Microsoft Copilot users can now access GPT-4 Turbo for free

Microsoft Copilot users can now access GPT-4 Turbo for free

OpenAI's most advanced language model, GPT-4 Turbo, is now available for free via Microsoft Copilot.

Bengaluru | Updated: March 14, 2024 16:38 IST

Microsoft has extended access to GPT-4 Turbo for every Copilot user, which was previously limited to Pro users. Company executive Mikhail Parakhin recently confirmed this via a post on X and wrote, “After quite some work, GPT4-Turbo replaced GPT-4 in the Copilot free tier. Pro users can still choose the older model if they prefer (there is a toggle).”

With this development, those who use the free tier of Copilot on Windows PCs or on smartphones (both Android and iOS) can access OpenAI’s most capable language model by selecting the conversation style as creative or precise. Copilot Pro users have the option to switch back to GPT-4 using the toggle.

GPT-4 Turbo is the most capable large language model by OpenAI, which supports enhanced multimodal functionality along with larger context windows. It is also cheaper to run compared to GPT-4. It was first announced back in November 2023 with new capabilities like knowledge up to April 2023, functional calling updates, and JASON mode for improved coding capability. It can accept up to more than 300 pages of text prompt (128k context window).

As it is three times cheaper for input tokens and two times cheaper for output tokens, it makes sense for Microsoft to offer the latest model, which costs a lot less to run and also offers better features and experience to end-users.

Microsoft Copilot Pro currently costs $20 (Rs 2,000) a month, offering priority access to GPT-4 and GPT-4 Turbo (minimal downtime compared to the free tier). It can also generate images and answer questions faster. For users with Microsoft 365 subscriptions, Copilot Pro can add AI capabilities to services like Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Internships cancelled, 125 MBBS students asked to vacate hostels

Internships cancelled, 125 MBBS students asked to vacate hostels

Mar 14, 2024, 04.24 AM IST

Gurgaon: A total of 125 MBBS students of ESIC Medical College and Hospital in Faridabad have been asked to vacate their hostel rooms without any notice after their internship proposals were cancelled.

At any govt medical college, MBBS students must work as interns if they apply for an MD or higher degree course. Following a protest by the students, the dean of the college said they could not be considered for internships because they were not registered with the medical association yet.

On March 1, the academic branch issued internship orders after the graduates passed their MBBS exam but withdrew it within a few hours.

Deputy dean Dr Anil Kumar Pandey said that the internships were given to graduating students during the pandemic upon instructions from the Haryana Medical Council.

“That was a time of crisis. But now that we are returning to normalcy, we cannot continue with the same. The council in Sept 2023 released an order restricting the practice. From this batch, we are adopting the standard method of approving internship applications only after registration. The academic branch mistakenly issued the letter, but it was soon withdrawn,” said Dr Pandey.

“All our seniors were allowed to go straight to internships after their degrees. Why are we being discriminated against? They are making us leave our lodging too. We were never told about any new rule of discontinuing the internship,” a student said

Pandey mentioned that the college facilitates registration process with the state medical council, so that students don’t have to travel to Panchkula.

He added, “The students wrongly mentioned that they were registered with the state medical council in their grievance letter. They need to obtain the provisional registration receipt to be considered as practitioners.”

The management said that since the protesting alumni haven’t registered themselves as practitioners yet, they are neither students at the college nor interns. Therefore, they cannot be allowed to stay in the hostel. “Once they register, they will be allotted interns’ hostel on application, which we have made about 500m away from the campus,” the official said.

Pandey added that by Wednesday morning, 70 graduates had submitted their documents for approval, which will be facilitated by the college.

EC uploads electoral bonds data shared by SBI on its website

TIMESOFINDIA.COM | Mar 14, 2024, 08.14 PM IST

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Thursday uploaded electoral bonds data as shared by the State Bank of India, on its website.
The State Bank of India (SBI) had submitted a compliance affidavit to the Supreme Court on Wednesday, confirming that it has provided the Election Commission of India (EC) with comprehensive details regarding the electoral bonds scheme.

SBI had furnished information including the date of purchase, the names of the purchasers, and the denominations of the electoral bonds.

Electoral bonds have been a subject of intense debate and scrutiny, as they are used by individuals and corporations to anonymously donate money to political parties.

The Supreme Court had earlier directed SBI to share detailed information with the Election Commission to ensure transparency and accountability in political funding. In addition to the details of the purchasers, SBI has also provided the EC with information regarding the date of encashment of the electoral bonds and the names of the political parties that received the donations.

This move is aimed at enhancing the transparency of political contributions and ensuring that the funds are traceable and accounted for.
