme.

The NABH accreditation involves around 636 elements related to patient care. Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project which is tasked with implementing the scheme has asked hospitals to obtain an entry-level accreditation by following 30% of the total elements.

Through this, the state hopes to bring down complaints by patients who come under the scheme. "In some cases the complaints are directly linked to the treatment, like incorrect medication or negligence. But most return saying their treatment was delayed because of lack of infrastructure or manpower," said an official. The insurance covers 686 surgical and 215 medical procedures. From 2012 the scheme has covered the treatment of 17.63 lakh patients at a cost of more than Rs3,000 crore.

Dr Harish Nadkarni, chief executive officer of NABH, said around 225 medical institutions in Tamil Nadu have accreditation at present, including government and private hospitals and smaller nursing homes. Once they are recognized by the body, a team will be sent to undertake inspections once in 18 months. "In addition we will also conduct surprise visits. If we find any discrepancy, we will withdraw the certificate," he said.

Doctors TOI spoke to said one of the biggest problem they face while applying for the certificate is the massive paperwork involved.

மாணவ, மாணவியர்களே, நீங்கள் பறவைகளாக இருங்கள். உங்கள் இலக்குகள் வெறும் மதிப்பெண்கள் மட்டுமல்ல. நாளை என்ற நாளின் மீது நம்பிக்கை கொள்ளும் பக்குவம் உங்களிடத்தில் உள்ளது. எதிர்ப்பார்ப்புக்கு மீறி நீங்கள் பெற்ற மதிப்பெண்கள் குறைந்து போயிருக்கலாம். அந்த மனநிலை நம்மைத் துன்புறுத்தலாம். பலநாள் தூக்கம் துறந்து, கேளிக்கைகள் தவிர்த்து, புத்தகங்களே கண்ணாக, பாடங்களே கவனமாக, தேர்வே இலக்காகக் கொண்டு, நேர்த்தியான திட்டங்களை வகுத்து அர்ப்பணிப்புடன் செயல்பட்டிருப்பீர்கள். ஆனால் எந்தப் புள்ளியிலோ உங்களுடைய இந்த உழைப்புக்கான பலன் கை தவறிப் போயிருக்கலாம்.

ICMR head named to UN group on antimicrobial resistance

Indian Council of Medical Research director Soumya Swaminathan has been named to a high-level group set up by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to provide expertise on and coordinate the global fight against antimicrobial resistance.

Swaminathan, 57, has been named to the ad hoc Interagency Coordination Group on Antimicrobial Resistance, which will be co-chaired by Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed and World Health Organisation Director-General Margaret Chan.

Swaminathan is also Secretary, Department of Health Research in India's Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

A multi award-winning paediatrician and clinical scientist, she is known for her research on tuberculosis. She joined the Tuberculosis Research Centre, Chennai in 1992 and has spent the past 23 years in health research.

She has a Fellowship in Neonatology and Paediatric Pulmonology from at the Children s Hospital of Los Angeles at University of Southern California and is also Chair, HIV Section, at International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases, according to her profile on ICMR s website.

After completing her MBBS from the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune she did her MD in Pediatrics from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

Last September, UN Member States adopted the Political Declaration of the High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance that contained a request for the UN Secretary-General to establish such a body.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) happens when microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites change when they are exposed to antimicrobial drugs antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, antimalarials, and anthelmintics.

Microorganisms that develop antimicrobial resistance are sometimes referred to as "superbugs." As a result, the medicines become ineffective and infections persist in the body, increasing the risk of spread to others.

"As we enter the era of sustainable development, I would like to emphasize that antimicrobial resistance really does pose a formidable threat to the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in our developing countries," Mohammed said.

She added that the creation of the UN joint agency group to combat AMR and advise on the global effort, is a sign of how seriously UN Member States were taking the threat.

She said AMR is a "multi-sectoral problem" affecting human and animal health, agriculture, as well as the global environment and trade.

 Counselling for PG medical admission begins

Confusion on day one as there was no clarity on fee and students received letters late

The Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) counselling for postgraduate medical seats, which was postponed on May 5, was held on Thursday. While 35 candidates chose from the 50% reserved for PG medical seats on Thursday morning, nearly 25 candidates appeared for counselling for the management quota in the afternoon.

There was confusion at the counselling venue as the fee structure was not announced and students had received the call letters on the day of counselling. A candidate from Karur had received the call letter only on Thursday morning asking her to arrive at the centre by afternoon. “It takes at least four to five hours to reach Puducherry from Karur. She left Karur as soon as she received the letter,” said her uncle, on condition of anonymity.

As confusion continued at the CENTAC counselling centre over the fee structure, Health Minister Malladi Krishna Rao convened a high-level meeting with the Director (Health) and representatives of deemed universities, requesting the universities to cooperate and provide 50% seats for government quota.

Director of Health K.V. Raman said there were no clear cut judgment that allowed deemed universities to refuse 50% of the seats for government quota. “The minister has requested the deemed universities to cooperate and allow admission of candidates who have been selected through government quota,” he said.

No clarity on fees
He added that it was anticipated that Tamil Nadu would announce the fee structure. “Accordingly, we would fix the fee here,” he said.

Meanwhile, an aggrieved candidate who was refused admission in a private medical institution had filed a writ petition in Madras High Court. The court passed an interim order on Thursday directing the institution to reserve his seat until the final judgment is passed.

Speaking to The Hindu , Puducherry UT All CENTAC Students Parents Association President M.Narayanassamy said that only 76 candidates had selected seats reserved for government quota.

‘Enquiries for medicine courses abroad up’

 Must be due to anxiety over NEET: Education consultant

 Enquiries from parents and students about medicine courses in foreign countries were witnessing a sharp increase this year, said C. Ravichandran, Managing Director, Study Abroad Educational Consultants here on Thursday.

Speaking to the media regarding an upcoming education fair to be conducted here by the Cultural Department of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Chennai, Mr. Ravichandran said the spike could possibly be attributed to the anxiety surrounding the National Eligibility-cum Entrance Test (NEET) that has come into force in Tamil Nadu this year.

“We generally receive many enquiries regarding admissions around this time of the year. However, this year, we are seeing an increase of around 40 %, mostly from students in Tamil Nadu,” he said.
“Though I cannot say with certainty that it is because of NEET, it is possibly a factor since parents and students are anxious about the results and want to keep their options open,” he added. Timur Akhmetov, Vice-Dean, Foreign Students Education, Kazan State Medical University in Russia, said that around more than 2,000 students from India enrolled for medical courses in Russian universities every year, of which the majority were from southern States.

“Though opportunities are there for a variety of courses in Russia, the most popular among Indian students is medicine,” he said, adding that this year the expectation was that around 500 students will enrol for medical courses from southern States.

Stating that about 20 medical universities in Russia offered the course through English medium, Mr. Akhmetov said that Indian students were also eligible for a number of scholarships.
Mr. Ravichandran said that the education fair will be conducted at Hotel Royal Court on May 15. “All information about studying in Russia will be provided at the fair. Students can also get spot admissions by furnishing Plus Two mark sheets,” he said.

 No notification yet on MBBS, BDS

With Plus Two results being announced on Friday, there is no word yet on when the Directorate of Medical Education will issue notification for admission to undergraduate medical and dental programmes in the State.

The medical education officials maintain that they would like to finish PG counselling first before taking up UG admission. But with School Education Minister K.A. Sengottaiyan stating that the department was analysing how best to prepare students for competitive exams such as National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, it appears that admission to the MBBS and BDS courses would take into consideration NEET marks.

According to the officials of Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions 2017, the single window process for admission to engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University, 44,518 candidates registered online until Wednesday.
