Third Jipmer Suicide In 8 Months
A senior resident doctor of
Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research
(Jipmer) committed suicide by administering to herself a lethal
injection at her residence in the Union territory on Monday.
Police
said 27-year-old C Reshmi, who hailed from Mysuru and had completed MBBS
and MD (anaesthesia) at Jipmer, joined as a senior resident doctor a
week ago.The doctors at the institute suspect that she might have
injected herself with a high dosage of propranolol (used to treat heart
conditions) to kill herself. “High dosage of propranolol immediately
leads to cardiac arrest,“ said a doctor, seeking anonymity.
Police said Reshmi was ying on her own after her
staying on her own after her mother C Shalini left for Mysuru three days
ago. Her mother attempted to contact her on phone on Monday but when
Reshmi did not respond, she asked her daughter's colleagues to contact
Reshmi. Police said fellow colleagues broke open the door and found the
woman unconscious on the bed.
A police team, which arrived at the spot, found an empty syringe beside her.The team also recovered a suicide note in which she said, “I don't want to live and nobody is responsible for my death.“
Police said Reshmi's mother and father S Chandran had separated several years ago, and this had affected the woman. Superintendent of police Rachna Singh said, “We suspect that she administered a lethal dose of anaesthesia. We can ascertain the nature of anaesthesia she used and its adverse effect only after a detailed chemical analysis,“ Singh said. D Nagar police have sent the body for postmortem and have registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPc.
This is the third suicide by a student or a resident doctor at Jipmer in the past eight months. A second year postgraduate nursing student at Jipmer -24-year-old N Vimala from Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh -committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling of her room at the hostel on March 30.
A 25-year-old student pursuing MD (radiotherapy), U Sumanth from Bengaluru, committed suicide by administering a lethal injection to himself inside his hostel room on the institute premises on August 27 last year.
