‘40% PG medicos don’t take precaution, risk infection’

There could be a silent epidemic of infectious diseases among postgraduate medical students in Tamil Nadu as many exposed to blood, body fluids and syringes don’t take adequate precaution to prevent infections before or after the event, a study has found.

Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital researchers surveyed 752 PG students at three medical college hospitals in Chennai, Coimbatore and Salem and found nearly 69% had been exposed to blood or body fluid splash or were stuck by a needle while on duty.

While a doctor is at risk of contracting blood-borne diseases such as hepatitis or HIV, a doctor with such infections may expose patients to a droplet of infected blood. “There is an urgent need for establishing a statewise surveillance system for monitoring of occupational exposure to achieve infection control among health care workers. These exposures can result in risk of infection and can cause serious mental ill-health,” said Dr P Praveen Kumar, a junior resident (general medicine) and author of the study. The study has been published in the Journal of Association of Physicians in India.

Just 609 students (81%) took the full course of hepatitis vaccination though the vaccine offers up to 95% protection against infectious viral disease. At least 68.35% said they were exposed to unsafe blood at least once in the last one year, taking the average incidence of occupation exposure to 1.85 per year. It was found 50% of the exposure was caused by mucocutaneous splash of blood and bodily fluids and 30% of times it was needle pricks.

What made it worse was many doctors didn’t follow standard precautions. More than two of five doctors said they did not take precautions such as wearing gloves because it was not provided, but an almost equal number did not wear them either because “they didn’t have the time,” or because they did not think it was important.

Dr Satish Kumar, who is training in general surgery, said he did not opt for medication as the side-effects could make him sick. Senior doctors said they always urged students to meet counsellors at voluntary testing centres, but the reportage is not huge.

CHENNAI: Police on Tuesday arrested a 26-year-old woman for posing as a doctor at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) in Chennai and cheating patients for over a month. The woman landed in trouble after a patient’s mother lodged a complaint that she had cheated them of `800.

According to police, B Sharmila from Tiruttani had been wandering around the hospital wearing a doctor’s coat and bearing a fake identity card. “On December 28, she demanded Rs 800 from Lakshmi, the elderly mother of a patient admitted in the hospital for treatment and disappeared. She approached Lakshmi’s son and took the money from him, claiming it was for a scan,” police said. When Lakshmi spotted the woman again in the hospital, she handed her over to the police outpost.

Questioned, Sharmila reportedly confessed that she had been wandering around the hospital for over a month. “She had married a close relative, claiming to be a doctor working at the RGGGH. He would drop her at the Tiruttani railway station every day and pick her up. She would come back around 3 pm, saying duty hours were over,” police said.

However, Sharmila did not have a previous crime record, hailing from a middle-class family. “She posed as a doctor only to cheat her husband and her family. She confessed that she had taken money from Lakshmi as she had absolutely no money with her that day. Her parents were summoned and questioned. She was remanded in the evening,” police added.

Kilpauk medical college student attempts suicide after alleged ragging on campus

Chennai: Alleged ragging by students in the Kilpauk medical college forced a girl student from Ramanathapuram to attempt to commit suicide, but timely medical intervention saved her life, police said. The survivor is a first-year nursing student at KMC.

She stays at the Women’s hostel in Kilpauk hospital campus. Sources said two girls from the same hostel allegedly offended her by taking the name of her caste. The girl alleges that constant ragging by the two students had troubled her and as she was unable to bear the torture, she decided to end her life. She allegedly consumed sleeping tablets and fell unconscious. Immediately she was taken to the hospital, after which she regained consciousness.

Her parents said that she used to complain about ragging in the hostel, but gave them the impression that she could manage it.

However, KMC Dean P. Vanitha Mani on Sunday said that the girl consumed only two tablets of Diazepam 5 mg which were prescribed for hypertension sleeping dose. After treatment, she was stable and was discharged and sent with her parents on Sunday afternoon. She feels sorry for the incident and the two girls had also pleaded guilty, she added.

Kilpauk GH to get one-stop clinic for breast screening

A one-stop clinic for breast screening will be inaugurated at the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital on January 3, health minister C Vijayabaskar said on Thursday.

A decade ago, cervical cancer was the most common cancer in women, but in 2001, breast cancer took over. “It made mass screening expensive and complex. But if they are diagnosed and treated early, we will not only be able to save women, but also be able to help them preserve the breasts,” he said after inaugurating an awareness programme to stop using disposable plastics. He visited the “pink” clinic, set up at a cost of ₹4 crore, along with environment minister K C Karuppannan.

The clinic is equipped with state-of-the-art machines such as a 3D digital mammogram for screening and diagnosing lesions that are as small as 4mm. “We will be able to pick up lesions at a very early stage. The clinic is set up in such a way that women find it easy and pleasant to access,” said KMC dean Dr Vasanthamani P.

Even though cancer incidence in women is lower in India than in the most developed countries, the estimated annual incidence of per 1,00,000 population is higher among women (82) when compared to men (63). Cancer of breast, cervix and ovary constitutes nearly 55% of all cancer in women.

The clinic, she said, will diagnose free and women will be referred to the oncology department at the Government Royapettah Hospital for tertiary care. Women who need breast reconstruction or implants can visit the plastic surgery department at Stanley Medical College and Hospital, she said.

நாமக்கல் மாவட்டம் புதுச்சத்திரம் அருகே உள்ள கல்யாணி கிராமம் பகுதியை சேர்ந்தவர் சின்ராஜ் (வயது 31). இவர் அங்கு உள்ள ஒரு தனியார் நிறுவனத்தில் வேலை பார்த்து வருகிறார். இவரது மனைவி மைதிலி. இவர்களது 2-வது மகள் ஷார்மி (4). நேற்று முன்தினம் மாலை இந்த சிறுமி வீட்டின் வெளியில் விளையாடி கொண்டிருந்தாள்.

அப்போது பக்கத்து வீட்டில் வசிக்கும் ஒருவர் வளர்த்து வரும் நாய் திடீரென்று சிறுமி மீது பாய்ந்து அவளது கன்னத்தை கடித்து குதறியது. இதில் சிறுமி பலத்த காயம் அடைந்து வலி தாங்க முடியாமல் கதறி அழுதாள். இந்த நிலையில் சிறுமியின் கன்னத்தில் இருந்து ரத்தம் வெளியேறியது. இதை பார்த்த பெற்றோர் பதறி துடித்தனர்.

பின்னர் மகளை மீட்டு சேலம் அரசு ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் சிகிச்சைக்காக சேர்த்தனர். டாக்டர்கள் சிறுமி ஷார்மியின் கன்னத்தில் 2 மணி நேரம் அறுவை சிகிச்சை செய்தனர். தொடர்ந்து சிறுமிக்கு தீவிர சிகிச்சை அளித்து வருகின்றனர்.

இது குறித்து சேலம் அரசு ஆஸ்பத்திரி டீன் ராஜேந்திரனிடம் கேட்ட போது, நாய் கடித்ததில் சிறுமியின் கன்னத்தில் இருந்து சிறிதளவு சதை பிய்ந்தது. மேலும் நாயின் எச்சில் சிறுமியின் கன்னத்தில் அதிகம் பட்டு இருந்தது. இதைத்தொடர்ந்து முதலில் நாயின் எச்சில் முழுமையாக சுத்தம் செய்யப்பட்டது. பின்னர் பாதுகாப்பான முறையில் சிறுமிக்கு 2 மணி நேரம் அறுவை சிகிச்சை செய்யப்பட்டது. கன்னத்தில் 25 தையல்கள் போடப்பட்டு உள்ளன. தற்போது சிறுமிக்கு மேலும் சிகிச்சை அளித்து வருகிறோம் என்று கூறினார்.

Anaesthesia blunder: Woman in coma for 9 yrs

Shraddha Shah was nursing dreams of motherhood when she was wheeled into the operation theatre for a caesarean section in 2009. She came out in a comatose state, never able to nurse her son and caress her elder daughter.

Nine years later, the Odhav resident lies confined in bed, paralyzed. Never able to come out of the anaesthesia dose, Shraddha’s crippled limbs twist out of exhaustion as her brother feeds her. Her incomprehensible blabber can only be decoded by her caretakers. Gujarat state consumer dispute redressal commission on December 19 acknowledged this life interrupted and fined gynaecologist Dr Nilesh Trivedi and anaesthetist Dr Himanshu Patel ₹32 lakh for their “negligence” and “commercialization of profession” due to which Shraddha became a cripple after incomplete reversal from anaesthesia administered during surgery during child birth.

Shraddha, now 41, has been in a vegetative condition since the surgery. Her brother Kalpesh Shah and mother take care of her while her children live with their father in Mumbai. Shraddha had consulted Dr Trivedi when she was pregnant with her second child in November 2009. The doctor advised a caesarean section and performed the surgery. A baby boy was born, but she never came out of the anaesthesia effect. The incomplete reversal from anaesthesia damaged her brain and she also suffered a cardiac arrest. She was rushed to other hospitals as Dr Trivedi’s hospital lacked intensive care facilities.

When doctors in Ahmedabad and Mumbai concluded that Shraddha, then only 32 years of age, would never recover and remain paralyzed for the rest of her life, an anguished family sued both doctors for deficiency in service. The doctors denied any negligence and deficiency in service, but the court questioned why they decided to perform C-section surgery and the anaesthetist had to administer general anaesthesia after first trying to administer spinal anaesthesia.

“No modern techniques were applied, even ventilator facility was not available… Both doctors failed to take reasonable care and caution before and after the operation. They failed to take effective steps to see that the patient comes back to consciousness after anaesthesia. Oxygen levels were also not properly monitored,” the court observed.

Man recites prayers for 3 hours as doctors operate on his brain

It’s usually relatives who recite religious verses when a patient goes under the knife, but at a private hospital in Jaipur, it was the patient himself who recited the Hanuman Chalisa for three hours while doctors removed a tumour from his brain.

A 30-year-old accountant from Dungargarh of Bikaner district hesitated when doctors told him they’d conduct brain surgery under local anaesthesia, but agreed when they explained that it was the only way they could ensure that his speech would be unaffected.

“He had a tumour in the part of brain that controls speech. We decided to keep him awake and talk to him during surgery to ensure that his ability to speak was not affected. If we noticed even a minor change in his speech during surgery, we would have taken corrective measures. He recited the Hamuman Chalisa all the time, and we operated successfully,” said Dr KK Bansal, senior consultant of neurosurgery at a private hospital.

The surgery was conducted on November 14, but doctors disclosed details of the procedure only a month later after ascertaining that the tumour had been removed and there were no side-effects. Doctors said the man had epileptic seizures for three months. They did a biopsy and diagnosed a grade two brain tumour. Doctors in Jaipur agreed to perform the surgery, known as awake craniotomy.

Last year, a man in Bengaluru who’d lost the use of three fingers played the guitar while undergoing brain surgery to correct the problem. Neurosurgeons conduct awake craniotomy to reach tumours located close to areas of the brain that control vision, speech and movement. Monitoring response in conventional brain surgery is not possible as the patient is sedated, but in awake brain surgery, the patient’s response can be tracked continuously, which helps the surgeon ascertain the exact spot without damaging other areas of the brain.

‘National Medical Council Bill will get lapsed’

Ravi Wankhedkar, national president of Indian Medical Association (IMA), has asserted that the ‘controversial’ National Medical Council (NMC) bill, introduced in Parliament at the beginning of the ongoing winter session, will lapse as it would not be tabled for discussion.

Addressing on ‘Current problems faced by doctors,’ the Bill and Clinical Establishment Act (CEA)’ at the district branch of IMA here on Tuesday, he said the Centre had introduced the Bill, seeking to replace the Medical Council of India (MCI), underestimating the strength of doctor fraternity and after doctors, across the country, demonstrated their strength and unity, the government took a reverse.

It’s three weeks since the Bill was introduced in the ongoing final winter session of Parliament and it had not been tabled for discussion so far. As the Bill would never be tabled in the coming week also, it would automatically lapse, he said amid cheers by medical practitioners.

Pointing that the Bill was not tabled for discussion in the last five Parliamentary sessions, he said “In the current political scenario, I do not think the government will dare to table it for discussion.”

When the term of the Lok Sabha gets over, the Bill would also get lapsed and that would be the greatest victory of doctor fraternity, he said. Dr. Wankhedkar said the government tried to underestimate the strength of the doctors but changed its mind after the nation-wide January 2 strike. Claiming that the strike shook the government, he said if the doctor fraternity remained united, no government could impose rules on them.

Doctors in Maharashtra, Uttarkhand and Haryana had successfully prevented the implementation of CEA, thanks to their unity, he said.

Stating that the medical fraternity was attacked from all sides – the media, law-makers and opinion-makers, he said the healthcare industry was facing a dangerous situation and doctors were not sure that a person who stepped into a clinic or hospital would slap or sue them.

The bureaucrats should not try to implement rules sitting in air-conditioned rooms. On the other hand, they should sea the ground situation and ensure doctors best served the patients. Lack of specialist doctors is a major concern, says Vinod K. Paul

A lot of hard work is being made to increase the number of medical seats in the coming years, Dr. Vinod K. Paul, Chairman, Board of Governors, Medical Council of India and NITI Aayog member, said.

“The assessment for the number of seats in academic year 2019-20 is still going on. ICU beds are currently not counted for medical seats. Every speciality has ICU, which can be converted into medical seats. This is under consideration, but nothing official yet,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a conclave of State Health Sciences Universities.

The road ahead

The theme of the conclave was ‘Enhancing Excellence in Health Medical Education: journey so far and the road ahead’, organised by the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai, in partnership with NITI Aayog. Dr. Paul said one of the major concerns was lack of availability of specialist doctors. “While the country has done well in terms of penetration of generic medical colleges, we need to increase the number of specialist medical colleges,” he said.

He hailed Tamil Nadu for the progress it has made in the healthcare sector and said that the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme of the State, has been used as a role model in designing the Ayushman Bharat programme.

He also said that revised National Medical Commission Bill has tried to address the concerns of States and other stakeholders and it is up to the Parliament to consider and pass it.

More medical colleges

Delivering his inaugural address at the conclave, Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar said Tamil Nadu had the largest number of Government Medical Colleges (22 colleges with 2,900 MBBS seats).

Five new collegeshave been established in the last six years and MBBS seats have been increased by 1,000. “A new Government Medical College at Karur with an annual intake of 150 students at a cost of Rs. 229.46 crore is taking shape. Steps are being taken to add 345 MBBS seats in four government colleges,” the minister said.

The government was committed to starting medical colleges in all the districts in a phased manner, he added.

Cabinet approves establishment of two new AIIMS at Tamil Nadu & Telangana under Pradhan MantriSwasthya Suraksha Yojana

          The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today has approved establishment of two new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Madurai, Tamil Nadu at a cost of Rs 1,264 crore and Bibinagar, Telangana at a cost of Rs 1,028 crore.  The AIIMS will be set up under Pradhan MantriSwasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).

The Union Cabinet has also given its approval for creation of one post of Director in the basic pay of Rs 2,25,000/- (fixed) plus NPA (however pay + NPA would not exceed Rs 2,37,500/-) for each of the above two AIIMS.

Benefits:

•   Each new AIIMS will add 100 UG (MBBS) seats and 60 B.Sc. (Nursing) seats.

•   Each new AIIMS will have 15-20 Super Specialty Departments.

•   Each new AIIMS will add around 750 hospital beds.

•  As per data of current functional AIIMS, it is expected that each new AIIMS would cater to around 1500 Outdoor patients per day and around 1000 Indoor patients per month.

Details of project:    

Establishment of new AIIMS involves creation of Hospital, Teaching Block for medical & nursing courses, residential complex and allied facilities/services, broadly on the pattern of AIIMS, New Delhi and other six new AIIMS taken up under Phase-I of PMSSY. The objective is to establish the new AIIMS as Institutions of National Importance for providing quality tertiary healthcare, medical education, nursing education and research in the Region.

The proposed institution shall have a hospital with capacity of 750 beds which will include Emergency / Trauma Beds, AYUSH Beds, Private Beds and ICU Speciality and Super Speciality beds. In addition, there will be a Medical College, AYUSH Block, Auditorium, Night Shelter, Guest House, Hostels and residential facilities. The establishment of the new AIIMS will create capital assets for which requisite specialized manpower will be created, based on the pattern of the six new AIIMS, for their maintenance and upkeep. The recurring cost on these Institutions shall be met through Grant-in-Aid to them from Plan Budget Head of PMSSY of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The timeframe for establishment of the new AIIMS Tamil Nadu and AIIMS Telangana will be 45 months, broadly comprising a pre-construction phase of 10 months, a construction phase of 32 months and stabilization/commissioning phase of 3 months.Cost of construction and running of the new AIIMS would be met by the Central Government under PMSSY.

Impact:

Setting up of new AIIMS would not only transform health education and training but also address the shortfall of health care professionals in the region. The establishment of new AIIMS will serve the dual purpose of providing super speciality health care to the population while also help create a large pool of doctors and other health workers in this region that can be available for primary and secondary level institutions / facilities being created under National Health Mission (NHM). Construction of new AIIMS is fully funded by the Central Government. The Operations & Maintenance expenses on new AIIMS are also fully borne by the Central Government.

Employment Generation:     

Setting up new AIIMS in the states will lead to employment generation for nearly 3000 people in various faculty & non faculty posts in each of the AIIMS. Further, indirect employment generation will take place due to facilities & services like shopping centre, canteens, etc. coming in the vicinity of new AIIMS.

The construction activity involved for creation of the physical infrastructure for the various new AIIMS is also expected to generate substantial employment in the construction phase as well.

Background:

The Pradhan MantriSwasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), a Central Sector Scheme, aims at correcting the imbalances in the availability of affordable tertiary healthcare facilities in different parts of the country in general, and augmenting facilities for quality medical education in the under-served States in particular.

The AIIMS in Tamil Nadu was announced in the Budget Speech of  Finance Minister in 2015-16 and Ministry of Finance conveyed its in-principle approval for establishment of AIIMS in Telangana in April, 2018.

சென்னை ராஜீவ்காந்தி அரசு பொது மருத்துவமனையில் நேற்று அந்த மருத்துவமனையின் ‘டீன்’ டாக்டர் ஜெயந்தி நிருபர்களுக்கு பேட்டியளித்தார். அப்போது அவர் கூறியதாவது:-

ராஜீவ்காந்தி பொது மருத்துவமனையில் 62 கண்காணிப்பு கேமராக்கள் பொருத்தப்பட்டு செயல்பட்டு வருகிறது. இந்த நிலையில் தற்போது ராஜீவ்காந்தி அரசு பொது மருத்துவமனையில் லஞ்சம், ஊழல் மற்றும் திருட்டு சம்பவங்களை தடுக்கும் வகையில் கூடுதலாக 125 நவீன கண்காணிப்பு கேமராக்கள் பொருத்தப்பட்டுள்ளன. இதன் மூலம் மருத்துவமனை வளாகம் முழுவதும் கண்காணிப்பில் இருக்கும்.

21 கேமராக்கள் மருத்துவமனை வெளி வளாகத்திலும், 104 கேமராக்கள் மருத்துவமனை கட்டிடங்களிலும் வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. வெளி வளாகத்தில் பொருத்தப்பட்டுள்ள கேமராக்கள் 280 மீட்டர் வரை பார்க்கக்கூடிய திறன் உடையதாகும். இந்த கண்காணிப்பு கேமராக்கள் இரவு நேரங்களிலும் தெளிவாக படம் பிடிக்கும் வசதிகள் கொண்ட நவீன வகை கேமராக்கள் ஆகும்.

புதிய குழு

ராஜீவ்காந்தி அரசு பொது மருத்துவமனையில் லஞ்சம் மற்றும் ஊழலை தடுக்கும் வகையில் தினமும் 2 பேராசிரியர்கள் கொண்ட குழு அமைக்கப்பட உள்ளது. இந்த குழு தினமும் மருத்துவமனையின் அனைத்து வார்டுகளையும் ஆய்வு மேற்கொண்டு அவர்களது அறிக்கையை கொடுக்கும். அந்த அறிக்கையின் அடிப்படையில் தக்க நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்படும்.

தனியார் ஒப்பந்த ஊழியர்கள் மீது கொடுக்கப்பட்ட புகார்களின் அடிப்படையில் 5 பேர் மீது நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. மேலும் ராஜீவ்காந்தி அரசு பொது மருத்துவமனையில் கடந்த சில நாட்களுக்கு முன்பு லஞ்ச ஒழிப்பு அதிகாரிகள் ஆய்வு மேற்கொண்டனர். லஞ்ச ஒழிப்பு அதிகாரிகளிடம் இருந்து உரிய அறிக்கை வந்தவுடன், அந்த அறிக்கையின் பேரில் ஊழியர்கள் மீது தக்க நடவடிக்கை எடுக்கப்படும்.

Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has joined the hundreds of admirers who paid homage to the people’s doctor Dr S Jayachndran. The ‘Rs 5 Doctor’ passed away on Thursday after suffering from a brief illness. “Chennai based Dr S Jayachandran is a hero. His was a life purely for the betterment of others,” wrote PM Modi on Twittter.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami also mourned the demise of Dr Jayachandran saying “I am deeply saddened by the news of the death of ‘` 5 doctor’ Dr Jayachandran.”

Mentioning his contribution towards the welfare of society, CM Palaniswami wrote on twitter, “He had been serving the poor section of the society since 1971 in Ramapuram and was charging only ` 2 earlier for medical care. It is an immense loss to the society. I extend my deepest condolences to his family and the people of Ramapuram.”

The ‘Makkal Maruthuvar’ Dr S Jayachandran believed in a completely non-commercialised medical care system and served the people of Chennai for 44 years. He started his clinic at his home at Venkatachalam street in Old Washermanpet in 1971 without taking financial help from anyone. In those days, he used to charge only 25 paise. He later shifted the clinic to Kasimedu.

An alumnus of Madras Medical College, Dr Jayachandran would treat patients for free, and if the patient willingly offers him money he would take a token amount of `5. Some of his patients recall that he would help elderly patients with mode of transportation if they were injured and could not afford auto-rickshaws.

While economically weak people saw him as a Messiah, he also had a queue of wealthy patients who would offer to pay him more than his fixed amount of ` 5. Dr Jayachandran insisted on accepting the fee in the form of medicines that he would give to those who couldn’t afford it.

Dr Jayachandran leaves behind a wife, who is also a doctor, and three children. His compassionate attitude towards patients coming from all sections of the society is an example of selfless service for the medical profession.

Family doctor, now only memory of past

The likes of Dr Jayachandran are a rarity now, in the current scenario of commercial healthcare sector and corporate medical treatments. Most households complain that the physicians have lost the humane attitude that used to be there with the family doctors earlier.

“Physicians no longer smile, no longer enquire about the wellbeing of the family, no longer recall the past ailments,” says 89-year-old S Srinivasan. “They are only interested in referrals to super-specialists, unnecessary scans and screening tests, and are very indifferent, shrugging off when the worst happens to the patient, while all the time they are obsessed with billing,” he adds.

Traditionally, the doctors to whom families visited regularly in case of any ailments irrespective of his/her specialisation were called “family doctors”. They would give primary treatment and based on the condition he/she referred the patient to a specialist for further care. Family medicine now stops at the consultant who makes the diagnosis.

“The history of medical treatments of all the members of the family used to be recorded in the mind of family doctors. We now visit doctors with a bundle of medical records and then it goes ahead with further referrals and screening tests that might be even unnecessary,” said 80-year-old G Poorna, a resident of Adyar.

General physician Dr S Vijayaraghavan says, “The approach of doctors towards the patients is more of a disease-centric than pro-active patient centric attitude. There has been a complete shift in the way medical care is being offered in the current scenario than a few decades back. While the advancement of technologies has helped in the treatment of emergency cases, allopathic treatment for the management of chronic diseases has been taken completely in the wrong way.”

“Chronic diseases are mainly the symptoms due to fault in the lifestyle and diseases like diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol, stress and depression and they need not be dealt with medicines only, but lifestyle modifications,” he adds.

Though the advancement in the healthcare sector has helped to come up with remedies for various ailments, the confidence that patients had in medical profession and doctors has deteriorated over the course of time.

Vedic researcher S Ramachandran says that pharmaceutical companies are funding the medical researches and that has created the disease-centric set up in medical field. “A patient gets brainwashed to undergo numerous tests and corporate hospitals hardly reveal the details of treatment being provided to the patient on a regular basis. The medical research is attracting revenue with the growth of medical industry and pharma groups.”

As the advancements in healthcare has changed the face of medical sector to corporate sector, medical practitioners are of the opinion that medical profession cannot be practised in the same way as it used to be 25 years back and technological advances are a necessity.

However, people are aware of the commercialisation of the medical set up and they seek treatments in corporate hospitals,” said Dr Cherian.

Chennai: A rare open-heart surgery was performed for a lowest weight pre-term child diagnosed with fungal endocarditis at Institute of Child Health recently.

Jayanthi from Mundiambakkkam was admitted in the hospital on the August 24 and her baby was diagnosed with Fungal Endocarditis. The pre-term baby weighing 1.72 kilograms had a fungal mass in tricuspid valve. Despite being treated with antibiotics and antifungal drugs for more than a month, the medicines did not respond and no resolution of the fungal mass could be sought.

Hence the preterm baby was taken for an open-heart surgery on November 26 and was successfully operated and external tubes were removed postoperatively on December 1. The patient has recovered very well and is now fit for discharge on the December 21.

“This is a rare occurrence in premature infants with more than 50 percent mortality in not operated patients and more than 80 percent mortality in operated patients. This patient is the lowest weight pre-term baby operated for open heart surgery in Tamil Nadu at the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme,” said Dr G K Jaikaran, head, paediatric cardiothoracic surgery department.

Here’s everything you should know about him:

He began his practice in the 1970s, in North Chennai’s Old Washermanpet, after which he moved to Kasimedu.

He charged only 25 paise in his initial years of practice. One of his patients, K Rajeshwari, said, "I knew him for the last 40 years. He is our family doctor. At a time medical service has turned into a business for many doctors, he looked at it as a humanitarian service," she said.

His aim was to serve the people. Since people from North Chennai are from economically weaker sections of society, he wanted to help them.

According to media reports, he also helped patients by providing auto fare for the elderly after they visit him.

He made himself available for patients even at 1 am, even gave money to patients and sometimes also offered them food.

If some of his patients could not afford the consultation fee, he would treat them for free.

Despite help from various trusts for donations, he refused and instead insisted that they buy medicines and donate so that he could treat his patients free of cost.

He also referred his patients to scan centres so they would get concessions.

He was also nominated by friends and well-wishers for Padma Shri award in 2016 on the grounds of humanitarian service, his friend N Raman, former director of Botany Department, University of Madras said. "He deserved the award, but he didn't receive it," said Raman.

He did not, however, pay much attention to his own health! He never slept or ate on time, one of his patients, Om Prakash said. "When I was young, I have seen him going around narrow streets of North Chennai on a bicycle to treat patients,” he added.

He is survived by his wife Dr Veni Jayachandran, two sons and a daughter, all doctors by profession.
