Chennai : The city and its suburbs may receive heavy rainfall on Saturday and Sunday, as the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to cross the northern Sri Lanka coast on Saturday.

Chennai, Chengalpet, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram were placed under a yellow alert for heavy rainfall of 6-12cm in 24 hours on Jan 10 and 11. The most intense rain activity is likely to be concentrated over the delta region, with Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore under an orange alert for very heavy rainfall of 12-20cm.

“On Saturday, the city and the suburbs may receive moderate to heavy rainfall over some areas. The sky may be generally cloudy, pulling down day temperatures to about 2728°C. Night temperatures may remain warm at around 24°C,” an IMD bulletin said. As of Friday evening, the deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal was about 590km south-southeast of Chennai. It is likely to move northwestwards and cross the northern Sri Lanka coast between Trincomalee and Jaffna around Saturday afternoon. Apart from Chennai and its neighbouring districts, the system is expected to bring heavy rainfall over several coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, including Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram, on Saturday.

On Sunday, heavy rain activity may be confinedto northern districts. On Friday, cloudy skies prevailed over the city, with light drizzles reported in a few areas, leaving traces of rainfall at the Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam observatories. Calling the system ‘rare’, weather blogger Pradeep John said the deep depression is likely to weaken and fizzle out after crossing Sri Lanka.

“There may be isolated rain spells on Monday,” he said.
