Chennai: Chief minister C Joseph Vijay on Saturday announced a 3% hike in dearness allowance for govt employees, teachers, pensioners and family pensioners with retrospective effect from July 1. The revision, from 60% to 63%, will benefit 16 lakh people and entail an additional burden of 1,858 crore on state exchequer, according to an official release.
This, govt said, was in recognition of the roles played by officials and teachers in formulating and implementing welfare schemes. Employees and pensioners will also receive arrears for July to Oct ahead of Diwali.
“Govt employees are happy about this. The happiness has doubled with govt allowing us to claim arrears before Diwali,” said Tamil Nadu secretariat association president G Venkatesan. This move comes after Union cabinet on Wednesday approved a 3% hike in DA to compensate against price rise. tnn
