Two days after the Madras
high court delivered a split verdict in the postgraduate medical
admissions case, the third judge to whom it was referred to, said he
would deliver the judgment on Saturday. Justice M Sathya
narayanan said this after marathon arguments from senior counsel
representing Medical Council of India, Tamil Nadu government and
individual candidates concluded.
But, it could turn out to be a case of Hobson's choice for the third judge, as he indicated that he was not in complete agreement with either of the judges' views. The state might still be entitled to classifynotify areas as remote, difficult, hilly and rural might survive for the purpose of awarding incentive marks to in-service candidates, but it might have to be linked to their NEET-PG marks.
Earlier, MCI senior advocate Vijay Narayan argued that reserving 50% of available government quota seats was not in tune with MCI regulations, as it would directly impinge on the mandate to maintain standards.
