Doctor, nurse, PG students attacked
A group of 40 persons allegedly attacked a doctor, two postgraduate
students and a nurse at Yenepoya Medical College and Hospital in
Deralakatte on Tuesday after the death of a 65-year-old patient.
According to the Ullal police, Bhavunni had been admitted to the hospital, with a complaint of pain in the chest and legs, on Monday afternoon.
He died due to a cardiac arrest at 11.45 p.m. in the intensive care unit.
Soon after the death, a group of 40 persons allegedly barged into the ICU unit and assaulted Assistant Professor of Yenepoya Medical College Abhijit Sudhakar Shetty and tore his T-shirt accusing him of medical negligence.
Two postgraduate students and a staff nurse, Florence, who tried to intervene, were also assaulted.
The group reportedly abducted Dr. Shetty and abandoned him near the Ullal police station.
The Ullal police registered a case and arrested three persons who were part of the group.
Police Commissioner M. Chandra Sekhar said that the police were also looking into the complaint by Bhavunni’s family members accusing the hospital staff of negligence leading to the death of Bhavunni.
