The TN government on Monday permitted cinema theatres and multiplexes to operate with 100% occupancy. The move would help new Tamil films, including actor Vijay’s ‘Master’ and T Silambarasan’s ‘Easwaran’, to garner better collections at the box office as they would be released ahead of the Pongal festival. While ‘Master’ would be released in 700 movie halls, ‘Easwaran’ would be screened in 300 theatres. The development comes in the wake of Vijay calling on CM Edappadi K Palaniswami late on December 27 and urging him to permit 100% occupancy in theatres.

Subsequently, members of the Tamil Nadu Theatres Association too represented the state government seeking to remove the restrictions on audience allowed into theatres. Based on the directions of the ministry of home affairs, cinemas/theatres/ multiplexes were permitted to open from November 10, 2020, with 50% of their seating capacity by following the standard operating procedure. “Based on the decrease in Covid-19 cases day by day, the Theatre Owners Association have represented to the government to increase the seating capacity of cinemas/ theatres/ multiplexes,” a state GO issued on Monday said, permitting the theatres to operate with full occupancy.

“In order to create awareness among spectators, precautionary measures for Covid-19 shall also be screened during the show time,” the GO said. While the Tamil film industry including actors welcomed the move, several people took to social media expressing fear that the relaxation could trigger a second wave, especially with a new strain of Covid making its presence felt in the state. They also cited the instances of a few hotels in Chennai emerging as new clusters.

“This is a dangerous move that could backfire. It is a selfish move taken with the hope that actor Vijay and his fans would extend their support at the time of assembly elections. Do not sacrifice the lives of Tamils for political gains,” senior Congress leader and former MP Peter Alphonse tweeted.

Actor and BJP leader Khushbu Sundar thanked CM Palaniswami and information and publicity minister Kadambur C Raju. “Film industry will flourish by leaps and bounds and come back to give best entertainment, being one of the largest economy generating field,” she tweeted. Khushbu also had a message to those who are worried over the decision. “Those who have different opinions on 100% capacity functioning of cinemas, only one message for you. Pls don’t go if you are worried. Your fear is understandable and nobody forces you to come. Take care,” she tweeted.

Tirupur K Subramanian, a leading distributor and exhibitor cited instances of politicians having already undertaken their election campaigns, while people are crowding retail shops and public places. “The CM is campaigning. Opposition leader M K Stalin is conducting grama sabhas. People are crowding textiles and jewellery showrooms where they engage in face-to-face interactions. In theatres, at the most, the audience are going clap and laugh. The SOP will be strictly followed though other public places seldom follow these,” Subramanian said.

நம் வாழ்வில் இரண்டறக் கலந்த விஷயங்களில் பாடல்களுக்கும் முக்கியத்துவம் உண்டு. பாடல்களை முணுமுணுக்காதவர்கள் வெகு குறைவுதான். நம் வாழ்க்கையுடன் பின்னிப்பிணைந்து விட்ட எத்தனையோ பாடல்கள் உண்டு. நம் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் ஒவ்வொரு விதமான பாடல்கள் ஈர்த்திருக்கும். திரும்பத் திரும்பக் கேட்போம். கேட்டுக்கேட்டு ரசிப்போம். ரசித்து ரசித்துப் பூரிப்போம். இப்படி நமக்கும் பாடலுக்குமான பந்தம் போல், காலத்துக்கும் பாட்டுக்கும் கூட தொடர்பு உண்டு. அப்படியொரு காலம்... புத்தாண்டின் தொடக்கம். அந்தத் தொடக்கத்தில் பிணைந்திருக்கும் பாடல்... ‘ நான் தான் சகலகலாவல்லவன்’ எனும் ‘ஹாப்பி நியூ இயர்’ பாடல்!

82ம் ஆண்டுக்கு முன்பு, ஆங்கிலப் புத்தாண்டை எந்தப் பாடலைக் கொண்டு கொண்டாடினோமோ? ஆனால், 82ம் ஆண்டுக்குப் பிறகு தொடங்கி இதோ... 2021ன் புத்தாண்டு வரை, 2020ம் ஆண்டு முடிந்து நள்ளிரவு 12 மணிக்கு ஒலிபரப்புகிற பாடல்... ‘விஷ் யூ ஹாப்பி நியூ இயர்’ என்கிற ‘சகலகலா வல்லவன்’ படத்தின் பாடலாகத்தான் இருக்கிறது.

ஏவி.எம் எனும் பாரம்பரியம் மிக்க நிறுவனம் பிரமாண்டமான முறையில் தயாரித்த படம் ‘சகலகலாவல்லவன்’. கமல், அம்பிகா, ரவீந்தர், சில்க் ஸ்மிதா, வி.கே.ராமசாமி, புஷ்பலதா, துளசி, ஒய்.ஜி.மகேந்திரன், தேங்காய் சீனிவாசன் முதலானோர் நடித்த இந்தப் படம், மிகப்பெரிய வெற்றியைப் பெற்றது.

பொழுதுபோக்கு அம்சங்கள் கொண்ட, அனைத்து ஏரியா ரசிகர்களையும் குஷிப்படுத்துகிற படமாக அமைந்தது ‘சகலகலா வல்லவன்’. பஞ்சு அருணாசலம் கதை, வசனம் எழுத, எஸ்.பி.முத்துராமன் இயக்கினார். ஜுடோ ரத்தினத்தின் சண்டைக்காட்சிகள் மிரட்டின. கிராமத்து கேரக்டரும் இடைவேளைக்குப் பின்னர் ஃபாரின் ரிட்டர்ன் கேரக்டரும் என கமல் நடிப்பில் பிரமாதப்படுத்தினார்.

கவிஞர் வாலி பாடல்கள் எழுத, இளையராஜாவின் இசையில் எல்லாப் பாடல்களுமே மிகப்பெரிய வெற்றியைப் பெற்றன. ‘அம்மன் கோவில் கிழக்காலே’ எனும் டைட்டில் பாடலை இளையராஜாவே பாடியிருந்தார். அநேகமாக, இந்தக் காலகட்டத்தில்தான் ‘இளையராஜா டைட்டில் பாட்டு பாடினால், அந்தப் படம் பிரமாண்டமான வெற்றியை பெறும்’ எனும் சென்டிமென்ட், திரையுலகில் ஏற்பட்டது.

‘கட்டவண்டி கட்டவண்டி’ என்ற பாடல் ஆண் குரலிலும் பெண் குரலிலுமாக இரண்டு முறை வந்தது. இரண்டுமே ஹிட்டடித்தது. ‘நிலாக்காயுது நேரம் நல்ல நேரம்’ பாடலும் இன்றைக்கும் ஹிட் வரிசைப் பாடல். முக்கியமாக, நேத்து ராத்திரி யம்மா தூக்கம் போச்சுடி யம்மா’ எனும் பாடல் அடைந்த வெற்றிக்கு எல்லையே இல்லை. இளையராஜா, எஸ்.பி.பி. மலேசியா வாசுதேவன் என பாடகர்களையும் வாலியின் பாடல் வரிகளையும் இன்றைக்கும் மறக்கவே இல்லை ரசிகர்கள்!

எல்லாவற்றையும் விட முக்கியமாக, காலங்கள் கடந்த பாடலாக, காலத்துக்குமான பாடலாக, காலத்துக்கு தொடர்பு உள்ள பாடலாக ‘சகலகலாவல்லவன்’ படத்தில் அமைந்த ‘விஷ் யூ ஹாப்பி நியூ இயர்’ ‘நான் தான் சகலகலாவல்லவன்’ என்ற பாடல் அடைந்த வெற்றி குறித்தும் பாடல் தந்த தாக்கம் குறித்தும் பாடல் நம் கொண்டாட்டத்துடன் இணைந்த பிரிக்கமுடியாத பந்தம் குறித்தும் சொல்லவே தேவையில்லை.

1982ம் ஆண்டு ஆகஸ்ட் மாதம் 14ம் தேதி சுதந்திர தினத்தை முன்னிட்டு வெளியான இந்தப் படம், அந்த வருடத்தின் மிகப்பெரிய வசூல் குவித்த படமாக அமைந்தது. அதுமட்டுமா? முந்தைய வருடங்களில் வெளியான ‘திரிசூலம்’ முதலான படங்களின் வசூல் சாதனைகளையெல்லாம் முறியடித்தது ‘சகலகலாவல்லவன்’.

திரையிட்ட தியேட்டர்கள் பலவற்றிலும் 200 நாட்களைக் கடந்து ஓடியது. 82ம் ஆண்டு டிசம்பர் 31ம் தேதி நள்ளிரவு தொடங்கி 83ம் ஆண்டு ஜனவரி 1ம் தேதியன்று, ‘விஷ்யூ ஹாப்பி நியூ இயர்’ என்கிற ‘சகலகலாவல்லவன்’ பாடலே ஒலிபரப்பப்பட்டது. டீக்கடைகளிலும் தியேட்டர்களிலும் வானொலிகளிலும் தூர்தர்ஷனிலும் இந்தப் பாடலே இடம்பிடித்தது.

அடுத்தடுத்த ஆண்டுகளில், டிசம்பர் 31ம் தேதி இரவுக்காட்சி வேறு ஏதோவொரு படம் ஓடிக்கொண்டிருக்கும். சரியாக 12 மணி வரும்போது, ஓடிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் படத்தை நிறுத்திவிட்டு, ‘சகலகலாவல்லவன்’ படத்தின் ‘நான் தான் சகலகலாவல்லவன்’ என்ற பாடலை ஒளிபரப்புவார்கள். எல்லோரும் விசில் பறக்கவிடுவார்கள். கரவொலி எழுப்புவார்கள். குத்தாட்டம் போடுவார்கள். ஒருவருக்கொருவர் வாழ்த்துகளைப் பரிமாறிக்கொள்வார்கள். 83ம் ஆண்டு ஆங்கிலப்புத்தாண்டின் போது தொடங்கிய காலத்துக்கும் இந்தப் பாடலுக்குமான பந்தம் 2021ம் ஆண்டிலும் தொடர்ந்துகொண்டேதான் இருக்கிறது.

’இளையராஜாவின் இசையில் எல்லாப் பாடல்களும் நல்ல வரவேற்பைப் பெறும் என்றுதான் நம்பினோம். ஆனால், அனைத்துப் பாடல்களுமே இன்றுவரைக்கும் மிகப்பெரிய தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தும் பாடல்களாக இருக்கும் என்று நினைக்கவில்லை. முக்கியமா, ‘ஹாப்பி நியூ இயர்’ பாடல் ஒவ்வொரு வருடமும் புத்தாண்டை வரவேற்கிற பாடலாக அமையும் என்றெல்லாம் நினைக்கவே இல்லை. இளையராஜாவின் இசை அப்படியானது’ என்று இயக்குநர் எஸ்.பி.முத்துராமன் தெரிவித்திருந்தார்.

கமலின் நடிப்பு, ஆட்டம், இளையராஜாவின் இசை, வாலியின் வரிகள், முக்கியமாக எஸ்.பி.பி.யின் வசீகரக் குரல்... என இன்றைக்கும் ஒவ்வொரு புத்தாண்டையும் வரவேற்றுக் கொண்டிருக்கிறான் ‘சகலகலா வல்லவன்’.

37 வருடங்களாக ‘ஹாப்பி நியூ இயர்’ சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறான் ‘சகலகலாவல்லவன்’. ‘இளமை இதோ இதோ’ என்ற இந்தப் புத்தாண்டுப் பாடலுக்கு வயது கூடவே இல்லை!

Actor Rajinikanth, who was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Hyderabad on Friday, is stable. However, doctors are awaiting a few more reports to take a call on his discharge from the hospital, according to a hospital bulletin issued on Saturday evening.

“Rajinikanth is stable. Reports of some of the investigations done today (Saturday) have come and there is nothing alarming. A few more reports are awaited. Based on the reports of remaining investigations and his blood pressure status overnight, a call will be taken tomorrow (Sunday) morning on his discharge from the hospital,” said the statement from Apollo.

Earlier in the day, the hospital released a bulletin in which it said Rajinikanth’s health was “progressing well” but his blood pressure was still high, though under better control. “He has been advised complete rest in view of his labile blood pressure and visitors are not being allowed to meet him,” said the statement.

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday spoke to Rajinikanth over phone and enquired about his health condition.

The CM took to social media and posted a tweet about his telephonic conversation with the actor and said, “I have also informed him (Rajinikanth) that I will pray to God for his quick recovery.” Deputy CM O Panneerselvam also took to social media and wished the actor, whom he referred to as “beloved brother,” a speedy recovery. He also tagged the actor.

Actor Rajinikanth was admitted to Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad on Friday morning following ‘severe fluctuations in his blood pressure.’ He is stable.

“Though he did not have any symptoms of Covid-19, his blood pressure showed severe fluctuations and needed further evaluation for which he has been admitted,” the hospital said in a statement. He will be investigated and monitored closely till his pressure settles down before being discharged. TNN

Rajinikanth had gone to Hyderabad on December 13 for the shooting of his latest film ‘Annaatthe’ which resumed on December 14 at Ramoji Film City after a long break due to the Covid-19 induced lockdown. Earlier this week, the shooting was postponed indefinitely after four members of the crew tested positive for Covid-19. Though Rajinikanth tested negative, he isolated himself and was monitored closely by a team from the hospital.

As news spread about Rajinikanth getting admitted to the hospital, fans offered prayers for his safe return to the city. Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundararajan and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu wished the actor speedy recovery. DMK chief M K Stalin inquired about the actor’s health over phone.

Actor Thavasi dies battling cancer

Tamil actor and comedian Thavasi, who was undergoing treatment for cancer at a private hospital in Madurai, passed away on Monday at the age of 60. He is survived by wife, son and daughter. According to Thiruppurankundram MLA Dr P Saravanan, at whose hospital Thavasi was undergoing treatment, the actor suffered breathing difficulties and had to be shifted to an ICU, but he breathed his last around 8 pm. “For the past two days, he was critically-ill and we provided him the best treatment we could. By Monday afternoon, his condition was worsening and became extremely critical. His death is a huge loss to the film fraternity,” said Dr Saravanan. The MLA said that his family had wished to take him back to his native place during the last days of his life but he had expired before they could make any arrangements. TNN

When cinema halls open on November 10 after more than seven months, you will have to wear masks throughout the show. There will be empty seats on either side. And big-budget releases are unlikely, at least for a while, as the industry will wait to see how many people turn up.

If you go as a family, you may get to sit next to one another, but not otherwise. So what if you turn up with your significant other? Hope for the best. Theatre owners are clear that they will observe the government’s rules on sanitation and social distancing. Only food and beverages in packets will be sold and toilets will be cleaned frequently. All seats will be wiped after each show. That’s what the more than 200 cinema halls in Chennai and suburbs have planned.

According to Abirami Ramanathan, Chennai city president of Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association, most cinema halls will reopen next week. Ticket prices won’t be hiked though only half the seats can be sold for a show, he added. In Chennai, the seating capacity of theatres ranges from 300 to 1,200.

Unlike previous Diwalis, movies of popular stars may not hit the screens this time, opening the window for small budget movies. Co-Founder of Qube Cinema Senthil Kumar said films produced with a budget under Rs 4 crores are likely to hit the screens. “Had the cinema halls reopened a little earlier, the prospects of big budget movies being released this Diwali would have been brighter,” he said.

However, a producer, who also owns a theatre, said release of big budget movies cannot be delayed much more as producers pay huge interest paid on loans. “If a leading artist’s movie is screened, it will be a boost for their fans and they will flock the cinema halls,” he added.

The government on Tuesday gave the green signal for cinemas to reopen from October 15 and issued directions such as running at 50% capacity, physical distancing in common areas, use of masks, and easy availability of sanitisers in touch-free mode at entry and exit points.

Information and broadcasting minister Prakash Javadekar released the SOPs on Tuesday and said measures like one-seat distance between viewers, would ensure that even as the business of film exhibition resumes, it is done keeping in mind all safety protocols.

While cinema halls in containment zones will remain shut, the government has allowed states and UTs to add extra measures in their respective regions as per local assessments. The guidelines mandate adequate physical distancing of at least six feet outside the auditoriums, common areas and waiting areas at all times, use of face masks, and mandatory availability of hand sanitisers at entry and exit points and common areas inside the premises.

While the use of Aarogya Setu app has not been made mandatory, the SOPs advise its installation and use. Javadekar also said online booking of tickets will be encouraged but box office will be open for single-screen theatres. “Proper ventilation has to be ensured and temperature setting of all air conditioning should be above 23 degree celsius,” he said.

The new SOPs also disallow any overlap between start, finish or intermission time in multiplexes. They also mandate the collection of contact numbers of all those who book tickets to facilitate contact tracing. Box offices will remain open for ticketing throughout the day and advance booking will be allowed to avoid crowds.

Actor and DMDK leader Vijayakant’s wife Premalatha has tested positive for Covid-19. She has been admitted to the same ward where her husband in undergoing treatment, doctors in Chennai’s Miot Hospital said.

Premalatha was asymptomatic but she decided to get admitted because she wanted to take care of Vijayakant, they said.

On September 22, Vijayakant tested positive for the viral infection. “Both of them are doing well and are likely to be discharged in a couple of days,” a doctor said.

Tamil Nadu deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam tweeted wishing Premalatha, who is DMDK treasurer, a speedy recovery.

A medical bulletin issued by Miot on September 24 said Vijayakant was stable and was expected to make a full recovery.

கொரோனா தொற்று காரணமாகக் கடந்த ஆகஸ்ட் மாதம் 5-ம் தேதி சென்னை அமைந்தகரையில் உள்ள எம்.ஜி.எம் மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டார் எஸ்.பி.பி. எப்படியாவது மீண்டு வந்துவிடுவார் என்ற நம்பிக்கையில் 50 நாள்களுக்கு மேலாக எல்லோரும் காத்துக்கொண்டிருந்தனர் ரசிகர்கள். இதற்கிடையில் அவருக்கு கொரோனா குணமாகிவிட்டதாகவும் மருத்துவமனை தகவல் தெரிவித்தது. மெல்ல மெல்ல நலமடைந்து வருகிறார் என்று அவரின் மகன் சரணும் நமபிக்கை தெரிவித்திருந்தார். இந்தச் சூழலில், செப்டம்பர் 24-ம் தேதி மாலை எஸ்.பி.பி-யின் உடல்நிலை மீண்டும் மோசமடைந்திருப்பதாக அறிக்கை வெளியிட்டது மருத்துவமனை நிர்வாகம். அதைத்தொடர்ந்து எஸ்.பி.பி-யின் உடல்நிலை குறித்து விசாரிப்பதற்காக மருத்துவமனைக்கு நேரில் விரைந்த கமல்ஹாசன் திரும்பிச் செல்லும்போது, `அவர் நலமாக இருக்கிறார் எனச் சொல்ல முடியாது’ என்று சொல்லிவிட்டுச் சென்றார்.

The Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan, were but two of the numerous awards that came to the effortless singer who found life’s rhythm in humility. He wasn’t just a singer; he composed music for more than 45 films in Telugu, Kannada, Tamil and Hindi; he acted in more than 40 Tamil, Telugu and Kannada movies.

SPB spent 51 days in hospital, battling Covid-19 with the same grace with which he did everything. Doctors and staff at the hospital treasure his handwritten notes thanking them for looking after him. He was put on life support for severe pneumonia on August 14. He tested negative for the viral infection on September 4, but by then his lungs were affected, doctors said. On Thursday, the singer suffered a serious setback, and by Friday, the doctors could do no more.

As word of his demise spread, people from all walks of life started queuing up at his residence at Kamdhar Nagar in the heart of the city to pay their respects. Many sang his songs – some smiling, some sobbing.

August 5, minutes after he walked into the hospital with “mild” symptoms of Covid-19, S P Balasubrahmanyam in a video asked his fans not to worry. During his 51-day stay in MGM Healthcare, SPB fought a fervid battle with the infection and other ailments, until a brain haemorrhage.

Initially, he seemed normal, but his lungs quickly deteriorated. On August 13, he was placed on life support. “We first put him on a ventilator and when his oxygen saturation did not improve we added the ECMO,” said a senior doctor.

A team of nurses was posted to care for him. “They were surprised with the care he showed them,” said Dr Sabanayagam who treated him. He couldn’t speak much but gestured. His first note to the nurses was a “love you all” message.

Lalitha sahasranamam were played daily in the room. When the IPL season began, he asked for a TV and sometimes watched a game.

The lethal virus, however, made it difficult for doctors to wean him off life support. “SPB was patient and co-operative. He was kind. Even when he had a complaint or discomfort he put it across gently,” said a senior nurse. He would write a note to nurses when he wanted to eat soup or when they had to increase or decrease oxygen flow from the ventilator.

Earlier this month, doctors decided to do a tracheotomy. “I was a little anxious because I did not want anything to happen to his voice,” said Dr Suresh Rao, co-director for Institute of Heart & Lung Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support. After the procedure, SPB cleared his throat and said he was fine. “That’s the voice of the man I can never forget,” Dr Rao said.

His condition was improving and the amount of air (tidal volume) that moved in or out of the lungs with each respiratory cycle increased giving hope. But on Thursday, there was a cerebral haemorrhage. “We had to stop the medication that thins blood. But his blood has to be thin to flow freely in and out of ECMO,” Dr Rao said. At 1.04pm, after a cardio respiratory arrest doctors declared him dead.

“In any small corner of the world, it is possible to find an SPB fan,” said actor and comedian Vivekh. Condolences poured in from several members of the Tamil film industry who remembered their association with singer S.P. Balasubrahmanyam and his contribution to cinema.

His ageless voice — he has sung for several senior actors as well as the younger actors in the industry spanning five decades — and his humility were remembered by actors, directors, musicians and technicians who have been influenced by his work.

“We’ve sung over 3,000 duets across six languages,” reminisced veteran playback singer P. Susheela. She said Balasubrahmanyam’s death was like the loss of a family member. “He was always ready to help anyone. One of the most memorable songs we’ve sung together is Aayiram nilave vaa,” she said.

Sharing a few lines from the song Engo pogudhu vaanam that Balasubrahmanyam had sung in the Rajinikanth film Kochadaiiyaan, composer A.R. Rahman wrote on Twitter that the singer’s voice was “the Voice of Victory, Love, Devotion and Joy”.

“He has sung over 40,000 songs and performed at numerous stage shows. Despite this fame, we have all learnt humility from him. He always stood grounded,” composer Harris Jayaraj said. The singer had left a legacy and his work and life would be an institution for generations to come, he said.

Actor and politician T. Rajendar said Balasubrahmanyam had given life to several songs he had composed. “Not just for the Tamil film industry, it is a huge loss for the country,” he said. Poet Vairamuthu said Balasubrahmanyam’s voice had been a companion to his writing for over 40 years.

“I had the honour of lip-syncing the songs that you have sung, on screen. We will all never forget your voice,” actor Sathyaraj said.

The South Indian Artists Association or Nadigar Sangam said his death was an irreplaceable loss to the film industry and he was an accomplished actor, besides being a singer. Music composer D. Imman said that for actor Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Annathey, SPB had already recorded a song. “I feel blessed that I had the opportunity to work with him and record one of his last songs. He was such a loving and wonderful person,” he said. Director Bharathiraja, with whom the singer shared a close friendship, said SPB did not belong to a single State but to the entire country.

“I sing the notes as they are written but it is the Almighty who comes out as my voice,” was a frequent statement made by S.P. Balasubrahmanyam. His first recorded song was from the film Shanti Nilayam, produced by Gemini Vasan, and the script work was done by me. Englishman Marcus Bartley was the cameraman.

M.S. Viswanathan had tuned a song Iyarkaii Ennum Ilaiyya Kanni and a few months earlier, SPB had frequented his house seeking an opportunity to sing in films. “Get rid of your Telugu accent and improve your Tamil!” MSV told him, and within months, SPB’s Tamil improved. MSV made him sing Iyarkaii Ennum Ilaiyya Kanni and it was an instant hit. He received ₹150 as remuneration for the song.

eanwhile, MGR had an issue with T.M. Soundararajan, and SPB had the opportunity to sing for him — the song Ayiram Nilave Vaa in Adimai Penn. Though Adimai Penn released first, SPB’s first recorded song was from Shanti Nilayam.

SPB loved working with our Chithralaya Unit and before singing Panivizhum Malarvanam, he said, “Gopu sir, Chithralayaa is my mother’s home.”

Five-time world chess champion Viswanathan Anand is a huge fan of playback singer S.P. Balasubrahmanyam.

On Twitter, Mr. Anand spoke about SPB sponsoring his team — Chennai Colts — in the national team championship in 1983. “His music gave us such joy,” he said.

Mr. Anand said the national team championship in 1983 was, in a way, a turning point for him.

“We have been waiting for good news [about SPB’s recovery]. Every time there was an update that he seemed to have got better, I was relieved. Then, when news emerged that he was very critical, I began to feel the worst,” he said.

Playback singer S P Balasubrahmanyam, who was admitted to MGM Healthcare in Chennai, with mild Covid-19 symptoms, continues to be on life support. His condition is critical.

The 74-year-old singer was moved into the intensive care unit on Friday after his oxygen saturation dipped. He was admitted to the hospital on August 5. On Saturday, Dr V Sabanayagam, consultant and clinical lead, MGM healthcare, said the singer had been on life support in the intensive care unit for the past 48 hours but his condition is stable.

“He has been administered plasma therapy and the recommended medications such as remdesiver, steroids and medications to prevent blood clots. The life support is to help them breathe. He has been undergoing physiotherapy and frequently kept in a prone position to improve oxygenation. Doctors are monitoring his clinical parameters,” he said. SPB has been waking up from time to time. “He is aware of the treatment we are giving him,” the doctor said.

While visitors are not allowed, health minister C Vijayabaskar dropped in at the hospital along with senior government doctors to enquire about SPB’s health. “The chief minister is concerned about SPB’s health. The hospital explained his health condition and our medical team has also offered help to the treating team. I also spoke to his son who is now quarantined. We are hopeful he will recover,” he said. Policemen were posted outside the hospital for crowd management.

Earlier, the singer’s son, singer and film producer S P Charan released a video message assuring people that he was hopeful that his father would recover from the viral infection. “I have been receiving calls since the morning. Appa is stable now. He is responding well to the ventilator. His lungs are functioning better than they were yesterday. Doctors are confident he will pull through. But it will take time. ….Recovery will be slow,” he said, urging people to continue praying.

On Friday, the hospital announced there was a setback in the singer’s health. On August 13, his condition deteriorated and based on the advice of the expert medical team he was put on life support in the intensive care unit.

On August 5, the singer himself posted a video message on his Facebook page stating that he had tested positive for Covid-19 after showing mild symptoms. He said although doctors had advised him home isolation, he decided to get himself admitted to a hospital as he was concerned about the health of his family members. He requested people not to call him as he wanted some rest.

Singer Asha Bhosle filed a complaint with state power utility firm MSEDCL after receiving a bill of Rs 2 lakh for her bungalow in Lonavla. Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) stated that the bill was generated per the ‘actual meter reading’, and that this had been communicated to the singer. MSEDCL has been receiving flak from consumers for ‘inflated’ bills in June.

Bhosle received a power bill of Rs 2,08,870 for June, while the bill for the same house for the months May and April were Rs 8,855.44 and Rs 8,996.98, respectively. According to the power consumption history mentioned in the bill, the singer had received a bill of Rs 6,395.66 for June 2019.

“We received a complaint from Bhosle for an inflated bill. Acting on the same, a senior official from the Pune circle personally went there [Bhosle’s Lonavla bungalow] to check the reading. It was verified that the meter reading was correct and so was the bill,” said an MSEDCL spokesperson. He added that after conducting a proper investigation, it was found that the bungalow was not closed and that shoots were taking place there.

Bhosle was not available for comment. This is not the first time she has complained about inflated electricity bills. In 2016, Bhosale had complained about receiving an exorbitant bill for the bungalow, which was “not much in use”. The then energy minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule had then assured Bhosle that he would look into the matter. PTI

The Kodaikanal police on Monday registered a case against Tamil film actors Vimal and ‘Parotta’ Soori following an uproar by locals over the duo’s visit to the hill station violating Covid-19 lockdown norms. The actors visited Kodaikanal without obtaining epasses, which have been made mandatory for inter-district travel in Tamil Nadu during the lockdown. Vimal is native of a village near Manapparai in Trichy district while Soori is a native of Madurai.

The two had visited a few places in Kodaikanal with the help of some locals. They were caught by forest department officials for trespassing into restricted forest areas and imposed a fine of ₹2,000 each.

Forest sources said the duo had been involved in fishing in the Berijam lake located in the upper parts of the hills.

Locals said forest department officials had gone soft on the actors, as there were instances where fine for trespassing went up to ₹40,000.

They have urged officials to ensure that no one reaches the hill station without e-pass. Although the first Covid-19 case was reported only in the first week of June, ever since the number has been increased rapidly now with around 150 reported so far. Kodaikanal deputy superintendent of police Aathmanathan said the duo were booked under two sections for visiting without an epass and act likely to spread infection. Police sources said the cases against the actors were bailable in nature and there was no need to arrest them.
