The Directorate of Medical Education indefinitely postponed counselling for admission to postgraduate dental courses on Wednesday after students went on a protest asking why self-financing colleges have not surrendered at least 50% of seats to the state quota.“We scheduled the counselling based on the number of seats we received from colleges. While most nonminority colleges have surrendered the required number of seats, some have not,“ selection committee secretary G Selvaraju said. “We stopped the counselling when students protested.“
“We have put out a notice and are waiting for government orders on how we sho uld proceed with the counselling,“ he said.
On Tuesday, when the government began counselling for the self-financing dental colleges affiliated to the Dr MGR Medical University, students argued that there should have been at least 180 seats from private colleges but the government put out only 108 seats on the matrix.
The DCI website shows that of the 549 MDS seats in the state 245 were from selffinancing colleges and an additional nine seats were pending approval.
Senior officials in the Directorate of Medical Education said they were in talks with the legal department to see what could be done. “We can't delay counselling indefinitely,“ an official said.
