Naresh Goyal implicated in Canara Bank's Rs 538-Crore fraud, ED alleges fund diversion

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has submitted its charge sheet in the Canara Bank's Rs 538-crore fraud case naming Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal, his wife Anita Goyal, and four other companies, officials said.

The charge sheet, filed before a Special Court, came two months after Goyal's arrest on 1 September in the Canara Bank complaint of November 2022 alleging that loans given for the airline were allegedly diverted for personal expenses and clearing his private liabilities.

The matter is likely to come up for further hearing on Wednesday.

The bank's complaint to the CBI in early May - based on a forensic audit of the company for the period April 2011-June 2019 - led to the ED case on 10 May under the PMLA as the money-laundering angle emerged in the alleged scam.

After Jet Airways started defaulting on repayments, Canara Bank declared it as a non-performing asset in 2019 and the ED claimed that the loan amount of Rs 538-crore was diverted and siphoned off.

Goyal, 74, was arrested by the ED on 1 September, and is currently lodged at the Arthur Road Central Jail in judicial custody, even as he has made an application challenging his "illegal" arrest in the case.

The ED has contended that the Goyal allegedly diverted company's funds, appointing his family members as employees, paying salaries of a company floated by his daughter, paying huge amounts of professional and consultancy fees, dubious expenses, etc to the tune of around Rs 1,000-crore, and unaccounted transactions with payments made to foreign accounts.

Indian Railway: Lakhs of passengers travel in Indian Railways every day, in such a situation, heavy fine is imposed by the Railways on the passengers traveling without tickets. But according to railway rules, you can travel 8 times on one ticket.

New Delhi: With one train ticket, you can travel only from one station to another, this is believed by most of the railway passengers. But, if we tell you that on one ticket you can travel to 8 different stations,

You can board different trains, so you might not believe it at once. But this is true for sixteen annas. Railways also issues a special ticket called Circular Journey Ticket, on which one can travel to multiple stations.

Generally, travelers going on pilgrimage or sightseeing take advantage of this facility of the Railways. Circular tickets can be purchased for travel in any class.

You cannot buy circular journey tickets directly from the ticket counter. For this, one has to first apply and give information about one’s travel route to the railway officials.

To book this ticket, passengers will have to keep in mind that the place where their journey starts should also end there.

Benefit of circular ticket

If you are going on a long tour then you do not need to get tickets from different stations. By purchasing circular journey tickets as per your schedule, you can avoid the hassle of buying tickets again and again.

Also your precious time is not wasted. If you buy tickets at different stations, they become expensive. Telescopic rates apply on circular journey tickets, which are much lower than regular point-to-point fares.

For example, you can take a circular journey ticket from New Delhi to Kanyakumari from Northern Railway. Your journey will start from New Delhi and will end back in New Delhi.

You will reach Kanya Kumari via Mathura via Mumbai Central – Marmagoa – Bangalore City – Mysore – Bangalore City – Udhagamandalam – Thiruvananthapuram Central and will return to New Delhi via the same route. The circular ticket made for this journey of 7,550 kilometers remains valid for 56 days.

After planning the journey, you can contact the Divisional Commercial Manager of the division or the Station Managers of some major stations from where you are going to start the journey.

Later the Divisional Manager or Station Officer will calculate the cost of tickets based on your itinerary.

Now he will inform the station manager about the cost of your ticket through a form.

You can purchase circular journey tickets by presenting the form at the booking office of the station from where you are going to start your journey.

After purchasing circular journey tickets, you will have to contact the reservation office to reserve seats for different points of your journey.

You will then be issued reserve tickets for your journey.

HYDERABAD: A division bench of the Telangana High Court, comprising Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice NV Shravan Kumar, has issued a bailable warrant directing R Manjula, the tahsildar of Alampur mandal in Jogulamba Gadwal district, to appear before the court on November 10 for her alleged involvement in the issuance of a fake residential certificate to an MBBS aspirant.

The case revolves around Singotam Vennela, an aspiring MBBS/BDS student who sought admission in a medical college in the State for the academic year 2023-24. Vennela challenged the decision of the Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences to reject her request for local candidate status.
The tahsildar issued a residential certificate stating that the student had been a resident of Door No. 23-43, Alampur, Jogulamba Gadwal district, Telangana, for the past 18 years. However, the court had raised serious doubts regarding the authenticity of the certificate, prompting an investigation into the veracity of the petitioner’s claim of being a local candidate.

During the previous court proceedings, the bench had directed Manjula to explain the issuance of the controversial certificate within two weeks. Despite the clear directive, the tahsildar failed to respond to the court directive. Expressing its disappointment and concern over the tahsildar’s non-compliance with the court’s directive, the division bench issued a bailable warrant for her appearance in court on November 10.

New Delhi: From the 2024-25 academic session, both government and private medical colleges in the country will be rated based on the quality of education they provide.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) signed an MoU with the Quality Council of India (QCI) for assessing ratings of the medical institutions in July. Currently, only government medical colleges are bound to participate in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Dr Yogendra Malik, member of the NMC's Ethics and Medical Registration Board said on Tuesday.

"QCI provides a mechanism for independent third-party assessment of products, services and it aims to promote quality through national accreditation of testing, inspection and certification bodies which are internationally recognized," he said.

"This is the first time that medical colleges will be assessed and ranked based on several parameters. The initiative will bring in accountability, and adherence to high standards and help students choosing the right medical college," he said.

The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC is responsible for carrying out inspections for granting permission for new medical colleges, increase of MBBS/PG/super-speciality seats, and renewal of permission for existing medical colleges.
