DMK, AIADMK spar over who is to blame for 2015 floods ‘CAG Said 2015 Flood, A Man-made’

DMK, AIADMK spar over who is to blame for 2015 floods ‘CAG Said 2015 Flood, A Man-made’

TIMES NEWS NETWORK  11.12.2024

Chennai : The Chembarambakkam fiasco continued to haunt AIADMK nine years after the disastrous 2015 floods that ravaged Chennai. DMK and AIADMK locked horns in the state assembly on Tuesday over the issue of water release from the lake and consequent flooding. While chief minister M K Stalin and other ministers said floods in 2015 were caused by unannounced water release from Chembarambakkam lake, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami argued Adyar river had more carrying capacity than what was released from Chembarambakkam Lake.

“Water was released from Chembarambakkam lake without prior intimation, leading to the death of more than 250 people. Even the CAG report tabled in 2018 made it clear that it was aman-made disaster. There was a problem in seeking permission to open the dam on time, and as the permission could not be obtained, the dam was opened without prior intimation,” Stalin said.

Palaniswami responded, saying Chembarambakkam lake was constructed for drinking water purposes and only a total of 29,000 cusecs were released from the lake that day. As the total carrying capacity of Adyar river was one lakh cusecs, the release of water at 29,000 cusecs from the lake did not cause flooding. Excess water from more than 100 lakes downstream of Chembarambakkam lake flowed in to Adyar river and resulted in the flooding, said Palaniswami. “Opening of Chembarambakkam lake did not result in flooding in Adyar River. It was the excess rain that resulted in lakes getting filled up quickly, resulting in flooding in Adyar river,” said Palaniswami.

Health minister Ma Subramanian said the carrying capacity of the river was not one lakh cusecs. “I still reside by the side of Adyar river, and if water is released at 10,000 to 15,000 cusecs there will be flooding in the river,” Subramanian said. He also issued a challenge to Palaniswami, asking him to bring experts from IIT Madras to check the capacity of Adyar river. HR and CE minister P K Sekarbabu argued Chennai had seen severe rainfall in the last 45 years, but never before was the death toll so high as in 2015.

City, suburbs to get rain with thunderstorms for next 2 days

City, suburbs to get rain with thunderstorms for next 2 days

Tejonmayam@timesofindia.com 20.10.2024

Chennai : Overnight rain left 2cm of rainfall in Nungambakkam and 6mm in Meenambakkam. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate monsoon rainfall for the next two days. Weather bloggers also forecast that night spells could continue for the next few days. “For the next 48 hours, the city and suburbs may receive moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning in some areas. Skies may be partly cloudy, with maximum and minimum temperatures at 33°C-34°C and 25°C-26°C,” the IMD bulletin stated.

The rainfall is attributed to favourable winds in the region. IMD said that that a cyclonic circulation currently lies over the southwest and westcentral Bay of Bengal off the north Tamil Nadu coast, extending up to 5.8km above sea level and tilting southwestwards. “Night to morning rain will continue on Sunday morning in north Tamil Nadu, and this trend will persist over the next few days for Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengelpet, and other parts of north Tamil Nadu,” blogger Pradeep John said in a post. The IMD has also forecast heavy rainfall for several interior and delta districts in the coming days. On Oct 20, districts like Dharmapuri, Krish nagiri, Salem, Erode, Tirupattur, and Vellore could see heavy rainfall ranging from 6cm to 12cm at isolated locations. Additionally, ghat areas in nine districts, including Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, and Nilgiris, may experience heavy spells on Oct 21. Similar weather is expected on Oct 24 in districts such as Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Tiruchy, and Perambalur. The IMD previously forecast the development of a lowpressure system over the north Andaman Sea next week, expected to intensify into a depression and move northwest.

However, weather bloggers believe this system may bypass Chennai and move towards the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coast.

Since Oct 1, Nungambakkam has recorded 34cm and Meenambakkam 27 cm of rainfall. The Chennai subdivision has received 32cm of rainfall, which is 187% above the normal amount. During the same period, Tamil Nadu recorded 15 cm, a 70% excess.

City to get rain for four days next week: IMD Chennai Recorded 191% Excess This Month

City to get rain for four days next week: IMD Chennai Recorded 191% Excess This Month

TIMES NEWS NETWORK 19.10.2024

Chennai : A disturbance in the atmosphere may bring rain back to the city and north Tamil Nadu from next week. IMD officials said a trough might bring rain spells to north coastal and north interior Tamil Nadu for at least four days next week. For the next two days, the city and the suburbs may receive light to moderate intensity rain. The agency has also forecast a low pressure to form over the Bay of Bengal and intensify into a depression. Bloggers suggested that the system might skip the city. “An east-west trough may bring rainfall from Oct 21. North coastal and north interior districts may get rainfall for four days,” said an IMD official.

The agency has also forecast that a fresh upper air cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the North Andaman Sea around Oct 20. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over the central Bay of Bengal around Oct 22. The system is likely to move northwestwards and intensify into a depression by Oct 24. Private forecasters earlier said the system might move towards the Odisha coast, which may lead to a marginal rise in temperature in the city as the winds may be concentrated around the weather system. “The system will be above our Chennai latitude when it enters the Andaman Sea. If the low pressure remains weak, it will be pushed towards Tamil Nadu by low-level easterlies. Mostly, it will intensify and move up,” blogger Pradeep John said in his post. Since Oct 1, Nungambakkam recorded 32 cm and Meenambakkam 27 cm. The Chennai subdivision recorded 30 cm, which is around 191% excess. During the same time, Tamil Nadu recorded 14 cm, around 73% excess.

In Chennai, which has received heavy downpours since last night, bus services were affected in several areas while Southern Railway announced that four trains were cancelled due to waterlogging between Basin Bridge and Vyasarpadi railway stations. At least eight domestic flights were cancelled as sufficient number of passengers did not turn up to avail services.

In view of heavy rainfall forecast, barring essential services, the state government declared October 16 a holiday for schools, colleges and government for the coastal districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengelpet.

In its advisory, the government asked private establishments to facilitate ‘work from home’ for their employees till October 18 and asked people to check the TN Alert App for weather updates. The Chennai Corporation established a helpline number 1913.

On the heavy rainfall warning in Tamil Nadu, state relief commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said some parts of Chennai received as high as 16 cm rainfall. He said there is full preparedness for any eventuality and resources have been planned and placed in advance.

“…Around 26 teams of NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) have been placed in five coastal districts. Boats with manpower also placed. We have identified 300 relief centres in Chennai and around 931 relief centres in neaby areas. This time we are doing centralised cooking… Medical camps are being arranged. We have ensured that all old age homes and homes for the destitute have dry ration for the next 10 days. 80 pregnant women with due deliveries have been admitted to different hospitals,” he said.

City gets rainy season’s 1st orange alert

City gets rainy season’s 1st orange alert

Rain Activity Likely Due To Weather System That May Form Over The Bay Utejonmayam@timesofindia.com

13.10.2024

Chennai : The met department has issued an orange alert for Chennai and neighbouring districts of Kancheepuram, Chengalpet and Tiruvallur on Oct 15, saying heavy to very heavy premonsoon rain of 6cm to 20cm is likely next week. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a yellow alert (6cm-12 cm) for Chennai and its suburbs for Oct 14 and 16, saying they are likely to receive heavy rainfall. The rain activity is likely due to a weather system that may form over the Bay and bring spells across several districts next week. Bloggers said if the system moves slowly, the rain activity may last longer. “For the next 48 hours, the city and the suburbs may receive moderate intensity rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over some are as. Sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy. Maximum temperature is likely to be at 32°C-33°C and minimum temperature likely to be 25°C26°C,” said an IMD bulletin.

At present, there is an upper air cyclonic circulation over the south Tamil Nadu coast and one over the southwest Bay of Bengal. Meteorologists said the latter system may develop into a low pressure and may move along the Tamil Nadu coast, bringing rainfall to several districts. It may or may not develop into a depression as it may be close to the coast and not over deep sea to gain energy from the warm waters. On Oct 14, districts such as Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Ariyalur, Chengalpet and Mayiladuthurai may re ceive heavy rain. Rain intensity may increase on Oct 15 as Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Chengelpet may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. Rainfall may continue on Oct 16, with ghat  areas of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Dharmapuri, Tirupattur, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Krishnagiri, Salem, and Tiruvannamalai districts possibly receiving heavy rainfall.

In the last few days, Chennai city received on and off rain spells of light intensity, as cloudy weather kept the day temperatures down. The overnight rainfall left 1 cm each in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam. The day after the night spells was pleasant, with temperatures. Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 32.1°C and 31.4 °C, 0.8 °C and 1.5 °C below normal Blogger Pradeep John, in an online post, said the system may form over the south-central Bay and move towards the north Tamil NaduSouth Andhra Pradesh coast. “Whenever a system takes this route, it gives plenty of rainfall to the north Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh coasts, and particularly with the convex shape of the Chennai coast, they fall on the hotspot. If the low pressure slows down near the coast, it can give rainfall for more than 2-3 days,” he said. MSID:: 114172736 413 |

CHENNAI  10.10.2024

Rainfall is set to steadily increase and cover most parts of the State this week, paving the way for the onset of the northeast monsoon, Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has said.

While the southwest monsoon has been retreating rapidly, and is expected to completely withdraw in a few days, the RMC has forecast heavy rainfall to continue till October 15 in many districts.

In its extended forecast for two weeks, the India Meteorological Department had predicted that the northeast monsoon would likely set in around October 15. Officials at the RMC, however, said the date of onset would be determined in one or two days after the criteria of monsoon arrival were analysed. Some conditions include complete withdrawal of the southwest monsoon, setting in of the easterly winds close to the Tamil Nadu coast, and a fairly widespread rainfall wherein 50% of the weather stations receive rain.

Multiple weather systems that are prevailing now would enhance easterlies and rainfall over the State. A low pressure area over Lakshadweep and the adjoining Arabian sea, which is one of the weather systems, is likely to gain strength as a depression.

P. Senthamarai Kannan, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said the interaction between various weather systems would influence wet weather. The cyclonic circulation over Sri Lanka and its neighbourhood, which would oscillate its position close to the Tamil Nadu coast, would also influence heavy rainfall in various parts of the State till October 14. The RMC has predicted that large swathes of the region would receive light to moderate rain till October 14. Enhanced rain has been forecast for 10 districts, including Salem, Karur, Tiruchi, and Krishnagiri, with an yellow alert – indicating heavy rainfall of above 6.4 cm – for Thursday.

More districts, including Dindigul, Cuddalore, Virudhunagar and Madurai, would continue to receive heavy rain till October 15. An orange alert has been sounded for Tamil Nadu and Kerala, indicating the possibility of rainfall of very heavy intensity (11.5 cm to 20.4 cm) on October 12, 13, and 14. Very heavy rainfall may lash isolated places in districts in the northern parts and the delta region. In the past 24 hours, ending 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday, several interior places and some coastal places received rainfall. Moderate rain continued till the evening at various places such as Valparai (5 cm), Thuvakudi in Tiruchi district (4 cm) and Ramanathapuram (3 cm).

The Meteorological department has forecast that Chennai would experience light to moderate rainfall in some areas till Friday.
