City medico bags two gold medals in Malta
A 19-year-old student from the city won two gold medals at the world medical and health games held in Malta. Enoch Newton Joseph, pursuing an undergraduate degree in physiotherapy at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, participated in the 39th edition of the games, whose participants are athletes among medical professionals, and won the 100m and 200m sprint events. A statement said that the games were held between June 16 and 23 in the island country of Malta.
Laser run held: The city’s first laser run, a latest addition to the pentathlon games, was held on the campus of Chennai Institute of Technology, Kundrathur. More than 50 participants took part in the run which was held in several categories from under-11 age bracket to those aged more than 60 years.
5 history-sheeters held under Goondas Act: The police on Saturday arrested five history-sheeters under the Goondas Act, a police statement said. The arrested include U Viswanathan, 26, of Ambattur; N Madan, 32, of Kundrathur; M Prabhu, 30, of Thoraipakkam and S Balaji, 24, and E Sampath, 25, of Teynampet. The statement said that Viswanathan, Madan and Prabhu had over 10 chain snatching cases against them collectively at the Velachery, Valasaravakkam and MGR Nagar police stations. Balaji and Sampath have been accused in five robbery cases.
CM announces solatium for deceased cops: Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami condoled the death of 20 policemen who died across the state due to different reasons including accidents and announced a solatium of ₹3lakh from the CM public relief fund.
