Sailing from Chennai to Russia in just 24 hours

Sailing from Chennai to Russia in just 24 hours

New Sea Link To Vladivostok To Help Avoid Middle East

V Ayyappan & P Oppili | TNN

20.04.2021

If everything goes as per plan, giant oil tanker ships carrying crude oil or LNG may sail into Chennai from Vladivostok in Russia in a year.

Two years after it was first mooted, Chennai Port Trust will start the process to identify a consultant this week to study feasibility of a Chennai-Vladivostok sea link via the Straits of Malacca and South China Sea, covering ports in Malaysia, Philippines and South Korea.

A tender was floated in March and the technical bids will be opened on Friday. The commercial bids or final bids are expected to be opened on April 22.

The consultant will study the route, its revenue potential, the goods that can be transported and other details in around four to five months after the contract has been awarded.

The Eastern maritime corridor is shorter and ships will be able to sail to the destination in Russia in 24hours as against the longer route via Suez Canal and Europe.

The main aim of the route is to import crude oil and LNG as part of the efforts to explore import options from countries other than those in the Middle East, said an official.

ONGC Videsh has already started production in an offshore field off Sakhalin Islands in Russia. There is also scope for bringing coal, timber, machinery, agriculture produce, vehicles, tin, gold, diamond and other materials from Russia.

Sources in the Chennai Port Trust said there are some cargo movements from Chennai to Vladivostok at present. This cargo passes through Visakhapatnam, Kolkata, Myanmar, Malaysia and reaches Suez Canal from there to the east coast of Russia. This also means that the cargo needs to be clubbed with those headed to other ports. So far there is no direct connectivity between Chennai port and the Russian ports. Hence it was proposed to take up the study to explore the possibility of improving the trade between the two nations.

“We feel that if a study on this route is done, it will help in understanding the potential that it will provide to those in the trade. The study will also help in learning about the types of cargo that can be transported from Chennai to Vladivostok,” said a senior official. The route is being prepared after Prime Minister Narendra Modi signed an agreement at Vladivostok in 2019.

The proposed eastern maritime corridor will link ports of Chennai, Visakhapatnam and Kolkata with those of ports in Vladivostok, Vostochny and Olga in the east coast of Russia.

Travelling to Delhi? Ensure you have a negative RT-PCR report

Travelling to Delhi? Ensure you have a negative RT-PCR report

Jamal.Ayub@timesgroup.com

Bhopal:25.02.2021

Travelling to Delhi from Madhya Pradesh? From Friday, those travelling to Delhi from MP would need a negative RT-PCR report to enter India’s capital city. On Wednesday, the Delhi government made the test mandatory for travellers from Maharashtra, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab. The directive would be valid until March15.

Travel plans of many people planning to come to MP and then go to Delhi are expected to be postponed or cancelled. MP’s positivity rate has also increased in the past week. Government officials going to Delhi for official work would also have to undergo the mandatory test.

MP is amongst 12 states that, in the last one week, have reported more than100 average daily new cases. During the past week, 270 average daily new cases were reported in MP. The state ranks seventh in the tally of 12, after Gujarat (287), Punjab (356), Karnataka (396), TN (449), Kerala (4,135) and Maharashtra (5,858) in the average daily new cases over the past one week.

The Delhi government’s announcement came as a surprise to many in MP’s health department. The announcement came less than 12 hours after the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said ruled out direct relation between the surge in cases in Maharashtra and some other states and mutant strains, N440K and E484Q.

ICMR DG, Dr Balram Bhargava, clarified that these two virus strains have been detected in other countries too and are not specific to India. Moreover, they have been found earlier in some states in India.

The new rule will come into effect from February 26

Passengers from cities with high Covid-19 cases go unmonitored

Passengers from cities with high Covid-19 cases go unmonitored

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Chennai:  22.11.2020

Covid-19 cases may be surging in Delhi, but close to 3,000 people who arrive by flights and trains daily go almost unmonitored as checks have been relaxed following unlocking of restrictions. Temperature check is done at the airport but follow-up tracking is not done while at railway stations arriving passengers are not checked.

Delhi reported around 6,000cases in a single day. Chennai receives around 12 flights and two trains every day from the national capital.

An airport official said that a temperature check of arriving domestic passengers is being done but then the vigil has gone down because of the unlock mode and passengers are allowed to arrive and depart without much of a restriction as part of encouraging travel. However, the temperature check cannot be considered as foolproof as it will not be able to screen people who do not show symptoms. Two people — one from Delhi and another from UP — tested positive on Friday and one passenger from Karnataka tested positive after they showed symptoms on arrival on Saturday.

"The sudden increase in cases in Delhi is baffling. The cases should have subsided by now but it is shooting up. Airline staff are taking precautions as patronage of flights has increased. Delhi-Chennai route is one of the most popular routes," said an airline official.

The Maharashtra government is considering limiting the number of flights from Delhi. But the Airports Authority of India (AAI) or the airlines have not got any such advice from the Tamil Nadu government.

Better screening and testing of domestic passengers at the airport and at the railway station is a huge challenge as the number of passengers has increased.

Swab samples are being taken from international passengers but not from domestic passengers because there was a concern of creating congestion inside the arrival terminal. A railway official said that all passengers who reach the stations to board the trains are screened for temperature or flu-like symptoms.

However, former director of public health Dr K Kolandaswamy said, "We have crossed the screening stage. All those measures were needed in the early stage to prevent entry of the infection. But now herd immunity is increasing. When there is 40% herd immunity the infection starts to reduce."

Travel companies refuse refund for trips cancelled

Yogesh.Kabirdoss@timesgroup.com

Chennai:13.04.2020

Indian tourists, who have made reservations for international travel through tour operators, are in a fix, as travel agencies are refusing to refund for packages that got cancelled due to outbreak of novel coronavirus.

Tour firms are offering credit note and are allowing people to travel any time by end of this year, just like airlines are doing. But they charge hefty cancellations fee for those who prefer a refund on tours scheduled during shutdown.

Sumit Tiwari, who had booked a tour package with a private tour company for Europe scheduled on April 22 said "I had paid ₹1.1 lakh for the package. With the lockdown coming into effect, I received a mail from the tour operator to either cancel or reschedule my trip for which, charges to the tune of ₹81,000 have been levied," he said. After he raised the issue with the travel company, besides highlighting his complaint on Twitter, an offer was made to extend his trip till December 2020. "Still, reschedule charges would apply," he said.

Tourism sector sources said that Covid-19 has turned the future of global travel industry bleak that is unlikely to revive within a short time as both the source countries and destinations are hit. It comes a year after international tourism faced rough weather that witnessed closure travel giants across the world.

Tamil Nadu Tour Travel and Hospitality Association president V K T Balan said that overseas trips worth of ₹2,250 crore that were planned by people various segments of travellers such as leisure, conference and incentives from Tamil Nadu between March and May have gone for a toss. “Except for leading tour operators, other travel firms have paid for hotels and airfare. We are keeping our fingers crossed on the future,” he added.

However, insurance for tour packages would have saved the customers money. Several travellers flying overseas for leisure trips take overseas travel insurance that covers loss of baggage and passport, missed air connections or medical emergencies. "On the other hand, hardly a few travellers insure their tour packages that are eligible for refund in the event of the trips getting due to unexpected turn of events like the current novel coronavirus outbreak. Neither travel companies or customers prefer to insure because it pushes the cost of the packages by 1% to 5% on the total cost depending on the countries, which is undesired by both," he said.

In fact, the Union government must mandate insurance for every overseas trip," he said.

Many European nations and US stress on insuring tours packages. Indian Association of Tour Operators Tamil Nadu chapter chairman Pandian K said that travel insurance comes in handy for foreigners during such emergencies.

Tourism sector sources said that Covid-19 has turned the future of global travel industry bleak. It is unlikely to revive within a short time as both the source countries and destinations are hit. Have an odd-hour flight or train? Take a metro

TNN | Mar 30, 2019, 06.41 AM IST

CHENNAI: Beginning Saturday, metro trains will be available from 4.30am to 11pm as Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is extending operations after months of running trials. A train will be available every 30 minutes from 4.30am to 6am and from 10pm to 11pm, while the existing schedule will be followed between 6am and 10pm. The extension of services will benefit early birds, morning joggers, late shift workers and commuters heading to railway stations or the airport to catch late night and early trains/ flights.

“We have arranged sufficient security and staff required to operate services from 4.30am. We expect the extension of services to attract and benefit more commuters,” a metro rail official said.

At present, metro trains are available from 6am to 10pm. In the new schedule, the first train from Washermenpet, Airport, Chennai Central and St Thomas Mount will depart at 4.30am and the last train at 11pm.

During peak hours — 8am to 11am and from 5pm to 8pm — trains will be available every five minutes across both the corridors from Washermenpet to Airport and from Chennai Central to St Thomas Mount. Every alternate train would be a direct service from Chennai Central to Airport.

During non-peak hours, trains will be operated every seven minutes. The new extended timings will be followed from Monday to Saturday. On Sundays, the existing time table will be followed with services from 7.58am to 10pm, officials said.

CMRL has been conducting trial runs for the past six months, operating trains from 4.30am to 11pm, while the actual operational hours continued to be from 6am to 10pm. The trials were done to synchronise operations, duty hours of staff members, requirement of additional manpower at stations and daily maintenance of trains after operational hours. “We have been making station controllers and staff who work on shifts to begin their duty at 4.30am to check for smooth daily operations,” an official said. “We also had to check if our daily maintenance of trains was feasible within the reduced time left after the extension”.

Metro rail was also working to make security arrangements to cover the extended hours. At present, outsourced private security personnel and state police guard metro stations in the city. “Based on the response, we will increase the frequency in the early morning hours,” an official said.

Extension of train hailed

Passengers want Tiruchi-Karur train to be made permanent

Passengers have welcomed the extension of the Tiruchi – Karur – Tiruchi DEMU passenger trains to Salem from Januay 11 to January 17 to clear the rush during the Pongal season.
They have urged the Salem Railway Division to make it a regular service.

The 76833 Tiruchi – Karur passenger departs Tiruchi at 9.35 a.m. and arrives at Karur at 11.35 a.m.

The train will depart Karur at 11.40 a.m., Vangal 11.49 a.m.; Mohanur 11.59 a.m.; Laddivadi 12.13 p.m.; Namakkal 12.24 p.m.; Kalangani 12.37 p.m.; Rasipuram 12.44 p.m.; Puduchattiram 12.54 p.m.; Mallur 1.06 p.m. and will reach Salem at 1.25 p.m., a release here has said.

The 76834 will depart from Salem at 1.30 p.m.; Mallur 1.44 p.m.; Puduchattiram 1.57 p.m.; Rasipuram 2.07 p.m.; Kalangani 2.15 p.m.; Namakkal 2.28 p.m.; Laddivadi 2.37 p.m.; Mohanur 2.49 p.m.; Vangal 3 p.m. and will reach Karur Junction at 3.20 p.m. From Karur the train will depart at 3.30 p.m. and will reach Tiruchi at 5.35 p.m.

Welcoming the decision of the railways to extend the trains up to Salem, K. Murugan, member, Mohanur Rail Commuters Welfare Association, said that the train will immensely benefit the rural people.

He said that passengers of the western and the central districts have been demanding a direct train from Salem to Tiruchi / Thanjavur via Namakkal and Karur.

At present, the Mayiladuthurai – Mysore Express is the only regular train operated in the Tiruchi – Karur – Namakkal – Salem route, which arrives at Namakkal and Salem in the night.
At a time when commuters were asking for more trains in the Salem – Namakkal – Tirchi section, the railways have abruptly cancelled the Salem – Karur passenger train introduced at the behest of M. Thambidurai, Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker.
The absence of a direct train service between the headquarters of two railway divisions – Salem and Tiruchi is posing much hardship to senior citizens, women and the sick, said 80-year-old B. S. Barkathullah, a former bank manager of Suramangalam in the city, who frequents Tiruchi.

The Salem Railway Division should take steps to concede the long pending demand of the people by regularising the extended train, he said.

Govt. seeks report on IndiGo passenger assault

Incident took place on October 15

In a replay of the infamous United Airlines incident where a passenger was brutally assaulted, a video surfaced on Tuesday showing IndiGo staff assaulting a traveller at the Delhi airport.
The passenger was first seen being stopped from entering a coach, then pulled back by a ground staff. Another airline employee was seen restraining the traveller. The passenger fought back and fell to the ground in the melee.
The incident happened on October 15.
Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha condemned the incident in a series of tweets, and said the government had sought a report from the airline.
In another tweet, he said he would also meet the passenger. “We hope the passenger will file a criminal complaint. This will enable us to take appropriate action,” he said.
IndiGo president and whole time director Aditya Ghosh apologised, and said stern action was taken against the staff.
A Delhi police official said they received a call from the police control room but no one filed a complaint.

New Delhi: An enraged woman forced an airliner to make an emergency landing after she discovered mid-flight that her husband was apparently cheating on her.

The woman, an Iranian national, was travelling from Doha to Bali with her husband and child on a Qatar Airways flight on Sunday, India's Hindustan Times reported Tuesday.

As her husband slept, she used his hand to unlock his fingerprint-protected phone, revealing the alleged affair in all its sordid detail.

Angered by the discovery, the woman reportedly started to hit her husband. The cabin crew intervened but were unable to calm the situation.

With the inflight episode spiralling out of control, the pilots decided to make an unscheduled stop in the southern Indian city of Chennai.

The woman, her husband and their child were taken off the plane, which then resumed its journey to Indonesia, an unnamed security official told the paper.

"The family spent the day at Chennai airport and was sent to Kuala Lumpur by a Batik Air flight. No police action was taken," the official said.

Qatar Airways was not immediately available for comment when contacted.

IndiGo staff manhandle passenger, airline apologises

Airline apologised after video of the incident came to public domain

NEW DELHI: In a shocker, IndiGo ground staff manhandled and dragged a passenger at Delhi Airport on October 15 after a tiff. An airline employee who acted as a whistleblower, tried to intervene and shot a video of this violence and was sacked by the airline.

This drama unfolded on October 15 when 6E 487 flew into Delhi from Chennai. After alighting from the Airbus A-320, a passenger Rajiv Katiyal got into an argument with some ground staffers over some issue and he allegedly abused them. What sparked this argument has not be ascertained yet.

Two to three IndiGo ground staffers stopped Katyal from boarding the bus which was taking passengers to the terminal. They then manhandled him and dragged him on the tarmac for over a minute. An IndiGo employee, Montu Kalra, who was at the site tried to intervene and shot a video of his colleagues manhandling the passenger.

Instead of acting against the employees who thrashed passenger Katiyal, IndiGo sacked Kalra whose wife is pregnant and who needs the job desperately for his growing family.

On Tuesday when Kalra's video became public and was aired by Times Group's Times Now, Aviation minister Jayant spoke to IndiGo founder Rahul Bhatia and sought a detailed report on this issue. He said once the passenger lodges a criminal complaint (FIR) against the IndiGo employees who beat him up, they will lose their security clearance for airport passes and not be able to go there for their job. Effectively, the guilty employees of IndiGo will not be able to work in the aviation industry, Sinha said.

Sanjay Bhatia, IGI Airport DCP, confirmed receiving a PCR call regarding the tiff between the passenger and IndiGo employees on October 15. "Passenger Rajeev Katiyal, who had flown in from Chennai, was waiting for coach bus. There was altercation between IndiGo staffer Jubi Thomas and the passenger due to a misunderstanding. The matter was amicably sorted out and call was filed."

IndiGo president Aditya Ghosh said in a statement: "I acknowledge the unpleasant experience our passenger went through, while engaging with our staff at Delhi airport. My personal apologies as this does not reflect our culture. I had personally spoken to the passenger and asked for an apology. At IndiGo, dignity of our passengers and staff is of utmost importance. Any act that compromises the dignity of either is of a serious concern to us. Under the code of conduct violation, this incident was investigated and stern action was taken against the staff. Once again my personal and sincere apologies to the affected passenger."

The airline later added to this statement, saying: "Treating our customers with respect is core to what we do. Every day we take tens of thousands of happy customers to where they need to get to. It is for this reason that customers choose IndiGo more number of times than any other airline in the country. An incident happened in Delhi airport which is entirely the opposite of this and against what we stand for at IndiGo. The video of this incident came to our attention and we took action. Even while the investigation was going on we immediately suspended the involved employees. I personally spoke to the customer and apologised to him the very same day. Whatever may have been the provocation, our staff were completely out of line and didn't follow laid down procedures.... Under the code of conduct violation, this incident was investigated by the designated committee and stern action was taken against the staff who was he main culprit by immediately terminating his employment. He was the one found instigating and aggravating the situation. He is the exact opposite of what IndiGo's customer service aims to be."

Govt. plans to sell Air India, AI Express together

Separate bidders likely for regional airline Alliance Air; process to be concluded by June 2018

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government is working to conclude the sale of national carrier Air India by June 2018 and is keen on selling its core airline operations, together with its low-cost international airline, Air India Express.
As per a decision taken by the Air India-specific Alternative Mechanism — a group of Ministers led by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to decide on the modalities of stake sale in the national carrier — the Centre will look to sell AI’s regional airline Alliance Air to a separate universe of bidders while Air India and Air India Express will likely go together.
At a meeting of the ministerial group on September 21, the view was that a separate universe of bidders or prospective buyers be invited for Air India’s ground handling subsidiary — Air India Air Transport Service Limited (AIATSL) — and its maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) unit — Air India Engineering Services Limited (AIESL) — top government sources said.
Talks with buyers
“The rationale is that we can find prospective buyers from international airlines if we call bids for Air India and Air India Express together. Since Alliance Air operates flights mainly on regional domestic routes, it makes more sense to sell it off separately,” a source added.
The decision was taken after the government held several rounds of backchannel talks with prospective buyers of Air India and its subsidiaries.
Sources said the government met companies involved in MRO, ground handling and airline operations to examine whether all the subsidiaries should be sold off together or calling for separate set of bidders would increase Air India’s valuation.

COIMBATORE: AN Air Arabia flight from Sharjah was grounded at Coimbatore airport after the fight suffered a snag following a bird hit during landing here in the early hours of Sunday. A mishap was avoided when the flight landed on the runway after the bird hit. According to airport officials, the daily international flight usually landed at 4 am at Coimbatore International Airport and departed for Sharjah at 4.40 am. When the flight was preparing to land the pilot heard a sound on the left wing.
The pilot landed the flight which had 107 passengers on board. Inspection later showed damage to the wing. Following the snag, the return service to Sharjah from Coimbatore was suspended and crew of about 163 passengers were forced to wait some hours. Then some of them were sent to Cochin, Chennai through domestic flights in order for them to reach Sharjah.
A technical team was called to correct the snag. As of 6 pm on Sunday, the flight service was not resumed. Officials said it would be ready by Sunday night. R Mahalingam, director, Coimbatore International Airport, said, “It has been identified that a bird hit damaged the left wing when the plane was 400 ft above the outer space of the airport exactly at Chinniampalayam.”He said,  “To stop the such incidents, we have made a technical arrangement using sonar gun, which emits sound during the take off and landing of flights. We cannot prevent bird hits in space outside the airport.”
