Bulbul leaves city warm, rain may return next week

Tropical cyclone Bulbul moving towards West Bengal-Bangladesh has left Chennai warm and dry with daytime temperature peaking at a record 35.1°C. But all is not lost, as weathermen said monsoon rain might be back to Chennai by mid next week due to a low atmospheric pressure after the cyclone makes a landfall.

“We can expect some rainfall in the city from November 15 or 16 due to an easterly trough. Till then, the weather will be dry,” said N Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, IMD. Easterly trough is an elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure.

He said Bulbul might make landfall after weakening and was unlikely to influence the rainfall that might begin along the southeast coast including Chennai later next week.

IMD has forecast that the sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 33°C and 26°C for the next 48 hours in the city.

As Cyclone Bulbul is gathering strength over the bay pulling away all northeasterly winds, the city has been witnessing a change in wind direction with north-northwesterly winds or dry land breeze blowing towards the east coast leading to warmer day.

On Friday, the Nungambakkam station recorded 35.1°C and Meenambakkam registered 34.7°C, 5.4°C and 4.8°C above normal. The city’s temperature has never touched 35°C in November in the last10 years. The maximum daytime temperature for this month was 34.7°C recorded on November 5, 2016.

Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist at Skymet Weather, said after the cyclone made a landfall, there would be a change in wind direction once again as southeast coast of India including Chennai would get back the northeasterly winds resulting in rainfall. “But it may be only scattered rainfall, not heavy rain,” he said.

Bulbul is expected to make a landfall near the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast after weakening into a severe cyclonic storm from very severe cyclonic storm.

‘மஹா’ புயல்: குமரிக்கடலில் நிலைகொண்டிருந்த வலுவான காற்றழுத்தத் தாழ்வு பகுதியாக மேலும் வலுவடைந்து, காற்றழுத்தத் தாழ்வு மண்டலமாக மாறி, லட்சத்தீவு பகுதியில் நிலைகொண்டிருந்தது. இது கடந்த புதன்கிழமை மதியம் ஆழ்ந்த காற்றழுத்தத் தாழ்வு மண்டலமாகவும், அன்று மாலையில் புயலாகவும் வலுவடைந்தது. இந்தப் புயலுக்கு ‘மஹா’ என்று பெயரிடப்பட்டது. இந்த பெயரை ஓமன் நாடு பரிந்துரை செய்திருந்தது.

இந்தப் புயல், வியாழக்கிழமை மதியம் தீவிர புயலாக மாறியது. அடுத்த 24 மணி நேரத்தில் மிக தீவிர புயலாக மாறவுள்ளது. இதற்கிடையில், வடக்கு அந்தமான் பகுதியில் நவம்பா் 4-ஆம் தேதி குறைந்த காற்றழுத்தத் தாழ்வு பகுதி உருவாகவுள்ளது. இது காற்றழுத்த தாழ்வு மண்டலமாக வலுவடையவுள்ளது.

Rain may not dampen Diwali as experts predict dry weather

A near-dry spell may come as good news for city residents, as weather experts have forecast only traces of light rain, which may not dampen Diwali celebrations on Sunday. While IMD forecast light rain, private weather experts said rain may gain momentum in the coastal regions, including Chennai, from October 28.

The regional meteorological centre forecast that “the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy and light rain likely to occur in some areas” for the next 48 hours in the city.

Day temperature may reach 32°C, while the minimum may hover around 26°C.

Since the low pressure area, which was expected to bring heavy rain to Chennai, skipped the city and moved towards the Andhra Pradesh coast, IMD forecast light rain, while the city has been receiving only traces. On Friday, the Nungambakkam weather station recorded traces, while it remained dry in Meenambakkam.

According to the IMD’s weather inference on Friday, the low pressure area over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining area of south Odisha and west central Bay of Bengal has become less marked.

Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist, Skymet Weather, said with Cyclone Kyarr gathering strength over Arabian Sea, most parts of Tamil Nadu, particularly the coastal regions, have been experiencing dry westerly winds.

“We do not expect any significant rain at least for the next two days in Chennai. Most of the rain will be over Kerala, just like southwest monsoon,” he said.

But with the cyclone expected to move away from the Indian coast beginning Sunday, experts said sea breeze would start to set in over coastal Tamil Nadu from Diwali day.

But rain may pick up from Monday when a cyclonic circulation could form over the Sri Lankan coast and extend up to south Tamil Nadu.

“Next active spells of rain from sea should start on October 27-28,” said weather blogger Pradeep John in his online post.

Palawat said, “Chennai may see some rain on October 29 and 30. But as of now, there are no chances of a significant weather system forming over Bay of Bengal.”

After a few days of traces and light rain, experts said conditions may turn favourable for a cyclonic system to travel from the Philippines coast towards Bay of Bengal.

However, as per the present forecast, the system may skip Tamil Nadu and go towards the Andhra Pradesh coast.

A trough which is likely to intensify over the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring very heavy rain to the city starting Tuesday. Weather experts said the month is also expected to end with an excess rain both in Chennai and Tamil Nadu.

After registering 101.6mm of rain a day ago, the intensity of the spells of rain reduced with Nungambakkam recording 5.2mm and Meenambakkam 1.9mm.

Chances of rainfall over the State, particularly coastal areas may increase from Tuesday, according to the Meteorological Department.

N. Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said there was a possibility of upper air circulation forming over the Bay of Bengal next week. It was expected to move westwards towards Tamil Nadu. The system and convective activity may synchronise to bring fairly widespread rainfall across the State from Tuesday or Wednesday. This would mean up to 75% of the weather stations may get light to moderate rains.

Chennai, the Nilgiris and Kanniyakumari are among the districts that have recorded over 20% above average rainfall this southwest monsoon. Tirunelveli and Theni which received 95% and 71% more rains than normal for the season topped the chart of districts with excess rainfall.

Expect good rain from next week & after Sept 15: Experts

The city may have experienced dry weather for the last two days, but going by the weatherman’s forecast, there could be light to moderate rain in some parts for the next two days.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, “The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Light to moderate rain is likely to occur in some areas during evening or night.”

Days are cloudy but also a lot warmer. On Saturday, temperature rose to 36.1°C in Nungamakkam and 36°C in Meenambakkam, about 1.6°C and 1.3°C above normal.

Experts said good spells of rain could be expected beginning next week and after September 15, when the southwest monsoon may reach the break period season and eventually begin withdrawing.

If the city’s water crisis eased in the last few weeks, it’s because of the effect of the southwest monsoon that brought convective rain in excess of 21% to the city between June 1 and September 7.

Weather blogger Pradeep John said the rain this season improved groundwater levels.

“With great rains in August, the groundwater has improved in the city except for north Chennai regions of Madhavaram and Thiru-vi-ka Nagar where the rains were less. With good spells of rains expected in city from 9th to 17th September, we can expect further improvement of groundwater.”

The drought-prone areas of Polur and Kalasapakkam in Tiruvannamalai district and Vellore town received heavy rainfall on Friday night.

Water stagnation and power shutdowns disrupted life in most areas.

In Vellore, it rained for about three hours on Friday evening causing floods at several places. It soon turned into a downpour early on Saturday which has brought the temperature in Vellore down significantly since the last fortnight.

Water entered houses in Indira Nagar, Kansalpet, and Auxilium School in Katpadi. People had to spend sleepless nights because of the incessant downpour. In the past 24 hours, Vellore recorded the highest rainfall of 170 mm while Katpadi recorded 110 mm. “This is surely a boon to water-starved areas, but it highlighted lack of infrastructure in the municipal corporation areas,” said Selvam, a trader from Salavanpet. There were incessant rains in Alangayam, Ambur, Vaniyambadi, Arakkonam and Kaveripakkam. The average rainfall in the district was recorded to be 40.59 mm. In Tiruvannamalai district, Kalasapakkam received the highest rainfall of 190 mm.

The break-up of rainfall was given as Polur 100 mm, Tiruvannamalai 50 mm, Kilpennathur 60 mm, Chetpet 7.5 mm, Sathanur Dam 40.60 mm, and Chengam 40.40 mm. The average rainfall in the district was 58.88 mm.

Vellore district administration declared a holiday for schools and colleges due to rain on Saturday.

There were reports of heavy rain in many other districts, including Cuddalore, Ariyalur and Villupuram.

Cloudy skies, light rain this week

After a few spells of night rain, most parts of the city are likely to have a dry spell that may last a few days, while some parts may get light rain.

Though it did not rain on Saturday and Sunday, weather remained pleasant. On Sunday, Nungambakkam recorded maximum temperature of 34.1 degrees Celsius and minimum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius. Meenambakkam recorded maximum temperature of 33.6degrees Celsius and minimum temperature of 26.8 degrees Celsius.

The Met department forecast the next two days for cloudy skies. The forecast said: “The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Light rain is likely to occur in some areas.”

The dip in day temperature may bring down chances of rain at night, said a Met official. But some parts of the city may experience rain close to the next weekend.

Weather bloggers said there could be rain in the intervening night of July 31 and August 1. However, it is only a likelihood and conditions might change, said a Met official. An inference by the Met department shows “a cyclonic circulation over northwest Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood and a low pressure area likely during the next two to three days.” It is not likely to bring rain to the city, and may prevent rain by impacting moisture and wind pattern in the south.

Since Monday is likely to be cloudy, the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 35 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius respectively. The city received short spells of convective rain in June and July and is expected to get a few more spells in August. The city has received 247.5mm rain since June 1.

CHENNAI: Cloudy skies are likely in the city on Wednesday with chances of more showers. “The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Light to moderate rain is likely in some areas,” a Met department forecast said.

On Tuesday, the suburbs received more rain than the core areas. Different parts received rain ranging from drizzles to light rain with the sky remaining cloudy throughout the day. Chengalpet, Sriperumbudur, Mamallapuram and Ponneri received 1cm rain till 8.30am.

Nungambakkam recorded 1.6mm of rain and Meenambakkam 5.1mm. The day was cool and pleasant with a maximum temperature at 34.5°C in Nungambakkam and 34°C in Meenambakkam.

The rain was triggered by a cyclonic circulation lying between south Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu coast, a Met official said. “It is expected to continue for one more day,” he added.

With the monsoon weakening in Kerala, the convergence was expected in leeward region and Tamil Nadu will see convective rain, private weather blogger Pradeep John said, adding that such rain had been missing for the last three days because of upper air circulation.

The city received mild rain in the day on Monday after clouds moved in from the sea. This type of cloud movement, private weather bloggers said, is a rare occurrence in July. Usually, the city receives rain because of convective clouds triggered by the high temperature during the day.

The city has received 132.2mm rain since June 1 against the expected normal of 140.7mm, a deficit of 6%. It is expected to receive a few more spells of rain in August due to the break monsoon in the northern parts of the country.

Met predicts more rain in coming days

The city is expected to get some rain in the coming days, especially at night, due to convective activity triggered by high day temperature.

The Met department said in a forecast for Sunday that the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Light to moderate rain is likely to occur in some areas. Cloud formation is such that rain is expected in the evening or late night.

Many parts of the city received rain late on Friday night. Southern suburbs experienced heavy rain. Meenambakkam and Poonamallee recorded 2cm of rain while Anna University and Taramani recorded 1cm of rain on Friday night.

Private weather blogger Pradeep John in a post said, “The best day for north Tamil Nadu was yesterday. South Chennai gets rain too yesterday. Next three days look awesome.”

The rain has not reduced the day temperature. High day temperature is what is causing the rain, he said.

The Met department said maximum and minimum temperatures may be around 37°C and 28 °C on Sunday.

சென்னையில் தண்ணீர் பிரச்சினை தலைவிரித்தாடுகிறது. ஒரு குடம் தண்ணீருக்காக இரவு முழுவதும் தூங்காமல் தண்ணீர் லாரியை எதிர்பார்த்து பலர் காத்துக்கிடக்கின்றனர். பல இடங்களில் ஒரு குடம் தண்ணீரை ரூ.5 முதல் ரூ.10 வரை விலை கொடுத்து வாங்கி வருகின்றனர். கடந்த ஒரு வாரமாக சென்னையில் மழை பெய்த போதும் தண்ணீர் பிரச்சினைக்கு தீர்வு ஏற்படவில்லை.

தலைவிரித்தாடும் தண்ணீர் பிரச்சினையை கருத்தில் கொண்டு சென்னை திருவல்லிக்கேணி பண்டி வெங்கடேசன் தெருவில் இட்லி, தோசை மாவு கடை நடத்தி வரும் பார்த்தசாரதி என்பவர் மாவு வாங்க வரும் பொதுமக்களுக்கு இலவசமாக தண்ணீர் கொடுக்க முடிவு செய்தார்.

அதன்படி, ‘ஒரு கிலோ இட்லி, தோசை மாவு வாங்கினால் ஒரு குடம் தண்ணீர் இலவசம்’ என்று அறிவித்தார். இதுதொடர்பான அறிவிப்பை பேனர் மூலம் தனது கடை முன்பு அவர் வைத்துள்ளார். மேலும், அந்த அறிவிப்பில் ஒரு கிலோ மாவு வாங்கினால் ஒரு குடம் நிலத்தடி நீர் இலவசமாக வழங்கப்படும் என்றும், மாவு வாங்க வரும்போது குடம் கொண்டு வர வேண்டும் என்றும் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதுமட்டுமல்லாமல் வாடிக்கையாளர்களின் நலன் கருதி குடிநீரை வடிகட்டி காய்ச்சிய பிறகு உபயோகப்படுத்தவும் என்றும் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

இந்த அறிவிப்பை பார்த்த பொதுமக்கள் பலர் இவரது கடைக்கு மாவு வாங்க குடங்களுடன் படை எடுக்க தொடங்கி உள்ளனர். இதனால், குடிநீர் லாரியில் தண்ணீர் பிடிக்க குடங்களை வரிசையாக வைத்திருப்பது போன்று இவரது கடையிலும் குடங்கள் வரிசையாக வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.

தண்ணீர் பிரச்சினையை கருத்தில் கொண்டு சூழ்நிலைக்கு தகுந்தாற்போல் இந்த அறிவிப்பை வெளியிட்டு அதை செயல்படுத்தி வரும் மாவு கடை உரிமையாளர் பார்த்தசாரதி கூறும்போது, ‘கடந்த 24 ஆண்டுகளாக மாவு கடை நடத்தி வருகிறேன். ஆனால், இதுபோன்று தண்ணீர் பிரச்சினையை சந்தித்தது இல்லை. தண்ணீர் பிரச்சினையால் மக்கள் திண்டாடுவதை பார்த்து இதுபோன்ற அறிவிப்பை வெளியிட்டேன். வெளியில் இருந்து பணம் கொடுத்து தண்ணீரை வாங்கி வாடிக்கையாளர்களுக்கு கொடுத்து வருகிறேன்’ என்றார்.

Chennai: Rain fills sumps, but water table at rock bottom

CHENNAI: Rain after almost 200 days did a few things – it brought down the searing temperatures, partially filled water bodies such as temple tanks and ponds that were bone dry for two months and sensitized residents about rainwater harvesting.

If many in Chennai put out pots to ‘catch’ the rain amid a heavy downpour on Wednesday evening, resident associations are now coming together to set up rainwater harvesting structures, something they have not done for years. At Mogappair West, Golden Fortune Southern Enclave Owners Association is meeting on Sunday to find a solution to the crisis its 500-plus residents are facing. “Our wells have very little water and the borewell water is not usable. We will harvest every drop of rainwater from now,” said V Santosh, the association secretary. “Harvesting could bring down the salt content in the borewell water as well,” he said.

Hydrogeologist J Saravanan said those who understood the importance of rainwater harvesting are reaping the benefits, although little. “In buildings where the structures have been maintained, the quality and quantity of water will improve.”

At the women’s hostel at College of Engineering, Guindy, water collected on the roof enters a filter chamber and then into a 36,000-litre sump. But the recent rain brought in 36,000 litres and the sump overflowed.

At the Guindy National Park, wildlife officials said the rain partially filled six ponds. The tank at the Kapaleeswarar Temple in Mylapore has some water now.

While small changes were visible on the surface, the rain would not make any difference below it, said Metrowater officials.

“Only the permeable layer would have got wet in the rains and around 20% of the water would have been absorbed,” said an official.

The city has clayey soil and sandy soil in different areas. While water would be absorbed by clayey soil instantly and percolate into the aquifer, in areas with sandy soil, water will take a couple of hours to percolate. “But that said, only after a couple of heavy showers an improvement could be recorded in the soil,” the official said.

CHENNAI: Isolated parts in Chennai city witnessed light to moderate showers on Saturday evening.

“Tambaram Sanatorium and areas around East Coast Road experienced showers around 4 pm while areas in North Chennai had rain at 5 pm,’’ a Meteorological Department official said. Areas such as Nungambakkam, Annanagar, Ashok Nagar and Ambattur Industrial Estate too witnessed showers on Saturday evening. There were power cuts in certain parts of North Chennai, namely areas such as Tondiarpet and Kaladipet.

“There was a one-hour power cut because of the rain. Power went off at 7pm and was restored at 8 pm,’’ said Venkatesh A, a resident of Kaladipet. Much to the relief of Chennai residents, the temperature on Saturday evening touched a low of 27 degrees Celsius.

Rain in TN for 2 days 

A Regional Meteorological Department bulletin said Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts may receive light to moderate rain on Sunday and Monday. The department has forecast light to moderate rain in the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and places near the Western Ghats due to southwest monsoon.


The Nilgiris, Theni and Coimbatore districts are likely to get isolated heavy rain while Villupuram, Cuddalore, Karaikal, Puducherry, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Ramanathapuram may face light to moderate rain on the two days. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 40 and 30 deg Celsius. For over two weeks, Tamil Nadu had been witnessing heatwave conditions, with temperatures soaring up to 42 degrees Celsius.

More schools shut due to water shortage

While Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami continues to claim that there is no water shortage in schools, more and more in the city are shutting down temporarily because of it.

Lady Andal Venkatasubba Rao Matriculation School in Chetpet declared a holiday for Classes I to VIII on Saturday because of the water scarcity. Students said they haven’t had adequate water supply in their restrooms since Thursday. “We managed to handle the crisis by bringing buckets of water from the swimming pool, but we cannot continue this way. That’s why we have declared a holiday on Saturday,” said KS Rajan, manager of Madras Seva Sadan, the organisation running the school.

On Wednesday, another prominent ICSE school in RA Puram informed parents by email that both taps and gates would remain shut. At Khatri Matriculation School in Kancheepuram district, boards were put up a few hours before school opened informing parents that school would work only half-day for students from pre-kindergarten to Class V. Some schools have started to collect additional fee from parents for arranging water supply through tankers.

School education minister KA Sengottaiyan has said that it is not the government’s but the school management’s responsibility to ensure every student is provided with adequate water.

It was not just schools, high-end residential complexes -- such as Metrozone near Koyambedu – that didn’t face a shortage till date, are now announcing to occupants that water is in short supply. A message from its maintenance department to residents read: “Due to water scarcity, vendors are not able to supply water to our premises. We cannot give time lines when things will return to normal. Residents are requested to use minimal water.”

Facing huge administrative pressure due to a severe water crisis, chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday said his government would write to Kerala, requesting for drinking water supply of two million litres every day. The state would also bring 10 million litres of water every day from Jolarpet in Vellore to Chennai through rail wagons for about six months.

In an interaction with reporters at the secretariat, the chief minister blamed the crisis on monsoon failure and the drought-like situation, and lack of cooperation from neighbouring states. He said his government decided to accept Kerala’s offer of water. “But they assured only a one-time supply. I thank Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s gesture. But two million litres a day is insufficient as we supply 525MLD for Chennai. If they do it every day, it would benefit us,” Palaniswami said. His reaction came in the wake of reports that Tamil Nadu had spurned Kerala’s offer.

CM urges Kerala to increase storage of Mullaperiyar

Palaniswami requested his Kerala counterpart to increase storage of Mullaperiyar dam to 152ft, as per the Supreme Court directions. Slamming the Karnataka JD(S)-Congress government for its persistent efforts to build Mekedatu dam across river Cauvery River, Palaniswami urged the “Congress friends” to prevail upon their Karnataka counterparts to abide by the court orders. “Despite Cauvery authority’s order to release 9.19tmcft of water in June, Karnataka refuses to oblige. If Mekedatu is built, Tamil Nadu will not get a drop of water,” the CM said, recalling how the former Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah declined his requests to release 2tmcft to meet drinking water needs, and refused to give him an audience. If Mekedatu was built and Cauvery authority dismantled, Tamil Nadu would turn into a desert, he warned.

Even Krishna water from Andhra Pradesh was not forthcoming, the CM said. The neighbour has supplied only two tmcft of water as against 12 tmcft in an interstate agreement. “They said they have only 4tmcft and water cannot be released if the storage is not 8tmcft,” said Palaniswami, who sanctioned additional ₹200 crore for state-wide water supply schemes on Friday, in addition to ₹710 crore already allotted. The government also sanctioned ₹65 crore for rail wagon supply from Vellore to Chennai. The CM and chief secretary had held periodical meetings with water managers and issued necessary instructions.

The chief minister said there were instances of many flat owners of an apartment booking for tankers online, depriving others their due. “While the rich could do so online and get from their land, the state’s priority is to supply to the poor and needy who cannot afford to pay… We have to maintain uniform supply for the next four months, as our next monsoon is only in November and December,” he said, indicating that his government would convene a meeting with tanker owners to give necessary instructions to collect uniform rates.

Sudden showers in several parts of Chennai on Thursday took many by surprise including the weather experts. Pradeep John aka Tamil Nadu Weatherman, who is known for his weather analysis, has come up with interesting updates regarding the unprecedented rains and the impact it will have on Chennai and surrounding districts in the coming days.

Pradeep John wrote on Facebook: "Rains probability in Chennai from today till next 6 days and its good bye to 40+C hot days from tomorrow. As I said earlier, not all spells will be widespread and don't expect rains in north Chennai, when it is raining in south Chennai. At least each place in the city will get at least 2-3 rainy day in the coming spell."

He also went on to state that in addition to Chennai, surrounding districts like Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Vellore, Cuddalore and Puducherry might also witness rains.


"Not only Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Vellore, Cuddalore and Pondy also has chance of rains. West coast will be activated too. Cauvery catchment should get good rains so will Nilgiris and Valparai regions of Tamil Nadu. Temperature is expected to fall from tomorrow. Let's say goodbye to 40+ days right from today," Pradeep John said.

He claimed that heat is a must for the rains as the state doesn't get direct low-pressure rains.

Chennai's dry spell ends after 200 days
