Join the initiative to red-flag fake news, vaccinate people with truth

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

05.01.2022

Exclusive liquor bars opened for women by the Tamil Nadu government”. This was among thousands of forwarded messages ranging from “Hot coconut water kills all types of cancer cells, cysts and tumors” to “Karnataka police have added location trackers for all auto rickshaws for women safety” that TOI busted as fake recently through its campaign ‘Times Verified’.

Born in Mumbai in April last year, the initiative that aims to break the chain of viral misinformation and disinformation which has been infecting social media groups in the backdrop of a mutating virus, went national in December 2021.

Under this campaign, readers send unverified or suspicious messages doing the rounds of social media to this paper on the WhatsApp number 9819888887 and our expert panel—comprising reporters, editors and representatives from the BMC and government—tap into their sources to verify its credibility.

Over the last few weeks, TOI received over 15,000 messages of which 45% emerged as falsehoods. “This message is fake,” cried the bold red stamp sent by our panel in response to the dubious messages including the recent: “Indian student home remedy for Covid 19 approved by WHO. Concoction of pepper, honey & ginger juice can eli- minate the effects of Covid in 5days. ”

In an email interview, US based physician Dr Seema Yasmin—whose recent book speaks about how misinformation spreads faster than microbes in times of crisis—had told TOI that the rapid spread of false information during a pandemic can cost people their lives. In this scenario, the job of our “chain-breakers”—readers who have been regularly forwarding dubious messages to help TOI identify red flags and vaccinate you with the truth—becomes especially significant.

Among these vigilant chain breakers are Delhi’s Meenakshi Kaul who recently helped us bust this message “Japan has dropped its COVID-19 vaccination rollout and has opted to use the drug Ivermectin and by doing so, Japan has ended COVID-19 ‘almost overnight’” and Maharashtra’s Pavan Agarwal who brought to our notice a dubious 1957 comic strip featuring Phantom warning people of “China virus”.

If Karnataka’s Loganat- han P alerted us to the fake “Calls from ‘912250041117’ for vaccine feedback, on answering the call, the phone will be hacked”, UP’s Ravinder Raina promptly helped us call out this falsehood: “Indian Army Soldiers fainted after running due to Covid vaccination”.

The rumours weren’t only about the virus. For instance, Punjab’s Nausheen B sent us this dubious forward: “Professor Neena Gupta, a mathematician from Kolkata, declared as the first Indian to win Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians. ”

To join the chain-breaking brigade in the fight against false news, all you have to do is send dubious, anxiety-causing news circulated on social media to our expert panel and let the green tick in the Times Verified logo counter the tyranny of the grey curved arrow of forwards.

Break the chain of fake news, try Times Verified

Break the chain of fake news, try Times Verified

Social media, which connects and catalyses change, can also be a minefield of fake news and falsehoods. A steady, constant stream of misinformation is spread through platforms and networks that link families, friends and associates. The undercurrent of anxiety and panic is palpable.

As changing dynamics pit media against emerging forms of communication, TOI has tried to meet the challenge by putting even greater emphasis on news verification. We don’t claim to have all the answers, but we do have rigorous systems in place to check information before we publish it. In case an error still slips through, we acknowledge it and are quick to set the record straight.

In keeping with the same spirit, Times Verified seeks to provide clarity and accuracy on vital issues through a collaborative effort with readers. We see this as a service that we wish to provide to our readers with a sense of utmost humility and responsibility. We will not declare that something is true or fake unless we are fully satisfied with our due diligence. And if we are not in a position to reach a definitive conclusion, we will not shy away from saying so.

Since beginning a trial run in some cities a few months ago, we have scrutinised close to 25,000 messages sent by our readers on a dedicated line. They ranged from forwards about the demise of a decorated war veteran, to a cell phone number for sourcing drugs for Covid patients, and a purported announcement on another impending lockdown.

Our panel, comprising editors and reporters who cover various agencies and sectors, submitted the data, reports, statements and other details that came in for corroboration to experts and relevant authorities. Their inputs helped us get back to the reader with as clear a picture as possible.

Some of the messages analysed were downright absurd—“all citizens are entitled to Rs 7,000 per week to stay at home to combat the virus”—but there were several that seemed to carry a ring of authenticity, providing information on apps offering vaccination slots or quoting statements attributed to people in important positions (“Mike Yeadon, former chief scientist at Pfizer, declares vaccine a threat to human life”).

This is clearly the more insidious side of social media; half-truths dressed up to appear real. The challenge is to analyse such viral fakes and separate fact from fabrication. This is important because fake news can quite literally be lethal.

“The rapid spread of false information during a pandemic can cost people their lives,” says US-based physician Dr Seema Yasmin, whose recent book speaks about how misinformation spreads faster than microbes in times of crisis. “In the last year we’ve seen people write Facebook posts from their hospital beds saying they didn’t believe the pandemic was real because of what they’d read on social media and now they were infected,” adds Yasmin, stressing on the need to identify red flags in information packaged to be “very certain”.

With truth being the best, most effective vaccination to counter the epidemic of fake news, we urge you to forward all dubious, anxiety-causing messages to our expert panel. Let the green tick in the Times Verified logo counter the tyranny of the grey curved arrow of forwards.

For generations, HMT was the nation’s timekeeper

INSTITUTIONS THAT SHAPED INDIA

For generations, HMT was the nation’s timekeeper

The PSU Made India’s First Wristwatch In 1961 And Was The Unchallenged Leader Until It Lost Touch With The Market After Liberalisation

Chethan.Kumar@timesgroup.com

19.12.2021

In 1977, more than 15 years after India produced its first wristwatch, an advertisement from the manufacturer read: “We’ve built it so that it will still be around, ticking away faithfully, years and years from now.” That company has sold more than 11 crore pieces so far and most of them are still ticking away faithfully, even as it itself survives on borrowed time.

The story of HMT begins in an age when watches were earned, not bought on a whim. They were prized possessions. Some got theirs for clearing a board exam, others inherited them as family heirlooms. Anecdotally, HMT watches were the sine qua non for grooms at weddings.

As India celebrates 75 years of Independence, the grains of sand in her hourglass tell the story of HMT Watches — once the timekeeper to the nation — ushered in by the first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

“HMT made watches for every occasion, every mood and every generation. From simple hand-wound mechanical watches to elegant, sophisticated quartz watches — analog and digital,” the company proudly proclaims.

HMT’s journey is punctuated with various firsts, including India’s first Braille watch and a watch designed specially for nurses. It was the first PSU to make a product directly for the consumer, and the first to set up a unit in J&K — HMT Chinar Watches was established in 1970. HMT factories also hired women in large numbers in the 1960s when women workers were largely restricted to the front office. More than 1,200 women worked in its factories at its peak, when there were 14 satellite assembly units.

“While most of our assembly employees were women, we also had an exclusive all-women unit in Peenya (Bengaluru). This was because women were more dexterous and efficient than men in handling the parts,” BG Dwarkanath, an old-timer who moved to Titan, says.

Dawn of an era

Having started in a small way in 1953 at Bengaluru, the parent PSU, Hindustan Machine Tools, grew to have 29 units across India at its peak, with a sales and service network covering almost every district headquarters. Its first attempt at diversification gave birth to HMT Watches in 1961. Janata, the first indigenous wristwatch, came soon after, followed by Jawahar, and HMT didn’t look back for more than two decades.

The first watch factory in Bengaluru — set up on 112 acres in collaboration with Japan’s Citizen Watch Co — had an initial capacity of 3.6 lakh watches a year. But at its peak, HMT’s annual installed capacity was 60 lakh pieces.

Customers lined up outside its showrooms daily to get a watch. HRV Raja, the company’s GM (operations), says, “HMT has made 1,991 formally categorised models. If you count the variants of these, where only the dial or something was changed, there would be more than 3,500.” Since 1961, more than 11.2 crore pieces of HMT watches have been sold.

Bhaskar Bhat, former MD of watch market leader Titan, says HMT made extremely good watches in terms of quality, and excellence in manufacturing was established very early. “It attracted some of the best engineering talent at the time. That it had a lot of demand saw it thrive, making HMT Watches, at its peak, the most profitable division of the PSU. It propped up the rest of the divisions.”

Yajnanarayana Kammaje, described by Bhat as the ‘pioneer of quartz technology’ in India, recollects how IK Amita, the “father of Indian watches,” brought him in exclusively for quartz when HMT was already the king of mechanical watches with several popular models like Pilot, Jawan, Kohinoor, Nutan and Sujata.

“We got the technology from Citizen for a mere $250 million. In about three years of introducing (1980-81) quartz, we were making around 2 lakh quartz watches a year and our division at Lavelle Road (Bengaluru) made a profit of Rs 10 crore, which was a lot at the time,” Kammaje said.

Winding down

So what went wrong? According to Kammaje, the PSU failed to leverage quartz technology and didn’t understand the new customer needs. Bhat agrees: “While people did queue up, given the kind of economy that India had then, there was not much of marketing or customer studies, and HMT was not customer-oriented, which became a major flaw.”

Kammaje noted the decision to make mechanical watches at Ranibagh with an investment of about Rs 30-40 crore was a mistake. “A Union minister was adamant about having a mechanical factory while quartz was the future. Also, what HMT failed to do was realise that from mere timekeepers, watches had become fashion accessories, something Titan leveraged very well.”

Dwarkanath, who led the team that trained in Japan for quartz, says HMT was a fantastic brand with potential to be among the best in the world, “But we failed to keep up with the times.”

“When there’s very little scope to take risks and change is stonewalled, growth becomes a casualty. That’s what happened with us. Everything I learnt about watches was at HMT, but I saw the watch market grow as part of Titan.”

On borrowed time

While all HMT watch factories shut in 2016 as part of the Centre’s restructuring plans for the PSU as a whole, watchmaking hasn’t stopped. However, it is running on borrowed time.

P Jayapalan, who’s been with HMT for 35 years and oversees its museum and heritage centre, says, “While closing, there was a lot of inventory and a renewed demand, mostly from people nostalgic about our brand. So we’ve been using the inventory to assemble watches we sell online and at dedicated outlets.”

Raja added the mother unit in Bengaluru can make around 20,000 watches a year with the inventory, mostly against orders. “Around 60% of them are mechanical.”

Most insiders say watchmaking will stop completely when the parts are exhausted, but Raja says, “Given our brand’s popularity, we may even sustain this. The nature of operations would change, but we may continue to make watches even after the present inventory is over.”

₹2,000 Covid relief to be distributed from May 15

₹2,000 Covid relief to be distributed from May 15

Shanmughasundaram.J@timesgroup.com

Chennai:09.05.2021

The Tamil Nadu government will start distribution of ₹2,000 as the first instalment of Covid-19 relief to ration cardholders on May 15. To facilitate cash distribution, the government will first distribute tokens to 2.07 crore ration cardholders starting from May 10.

After assuming charge as the chief minister of the state, M K Stalin had issued an order to give Covid financial aid to ration cardholders. He had also slashed Aavin milk price by ₹3 per litre and announced free travel for women in town and city buses.

As regards distribution of financial aid, the salesmen and helpers at ration shops would first distribute the tokens at the cardholders’ doorstep. It would commence on Monday and would be completed in three days. “We will distribute the financial aid from May 15. A total of 2.07 crore families will benefit,” commissioner of Tamil Nadu civil supplies corporation limited Sajjan Singh R Chavan told TOI.

The authorities are taking efforts to disburse the aid in a seamless manner and avoid gathering of cardholders at the ration shops. The tokens have been printed. Details such as ration shop number, name of the cardholder, name of village/street, date and time of distribution will have to be filled in. “The cardholders will be told to visit the shop to collect the cash at the given date and time. Crowding will be avoided. We have instructed the staff at each shop to follow safety measures and maintain social distancing while distributing money,” Chavan added.

Chief minister M K Stalin, in a video message on Saturday, said the ₹2,000 would be the first instalment of the ₹4,000 Covid aid promised by his party before the polls. It would be helpful to the people when the state is going for 14 days lockdown from May 10.

Workers will distribute tokens to eligible ration card holders from Monday and date, time to receive cash will be sent to the beneficiaries to avoid crowding

Break the chain of viral fake news, TOI shows you how

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

17.04.2021

Recently, before Maharashtra went under partial lockdown, a picture of a cop sporting a coronavirusshaped helmet went viral. In the photograph, three men on a bike are seen ducking from the men in khakhi and the headline suggested that the state was about to go into complete lockdown from April 9 to 19.

In the heat of the second wave of the pandemic, misinformation around Covid-19 has been spreading almost as fast as the deadly virus. If you too have contracted anxiety or vaccine hesitancy from consuming the constant avalanche of unverified news that has been tearing through family social media groups, worry not. TOI is here to help break the chain of fake news.

Starting today, Times Verified—an initiative by the Times of India—will debunk falsehoods circulating on social media. All you have to do is save the WhatsApp number 9819432222 on your phone as “Times Verified” and share unverified or suspicious messages that ambush your social media messengers with us here. As soon as we receive your message, our newly-formed expert panel comprising reporters, editors and representatives from the BMC and the government will get cracking. The panel will contact the relevant authorities and sources to check the credibility of the news story and get back to you with a clear picture as soon as possible.

So, whether it is a dubious article about a man who has found a cure for Covid-19 or about a senior citizen who has developed severe complications after the second dose, make sure to send it to us for verification first before allowing it to shape your decisions and discussions. And let our experts fight the contagion of panic caused by falsehoods—both innocent and wilful—by vaccinating you with the truth.

My son-in-law has purchased an old house in Chennai. Since it was a minor property, the vendor had obtained a clearance certificate from civil court.

Published: 08th September 2020 06:36 AM

Express News Service

CHENNAI: My son-in-law has purchased an old house in Chennai. Since it was a minor property, the vendor had obtained a clearance certificate from civil court. According to the instructions given by the court, we purchased a DD against consideration of said property to get it registered. Following that, he applied patta and it was issued. After some weeks, my son-in-law applied for the name transfer of property tax card along with required documents at RO department, Vadapalani. They accepted his application but did not give a property tax card stating the city civil court has to be authenticated. Would the court give such a letter/authentication to RO department?

— TM Raju

Apply for a certificate of funds from the registrar, city civil court and give it to your Revenue Officer. Logic may not work with the officials of the government. This is a very simple procedure.

We have a property, which has a passage in the front, which is under easement (since the late 1950s) from the building in front as that is the only access we have to the road. The owners of the property in front constructed a demarcating wall separating their property from the easement land with a gate towards the passage for vastu compliance, which was kept permanently locked. Our property had uninterrupted access to the road since then till about mid 2000s, when the owners of the property started parking two-wheelers in the passage blocking access and started opening the gate and using the passage too although they had direct access to the road. Now they say that since they are the owners they have absolute right and we have the right only to use the passage and can’t protest their blocking/use of the already narrow passage for vehicle parking/repair. Do the owners of the land on which we have easement have the right to use the property (including parking of vehicles)?

— VaikunthaNathan

A property has to be used for the purpose for which it was intended to be used. If it is a passage, parking of vehicles obstructing the movement of others is a nuisance. In normal course, an owner of the land has a right to use the land, but if eastmentary rights are in existence, then that cannot be curtailed. In case the passage is obstructed intentionally by the owners, you may give a police complaint.

In early January 2020, I had booked, through a city travel agent, two flight tickets (for my wife and I) to go abroad (by Etihad Airways) in the first week of May 2020, and return by the end of July 2020. I had paid the entire fare amount, along with service charges, to the travel agent, in late January. Since no international flight was in operation because of the nation-wide lockdown, our trips stood cancelled. When asked for a full refund (due to airlines cancelling the flight) of the amount paid, the travel agent replied that they, in turn, had paid the amount to the airlines, and hence refund would be possible only when they get their money back. Is the travel agent not duty-bound to refund the amount to me, as my dealing was directly with him, not the airlines? Why should I wait till the airlines settle the travel agent’s account?

— PG Menon

Added :

ஆம்! உலகில் உள்ள அனைவரும் மான் போலத் தான் ஓடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறோம். இது, போட்டிகள் நிறைந்த உலகம். எப்படியும் வென்றே ஆக வேண்டும். இந்த ஓட்டத்தில், ஓடும் பலருக்கு பல வித காரணங்கள் உள்ளன. ஆனால், வென்றே ஆக வேண்டும் என்பது மட்டுமே, அனைவரின் நோக்கம்.நேர்மையாக ஓடி வெற்றி காண்போர், பல காலங்களுக்கு நிலைத்திருப்பர்; எதிரிகளிடம் பாராட்டு பெறுவர். இந்த ஓட்டம், தற்போது நமக்கு தேவையானது. இந்த இக்கட்டான நேரத்திலிருந்து மீண்டு வெளியே வரும் போது, ஒரு எதிர்மறை உணர்வு பரவவும் வாய்ப்பு உண்டு. எதற்காக பிறந்தோம்;
