HC issues notice to CBSE on NEET

‘Exam treated unequals as equals’

The Madras High Court on Monday issued notice to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on a petition that sought cancellation of the process of selection under the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) and wanted the board to be restrained from declaring the results of the NEET conducted on May 7.
The petition was filed by Dr. Rohaiyaah Sheik Mohamed, mother of Abi Sheik Mohamed R., who took up the exam on May 7. In the petition, Ms. Rohaiyaah said the questions contained in the English version were based on CBSE syllabus while the questions in the Tamil version was based on the State board syllabus.
“In effect, the equals are treated as unequal, violating Article 14 of the Constitution which prescribes equal treatment of all the candidates on merit in the process of selection without any prejudices and concessions,” the petitioner said.
The petitioner said that there was also discrimination of candidates taking up the exam in English. “The candidates who did their higher secondary under the CBSE syllabus found the questions simple, easy and familiar as compared to the likes of the petitioner who answered the NEET in English language but had their higher secondary education under the State syllabus,” the petitioner said.
The petitioner sought a direction to cancel the NEET that was conducted on May 7.
