Sorrowful fans watch Team India exit

PUNE: After high expectations, came the great disappointment. Traffic on the usually busy city roads, which was thin since morning, remained so even after it became clear that India had surrendered the cup. Traffic on social networking sites, however, picked up as fans trolled the cricketers.

Many supporters took the humour route on Twitter to vent their frustration. The #WontGiveItBack made way for 'Maybe now #we_will_give_it_back'.

Inside college cafeterias, the volume of televisions telecasting the India-Australia match was turned up all the way, but on Thursday, cheers that usually drown out commentary were few and far between.

Halfway through the Indian innings, the crowd had started thinning out and when the last partnership anchored by Mahendra Singh Dhoni ended with his run-out, Aishwarya Ingle and her friends decided to leave as well.

"There really is no point in watching this match anymore. We have exams coming up, but we had all come down to watch it together. It has been a disappointment," she said as she walked away, leaving only a handful of spectators behind.

"It is not a good feeling. We should have fought for the win. We had hoped for a close game for the semi-final, but this was most disappointing," said Amit Jambhekar, an IT professional who had called all his friends over to his place so that they could cheer India on.

Disappointed cricket fans, many of whom had made arrangements hoping to watch Team India in the finals, had to change plans for Sunday.

"We had booked a table at a sports lounge for the final match. Some of our friends were coming from Mumbai to watch the match, but now we have cancelled those plans," said Rishabh Mehta, a college student. He still commended India's performance in the tournament so far.

Manoj Singh, a businessman, had arranged for a party at his house on Sunday so that everyone could watch the match. "The party is still on, just that we won't be watching India play. We would have enjoyed more if India were playing, but nevertheless they played well," he said.

Others still plan to watch the final match, many of them rooting for New Zealand to lift the trophy. "It won't be the final we had hoped for, but New Zealand have made it to a World Cup final for the very first time. I'm backing them for the match on Sunday," said Abbas entrepreneur Patwa.

Some optimists looked further into the future, taking solace in the unbeaten track record of the Indian team until their semi-final encounter.

"After watching all the matches and the brave show put up by our team in the semi-final, I strongly feel that our chance of winning the next World Cup is very high. My expectation is definitely high. I am not disappointed, but have become more optimistic for the Indian team now," said Shailesh Sant, a software professional, who got together with teammates of a cricket club that they play for.

Fare to next station cheaper than platform ticket

Hubballi: Starting April 1, Rs 10 will get you entry to Hubballi railway station platform, while Rs 5 will take you to Unkal, 20km away. Or Kundgol. Or Kusugal. That's the minimum fare on an unreserved ticket.

People chary of paying up Rs 10 for a few minutes of farewells on the platform, have already found a way to get paisa-wise: buy a general ticket for Rs 5, spend time on the platform with family and walk coolly out of the station - Rs 5 saved.

Such shades of Scrooge are apparent among our folk who are looking to take advantage of an option provided, wittingly or otherwise, by the railway ministry itself.

The railway ministry has decided to increase the rate of platform tickets from Rs 5 to Rs 10 from April 1. It has also allowed divisional railway managers to increase the platform ticket rate beyond Rs 10 for occasions like fairs, rallies and festivals, the intention being to control the rush on platforms.

Passengers have been quick to spot the irony of the situation - that the minimum fare for ordinary trains is Rs 5, 50% less than the proposed rate of a platform ticket. They also know that no one can object to them walking on to the platform, armed with a ticket for Rs 5 - it may be unethical but perfectly legal, and probably happens only in India. Receiving family members and saying goodbyes is a deep-rooted Indian travelling tradition which few violate.

A clerk at Hubballi station recalled that this was happening regularly till October 7, 2013, when the minimum journey fare was Rs 3 and the platform ticket rate was Rs 5. "When the minimum fare was raised to Rs 5, on par with a platform ticket, visitors started buying platform tickets. Now it will be back to square one," he said.

A lady clerk, who worked at Bengaluru City station earlier, said this is common in the metro too. Passengers buy a ticket to Malleswaram, Cantonment or Nayandahalli stations for Rs 3 to evade paying Rs 5 for a platform ticket. "This was the general fare for ordinary trains then," she recalled.

As unreserved tickets can be bought only an hour before the train arrives, passengers have found a way out of such tight situations too: they buy tickets for any ordinary train headed in any direction, at any time.

Naveen Parapur, a construction worker in Hubballi, recalled that he often bought tickets to Unkal, Kusugal or Kundgol -- stations on Hubballi's outskirts but on different routes - for Rs 3 just to reach the platform. "I will do this now too. I will certainly not buy a platform ticket for Rs 10," Naveen said.

Mahendra Singhi, member of the Divisional Railway Users' Consultative Committee, said the ministry's move lacks practical sense. "The ministry itself is promoting this unethical practice. Seeing off and receiving family is our tradition, the ministry should look on it as a service rather than as a commercial opportunity. It should maintain the same fare for platform tickets or reduce it," he felt.

CANNOT TAKE ACTION

It has come to our notice that the minimum journey fare is less than the proposed rate of the platform ticket. As journey tickets are given one hour before the arrival of a particular train, visitors cannot buy such tickets all the time. If they do this to evade buying platform tickets, they cannot be prosecuted according to the existing guidelines.

MBBS students who left midway can resume course

MBBS students who could not complete their under-graduate medical course in due time can complete their course from the point where they had left the course. The only requirement is 75 per cent attendance in a subject for appearing in the examination.

Interestingly, the Medical Educations Regulation do not provide for any time-limit in which the MBBS course is required to be completed. Hence, for an MBBS student, owing to an exigency/exceptional circumstances has left the course in between, is permitted to resume his studies from the point from where he had left the course.

“The course can be completed by him after meeting the attendance requirement. In this regard, no duration for the gap period is required to be provided for, as the regulations do not prescribe the time duration in which the MBBS course of four and a half years with an additional internship of one year is required to be completed,” reads the regulation.

The only requirement is 75 per cent compulsory attendance inclusive of attendance in non-lecture teaching i.e. seminars, group discussions, tutorials, demonstrations, practicals, hospital (tertiary, secondary, primary) posting and bed side clinics.

While, in the recent executive committee meeting it was decided that a policy is needed to be formulated regarding joining/re-admission of candidates to MBBS course for which a legal opinion on what should be the duration of the leave allowed should be sought. The committee has given permission to three students to resume their studies after they availed long leaves. “As such the concept of leave of any kind whatsoever is not envisaged in the MBBS course,” reads the minutes of the meeting.

The executive committee of the council observed the matter with regard to re-admission of one George Nisha T.K. George, Jubilee Mission Medical College & Research Institute, Thrissur, after long leave was placed before the executive committee of the council.

The committee decided to allow Ms George Nisha T.K. in the MBBS course since she was admitted to final MBBS course during 2013 after availing long leave on medical grounds.

“Further, the executive committee of the council decided to allow the application of these three candidates and permit them to resume their studies,” it adds further.

சென்னை: வெயில் அதிகமாக இருப்பதால் இருசக்கர வாகனங்களில் டேங்க் முழுவதும் பெட்ரோல் நிரப்பினால் வாகனம் தீப்பிடித்து எரிய வாய்ப்புள்ளது என எண்ணெய் நிறுவனங்கள் எச்சரிக்கை விடுத்துள்ளது.

இதுகுறித்து விடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ள எச்சரிக்கையில், ''கோடை வெயில் அதிகமாக இருக்கிறது. சென்னை உள்பட பல நகரங்களில் வெயிலின் தாக்கம் கடுமையாக உள்ளது. இந்நிலையில், பெரும்பாலான இருசக்கர வாகனங்கள் திறந்த வெளியில் கடும் வெயிலில் தான் நிறுத்தி வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.

இந்த வாகனங்களில் டேங்க் முழுவதும் பெட்ரோல் நிரப்பப்பட்டிருந்தால், கடுமையான வெப்பம் காரணமாக டேங்க் வெடிக்கவும், தீ பிடிக்கவும் வாய்ப்பு இருக்கிறது. எனவே டேங்க் முழுவதும் பெட்ரோல் நிரப்புவதற்கு பதிலாக அரை அல்லது முக்கால் டேங்க் பெட்ரோல் நிரப்பி மீதி காற்று நிரம்பி இருக்கும்படி பார்த்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டும்'' எனக் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இதுதான் கடைசி உலகக்கோப்பை போட்டியா? - தோனி பதில்

சிட்னி: எனக்கு இப்போது 33 வயதுதான் ஆகிறது. அந்தப் போட்டித் தொடர் முடிந்த பிறகு  2019 உலகக்கோப்பை போட்டி குறித்து யோசிக்கலாம் என இந்திய கிரிக்கெட் அணியின் கேப்டன் தோனி தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

உல கோப்பை கிரிக்கெட் போட்டியின் அரையிறுதி போட்டியில் இன்று இந்தியாவும்-ஆஸ்திரேலியாவும் மோதின. இதில் இந்தியா தோல்வி அடைந்தது.

இதன் பிறகு இந்திய அணியின் கேப்டன் தோனி செய்தியாளர்களிடம் கூறுகையில், ''ஆஸ்திரேலியா 350 ரன்கள் வரை எடுக்கும் சூழ்நிலை இருந்தது. ஆனால், நாங்கள் அதை கட்டுப்படுத்தினோம். 300 ரன்களுக்கும் மேலான இலக்கை துரத்துவது என்பது கடினமானதுதான்.

‘இதுதான் உங்களது கடைசி உலகக்கோப்பையா?’ என்று கேட்டதற்கு, ''எனக்கு இப்போது 33 வயதுதான் ஆகிறது. நல்ல உடல்தகுதியுடன் இருப்பதோடு, நன்றாக விளையாடியும் வருகிறேன்.

அடுத்த ஆண்டு டி20 உலகக்கோப்பை நடைபெறவுள்ளது. அந்தப் போட்டித் தொடர் முடிந்த பிறகு  2019 உலகக்கோப்பை போட்டி குறித்து யோசிக்கலாம். இப்போதைக்கு எதுவும் கூற முடியாது'' என்றார்.

அடக்கொடுமையே...இந்தியா வெற்றி பெற நாக்கை அறுத்துக்கொண்ட வாலிபர்!

வேலூர்: இன்று நடந்த உலகக்கோப்பை கிரிக்கெட் போட்டியின் அரையிறுதி ஆட்டத்தில் இந்திய அணி வெற்றி பெற வேண்டும் என வேண்டி வாலிபர் ஒருவர் நாக்கை அறுத்துக்கொண்ட சம்பவம் வேலூர் மாவட்டத்தில் அதிர்ச்சியை ஏற்படுத்தி உள்ளது.

இன்றைய போட்டியில் ஆஸ்திரேலிய அணியை இந்திய அணி எதிர்கொண்ட நிலையில், ஆட்டத்தின் போக்கு தொடக்கத்திலேயே இந்தியாவுக்கான வெற்றி வாய்ப்பை மங்கச் செய்தது.

இந்நிலையில் வாணியம்பாடியை சேர்ந்த தீவிர கிரிக்கெட் ரசிகரான சுதாகர் என்ற வாலிபர், இந்தியா வெற்றி பெற வேண்டும் என வேண்டி, போட்டி தொடங்குவதற்கு முன்பே, கோவிலுக்கு சென்று தனது நாக்கை அறுத்துக்கொண்டார். இதனை அறிந்து அதிர்ச்சியடைந்த அவரது உறவினர்கள், உடனடியாக அவரை அரசு மருத்துவமனைக்கு கொண்டு சென்றனர். அங்கு அவருக்கு மருத்துவர்கள் தீவிர சிகிச்சை அளித்து வருகின்றனர்.

இருப்பினும் சுதாகரால் இனிமேல் பேச முடியாது என மருத்துவர்கள் தெரிவித்தனர்.

பேச முடியாத நிலையில் இருக்கும் சுதாகருக்கு என்ன நடந்தது என்பது குறித்து அவருடைய தம்பி ராஜீவ்காந்தி நம்மிடம் கூறுகையில், " அண்ணனுக்கு கல்யாணம் ஆகி இப்பதான் ஒன்றரை வயசுல ஒரு குழந்தை இருக்கு. அவரு பெருசா ஒண்ணும் படிக்கலை 5வது வரைக்கும்தான் படிச்சிருக்காரு. ஆனா கிரிக்கெட்டுனா ரொம்ப உசுரு. இன்னைக்கு காலைல ஊர்ல இருக்குற வேடியப்பன் கோயிலுக்கு கற்பூரம் ஏத்திட்டு சாமி கும்பிட்டு வர போய்ட்டிருந்தார்.

அங்க போனவரு சாமிக்கு கற்பூரம் ஏத்திட்டு கத்தியால நாக்கை அறுத்து சாமிக்கு வேண்டுதல் செஞ்சி இருக்காரு.வலி தாங்க முடியாம ஒரு வீட்டுக்கு போன் பண்ணி பேச பாத்திருக்கார். அவரால பேச முடியல. உடனே பக்கத்துல இருந்த ஒரு பெண்மணிகிட்ட போனை குடுத்து சைகையால சொல்லி பேசச் சொல்லி இருக்கார். தகவல் தெரிஞ்சு ஓடி வந்து பார்த்தப்ப நாக்கு தனியே கோயில்ல கிடந்துச்சு. ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் சேர்த்திருக்கோம்.

இனிமே ஜென்மத்துக்கும் பேச்சு வர வாய்ப்பு இல்லைனு சொல்லி வாயில தையல் போட்டிருக்காங்க.ஏன் இப்படி பண்ணேனு கேட்டேன். பேச முடியாம கிரிக்கெட் பௌலிங் போடுவது போலவும், பேட்டிங் செய்வது போலவும் சைகை காட்டி சாமி கும்பிட்டு காட்டுனார். இந்தியா ஜெயிக்கணும்னு இப்படி பண்ணுனியான்னு கேட்டேன். ஆமான்னு தலையை ஆட்டி அழுதார்.

இந்த அளவுக்கு கிரிக்கெட் ரசிகரா இருப்பாருன்னு நினைக்கல’’’ என்றார் பதட்டத்துடன்.

நாக்கை அறுத்துக் கொண்ட இந்த சுதாகருக்கு, இன்று இந்தியா தோற்றது தெரியாதாம். நம்மிடமும் சைகை காட்டிக் கொண்டிந்தார்.அவரிடம் உண்மையை சொல்லாமல் கிளம்பிவிட்டோம்.
