Chennai : The city is likely to get a brief respite from rains starting Tuesday as the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal moves northward and develops into a cyclone. However, heavy rains are expected to lash Chennai and neighbouring districts on Monday as the system will move vertically towards Andhra Pradesh 

Regional Meteorological Centre's director Senthamarai Kannan said that coastal districts like Chennai, Tiruvallur and Chengalpet will receive moderate to heavy rains. “The intensity of the rains may vary from one place to another depending upon the cloud movement, but the higher intensity has been forecast,” said the official. 

A heavy rain forecast has been issued for Kancheepuram, Vellore, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvannamalai, and Kallakurichi districts over isolated places. Weatherman Pradeep John said that the rains will start on Monday morning and last till Tuesday morning. 

The IMD on Sunday issued a cyclone alert to Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and adjoining South Odisha coasts as the deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal moved northwestwards with a speed of 8kmph. It lay centred about 620km west of Port Blair (Andaman & Nicobar Islands), 770km east-southeast of Chennai, 820km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 810km southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), and 920km south-southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha). “It is likely to move in the nearly west-northwest direction, intensify further into a cyclonic storm over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal during the next 12 hours. 

Then, it is likely to move northwestwards, then north-northwestwards, and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm on Oct 28. It is very likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada on Tuesday evening or night as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90100kmph gusting to 110kmph,” said IMD’s forecast.

இது குறித்து சென்னை வானிலை ஆய்வு மையம் புதன்கிழமை வெளியிட்டுள்ள அறிக்கை:

வடகிழக்குப் பருவமழை தீவிரமடைந்து வருகிறது. தமிழகத்தில் புதன்கிழமை காலை 8.30 மணியுடன் முடிவடைந்த கடந்த 24 மணி நேரத்தில் அதிகபட்சமாக புதுச்சேரியின் பெரிய காலாப்பேட்டை பகுதியில் 250 மி.மீ. மழை பதிவானது.

ஆழ்ந்த காற்றழுத்தத் தாழ்வுப் பகுதி: செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை (அக். 21) தென்மேற்கு வங்கக் கடலில் நிலவிய ஆழ்ந்த காற்றழுத்தத் தாழ்வுப் பகுதி, வடமேற்கு திசையில் நகா்ந்து, புதன்கிழமை காலை தென்மேற்கு வங்கக் கடலில், தமிழக கடலோரப் பகுதிகளுக்கு அப்பால் நிலவுகிறது. இது வியாழக்கிழமை(அக். 23) காலை 11 மணிக்குள் வட தமிழகம், புதுச்சேரி, தெற்கு ஆந்திர கடலோரப் பகுதிகளைக் கடந்து நகா்ந்து செல்லக் கூடும்.

இதன் காரணமாக, வியாழக்கிழமை (அக். 23) முதல் அக். 28 வரை தமிழகத்தின் பெரும்பாலான இடங்களிலும், புதுச்சேரி, காரைக்கால் பகுதிகளிலும் இடி, மின்னலுடன் கூடிய மிதமான மழைக்கு வாய்ப்புள்ளது.

‘மஞ்சள்’ எச்சரிக்கை: சென்னை, திருவள்ளூா், செங்கல்பட்டு, காஞ்சிபுரம், ராணிப்பேட்டை மாவட்டங்களில் ஓரிரு இடங்களில் வியாழக்கிழமை (அக். 23) பலத்த மழை பெய்ய வாய்ப்புள்ளது. இதனால், இந்த 5 மாவட்டங்களுக்கு ‘மஞ்சள்’ எச்சரிக்கை விடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

தொடா்ந்து வெள்ளிக்கிழமை (அக். 24) கடலூா், விழுப்புரம், செங்கல்பட்டு ஆகிய மாவட்டங்களிலும் பலத்த மழை பெய்ய வாய்ப்புள்ளதால் இந்த மாவட்டங்களுக்கும் மஞ்சள் எச்சரிக்கை விடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

பொதுவாக ஏப்ரல், மே மாதங்களில் வெயிலின் தாக்கம் அதிகரித்து காணப்படும். ஆனால், கடந்த சில நாள்களாக வெயில் 100 டிகிரியை எட்டிய நிலையில், நடப்பாண்டில் இதுவரை இல்லாத அளவாக திங்கள்கிழமை 102.2 டிகிரி பாரன்ஹீட் வெப்பம் பதிவானது. இதனால் கடுமையான அனல்காற்று வீசியது.

New Delhi : Flights were cancelled, trains ran late and weekend road traffic was sluggish as the city was enveloped in a dense fog for as long as 12 hours , with zero visibility for up to 9 hours at some places, starting late Friday night. This occurred against a backdrop of cold and polluted weather. A yellow alert was issued by the Met, expecting moderate to dense fog on Sunday and light to very light rain on Monday. According to IMD, on Saturday, very dense fog led to zero visibility, which lasted for nine hours at Palam and six hours at Safdarjung, making it the season's worst fog situation for the city. Fog conditions also impacted a large area of ​​the Indo-Gangetic plains, affecting transport. According to FlightRadar24, over 400 flights were delayed, and the average delay was 34 minutes. Train services were hit, leaving 1.5 to 2 lakh passengers stranded or delayed while traveling to and from Delhi. The severe weather disrupted 100 trains, with 49 requiring rescheduling due to maintenance needs.

Bhopal : The city woke up to the first dense fog of the season on Wednesday. There was a sharp dip in the day temperature, which made it a colder day in Bhopal. The night temperature in the city also remained below the normal mark. Biting cold is expected in the city and the state for the next few days. A warning of dense fog was issued for many places in the state. The day temperature in Bhopal on Wednesday was recorded at 18.3 degrees Celsius, six degrees below the normal mark, while the night temperature in the city was 8.4 degrees Celsius, two degrees below the normal mark. The visibility in Bhopal was less than 100 metres in the morning hours. The lowest temperature of 6.1 degrees Celsius was recorded in Shahdol. 

In the forecast for Bhopal on Thursday, the meteoro logical dept stated there would be a clear sky with shallow to moderate fog during the morning hours. The day and night temperatures would be 19 degrees Celsius and 8 degrees Celsius, respectively, while the average wind speed will be ten kilometres per hour. In the forecast for the state, the meteorological dept issued a warning of dense fog and a cold day at isolated places in Bhopal, Rajgarh, Umaria, Katni, Jabalpur, Damoh, Sagar, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, and Niwari districts. A warning of dense fog was issued for Vidisha, Raisen, Sehore, Singrauli, Sidhi, Rewa, Mauganj, Satna, and Maihar districts. A warning of moderate fog and a cold day was issued for Gwalior, Datia, Bhind, and Morena districts. A warning of moderate fog was issued for Shajapur, Agar, Mandsaur, Neemuch, Guna, Ashoknagar, Shivpuri, and Sheopur districts. A warning of shallow to moderate fog existed for Betul, Harda, Indore, Ratlam, Ujjain, and Dewas districts. Dry weather is expected to prevail in the state.

 Chennai : The weather system over the Bay of Bengal, which skipped the city last week and went to Andhra Pradesh, is making its journey southwards to hover off north Tamil Nadu. The system, which will be a well-marked low-pressure area, may bring monsoon rains back to the city and many parts of the state. The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall in the city and at a few places over north Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.

Bloggers said rain activity may begin around Wednesday. “On Tuesday, the city and the suburbs may receive light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning in some areas. The sky may be partly cloudy. Temperature may be at a maximum of around 30°C-31°C and at a minimum of around 23°C-24°C,” an IMD bulletin said. A few places over north coastal Tamil Nadu, and one or two places over the rest of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are also likely to receive light to moderate intensity rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning on Tuesday. Some pockets in interior Tamil Nadu may experience mist or haze during early morning hours. On Dec 25, many places over north Tamil Nadu, and one or two places over south Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal area are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning. 

The rain activity is likely to push rain records in Nungambakkam and Meenambak-kam weather stations, which have recorded 103cm and 99cm of rainfall since Oct 1, 21cm and 18cm excess for the season. The two stations recorded 182cm each so far this year against the annual average of 140cm and 138cm. Since Oct 1, Chennai city recorded 103cm, around 32% excess and Tamil Nadu recorded 57cm rain, around 33% excess. "Rainfall will commence from the night of Dec 25 to the morning of Dec 26 and will be there for two days in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chengalpet, and Tamil Nadu coastal districts," said blogger Pradeep John in one of his online posts.

Chennai : After a hot and dry Aug, parts of the city and suburbs, including OMR, ECR, Tambaram, Nanmangalam, and Chengalpet, experienced brief rain spells on Sunday. As the city enters Sept, more rain is expected, according to Regional Meteorological Centre. Rainfall on Sunday included 6.1mm at Pallikaranai (NIOT), 6mm at Sairam Institution in Chengalpet, and 4mm at Sathyabama University in Kanchipuram. Strong surface winds of 30 kmph-40 kmph were also observed. Regional Meteorological Centre predicts that over the next 48 hours, Chennai will have partly cloudy skies with light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in some areas. 

The maximum temperature is expected to range between 35°C and 36°C, with the minimum likely 27°C to 28°C. On Sunday, Nungambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 35°C. For the upcoming week, light to moderate rain is forecast at isolated locations across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. This pattern is expected to continue from Sept 1 through 7, with the first two days of the month likely to see thunderstorms and lightning in isolated areas, said N Senthamarai Kannan, director of the regional weather forecasting centre at IMD. 

Rain activity in Chennai remained below average for Aug, with the Nungambakkam observatory recording only 7cm of rainfall, compared to the average of 13cm. However, since June 1, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam observatories have recorded 48cm and 57cm of rainfall, respectively, which is 18cm and 25cm above normal.

CHENNAI: IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall for the next two days that may keep the day temperatures in check. This, however, would increase the humidity to up to 85%, making it sweaty. Private forecasters said the intensity of rainfall may increase over interior areas and showers may last for three to four days.

Regional Weather Forecasting Centre director N Senthamarai Kannan said the rain activity would be due to a trough, an elongated area of relatively low pressure, extending from east Vidarbha to south Tamil Nadu. "There is a possibility of thunderstorm here and there in the city for the next two to three days. Day temperatures may be near normal," he said.

Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist, Skymet Weather, said the trough would lead to a change in wind direction to southeasterlies from southwest Bay of Bengal leading to a drop in temperatures but rise in humidity. "The city may get some isolated spells. Rain intensity may be more over interior Tamil Nadu. This trend may last for three to four days," he said.

Temperatures may be around maximum of 38°C-39°C and minimum of 29°C-30°C. The sky may remain partly cloudy. Relative humidity over coastal areas may be around 55%-85% till May 10. The average maximum temperature in the city in May is 37.3°C. There will always be two-degree difference between Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam stations due to their distance from the coast. May also brings an average of 43mm rainfall over an average 1.6 days.

On Monday, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 35.9°C and 39.1°C. Humidity levels, which were at 75% and 67% at the two stations at 8.30am, shot up to 79% and 71%. This made the 'feel temperature' as high as 53°C over some parts of the city.

The city will continue to receive thunderstorms and moderate rain at a few places on Monday.

An IMD forecast said the sky condition will likely be cloudy, with thunderstorms and rain in some areas.

The city received heavy rain on Sunday evening. Nungambakkam recorded 20.6mm, Meenambakkam recorded 23 mm, Anna University 16mm, Taramani 14.5mm, MRC Nagar 5.5mm rain till 7.30pm. OMR got a good amount of rain, clocking 40mm.

Weather bloggers said more rain is expected due to an upper air circulation and convergence of wind from north west over northern parts of the state.

Rain on Tuesday night left about six streets in Madipakkam’s Srinivasa Nagar waterlogged, forcing residents to wade through them on Wednesday. Potholes on the streets compounded the residents’ woes.

The problem for residents of more than 200 houses in the area began in May when Metrowater began laying water pipelines. Now, people on Brindhavan Street, Sivaprakasam Street, Srinivasa Road, Ramnagar North and two others, under corporation wards 168 and 169 and very close to Velachery, are struggling.

Srikumar Balakrishnan, a resident, said Metrowater should speed up the storm water drain work and repair the road as soon as possible. “Tuesday’s showers were not that heavy but we are facing a lot of problems. So, we are worried what the situation would be during the upcoming monsoon. At least the agencies involved should take up temporary interventions to avoid water stagnation,” he said.

Ashok Jain, another resident of the low-lying area, said, “We have officially been issued drainage and water connections, but we are yet to get them. All sewage flows on to the roads. Whenever it rains, water stagnates on the streets.

Several residents complained to officials of the corporation and Metrowater, but no action was taken till Wednesday night. Neither motors nor any other equipment were brought in to remove the stagnant water, residents said.

The 8.6mm rain recorded at Meenambakkam weather station on Friday may be the start of another round of showers as meteorologists have forecast thunderstorms with light rain for the next two days. Bloggers said the intensity and frequency of rain may increase after September 20 and many parts of the state, including coastal areas like Chennai and neighbouring districts, are likely to receive good spells.

For the next 48 hours, the IMD has forecast thunderstorms with light rain over some areas in the city and the neighbourhood, while the sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 36°C and 26°C.

While a few places in south Tamil Nadu and delta districts are expected to receive thunderstorm with rain of varying intensity between September 19 and 21, the IMD has forecast thunderstorms with heavy rain over northern Tamil Nadu districts like Tiruvannnamalai, Vellore, Ranipet and Tiruvallur on September 22.

“This is due to the weak westerlies which will allow the entry of easterlies that may lead to wind convergence and convective spells,” a meteorologist said.

Since June 1, Nungambakkam has recorded 503.4mm of rain and Meenambakkam 436.9mm, which are 118.1mm and 13.5mm in excess. Chennai subdivision has recorded 431mm so far in the June-September season against a normal 397.4mm, an 8% excess.

Blogger Pradeep John said there is a possibility of rain in the city and neighbouring districts as well as interior districts during the last 10 days of September due to favourable wind conditions. “In Chennai, day temperatures may be around 34°C or 35°C but the relative humidity may be high. There are chances of rain almost daily in the evening or late nights if convergence shifts from interior parts of the state,” he said.

Rain lashed many of the southern districts late on Friday and Saturday. Thirupuvanam in Sivaganga district received 120 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours ending 8am on Saturday. Torrential showers accompanied by heavy winds brought down branches of trees in many places in the southern districts. An electric pole at Sokkanathanpatti in Thirumangalam snapped in the wind and rain, plunging the area into darkness. Similarly, many parts of Madurai, and Kadachanendal witnessed power outages for many hours.

Rain that lashed Madurai from Saturday afternoon left many places such as Tallakulam Main Road opposite to the Tamukkam grounds, Periyar bus stand, Masi Streets and many other places inundated. Many of the city roads turned slushy and muddy. People waded through knee-deep water in many places such as K Pudur.

While paddy procurement centres were opened in many villages, bags of paddy stacked in the open by the farmers were damaged in the rain. Farmers said that these grains would sprout if immediate steps were not taken to dry them. Madurai received an average rainfall of 21.64 in the last 24 hours, with Idayapatti in the district receiving the heaviest rainfall of 75 mm. This was followed by Kallikudi (69 mm) and Chittampatti (40 mm). Sivaganga received an average rainfall of 34.81 mm, with Thirupuvanam receiving 120 mm, the highest rainfall in the region on Friday. Theni district received an average rainfall of 15.72 mm, and two dams, Manjalaru and Sothuparai in the district, started overflowing due to heavy rain. Dindigul district received an average rainfall of 16.55 mm and Kodaikanal Boat Club recorded the highest rainfall of 41 mm. The other southern districts also received moderate to heavy rainfall on Saturday.
