HC grants relief to NRI student

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday directed the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) to open its web portal and issue an admission letter to an NRI medical student.

Dr. Faaria Asif Ali, 25, a Juhu resident, had sought admission to the post-graduate course in dermatology at DY Patil Medical college under the NRI category. Despite the letter from the DGHS dated May 19 that deemed her eligible for the course, the college had refused admission unless she paid ₹50 lakh for admission.

On Wednesday, the college consented to grant admission. Advocate Anukul B. Seth, representing Dr. Ali, said the college has permitted her to begin attending lectures. However, since the DGHS has not included her in an official capacity, a Division Bench comprising Justices Nitin Sambre and PD Naik directed it to open the admission portal and grant admission to Dr. Ali.

The court ordered that they must complete all formalities, ensure her admission to the post-graduate medical course and not block her admission. The matter will now be heard on June 11 for compliance by the DGHS.

PUDUCHERRY: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has directed a deemed university in the Union territory to discharge (remove from the rolls of the institution) eight postgraduate medical students and three diploma students admitted last academic year with immediate effect and submit a compliance report within a week.

MCI joint secretary Rajendra Wabale in a notice addressed to the principal of Mahatma Gandhi medical college and research institute, a constituent college of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, a deemed university, asked him to comply with the notice issued by the council on July 24 last year and discharge 11 students (eight PG medical students and three diploma students).

He said the council will take necessary action if the college failed to comply with the order.

The council will take a final call on the future of six students (four PG medical students and two diploma students), who were given different specialities by the college against the ones allotted to them by the centralised admission committee, after receiving the opinion of the additional solicitor general of India.

The council, however, withdrew its order discharging four students (a PG student and three diploma students).
9 Ways to improve your sense of humour and escape the friendzone

— Sunaina Mullick, Mensxp.com times of india

Having a great sense of humour is an added bonus to your already charming personality. Think about it. If you have the looks, personality and charm department covered, then all you need is to brush up on your humour skills, and you’re gold. At least for her. When women are asked what they seek in a man, they always end the answer with, ‘He should have a good sense of humour’. Sometimes it’s even above ‘he should be good looking’.

Having a good sense of humour isn’t just about getting jokes and laughing at them. It’s about making sure you make her laugh, so she knows there is never a dull moment with you. So, in order to up your humour quotient a notch and escape that wretched friendzone, we’ve devised a few tips you can follow to fine tune your funny bone and floor her with your ridiculously funny wit.

1 ALWAYS KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE

Not all women have the same tickle spot. So, when you’re out with a woman, always gauge the kind of attention she needs and what makes her laugh. It could be your quirkiness, wit, sarcasm or even straight out slapstick stuff. In some cases, it could be you making a fool of yourself! Whatever it is, always figure what kind of an audience she is and what her sense of humour is. Only then you’d be able to hack your way through an awesome evening out with her.

2 WATCHING COMEDY HELPS

If you already have a humouristic flair then you’re set, but to enhance some humour skills, you can watch some standup comedy artists or funny shows online. The delivery of your joke is important. Whether it’s a sarcastic retort or a witty comment, the way you deliver it is what matters because that’s the deciding edge for whether or not your joke is funny. So, watch some comedians work their magic on the screen and let them help you.

3 MAKE SURE THE JOKES ARE NON-OFFENSIVE

Make sure your jokes do not offend her. This takes us back to the first tip — know your audience. If you’re out with an all-out feminist, you might want to stay away from sexist jokes. Similarly, if she’s healthy or not too tall, body shaming jokes shouldn’t be indulged in. Not just on her, on anyone, in front of her! If you’re comfortable around her maybe you can pick out a few things you can joke about which may not be offensive to her. Like if she does yoga, you can take a dig at yoga and make a harmless little joke, which can be taken light heartedly and make her smile.

4 TIMING IS EVERYTHING

You can’t make a joke at every chance you get. There is something known as comic timing, which has to be impeccable. For instance, if she’s talking about her dog, who recently died, you can’t start making dead dog jokes. In fact, you should have some light hearted comedy to make her laugh or smile. But if she seems a bit too upset maybe lay off the jokes and console her instead?

Sometimes when the timing is off, the joke can get from bad to worse, making it the end of anything and everything fruitful. So, always know when the right time is to crack a joke.

5 KEEP SOME JOKES HANDY, JUST IN CASE

Sometimes you may be really nervous, but don’t fret too much. In case you’re having trouble switching your funny side on, then you can perhaps learn some jokes? Don’t worry, even the funniest comedians have scriptwriters, so there is nothing wrong with learning a few jokes. But remember only learn the jokes that are funny to you because if you don’t get the joke yourself, how will you ever tell it to make her laugh?

6 ADD SOME F(P)UN

If you’re all about puns, then that’s an added bonus. Puns usually bring out your witty side and if you can make a pun or two, you’ll definitely impress her. Puns are very situational and can’t be used as normal jokes. So, if you see a situation arising, use your brain and try and make the situation punnier!

7 IT’S OKAY TO BE THE BUTT OF THE JOKE

Sometime making jokes about other people can be offensive, but making jokes about yourself is always the safer side. I am sure you’ve done some really embarrassing things in the past? What you can do is, make really funny stories up about different instances where you’ve messed up and tell it like a joke. They might be embarrassing to you but they will definitely make other people laugh! Storytelling is an art, so make the stories as interesting and funny as you can. It’s a really good icebreaker too.

8 BE CONFIDENT

That, of course, goes without saying. If you’re not confident, your joke delivery will be poor and she will definitely get bored. If you’re confident about the way you tell a joke, then your joke will actually do what it’s supposed to — make her laugh! So, while telling a funny story, or being punny or witty, make sure you don’t stutter or stammer and your comic timing is good.

9 ALWAYS LOOK AT THE BRIGHTER SIDE

A funny guy such as yourself can’t be morose and depressed. It is said though that most comedians suffer from depression or have low selfesteem. But these issues crop up if you keep your feelings trapped and only deal with people through humour, as an outlet. Make sure you emote all emotions equally and are always looking at the positives life throws at you. Only then, will your sense of humour dazzle her.

Password mistakes that can put you at a hacker’s mercy

TOI 10.06.2018

New research indicates that most users rely on the same patterns when making passwords, and reuse the same one for different sites and accounts

businessinsider.in

We are really bad at choosing passwords. According to a new study by a researcher at Virginia Tech and Dashlane, a password manager service, most users make the same mistakes when making passwords, such as making it the name of a popular brand or sports team.

And while these things make passwords easy to remember, they make passwords easily guessable by hackers. The study evaluated 6.1 million anonymised passwords gathered by Gang Wang, a computer science researcher at Virginia Tech, and analysed by Dashlane. Those passwords come from the massive troves of user personal data that have been leaked in data breaches over the years. Here are the common mistakes people make, and what you should avoid:

Recycling the same password (or modifying it slightly) for every website

According to Wang’s initial study, more than half of users reused the same password from site to site or modified it slightly. “It is difficult for humans to memorise unique passwords for the 150+ accounts the average person has,” Wang says in a statement. “This danger has been amplified by the massive data breaches which have given attackers more effective tools for guessing and hacking passwords.”

Password walking

Password walking refers to the practice of using combinations of letters, numbers, and symbols that are adjacent to one another on the keyboard, like ‘qwerty’ and ‘123456’. Here are some other common password walking Dashlane researchers found: 1q2w3e4r, 1qaz2wsx, 1qazxsw2, 1qaz@wsx.

Strong expressions of love or hate

Another common practice that Dashlane researchers found is strong expressions of love or hate, with hateful passwords most often expressed with choice words. Here are the most common love/ hate passwords Dashlane found: iloveyou, f*ckyou, a**hole, f*ckoff, iloveme, trustno1, ihateyou, bullsh*t, lovelove.

Brands

Researchers found that c om mon brands also appeared in many passwords. Here are the most common brands used in passwords. myspace, mustang, linkedin, Ferrari, playboy, mercedes, cocacola, snickers, corvette.

Pop culture references

Popu l a r movies, music, and TV shows also made their way into passwords used in the study. Here are the most common ones: superman, pokemon, slipknot, starwars, metallica, nirvana, blink182, spiderman, rockstar.

Champions League

Dashlane found a ton of sportsrelated passwords, but the Champions League topped them all. Here are the most common Champions League passwords: liverpool, chelsea, arsenal, barcelona, manchester.

Here are some ways to write a good, hacker-proof password:

Use a unique password for every online account. Generate passwords that exceed the minimum of eight characters and create them with a mix of case-sensitive letters, numbers, and special symbols. Also, you should consider avoiding passwords that contain common phrases, slang, places, or names. If you are not confident, take help from a password manager to generate, store, and manage your passwords.

Don’t make your password the name of a Champions League football team or a TV show
It’s official: Monsoon arrives a day early and comes pouring with its usual woes

TEAM TOI  10.06.2018

Mumbai:

Monsoon arrived in Mumbai with a bang early Saturday and headed straight to the town. While most areas in the city received a fair amount of rainfall, it was the island city that got the maximum. Fort received 207mm and Nariman Point 153mm rainfall in 13 hours—8am to 9pm—as recorded by BMC’s automatic weather stations. Byculla received 162mm in the same period. The India Meteorological Department’s Colaba observatory, an indicator for south Mumbai, recorded 157mm rainfall, while its Santacruz observatory, an indicator for the rest of Mumbai, saw 64mm between 8.30am and 8.30pm.

The island city, also the area which saw the most number of rain-related problems, received 108mm in three hours—5.30pm to 8.30pm. Bhandup and Mulund (172mm and 112mm respectively between 2am and 5pm) were among the few areas in the suburbs that received triple-digit rainfall. In stark contrast, there was Malad which received just 20mm, Kandivli 24mm and Goregaon 26mm. While the neighbouring Thane recorded 120mm, Bhiwandi recorded 210mm rainfall in 24 hours. In Navi Mumbai, the 24-hour rainfall was 153mm.

The rains brought along the usual partners: Water-logging and traffic jams. Though several low-lying areas in Mumbai were water-logged, leading to traffic snarls, the BMC decided to put the flooded areas’ figure at just 12. The usual offender, Hindmata Junction, forced municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta to visit the spot and take stock. The BMC passed the buck to rain Gods and its officials said water-logging in Parel, Sion and Kurla was caused due to nearly 100mm rainfall in a very short span of time.

“There was knee-level water-logging at Hindmata Junction after just one hour of rain. Shops had to be shut and water was being pumped out of them,” said Sheetal Porwal, a local. She also said schools reopen on Monday after summer vacation and school buses will not come to pick up children if this happens after every downpour. Railway tracks too were flooded, delaying local trains by nearly 20-25 minutes.

Amid this chaos, BMC said its performance this year is better compared to last year as water receded quickly. Mehta said, “3,000 BMC staffers were on the road on Saturday. We managed to minimize waterlogging problems as we have paid attention to each flooding spot by widening the drainage system in those areas.” said Mehta. He added that on Saturday there was no problem at some spots that usually flood every year.
