Tamil Nadu: 50% AIQ medical seats vacant even after two rounds of counselling
CHENNAI: Nearly 50%of 806 undergraduate seats under the all-India quota are vacant even after two rounds of counselling. And among 412 students who have joined these courses, only around one fifth (86) are from Tamil Nadu. In the dental category, two of the 30 seats have been filled.
Admissions for AIQ seats are done by the Union government's director-general of health services (DGHS). Unlike in the past years, these seats will not be added to the state pool for the second round of counselling in the state. "Till last year, seats lying vacant after two rounds of counselling were returned to the state committees. We add the vacant seats to the state's seat matrix for the second round of counselling. By the end of the second round all government medical colleges seats will be taken," said selection committee secretary P Vasanthamani
But this year the medical counselling committee of DGHS has said it will conduct a mop-up and stray counselling rounds. "The Centre is yet to clarify on whether they will return seats that lie vacant even after the stray round for off-line or on-spot admissions," she said.
Parents and students are worried because this is likely to delay admissions. The students who did not join the course after being allotted seats in the second round must forfeit a security deposit of up to ₹10,000, according to the MMC admission bulletin.
