Mannargudi:05.12.2021

A 22-year-old college student who fell unconscious on the road after an accident got his life back, thanks to a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) done by a nurse on the spot in Mannargudi on Friday. The video has gone viral.

M Vanaja, 39, of government headquarters hospital at Mannargudi was travelling in a car with her family from Madhukkur to Mannargudi on her weekly off when she saw the victim lying head down on the road near Lekkanampettai on Madhukkur road. Vasanth, a polytechnic student of Karuvakurichi who was riding a bike, had rammed into a herd of goats, skidded and fallen down.

Vanaja got off the car, cleared through the crowd which was looking at the man, and without any hesitation performed CPR on the youth. “He showed signs of life after 30 seconds of pressing. Usually, we require oxygen facility while applying CPR. In this case, I was ready to give him oral breathing but the youth himself breathed,” she told TOI. She said she continued the process for two more minutes. “Soon, he caught my hand due to the discomfort of pressing and opened his eyes,” Vanaja said. A 108 ambulance vehicle reached the spot and in the next few minutes Vasanth walked to it with Vanaja holding his hand. He was admitted to Thanjavur medical college hospital.

As he hit his face and the forehead on the road, he became unconscious due to the shock. So we referred him for medical examination,” Vanaja said.

As the photographs and video of Vanaja saving the youth in the golden hour went viral, netizens overwhelmed her with wishes. A nursing diploma holder, she has been a contractual employee for the past one year and had recently undergone training in Tamil Nadu Accident and Emergency care initiative (TAEI) in Trichy.

“The youth is safe now because of Vanaja’s timely action. The medical examination showed he has no life threatening injuries,” said Dr N Vijayakumar, chief medical officer of the hospital where Vanaja works.

Meanwhile, a social service organisation called ‘Nesakaram’ of Mannargudi bestowed Vanaja with the title “Nightingale of Mannargudi” at the hospital on Saturday. The outfit appealed to the state government to regularise her job.

Mangaluru:07.10.2021

A 19-year-old first-year nursing student was found hanging in the hostel of a city hospital early Tuesday. In a note left behind, Nina, from Kadumeni village in Kasaragod stated that she was unwilling to “burden” her family with her education expenses, adding that her mother was not being paid regularly due to the pandemic and she did not want to add to her difficulties.

Sources said Nina had enrolled for the 2020-21 BSc nursing course and was worried about being able to continue her studies as her mother was single-handedly running the household. She was found hanging in the hostel bathroom and was rushed to a private hospital but couldn’t be saved.

“Since there were several allegations and suspicions about her death, I visited the college, interacted with her roommates at the hostel and met her parents and brother-inlaw,” city police commissioner N Shashi Kumar said. An unnatural death report has been registered at the Mangaluru East police station. The investigating team recovered a note, in Malayalam, that was probably written a day before her death. A hospital staff member who knows the language was asked to read it out.

In the note, Nina mentioned that ₹75,000 has been paid as fees and on paying the remaining amount, she would be provided with the uniform. Due to the pandemic, her mother’s salary was affected and Nina felt it would be tough for her family to meet her expenses under these circumstances, police said. Nina’s mother Jancy works as a deposit collection agent in a bank in Taliparamba.

Medical ethics, simulation find place in revamped nursing syllabus

Medical ethics, simulation find place in revamped nursing syllabus

NEW DELHI, SEPTEMBER 12, 2021 18:08 IST

Experts welcome major overhaul of B.Sc. Nursing curriculum, aimed at standardisation

India’s B.Sc (nursing programme) has undergone its first major overhaul after 1947, making it a competency-based nursing curriculum. To be implemented from January 2022, the revised curriculum has been standardised, updated and aimed at bringing in uniformity in nursing education across India.

Medical ethics has been introduced for the first time.

The new system now adopts a credit-based, semester pattern with more emphasis on acquiring competency in each area of study. Also, forensic nursing and nursing informatics have been introduced in the syllabus.

Dr. Satendra Singh who teaches in a medical college and is a guest faculty at Florence Nightingale Nursing School at GTB Hospital, said the Indian Nursing Council (INC) has revised, and developed the syllabus under Section 16 of the Indian Nursing Council (INC) Act, to ensure uniform standard of nursing education in the country.

“The revised syllabus, which is the first major overhaul after 1947, has the word “dignity’ in at least six places which is a welcome addition and the introduction of ethics is also an enhanced addition,” said Dr. Singh.

Disability ignored

He added that unfortunately the revised curriculum does not include disability rights as well as disability competencies.

“It still includes the pejorative expressions ‘handicapped’, ‘mentally challenged’ and physically challenged. The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act mandates inclusion of disability rights in the higher education. Curriculum also excludes gender expression and identity components which Transgender Persons Act mandates be included,” he said.

Member of the INC and Professor (Dr.) Roy K. George said the changes will add quality and standardisation to the programme.

He said that based on the new curriculum, simulation based training is given specific importance in practical (10% of the practical are in the simulation lab).

Only Science students

“So students will go to the clinical area after the compulsory training in the simulation laboratories. Also the gazette does not permit the admission for non-science background students for B.Sc. Nursing program and minimum qualifying marks for entrance test shall be 50%. In the university theory paper pattern (For 75 marks), multiple choice questions have been added,” said Dr. George.

He added that internal assessment guidelines will now see continuous assessment based on attendance, written assignments, seminars, microteaching, individual presentation and group project, work and reports.

“The new system has also brought in mandatory modules for each specialisation and the student has to pass in all mandatory modules placed within courses and the pass mark for each module is 50%,” he said.

As per the new norms, colleges of nursing should mandatorily have 100 bedded parent or own hospitals. The trustee/ member/ director of the trust or society or company would not allow the hospital to be treated parent/ affiliated hospital to any other nursing institution and will be for a minimum 30 years. The beds of parent hospital shall be in one Unitary Hospital i.e. in the same building/same campus.

The revised rules also state that no institution or university will modify the syllabi prescribed by the Council for a course or program. However they can add units or subjects if required.

“It is mandatory that an institution shall have its own building within two years of its establishment,” the revised rule states.

CHENNAI: Over 100 staff nurses who were recruited for Covid-19 duty on a six-month contract and posted at the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital protested at the Directorate of Medical Education campus on Monday after allegedly being denied accommodation and food by the hospital management.

The staff nurses alleged 198 staff nurses were posted on Covid-19 duty at the KMCH during the peak of the pandemic. They were provided accommodation and food in a hotel. But the management suddenly asked them to vacate the hotel from Monday.

They assembled in front of the matron office and demanded that they be provided accommodation and food as they have nowhere to go since the instructions were given suddenly and they hail from other districts. Later, they moved to the DME campus and demanded that the higher officials intervene.

Speaking to TNIE, S Rajesh, State General Secretary, MRB Covid-19 Nurses Association, alleged that the hospital has been doing this repeatedly. “All other hospitals are giving accommodation and food. Since the number of Covid-19 cases came down, the nurses are being treated as unwanted.” Rajesh also said the government should give them job security.

They are repeatedly given six-month extensions, and are not sure when this will be stopped. A senior doctor at the hospital said, “We can give accommodation only to staff nurses on Covid-19 duty. Now, only 25 per cent of the staff are utilised and the rest should arrange their own accommodation and food. We are acting on instructions from higher officials.”The nurses dispersed after officials at the DME promised them accommodation and food for now.

To clear the position vis-a-vis nursing institutions, the Indian Nursing Council (INC) has to WebHost the full order of the Supreme Court in Civil Appeals No.12759-12761/2017 and the link to the website hosted by the state government, containing the list of recognized institutions.

The high court passed this order recently while disposing of a petition filed by Karnataka State Association of the Management of Nursing and Allied Health Science Institutions and four nursing colleges.

Justice PS Dinesh Kumar said in the Civil Appeals the SC held INC has no authority to grant recognition to institutions imparting nursing courses and it has been restrained from publishing the material indicated therein on its website. The judge, however, added that in view of the admitted position that inspection can be conducted by INC, its right, to be placed in public domain, the institutions inspected by it, can’t be curtailed.

“It would be appropriate for the INC to web-host the clear position emerging from the order passed by the Supreme Court. This can be achieved by directing the INC to first show the entire list of institutions recognised by the government on its website,” the judge added. The petitioners had moved court seeking removal of a list from INC website depicting as ‘recognised Institutions by the Karnataka State Nursing Council’ for 2019-20 and 2020-21. TNN

She has worked without a single-day off during Covid-19 pandemic. In fact, she was among the first in nursing staff at Central Gujarat’s biggest hospital — SSG Hospital — in Vadodara to handle a Covid-19 positive mother and her newborn when almost everyone feared the deadly virus.

Two years ago, when most wards were heavily waterlogged, she along with resident doctors and support staff ensured that the gynaecology and obstetrics department continued to function.

On September 15, her dedication to the profession will be recognized as President Ramnath Kovind will confer the prestigious National Florence Nightingale Award 2020 virtual on Bhanumati Gheewala fondly called sister Bhanuben.

The Indian Nursing Council, a statutory body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, confers the award to recognize the contribution of healthcare workers.

The 56-year-old head nurse performs her duty six days a week at the government hospital and on the seventh day she provides her voluntary services at Ramkrishna Mission to support their child welfare activities.

Bhanuben who joined as a nurse in 1988 underwent training in gynaecology speciality at Chandigarh in 2000 and finished Nurse Practitioner Midwives course in 2010.

She also kept upgrading herself. “For years, we had been following conventional methods. It was after a workshop on alternative birth positions in July 2019 that we started practicing birth positions featuring reclining, squatting or side-lying which have physiological and psychological advantages over the conventional posture,” said Bhanuben.

“It is indeed a matter of pride for entire SSG Hospital that our nursing staff Bhanuben has been selected for this prestigious award,” said professor Ranjan Aiyer, medical superintendent at SSG Hospital.

Nimhans staff protests nurse’s assault

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Bengaluru:07.09.2021

Several nurses and other employees of Nimhans staged a protest on Monday, condemning an alleged assault of a nurse by the head of clinical nursing services (incharge) at the institute.

With over 100 staffers part of the demonstration, patients faced inconvenience in the afternoon, said members of Nimhans employees’ association, which called for the protest.

On August 30, the nurse was allegedly manhandled by the head of clinical nursing services and a complaint was lodged against the officer at Siddapura police station.

AG Nagaraj, president of the employees’ association, said the institution was yet to take any action against the accused, who was also seen on campus on Monday. “It is inhuman to assault a colleague. Such attitude towards subordinate staff is objectionable. The act of manhandling a colleague is a criminal offence and officer must be suspended immediately,” said Nagaraj.

The competent authorities have initiated the suitable administrative procedure, said Nimhans authorities. However, they said functioning of the hospital was not affected. “The protest was not indefinite. The nurses came back to work and patient services were not hit,” said Nimhans medical superintendent Dr Muralidharan K.

Cops from Siddapura police station said a non-cognisable report was filed based on a complaint from the nurse. “With the court’s nod, we have registered an FIR against the head of clinical nursing services on charges of assaulting a nursing officer,” a cop said.

The All India Government Nurses’ Federation has written to the Union ministry of health and family welfare condemning the assault.

It is shocking that the head of clinical nursing services reportedly assaulted one of our nursing colleagues when she approached the former for redressal of serious grievances. Hassan: 08.08.2021

Over 100 nursing college students here, the majority from neighbouring Kerala, tested Covid positive in the past three days. Two are said to be in a critical condition at the district hospital.

This is a cause of concern for health officials and the government as Hassan town has become a Covid cluster with cases from three nursing colleges since Thursday. Except for a few, all the infected students are girls. On Thursday, 21 students from Nisarga Nursing College tested positive and 24 others came in contact with them. Of these 24, four tested positive on Saturday, health officials confirmed. All the 25 students are from the same college and stay in a PG accommodation.

After the outbreak, authorities tested around 1,800 students of all 10 nursing colleges in the town and over 100 were found infected. Of these, 90% are from Kerala and they had arrived in Hassan before July 27, an official said. On Friday, 37 students from Rajiv Nursing College and 24 students from Rathna Nursing College in Hassan town were infected and they’ve been isolated.

Officials are worried as students had gone to eateries and hotels in the past week. "Students in all hostels and paying guest houses will be tested. At first, students in colleges with more students will be tested from Monday", said District Health Officer Dr KM Sathish.

On Saturday, Hassan reported 129 fresh cases, which includes the students.

Fears of travellers from Kerala triggering an outbreak in the state hit home on Thursday when 21 students enrolled in a private nursing college in Hassan city tested positive for Covid-19.

The students, who arr ived a fortnight ago from their hometowns in Kerala, were staying in a paying guest facility. They have since been moved to another lodge where they have been isolated. Some two dozen other students who are primary contacts have also been isolated in the same facility.

The students are pursuing degree courses in the college located near Katihalli industrial area. A total of 45 students were staying in the PG facility located in KR Puram. All the infected students had arrived in Hassan sometime before July 26 to attend exams. They had furnished negative Covid-19 reports on arrival. Since none were inoculated, health department officials took the initiative and gave them all their first dose of Covishield.

“On Tuesday, a student who showed Covid symptoms was subjected to RT-PCR test. It confirmed the infection and tests were then conducted on the remaining students in the PG. Most of those infected are asymptomatic,” an official said.

The PG has been sealed and those infected and their primary contacts were moved to a private lodge near the centre of the city. Tests will be conducted on the primary contacts on Friday and Saturday.

“Our team visited all the 10 nursing colleges in the city on Thursday,” a health department official said.

Officials also said two students from Hassan city’s Home Science College also tested positive on Thursday. “We are thinking of testing all students and staff in all colleges,” said Dr KM Sathish, district health officer.

If one sees Rekha Brahmbhatt, the head nurse at the 1,200-bed Covid hospital on the Civil Hospital campus, one might not notice that behind the smiling face and tireless duty, she has endured excruciating kidney pain. She had also deferred her surgery. “My chronic kidney disease needed a surgery and stenting. I underwent an operation in February, but the pain was recurring,” said Brahmbhatt, a native of Gandhinagar. “I was advised to again undergo a surgery. I could not leave work, but took a day off and reported for duty on the second day.”

Working at the hospital for the past one year on Covid duty, Brahmbhatt manages ward data, nursing staff, and coordination with patients to understand their requirements. Nowadays, her primary role is to ascertain the number of beds available and conveying it to the authorities. “I may endure my pain, but we are most needed at this time when the pandemic is at its peak,” she said. “If we won’t work now, when will we?”
