CHENNAI: A former government official with two wives passed away recently. Despite pressure exerted by the first wife, the issue of an heirship certificate was stalled upon an appeal by the second wife. The estate of the deceased is presently managed by the first wife and the second wife is in a dire strait, since the deceased died intestate. Is there a remedy for the second wife to claim her fair share of the estate including the family pension that the deceased
entitled to?

A government servant cannot have two wives living. The second marriage even under the Hindu law is invalid. Even for a Mohammaden government servant, he has to seek prior permission for his second marriage. Therefore, the second living wife will get nothing from the government. The recent judgment of the Madras High Court is erroneous. However, the learned judge found that the first wife died and the second person in the life of the government was though a living relationship, a presumption of marriage was made by the judge to grant relief.

I am selling a piece of land for a certain value to a buyer who pays through a bank loan. He says that approximately sixty per cent of the agreed loan amount will be sanctioned and it will be paid on the date of sale and the balance amount will be paid by issuing post-dated cheques within six to eight months from the period of sale. Can I register a sale deed with the actual value and mentioning the paid draft amount through loan and the post-dated cheques issued by him? The registrar wouldn’t have any issue with the registration process, as I am going to mention the sale value and the payment method in the sale deed.

On the day of registration, full consideration should have been passed on to the property owner
without which the registration will not be done.The registrar will have to make an endorsement that consideration admitted by the seller. Your stand will make the document as ‘agreement to sell’ and not a sale deed.

மேலும், கர்நாடக மாநிலத்தின் சில பகுதிகளில் இருந்தும் பீட்ரூட் வருகிறது. கடந்த இரு வாரங்களாக வரத்து அதிகரித்திருப்பதன் காரணமாக அதன் விலை கிலோ ரூ.8 ஆக வீழ்ச்சி அடைந்துள்ளது.

பீட்ரூட் விலை வீழ்ச்சி அடைந்திருப்பது தொடர்பாக கோயம்பேடு சந்தை காய்கறி வியாபாரிகள் கூறும்போது, "பருவமழை முடிந்த பின்னர், பனிப்பொழிவு ஏற்படும் காலங்களில் பீட்ரூட் விளைச்சல் அதிகமாக இருக்கும். அதனால் தற்போது வரத்து அதிகரித்து, அதன் விலை வீழ்ச்சி அடைந்துள்ளது. இன்னும் ஒரு மாத காலத்துக்கு இதே நிலை நீடிக்கும்" என்றனர்.

காதல் என்ற வார்த்தை மிக வசீகரமானது. காதல் என்று சொல்லும் போதே மனசெல்லாம் றெக்க கட்டி பறப்பது போல ஒரு உணர்வு தோன்றும். காதல் என்பது காற்றை போல. அதை உணரத்தான் முடியும். பார்க்க முடியாது. கன்னம் சுருங்க காதலியும், மீசை நரைத்திட காதலனும் வாழ்வின் கரைகளை காணும் வரை தொடர்வதுதான் காதல் என்கின்றனர் கவிஞர்கள்.

'காதலர் தினம்' உருவான கதை சுவராஸ்யமானது. காதலர் தினத்துக்கு முன்னோடியாக கருதப்படும் பாதிரியார் வேலன்டைன் ரோம் சாம்ராஜ்யத்தை சேர்ந்தவர். 14ம் நுாற்றாண்டில் ரோம் அரசர் இரண்டாம் கிளாடியஸ், இளைஞர்களை ராணுவத்தில் சேர அழைத்தார். இதற்கு வரவேற்பு இல்லாததால் காதல் மற்றும் திருமணத்திற்கு தடை விதித்தார். இதனால் இளைஞர்கள் அதிகளவில் ராணுவத்தில் சேருவர் என்பது அவரது எண்ணம்.

இதனை மீறி பாதிரியார் வேலன்டைன், காதலிக்கும் இளைஞர்களுக்கு ரகசிய திருமணம் செய்து வைத்தார். இதனால் ஆத்திரமடைந்த அரசன் அவருக்கு மரண தண்டனை விதித்தார். அவரது நினைவுநாளையே 'வேலன்டைன் தினமாக' இளைஞர்கள் கொண்டாட தொடங்கினர். 20ம் நுாற்றாண்டின் பிற்பகுதியில்தான் வேலன்டைன் தினம் 'காதலர் தினமாக' மாறியது.

உண்மை அவசியம்:

இன்றைய காதலர்கள் வாழ்க்கை பற்றி எவ்வித தெளிவான கருத்தும் இல்லாமல் அழகு, பணம், வேலை போன்ற காரணங்களை பார்த்து அவசரப்பட்டு காதலில் விழுகின்றனர். பள்ளி மாணவர்கள் கூட காதலிப்பதாக கூறும் நிலை வந்து விட்டது. இது வாழ்க்கைக்கு ஏற்றதல்ல. தன்னை காதலிக்காத குற்றத்திற்காக பெண்ணிற்கு பல்வேறு இடையூறுகள் கொடுக்கும் அவலமும் அரங்கேறுகிறது.

காதல் கைகூடவில்லை என தற்கொலை செய்பவர்களும் இருக்கிறார்கள். இது தவிர்க்கப்பட வேண்டியது. காதல் திருமணம் செய்தவர்கள் மட்டும் அதிர்ஷ்டசாலிகள் அல்ல. திருமணத்துக்குப் பின் காதலிப்பவர்கள் அதை விட அதிர்ஷ்டசாலிகள். உண்மையான காதல் எப்போதுமே அழகானது.

Over 1 lakh buildings could be on ‘objectionable lands’ in the city

Enumeration by Revenue officials was resisted by residents at many places; the absence of public consultation has led to a lack of clarity and widespread fear

Over 60,000 buildings in the city are located on ‘objectionable lands’. This number could double when the Chennai Collectorate completes its enumeration in a fortnight.

The enumeration of ‘objectionable land’ and ‘unobjectionable land’ in the city should have been over in October itself. As the survey has created a scare among residents in many localities, leading to their non-cooperation with the Revenue officials, there has been a delay in completing it.

The enumeration has twin objectives. First, it is intended to help residents get patta for the property developed on ‘unobjectionable lands’ such as natham poromboke.

Second, the government plans to demolish all buildings which have been constructed in ‘objectionable lands’ such as marshland, rivers, lakes and ponds.

Ecologically sensitive

So far, the Revenue officials in each of the 16 taluks in the city have identified at least 4,000 buildings standing on ‘objectionable lands’. For example, the Pallikaranai marshland has at least 1,025 buildings developed in ‘objectionable lands’ near the ecologically sensitive area.

“The Forest Department alone has enumerated over 600 buildings, all of which have to be demolished,” said an official. Residents and former councillors have pointed to the need for more manpower to complete the enumeration and help people understand the process.

Former Corporation Councillor of Madipakkam M. R. Nareshkumar said that many residents in areas such as Indira Nagar, New Colony Main Road and Sundaramurthy Street are worried because their houses have been constructed on the Adambakkam lake. “Officials have not yet surveyed the lake area. They are unable to complete the enumeration because of lack of manpower,” he said.

P. Jagatha, a resident of Madipakkam, said the officials should explain the impact of the enumeration to all the residents to prevent the spread of misleading information.

“The former councillors are unable to help us. We are unable to talk to the MLAs. There is no public consultation. Revenue officials visiting households also refuse to explain about the enumeration when we ask them. We just give them Aadhaar and other information. We are yet to have any clarity. We are scared,” she said.

Revenue Department officials said they had not conducted public consultations to explain the enumeration to all residents as it could lead to law and order problems in many areas.

“We just have to complete the enumeration on time. We will submit the data on buildings on ‘objectionable lands and unobjectionable lands’,” said an official. Revenue officials said that after the completion of the enumeration, the number of buildings likely to be demolished in the city could well be over 1 lakh. “The government will take a decision on the demolition of buildings,” the official pointed out.

Better development

Similarly, more than 1 lakh residents in lands such as natham poromboke are expected to get patta, improving the prospect of better urban development in the area.

For example, the issuance of patta for residents with “temporary patta” issued for saleable natham poromboke lands may offer them the scope to build more than ground plus one floor in the land, officials said. Former Corporation Councillor P. Govindaraj of Mugalivakkam said most of the village in erstwhile Mugalivakkam was natham poromboke.

“The enumeration will help many residents who have purchased land in the area,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Revenue officials in many areas of the city are trying to complete the work despite resistance from residents. “We will complete the work in 15 days. The enumeration has been delayed because of rain,” said a Revenue official.

Invest or repay? This is a question that never has an off-season. Here’s a typical example. A reader mailed me, saying that he has a housing loan on which he is paying an interest of 11% a year. There’s no problemhe is able to pay the EMI comfortably out of his income. However, he now finds that he also has some cash accumulated which he can invest. He wanted to know what was the better option: Repay some of his housing loan before schedule, or invest the money in an equity mutual fund for the long-term.

This is not an uncommon dilemma. In fact, it’s possible that practically every salary earner who takes a housing loan faces it at some point. You take a loan at an EMI you can afford. Eventually, your income increases and you find that can pay back more of the loan than you had originally planned. If you were to ask this question of a financial planner, the chances are that he would tell you to repay the loan first. That advice is based on what is a first principle of personal financial planning—clear your debts before you save. That principle is a sound one and should almost always be followed. I said ‘almost’ always. If the choice were between clearing expensive credit card debt and saving, then clearly, one should do that. The same probably holds for most consumer loans, including big ticket ones like cars and such. This principle is most relevant to people who try to borrow and invest.

However, there are some caveats to the standard advice. On the face of it, long-term investments in an equity fund will possibly fetch higher returns than the interest that savers are paying on housing loans. In the past, SIP returns have been higher for most 10-year periods. This situation is roughly true for everyone who is trying to save while servicing a housing loan.

In the case of a housing loan, the effective trade-off is even more in favour of not repaying the loan early because of the tax breaks one gets on the interest paid. If you compensate for that and calculate the real effective interest rate, then you’ll find that your savings have to cross an even lower bar. The actual advantage you get from having taken the loan would also include the fact that you no longer have to pay rent. It’s only when someone has built up a large enough financial saving that is liquid and accessible, and is in a situation where no great expense is anticipated that it would be justifiable to retire the loan instead of saving.

On top of that there’s another side to this, which is human psychology. If someone has little or no savings at all, then no matter what the situation, no matter what the interest rates, he or she would prefer to carry the loan but have some savings. In such a situation, it would make sense to have access to the savings if they are needed, even if the savings are fetching the same or less returns than the one is paying on the debt one has taken. In other words, the rules for the first bit of saving you do—emergency money, so to speak—are different. Having instant access to an emergency fund is worth any kind of disadvantage that an interest rate differential brings.

The city’s garbage dumpyards at Perungudi and Kodungaiyur continue to receive plastics every day from bins, door-to-door collection and street sweeping. This, despite the ban on single-use plastics, in place since January 1.

“Though over 80% of the 140-odd licensed manufacturing units in the State have shifted to manufacturing permissible plastic items and the others have just shut shop and left, banned plastics seem to be available in the market. From where they come, one cannot say. But the ban has led to the shutting down of legitimate units and seems to have facilitated illegal trade,” said B. Swaminathan of the Tamil Nadu Plastics Manufacturers' Association.

This is due to the fact that most of the 27,195 enumerated street vendors and a large number of licensed traders continue to use banned plastics in various parts of the city. After the ban, the bigger shops, including supermarkets, switched to cloth or jute bags. A section of consumers too converted. “It is the small trader and road-side shops that are finding it difficult to switch. If banana leaves were available in place of plastic covers, flower vendors would gladly change back to leaves. But those are not available. Similarly, alternatives that are available in the market are not cheap or easily accessible. MNCs that use multi-layer plastics for packaging have also not been reined in by the ban,” said A.M.Vikramaraja, president, Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangankalin Peramaippu. “Though many residents have switched to carrying cloth bags and associations are working towards reducing garbage going to dumpyards, banned plastics are still being used by street vendors and small shops. This is because alternatives to banned plastics are not affordable and these banned items are still easily available. The government should explore alternatives to plastic bags for customers,” said V.S. Jayaraman, of T. Nagar Residents Welfare Association.

Nungambakkam resident N. Ramesh said the government should advise retail shops to give the customers bags made of newspaper to carry the items they buy. “The retail outlets sell poor quality cloth bags for ₹15, making a profit from the sale of such bags. This is unethical. The shopkeepers refuse to even wrap products in a newspaper. I request the government to intervene and direct the civic agencies to regulate such practices,” said Babu, another resident.

Enforcement on

For its part, the Greater Chennai Corporation’s sanitary inspectors have seized 264 tonnes of banned plastics from 2.63 lakh premises across the city in the past eight months, collecting ₹55.04 lakh as penalties.

Officials in zones such as Kodambakkam, Royapuram, Anna Nagar, Adyar, Perungudi and Valasaravakkam have seized the largest quantities of banned plastic products. Chennai Corporation has claimed that the seized plastics were being shredded for road relaying. But the banned plastics have not been used for relaying most stretches in the city in the past few months, officials said. Inadequate manpower, particularly among sanitary inspectors, has led to challenges in enforcement of the ban, they pointed out.

Officials also estimated the quantum of banned plastics sent to dumpyards had come down. However, there is no study on how much it has come down by. “The quantum of banned plastics reaching dumpyards has reportedly reduced by 50%. We will carry out a waste characterisation study shortly,” said N. Mahesan, Chief Engineer (Solid Waste Management). Former DMK councillor Deva Jawahar said the civic body was unable to enforce the ban on plastics because of the transport of banned plastics from neighbouring States and purchases by small traders.

Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department secretary Harmander Singh said the department was taking steps to implement the ban. “A huge quantity of plastic has been seized and fines imposed. All big fruit and vegetable shops and retail showrooms have changed to non-plastic materials. So it will be wrong to say plastic has come back. It is a big challenge and everyone, including media, has to play a role. Our drive against plastic continues,” he said.

மலேசியாவில் நடைபெற்ற உலகத் தமிழ் மாநாட்டுக்கே இங்கிருந்துதான் இட்லிகள் ஏற்றுமதி செய்யப்பட்டது என்பது யாருக்கும் தெரியாத ஆச்சரியமான உண்மை.

தினந்தோறும் அதிகாலை 2 மணிக்குத் தொடங்கும் இவர்களது இட்லி வியாபாரம் இரவு 11 மணி வரை நடைபெறுகிறது. மொத்த ஆர்டரின்பேரில் இட்லிகளை தயாரித்து விற்பனை செய்யும் இவர்கள், சில்லரை விற்பனையிலும் ஈடுபட்டு வருகின்றனர்.

சாதா இட்லி, மினி இட்லி, ரவா இட்லி, நெய் இட்லி, காஞ்சிபுரம் இட்லி, பெங்களூரு இட்லி என இவர்களிடம் இட்லியிலேயே பல்வேறு வெரைட்டிகள் கிடைக்கிறது. சட்னியும் பல்வேறு ரகங்களில், சுவைகளில் தரமாக கிடைக்கிறது.

சேமிப்பு என்பது பலவிதம். வங்கிக் கணக்கில் சேமித்து வைப்பது, முதலீடு, தங்கம் வாங்குவது, சீட்டு கட்டுவது என அதற்கு ஏராளமான வழிகள் உள்ளன. செலவிட இருக்கும் வழிகளோடு ஒப்பிட்டால் சேமிக்கும் வழிகள் குறைவுதான். ஆனால் அதையெல்லாம் தாண்டி நீங்கள் சேமிக்கிறீர்கள் என்றால் அதற்கு நிச்சயம் பாராட்டுகளும், லைக்குகளும் உண்டு.

பெரும்பாலான பெண்கள் தங்கள் வீட்டில் இருக்கும் மசாலாப் பெட்டிகளில் பணத்தை சேமித்து வைத்துக் கொள்வார்கள். அதை வைத்து தங்க நகைகள், வீட்டுக்குத் தேவையான பொருட்களை வாங்குவது வழக்கம்.

சரி, இதில் என்ன தவறு இருக்கிறது என்று கேட்கலாம். இதில் எந்தத் தவறும் இல்லை. ஏன் என்றால் சேமிப்பு என்பது எந்த வகையில் இருந்தாலும் அது வரவேற்கத்தக்கதே. ஆனால், அதில் நமக்கு இவ்வளவு லாபம் கிடைத்தது என்று மகிழ்கிறோமே அங்குதான் ஒரு சின்னக் குறை இருக்கிறது.

CHENNAI: US Ambassador to India, Kenneth I Juster honoured Chennai’s famed chronicler S Muthiah, dedicating a collection of his books for permanent display in the American Centre in the City, which turned 50 on Tuesday, according to a consulate statement.

The US Consulate General in Chennai, Robert Burgess, invited the public to visit the American Centre and tour its 50th-anniversary historical photo exhibit and the new ‘S Muthiah Collection’. Held on the eve of the 380th founding of Madras, the event celebrated the longstanding cultural, educational, and commercial ties between the United States and South India.

“As we mark five decades of operating the Consulate and American Centre at this location in Gemini Circle, we celebrate not only our iconic building, but the people - students, dignitaries, American Centre patrons, exchange participants, business people, scholars, and staff - who have brought special meaning and great substance to the relationship of the United States of America with this city and the larger South India region,’’ said Juster, according to the statement.

He was joined by K Pandiarajan, Minister for Tamil Official Language and Tamil Culture; Chennai historian, V Sriram; US Consul General Robert Burgess; and distinguished guests and patrons of the American Centre.

Official US presence in Chennai stretches back to 1794 when President George Washington appointed US businessman William Abbott as the first Consular Agent to Madras. The current US Consulate building located at Gemini Circle, was dedicated on January 3, 1969, by then US Ambassador Chester Bowles, Madras Governor Sardar Ujjal Singh, and Minister VR Nedunchezhian.

Stiff penalty for drunk driving kicks in under new law
The fine imposed for the offence is ₹10,000

For the first time in Tamil Nadu, a Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court made a motorist cough up ₹10,000 fine for drunken driving and another ₹15,000 for driving under the influence of alcohol and without a valid driving licence on Wednesday.

The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, was passed by the Rajya Sabha on July 31 and on August 9, the President of India gave his assent and it was notified in the gazette. An increase in penalties has been stipulated under the law. Following this, the Chennai traffic police had issued an advisory indicating the new fines for various violations.

On Wednesday, B. Santosh, who is additional in-charge of XXII Metropolitan Magistrate, Egmore, fined motorist Santosh ₹10,000 for drunken driving and another motorist Viswa ₹15,000 for drunken driving and not having a licence.

From Wednesday morning, the photos of the receipts signed by the cashier of the XXII Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, were widely circulated on social media platforms. A few policemen claimed they were earlier instructed that the revised fines would come into effect from August 16, but later were informed that it will be done from August 20.

“For all other offences, the fine amount appears on the e-challan device and he/she can pay it through net banking, post offices or using credit/debit cards and other modes of payment. However, for drunken driving, the motorist has to pay the fine in the mobile court only,” a police officer said.

“Once a law is passed, the Judiciary does not need a separate circular to implement it,” said a source from the court. On Wednesday, the same magistrate ordered two-day imprisonment and a fine for a man who drove a heavy vehicle under the influence of alcohol in Periamet police station limits.

Senior transport and traffic police officials welcomed the move. “On an average, 33 persons die in Tamil Nadu every day due to accidents caused by drunk drivers. So such heavy fines will be a deterrent,” said an official from the transport department.

ED explores leads on PC ‘getting ₹300cr in bribes’

Widening its probe against senior Congress leader P Chidambaram in the INX Media money laundering case, the Enforcement Directorate is now working on “leads” allegedly suggesting that the former finance minister received ₹300 crore in bribes for Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approvals to different companies.

According to sources, the new line of investigation by ED as well as CBI will cover the FIPB approvals granted to Diageo Scotland Ltd, Katara Holdings, Essar Steel Ltd and Elforge Ltd.

As in the case of Aircel Maxis and INX Media, the bribe money was allegedly put in a shell company operated by Chidambaram’s son, Karti, who was recently elected to Lok Sabha. Put together, Chidmabarams allegedly collected ₹300 crore in bribes from companies including Aircel Maxis and INX Media.

“This is a political witchhunt and media leaks. I have nothing to do with INX or the FIPB. All my assets and liabilities are duly declared in statutory and regulatory filings,” said Karti Chidambaram in his reaction on Twitter.

However, sources in the probe agencies maintained that Karti had launched several shell companies both in India and abroad in which the kickbacks were received. The proceeds were deposited in nearly two dozen accounts in foreign banks.

The agency claimed that the deposits in the shell companies were used for meeting personal expenditure of Chidambarams and for purchasing several properties in Malaysia, UK and Spain.

The ED sources also alleged that Chidambarams owned the shell company in India which received ₹300 crore from another shell company registered in British Virgin Islands (BVI). The two directors of the shell company, a school teacher and her husband, have already been questioned by the agency. The couple were asked to make a will where they transferred all their shares to the daughter of Karti who also served as the executor of the will.

The agency has claimed that since Chidambaram did not cooperate with the investigation, withholding information which the agency eventually managed to source from foreign countries by issuing Letters Rogatories.

சென்னை: தமிழகத்தில் தங்கம் விற்பனையில் முதல் முறையாக 22 காரட் ஆபரண தங்கம் பவுன் விலை 29 ஆயிரம் ரூபாயை தாண்டி புதிய சாதனை படைத்துள்ளது.

அமெரிக்கா- சீனா இடையிலான வர்த்தக போர் உள்ளிட்ட சர்வதேச நிலவரங்களால் அமெரிக்க டாலர் மதிப்பு குறைந்து வருகிறது. இதனால் டாலரில் அதிகளவில் முதலீடு செய்திருந்த முதலீட்டாளர்கள் தங்கத்தில் முதலீடு செய்து வருகின்றனர். இதையடுத்து சர்வதேச சந்தையில் ஜூலை இறுதியில் இருந்து தங்கம் விலை உயர்ந்து வருகிறது. இந்தியாவிலும் தங்கம் விலை எப்போதும் இல்லாத வகையில் அதிகரித்து வருகிறது.

கடந்த 1ம் தேதி கிராம் தங்கம் 3,310 ரூபாய்க்கும் பவுன் 26 ஆயிரத்து 480 ரூபாய்க்கும் விற்றது. அதற்கு அடுத்த நாளே கிராம் 3,383 ரூபாயாகவும் பவுன் 27 ஆயிரத்து 64 ரூபாயாகவும் அதிகரித்து புதிய சாதனை படைத்தது. பின் ஐந்து நாட்களில் அதாவது 7ம் தேதி கிராம் தங்கம் 3,547 ரூபாய்; பவுன் 28 ஆயிரத்து 376 ரூபாய் என்ற புதிய உச்சத்தை எட்டியது. நேற்று முன்தினம் கிராம் தங்கம் 3,603 ரூபாய்க்கும் பவுன் 28 ஆயிரத்து 824 ரூபாய்க்கும் விற்பனை செய்யப்பட்டது. கிராம் வெள்ளி 49 ரூபாய்க்கு விற்பனையானது.

இந்நிலையில் நேற்று தங்கம் கிராமுக்கு 24 ரூபாய் அதிகரித்து 3627 ரூபாய்க்கு விற்பனையானது. பவுன் 192 ரூபாய் அதிகரித்து 29 ஆயிரத்து 16 ரூபாய்க்கு விற்பனை செய்யப்பட்டது. இதையடுத்து முதல் முறையாக பவுன் விலை 29 ஆயிரம் ரூபாயை தாண்டியுள்ளது. இரு வாரத்தில் மட்டும் தங்கத்தின் விலை பவுனுக்கு 2,536 ரூபாய் உயர்ந்துள்ளது. மாத இறுதிக்குள் 30 ஆயிரம் ரூபாயை தாண்டும் என எதிர்பார்க்கப்படுகிறது.

Chennai: Gold prices remained highly volatile on Tuesday as they touched all-time high levels during the early part of the session, only to fall Rs 1,300 per 10 gm later in the evening. In the Comex futures market, near-month contract of gold initially moved up to $1,546 per ounce during the intraday on Tuesday from the previous close of $1,519. With strong fundamentals supporting safe haven demand for gold, the Hong Kong protests acted as a geo-political trigger for increased purchases by investors, said Jateen Trivedi, Technical Research Analyst at Bonanza Portfolio.

The protests in Hong Kong against the Chinese government continued on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Argentina’s stock markets fell 35 per cent and the currency by 25 per cent after the president was trounced in the primary election. The currency’s fall was viewed by the markets in the back-drop of the ongoing currency war between the US and China. The trade war has been a pushing up gold prices in the past few days.

However, later in the evening on Tuesday US Trade Representative updated that additional tariffs on some Chinese goods, including cell phones and laptops, will be delayed till December 15. This saw a sharp rise in equity markets and sell-off in bullion.

From $1,546, gold prices came down to $1,490. Silver too fell from a high of $17.48 an ounce to $16.51.

In the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold had moved up to Rs 38,660, a new all-time high, from the previous day’s close of Rs 38,240. Silver had gained close to 2 per cent in the MCX to touch Rs 44,585. The rupee had added to the glitter of the gold when it further depreciated to six-month low of 71.4 on Tuesday.

However, after the trade update from the US, gold in the MCX too fell to a low of Rs 37,344, losing more than Rs 1,300 in a session. Silver too fell from Rs 44,585 per kg to Rs 43,250.

“Trade update has led to a knee-jerk reaction in the market. However, the broader fundamentals, which have been triggering the bull-run in bullion, are still intact. Hence we still expect that gold can move up further in the medium-term,’ said Trivedi.

“With gold coming closer to Rs 39,000 levels, it won’t take much longer to touch Rs 40,000. We might probably see those levels before Diwali if the fundamentals remain strong. In the international market, we can look forward for $1,600 - $1,650 levels,” he said.

“We expect gold to remain firm on various economic issues across the globe, although mild profit booking may keep prices under pressure near key resistance levels,’ said Abhishek Bansal, Chair-man, Abans Group.

VILLUPURAM: In such an incident that one could not have witnessed even in films, a couple got married before the corpse of groom’s dead father. The incident took place in Tindivanam on Friday.

D Alexander (30) from Singanur village in Tindivanam had his wedding with B Jagadeswari (24) scheduled on September 2. The couple are working as teachers at a private school.

While their wedding invitations were being sent to friends and relatives, the man’s ailing father Deivamani (50) died on Friday.

With a broken heart, Alexander decided to get married before his father’s dead body. Close relatives and family members were present when he had the mangalasutra handed from his father and tied the knot amidst the grief, said a relative of Jagadeswari. A wedding reception is likely to be held next month, said sources.

சென்னை புரசைவாக்கம் நெல் வயல் லேன் பகுதியைச் சேர்ந்தவர் சிவக்குமார். திருமணமான இவ ருக்கு குழந்தை இல்லை. அதனால், கடந்த ஆண்டு ஒரு நாட்டுக்கோழியை வாங்கி, அதற்கு பூஞ்சி என்று பெயரிட்டு பாசமாக வளர்த்து வந்தார். இவரது அக்காள் மகளும், ஐஏஎஸ் படிப்பவருமான தீபாவும் கோழி மீது அதிகம் பாசம் காட்டி வந்துள்ளார். கோழியும் தீபாவையே சுற்றிக் கொண்டு இருந்துள்ளது.

இந்நிலையில் கடந்த 4-ம் தேதி தான் அணிந்திருந்த தங்க கம் மலை கழட்டி வைத்துவிட்டு தீபா தலைவாரிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அப்போது, அவரை சுற்றி வந்த கோழி கம்மலை இரை என நினைத்து கொத்தி விழுங்கியுள்ளது. இதைப் பார்த்து அதிர்ச்சி அடைந்த தீபா, வீட்டில் உள்ளவர்களிடம் நடந்த சம்பவத்தை தெரிவித்தார். இதை யடுத்து, அண்ணாநகர் சாந்தி காலனியில் உள்ள கால்நடை டாக்டரிடம் கோழியை தூக்கிச் சென்றனர்.

எனக்கு கம்மல் முக்கியமில்லை. கோழியின் உயிர்தான் முக்கிய மென டாக்டரிடம் தீபா அழுதுள் ளார். அவரை சமாதானம் செய்த டாக்டர் கோழியை எக்ஸ்ரே எடுத் துப் பார்த்ததில், கோழியின் இரைப் பையில் கம்மல் இருப்பது தெரிய வந்தது. அறுவை சிகிச்சை செய்து கம்மலை வெளியே எடுத்துவிடலாம் என டாக்டர் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

இதையடுத்து, கடந்த 8-ம் தேதி அறுவை சிகிச்சைக்காக கோழியு டன் சிவக்குமார் சென்றார். கோழிக்கு மயக்க மருந்து கொடுத் தும், செயற்கை சுவாசம் அளித்தும் டாக்டர் அறுவை சிகிச்சையைத் தொடங்கினார். அரை மணி நேரம் நீடித்த அறுவை சிகிச்சையில் கோழியின் இரைப்பையில் குத்திக் கொண்டு இருந்த கம்மலை டாக்டர் எடுத்தார். ஆனால், கோழி பரிதாபமாக உயிரிழந்தது.

இரைப்பையில் கம்மல் குத்தி காயம் ஏற்பட்டதால் கோழி உயிரி ழந்துவிட்டதாக டாக்டர் தெரிவித் தார். இதைக் கேட்ட சிவக்குமார் கதறி அழுதபடி, கோழியை வீட் டுக்கு தூக்கிச் சென்றார். வீட்டில் இருந்த தீபாவும் கோழியை பார்த்து கதறி அழுதுள்ளார். பின்னர், உயிரிழந்த கோழியை அடக்கம் செய்தனர்.

CHENNAI: Power supply will be suspended by Tangedco on Wednesday (August 7) from 9 am to 4 pm in the following areas to carry out maintenance work. According to a statement from Tangedco, power supply will be resumed before 4 pm if the work is completed.

AVADI: C.T.H Road, Gandhi Nagar, Gandhi Nagar West, Kavarapalayam, Dhanalakshmi Nagar, MRF Nagar, Sindhu Nagar.

ADYAR SASTHIRI NAGAR: East Mada st, Anna st, Pillaiyar koil st, 1 st seaward road, South Mada st, Mettu st, West Tank st, North Mada st, Valmiki st, Sannathi st, Chithirai Kulam, Kuppam Beach road, Bharathidhasan 1 st to 6 th streets).
