The city will continue to receive thunderstorms and moderate rain at a few places on Monday.

An IMD forecast said the sky condition will likely be cloudy, with thunderstorms and rain in some areas.

The city received heavy rain on Sunday evening. Nungambakkam recorded 20.6mm, Meenambakkam recorded 23 mm, Anna University 16mm, Taramani 14.5mm, MRC Nagar 5.5mm rain till 7.30pm. OMR got a good amount of rain, clocking 40mm.

Weather bloggers said more rain is expected due to an upper air circulation and convergence of wind from north west over northern parts of the state.

Rain on Tuesday night left about six streets in Madipakkam’s Srinivasa Nagar waterlogged, forcing residents to wade through them on Wednesday. Potholes on the streets compounded the residents’ woes.

The problem for residents of more than 200 houses in the area began in May when Metrowater began laying water pipelines. Now, people on Brindhavan Street, Sivaprakasam Street, Srinivasa Road, Ramnagar North and two others, under corporation wards 168 and 169 and very close to Velachery, are struggling.

Srikumar Balakrishnan, a resident, said Metrowater should speed up the storm water drain work and repair the road as soon as possible. “Tuesday’s showers were not that heavy but we are facing a lot of problems. So, we are worried what the situation would be during the upcoming monsoon. At least the agencies involved should take up temporary interventions to avoid water stagnation,” he said.

Ashok Jain, another resident of the low-lying area, said, “We have officially been issued drainage and water connections, but we are yet to get them. All sewage flows on to the roads. Whenever it rains, water stagnates on the streets.

Several residents complained to officials of the corporation and Metrowater, but no action was taken till Wednesday night. Neither motors nor any other equipment were brought in to remove the stagnant water, residents said.

A Metrowater official work under a water supply scheme project was on in the area. “We will complete it by July 2022,” he said, adding that roads and drains can be laid only after that.

Some of these roads have storm water drains but are blocked in many locations. “We understand they are undertaking a project, but they should have planned it properly,” said Ashok Jain. “On Wednesday, we had to wade through water after getting dressed and given the Covid situation, if we fall sick, it’s added trouble.”

The 8.6mm rain recorded at Meenambakkam weather station on Friday may be the start of another round of showers as meteorologists have forecast thunderstorms with light rain for the next two days. Bloggers said the intensity and frequency of rain may increase after September 20 and many parts of the state, including coastal areas like Chennai and neighbouring districts, are likely to receive good spells.

For the next 48 hours, the IMD has forecast thunderstorms with light rain over some areas in the city and the neighbourhood, while the sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 36°C and 26°C.

While a few places in south Tamil Nadu and delta districts are expected to receive thunderstorm with rain of varying intensity between September 19 and 21, the IMD has forecast thunderstorms with heavy rain over northern Tamil Nadu districts like Tiruvannnamalai, Vellore, Ranipet and Tiruvallur on September 22.

“This is due to the weak westerlies which will allow the entry of easterlies that may lead to wind convergence and convective spells,” a meteorologist said.

Since June 1, Nungambakkam has recorded 503.4mm of rain and Meenambakkam 436.9mm, which are 118.1mm and 13.5mm in excess. Chennai subdivision has recorded 431mm so far in the June-September season against a normal 397.4mm, an 8% excess.

Blogger Pradeep John said there is a possibility of rain in the city and neighbouring districts as well as interior districts during the last 10 days of September due to favourable wind conditions. “In Chennai, day temperatures may be around 34°C or 35°C but the relative humidity may be high. There are chances of rain almost daily in the evening or late nights if convergence shifts from interior parts of the state,” he said.

Rain lashed many of the southern districts late on Friday and Saturday. Thirupuvanam in Sivaganga district received 120 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours ending 8am on Saturday. Torrential showers accompanied by heavy winds brought down branches of trees in many places in the southern districts. An electric pole at Sokkanathanpatti in Thirumangalam snapped in the wind and rain, plunging the area into darkness. Similarly, many parts of Madurai, and Kadachanendal witnessed power outages for many hours.

Rain that lashed Madurai from Saturday afternoon left many places such as Tallakulam Main Road opposite to the Tamukkam grounds, Periyar bus stand, Masi Streets and many other places inundated. Many of the city roads turned slushy and muddy. People waded through knee-deep water in many places such as K Pudur.

While paddy procurement centres were opened in many villages, bags of paddy stacked in the open by the farmers were damaged in the rain. Farmers said that these grains would sprout if immediate steps were not taken to dry them. Madurai received an average rainfall of 21.64 in the last 24 hours, with Idayapatti in the district receiving the heaviest rainfall of 75 mm. This was followed by Kallikudi (69 mm) and Chittampatti (40 mm). Sivaganga received an average rainfall of 34.81 mm, with Thirupuvanam receiving 120 mm, the highest rainfall in the region on Friday. Theni district received an average rainfall of 15.72 mm, and two dams, Manjalaru and Sothuparai in the district, started overflowing due to heavy rain. Dindigul district received an average rainfall of 16.55 mm and Kodaikanal Boat Club recorded the highest rainfall of 41 mm. The other southern districts also received moderate to heavy rainfall on Saturday.

BJP leaders, including several Union ministers, hit out at West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday for skipping a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Cyclone Yaas, with BJP president J P Nadda accusing her of “murdering constitutional ethos and the culture of cooperative federalism”.

Senior BJP leaders launched sharp attack on her, with Union home minister Amit Shah accusing her of putting “arrogance above public welfare”, while defence minister Rajnath Singh described her conduct as shocking and painful.

“This kind of behaviour with the prime minister, who arrived in the state with a sense of helping people of Bengal in the time of disaster, is painful. This is an unfortunate example of keeping political differences above public service and constitutional duties, which harms the basic spirit of India’s federal system,” Singh said.

Shah tweeted, “Mamata Didi’s conduct today is an unfortunate low. Cyclone Yaas has affected several common citizens and the need of the hour is to assist those affected. Sadly, Didi has put arrogance above public welfare and today’s petty behaviour reflects that.”

Nadda said Modi holds the principle of cooperative federalism “very sacred” and has been actively working with all chief ministers irrespective of their party affiliation to give relief to people but unsurprisingly, he added, Banerjee’s tactics and petty politics have once again come to haunt the people of Bengal. The current ‘low pressure area’ over Bay of Bengal is very likely to intensify into a “very severe cyclonic storm” on May 25 and will reach north Bay of Bengal near West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha and Bangladesh coasts around May 26 morning, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its update on Saturday.

The landfall of the cyclone, named ‘Yaas’, is expected around May 26 evening.

Its intensity will, however, not be like cyclone ‘Tauktae’ which hit the western coast earlier this week.

“A ‘low pressure area’ has formed over east central Bay of Bengal on May 22 morning. It is very likely to concentrate into a ‘depression’ over east-central Bay of Bengal by May 23 morning… It is very likely to cross West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha & Bangladesh coasts around evening of May 26,” said the IMD.

Issuing a warning, it said, “The fishermen are advised not to venture into central Bay of Bengal from May 23-25 and into north Bay of Bengal and along & off West Bengal–Odisha-–Bangladesh coasts from May 24-26. Those who are out in the deep sea of eastcentral & adjoining northeast Bay of Bengal are advised to return to the coast.”

Rain that lashed some parts of the city and its suburbs on Thursday evening might stay with us for the next two days. The showers on Thursday, accompanied by strong breeze, caused power cuts in some neighbourhoods.

Southern suburbs received the maximum rain on Thursday - Meenambakam 2.3cm, West Tambaram 2.8cm, OMR 3.4cm, Chembarambakkam 1.6cm, while areas in the city such as Nandanam and Villivakkam recorded 1.2cm and 1.5cm rain. Many neighbourhoods including Aminjikarai, Anna Nagar, Nungambakkam, Korattur and parts of North Chennai received a short yet good spell of rain. There were power cuts for more than three hours in Pazhavanthangal, Pallikaranai, Keelkattalai, Medavakkam, Maduravoyal and Porur.

A senior official with Tangedco said they had cut power as precaution for field workers to check if there were any low-lying wires in the suburbs. “There were no cuts in most parts of the city.”

Chances of rain in the next 48 hours are high due to convergence of sea breeze and land breeze ahead of formation of a low pressure in the Bay of Bengal. An IMD forecast for the city said, “The sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy. Light rain is likely to occur in some areas.”

The southwest monsoon will make its onset and a low pressure that may turn into a cyclone will also develop over the south Andaman Sea by May 22. The state government has issued an alert asking fishermen to return to shore by May 23. However, the low pressure and the possible cyclone may not bring much rain to Chennai once the system takes shape and starts to move towards West Bengal.

The city may not have received rain from Cyclone Tauktae, but its strength and intensity may continue to bring in strong seabreeze to the land, resulting in a slight dip in temperatures at least for the next two days. While weathermen have forecast slightly below normal temperature, weather bloggers said the city may have chances of rainfall towards the end of the week before another system may form closer to Andaman island.

For the next 48 hours, IMD has forecast Chennai city and suburbs to have maximum and minimum temperatures around 36 deg C and 28 deg C, with partly cloudy skies.

Strong seabreeze or easterlies had been keeping day temperatures below normal for much of May, considered peak summer season. Since the weather system intensified over Arabian Sea last week, it has been pulling winds from Bay of Bengal over the land. This has helped keep a check on day temperatures.

On Monday, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 35.8 deg C and 37.5 deg C, which are 1.7 deg C and 0.9 deg C below normal. The average temperature for the month of May is 37.1 deg C.

“Easterlies may continue to be present through the day keeping day temperatures near normal or slightly below normal,” a meteorologist said.

“There are chances of rainfall in the city between May 20 and 22,” weather blogger Pradeep John said.

Residents in soime parts of the city woke up on Monday morning to surprise light spells of rain.

While IMD has not forecast rainfall over the city for the next few days, weather bloggers said wind convergence closer to coastal areas may continue to bring isolated light showers over a few areas in the morning. For southe TN, IMD said a cyclonic circulation could bring heavy rain and thunderstorms over the next four days.

For the next 48 hours, Chennai and its suburbs will have partly cloudy skies with maximum and minimum temperatures around 35 degrees C and 26 degrees C.

While the last few days had seen near normal day and night temperatures in the city, localities in west Chennai such as Koyambedu, Anna Nagar, Valasaravakkam, Virugambakkam and Porur recorded light spells on Monday. Both Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam stations, however, recorded zero rainfall.

While a persistent strong easterly is keeping a check on day temperatures in the day, meteorologists said an early morning convergence of opposing winds closer to coastal areas brought drizzles over a few localities.

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over a few places in Western Ghat districts along with south and central parts of the state till April 16. Heavy rainfall is also likely over Coimbatore, Theni and Nilgiris. This is due to a cyclonic circulation over south Tamil Nadu and neighbourhood.

“Chennai may receive spells in the morning for the next two weeks due to convergence close to the coast. But it is more like drizzles or very light rainfall that may not last more than a few minutes,” said blogger Pradeep John.

Heat wave conditions are likely to prevail over isolated pockets of Tamil Nadu for the next four days, the India Meteorological Department has said.

While private forecasters said Meenambakkam station could breach the 40-degree mark again in the first week of April, weather bloggers said temperatures in the city could drop to normal by April 3 and in other districts by April 5.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) said temperatures are likely to shoot up by three to five degrees above normal till April 4. The rise in temperature would be more pronounced in north Tamil Nadu districts including Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengelpet, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi and Cuddalore as well as interior districts like Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, Karur, Trichy , Perumbalur, Ariyalur and Mayiladuthurai. Madurai, Sivagangai and Pudukottai, IMD said.

“Heatwave conditions are likely to occur in isolated pockets. Farmers, poll candidates, voters and traffic policemen are advised not to work outdoors or organise rallies between 12 noon and 4pm,” IMD said. The change in the wind direction and the delay in the onset of sea breeze in the city is due to the presence of a low pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal which is expected to intensify further and move towards Myanmar.

Chennai and its suburbs are likely to record a maximum and minimum temperatures of 39 degree C and 28 degree C for the next 48 hours, with sky conditions likely to be clear.

“This week is going to be very hot and humid for Chennai and mercury is likely to stay above 40 deg C for the next four-five days,” said Skymet Weather.

The persistent hot and dry land breeze moving into Tamil Nadu set mercury soaring and broke temperature records in Chennai and Trichy on Tuesday. While the Meenambakkam station recorded an all-time high 41.3 deg C, Trichy registered 40.9 deg C, highest at least in the past 50 years. In total, temperatures in six cities and towns crossed 40 deg C on Tuesday.

Weathermen said northwesterly winds or land breeze would continue to move into the state keeping the temperatures high for the next five days.

The IMD has forecast dry weather over Tamil Nadu till April 3. The agency said the maximum temperature is likely to be two to three degrees Celsius above normal at isolated places over north Tamil Nadu on April 2 and 3.

N Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, IMD, said the presence of two systems over Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal has caused the change in wind direction bringing hot land breeze into the state.

On Tuesday, Vellore recorded 41.3 deg C, Tiruthani 41 deg C, Trichy 40.9 deg C, Madurai AP 40.5 deg C and Karur Paramathi 40.2 deg C.

Trichy had recorded 40.6 deg C on March 27, 2001, and 40.6 deg C on March 21, 1991. The all-time high is 42.2 deg C on March 26, 1892.

“Trichy’s 40.8 deg C is the highest at least since 1962,” said weather blogger Pradeep John.

The past few days had been dry, hot and glaringly bright though the mercury reading has hardly been different. But in a week’s time, that may change. Weathermen said temperatures may rise beyond 35 degrees C or 36 degrees C after equinox on March 20.

For the next 48 hours, though, Chennai and the rest of the state may experience the same dry and hot weather.The IMD has forecast temperatures to hover at 33 degrees C maximum and 24 degrees C minimum in the city and the suburbs for the next 48 hours. The skies may be partly cloudy during the afternoon and clear thereafter. This, meteorologists said was due to the dry easterlies flowing into the land making the days feel dry and hot as humidity drops due to lack of moisture in the air. This makes the sweat evaporate faster in the body which then feels the heat despite temperatures being not so high.

“Right now, you will feel the heat only when you step out. It is only when the temperature is about 37 degrees C, you will start feeling hot even when you are indoors,” N Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, IMD, said earlier.

On Friday and Saturday, the maximum temperatures were 0.1 degrees C/0.2 degrees C below normal, but humidity was at 61% and 77% making the day shining bright and hot with clear skies.

Bloggers said the weather models indicate a spike in temperatures post the equinox, when the Sun crosses the equator, leaving length of day and night almost equal, and begins its journey to the northern hemisphere from the south. Blogger Pradeep John said temperatures may hover at 35 degrees C till March 21 and models indicate a rise to 38 degrees C in the past 10 days of this month in the city and the suburbs with certain times of the days experiencing hot land breeze or northwesterly winds.

“What we are seeing now is not summer. There could be a rise at month-end which is normal. South and southwestern TN may see mango showers or pre-monsoon showers in the last 10 days of the month,” he said. After a few days of light showers in some parts of southern districts, IMD has forecast dry weather to prevail across the state till March 17.
