மனநலமும் டிஜிட்டல் ஊடகமும்

மனிதனுக்கும் ஊடகத்துக்கும் இடையே உள்ள இடைவெளியை டிஜிட்டல் ஊடகத் தொழில்நுட்பங்கள் இல்லாமல் செய்துவிட்டன. வீடுகள், அலுவலகங்கள், பயணம் என எல்லாவற்றிலும் கைவிரல்கள் கெஞ்சும் அளவுக்கு நாம் செல்போன்களையும் ஐபேட்களையும் பயன்படுத்தியபடி இருக்கிறோம். கடந்த பத்தாண்டுகளில் அதிகரித்துவரும் மன நலப் பிரச்சினைகளுக்கு டிஜிட்டல் ஊடகப் பயன்பாடும் காரணமாக இருப்பதாக ஆய்வுகள் தெரிவித்துள்ளன.

அமெரிக்க உளவியல் கழகம் செய்த ஆய்வில், 1995-க்குப் பிறகு பிறந்த இளைஞர்களிடம் எதிர்மறையான உளவியல் அறிகுறிகள் இருப்பதாகத் தெரியவந்துள்ளது. முகநூல் போன்ற சமூக ஊடகங்கள் கடந்த பத்தாண்டுகளில் தாக்கம் பெற்றபிறகு இந்தப் பிரச்சினைகளின் அழுத்தம் கூடியிருப்பதாகவும் அது தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

“தற்கொலை எண்ணங்கள், தீவிர மன அழுத்தம், மனத் தொந்தரவுகள், தற்கொலை முயற்சிகள் 2010-க்குப் பின்னர் அதிகமாகியுள்ளன. இந்த எண்ணிக்கை பதின்பருவத்தினரிடமும் இளைஞர்களிடமும் 2000-ல்

இருந்ததைவிட இன்று அதிகமாகி யுள்ளது” என்கிறார் ஐஜென் புத்தகத்தின் ஆசிரியரும் உளவியல் பேராசிரியருமான ஜீன் ட்வென்ஜ். 30 வயதைத் தாண்டியவர்களிடம் இந்த நிலைமைகள் இல்லையென்றும் அவர்களுக்கு அடுத்த தலைமுறையினர்தான் அதிகம் பாதிக்கப்பட்டிருப்பதாகவும் அவர் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

ட்வென்ஜ்-ம் அவருடைய குழுவினரும் அமெரிக்காவில் 12 முதல் 17 வயதுவரை உள்ள சிறார்களிடமும் இளைஞர்களிடமும் 18 வயதுக்கு மேலுள்ள 4 லட்சம் இளைஞர்களிடமும் ஆய்வு செய்ததில், சமூகரீதியான உறவு பலமாக உள்ள மூத்தவர்களைவிட வளரிளம் பருவத்திலுள்ளவர்களும், இளம்பிராயத்தினரிடமும் தாக்கம் செலுத்தும் டிஜிட்டல் ஊடகங்கள்தாம், மனரீதியான அழுத்தங்களையும் தற்கொலை எண்ணங்களையும் தூண்டுவதற்குக் காரணமாக உள்ளது தெரியவந்துள்ளது.

மரபியல், பொருளாதாரப் பின்னணி ஆகியவைதாம் மன நலப் பிரச்சினைகளைப் புரிந்து கொள்வதற்கான காரணிகளாக இதுவரை இருந்துவந்தன. நேரடியாகச் சமூகத் தொடர்புகள், உறவுகளை வைத்திருப்பவர்களுக்கும் டிஜிட்டல் ஊடகங்கள் வழியாகவே தொடர்புகளைப் பராமரிப்பவர்களுக்கும் இடையே உள்ள வித்தியாசங்களின் அடிப்படையில் மனநலப் பிரச்சினைகளை அணுக வேண்டும் என்ற புரிதலையும் இந்த ஆய்வு ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது. மேலும், சமூகரீதியான பதற்றம், சமூகத் தனிமை, தனிமை உணர்வுகள் டிஜிட்டல் ஊடகங்களைப் பாவிப்பவர்களிடையே அதிகம் உள்ளதாக இந்த ஆய்வுகள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன.

உறக்கம் குறைகிறது

முந்தைய தலைமுறையினர் உறங்குவதற்குப் போதுமான நேரமிருந்ததாகவும் தற்போதைய தலைமுறையினர் சரியான அளவில் உறங்குவதில்லை என்பதும் இந்த ஆய்வுகள் வழியாகத் தெரியவந்துள்ளது. தூக்கக் குறைபாடும் படபடப்பு, மன அழுத்தம் போன்ற பிரச்சினைகளுக்குக் காரணமாக இருப்பதையே அவை காட்டுகின்றன.

“வளரிளம் பருவத்தினர் படுக்கையிலேயே செல்போனிலிருந்து வரும் ஒளிக்கு மிக அருகில் நிறைய நேரத்தைச் செலவழிக்கின்றனர். அந்த ஒளியே 30 நிமிடங்களுக்குத் தூக்கத்தைத் தள்ளிப்போடும் ஆற்றல் மிக்கது” என்கிறார் உளவியல் மருத்துவர் ஆரோன் ஃபோபியன்.

டிஜிட்டல் ஊடகங்களைத் தவிர்த்து நம் ஓய்வு நேரத்தைக் கழிப்பதற்கு ஆக்கப்பூர்வமான வழிகளைச் சிந்திக்க வேண்டிய தருணம் இது. வளரிளம் பருவத்துக் குழந்தைகளின் பெற்றோர்கள் தங்கள் குழந்தைகளின் சமூக ஊடகப் பயன்பாட்டைக் குறைப்பதற்கு ஆலோசனை கூற வேண்டும். நேரடியான சமூகத் தொடர்புகளில் ஈடுபட அவர்களை ஊக்குவிக்க வேண்டும்.

வீட்டில் சேர்ந்திருக்கும் நேரங்களில் பெரியவர்களும் போன் பயன்பாட்டைத் தவிர்ப்பதிலிருந்து இதைத் தொடங்கலாம். செல்போன்கள், ஐபேட்களிலிருந்து குழந்தைகளை விடுவிக்க பெற்றோர்களே முன்னுதாரணமாகத் திகழ வேண்டும். மாற்றத்தை நம்மிலிருந்து தொடங்குவோம்.

காவலர் எபேன், சுத்தம் செய்யும் இளைஞர்கள்

சென்னை பெசன்ட் நகர் கடற்கரையில் பிறந்த நாள் கொண்டாடிவிட்டு குப்பைக்கூளமாக்கி, அசுத்தம் செய்த அலட்சிய இளைஞர்களை போன் செய்து வரவழைத்த காவலர் அவர்களை திருத்த கொடுத்த நூதன தண்டனையால் பாராட்டு குவிகிறது.

பொதுவாக பொதுஇடத்தை சுத்தமாக பராமரிக்கவேண்டும் என்கிற எண்ணம் நம்மில் பலருக்கு இல்லை என்ற கருத்தை யாரும் மறுக்க மாட்டார்கள். அது குழந்தை வளர்ப்பிலிருந்து கொண்டு வரப்படவேண்டிய ஒன்று. சமூகத்தின்மீதான அக்கறைதான் பொது அக்கறையாக மாறும்.

மத்திய அரசு சுத்தத்தின் அவசியத்தை வலியுறுத்தி கொண்டுவந்த ஸ்வச் பாரத் திட்டமே புகைப்படத்துக்கு போஸ் கொடுக்கும் திட்டமாக மாறி அதை அமல்படுத்தும் நிலையில் உள்ளவர்களே கடைபிடிக்காத நிலையில் உள்ளது யதார்த்தம்.

சமீபத்தில் சென்னை மெரினா கடற்கரையில் ஆக்கிரமிப்பு மற்றும் அசுத்தம் பராமரிப்பின்மையால் சுற்றுசூழல் பாதிப்பு கண்டு கோபமடைந்த உயர் நீதிமன்றம் கடுமையான உத்தரவை பிறப்பித்து மாநகராட்சி மற்றும் காவல் ஆணையர்கள் ஒரு மாதம் வாக்கிங் போய் கண்காணியுங்கள் என அறிவுறுத்தியது.

சமீப காலமாக பிறந்தநாள் கொண்டாட்டங்களில் கேக் வாங்கி அதை சாப்பிடாமல் முகத்தில் பூசி வீணடிக்கும் நடைமுறையும் இளம் தலைமுறையினரிடையே பிரபலமாகி வருகிறது. இதேபோன்றதொரு சம்பவம் சில நாட்களுக்குமுன் பெசன்ட் நகர் கடற்கரையில் நடந்தது.

தனது நண்பர் பிறந்தநாளை கொண்டாட முடிவெடுத்த சில இளைஞர்கள், கடந்த சில தினங்களுக்கு முன்பு பெசன்ட் நகர் எலியட்ஸ் கடற்கரை பகுதியில் அதை கொண்டாடினர். வழக்கம்போல் கேக் ஆர்டர் செய்தனர். பெட்டி பெட்டியாக வந்த கேக்கை எலிய்ட்ஸ் கடற்கரையின் நடைபாதையில் வைத்து கொண்டாடினர்.

ஆட்டம்பாட்டம் முகத்தில் பூசிக்கொள்வது என கொண்டாட்டம் களைக்கட்டியது. பின்னர் அனைவரும் சந்தோஷத்துடன் கலைந்தனர். ஆனால் அவர்கள் விட்டுச்சென்ற குப்பைகள், கேக் வைக்கும் அட்டைபெட்டிகள் ,கலர் பேப்பர்கள் நடைபாதை எங்கும் சிதறி கிடந்தன. அதை ஓரமாக குப்பைத்தொட்டியில் போடுவது எங்கள் வேலையல்ல என்ற நினைப்பில் இளைஞர்கள் சென்றுவிட்டனர்.

அந்த இடத்துக்கு அருகே சாஸ்த்ரி நகர் போலீஸ் பூத் உள்ளது. சாஸ்திரி நகர் காவல் நிலையத்தில் காவலராக பணியாற்றி வருபவர் எபென் கிறிஸ்டோபர், அவருக்கு அன்று டூட்டி. அங்கு வந்தவர் பூத் அருகே நடைபாதையில் சிதறிக்கிடந்த குப்பைக் குவியலைப்பார்த்துள்ளார்.

உடனடியாக காவலர் எபென், கேக் விற்பனை செய்த சம்பத்தப்பட்ட பேக்கரிக்கு தொடர்பு கொண்டு யார் கேக் ஆர்டர் செய்தது, அவர்களின் தொடர்பு எண் உள்ளிட விவரங்களை பெற்றுள்ளார். அந்த நபருக்கு போன் செய்து பெசன்ட் நகர் எலியட்ஸ் பீச்சுக்கு வரவைத்துள்ளார்.

பின்னர் அங்கு வந்த இளைஞரிடம் பிறந்த நாள் கொண்டாட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டீர்களா? என விசாரித்தபோது அவர் மறுத்துள்ளார். போலீஸ் வழக்கு பதிவு செய்து விடுவார்கள் என பயந்து அவர் மறுத்துள்ளார்.

அங்குள்ள சிசிடிவி கேமராக்களில் பதிவான காட்சிகளை அந்த இளைஞருக்கு போட்டு காண்பித்த எபென் இப்போது என்ன சொல்கிறீர்கள் என்று கேட்டபோது இளைஞர் ஒப்புகொண்டு, தனது நண்பரின் பிறந்த நாளுக்காக கேக்குகள் வாங்கி கொண்டாட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டோம் என கூறியுள்ளார்.

சரி யார் யாரெல்லாம் கொண்டாட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டார்களோ அவர்களை இங்கு அழையுங்கள் என கூறியுள்ளார். அந்த இளைஞரும் அழைக்க அனைவரும் வந்துள்ளனர். போலீஸ் வழக்குப்பதிவு செய்யுமோ என பயந்த அவர்களிடம் காவலர் எபென் கனிவுடன் அவர்கள் செய்த தவறை விளக்கியுள்ளார்.

அனைத்து இளைஞர்களிடமும் துடப்பத்தை கொடுத்து சுத்தம் செய்ய சொல்லி அறிவுறுத்தியுள்ளார். அதை ஏற்றுக்கொண்ட இளைஞர்கள் சுத்தம் செய்தனர்.

சுத்தம் செய்தப்பின்னர் நாம் பயன்படுத்தும் அனைத்து பொது இடங்களையும் நமது சொந்த வீடாக கருதி சுத்தமாக வைத்திருக்க வேண்டும் என அறிவுரை கூறி அனுப்பி வைத்துள்ளார். இளைஞர்களும் அதை ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு வருத்தம் தெரிவித்து சென்றுள்ளனர்.

பாதுகாப்பு பணிதானே தமக்கு என சென்றுவிடாமல், அதையும் தாண்டி சமூக பொறுப்புடன் செயல்பட்ட அந்த காவலரின் செயலை உயரதிகாரிகள் பாராட்டி வருகின்றனர். ஸ்வச் பாரத் விருதுக்கு தகுதியான காவலர் இவர் என போலீஸார் பாராட்டி வருகின்றனர்.

மகேந்திரன் எனும் மகத்தான படைப்பாளியும் ரஜினியிஸமும்

சினிமாவின் மீது தீராக் காதல் கொண்ட அத்தனை பேருக்கும் ஆதர்சமாக இருப்பவர் மகேந்திரன். சினிமாவில் ஒரு வெற்றிப் படம் கொடுத்த இயக்குநர் கூட அந்த இடத்துக்கு வந்த கதையை மாய்ந்து மாய்ந்து சொல்வது வழக்கம். வறுமையின் பின்னணி, பசியின் கொடுமை அல்லது வசதியான வாழ்க்கை, வேலையை விட்டு சினிமாவைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தற்கான காரணம் என தான் கடந்து வந்த பாதை குறித்து சிலாகித்துச் சொல்வார்கள். என்னுடைய இந்தப் படம் தமிழ் சினிமாவில் பத்து வருடங்களுக்குப் பேசும் படமாக இருக்கும் என்று சத்தியம் செய்யாத குறையாக அடித்துச் சொல்பவர்களும் அநேகம். ஒரு படத்துக்கே ஓவர் பில்டப் தருகிற வியாபார உலகம் சினிமா. அங்கே தன்னை விற்கத் தெரிந்தவர்களே ஜாம்பவன்கள் என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறார்கள்.

ஆனால், இயக்குநர் மகேந்திரன் இந்த சினிமாத்தனமான நபர்களுக்கு மத்தியில் ஒரு குறிஞ்சி மலர் என்று சொல்லலாம். ஒரு முறையல்ல... இரு முறை அவரை நேர்காணல் செய்யும் வாய்ப்பும் பேரனுபவமும் எளியவன் எனக்குக் கிட்டியது. அந்த அனுபவத்திலும் அவர் அணுகிய விதத்திலும் சொல்ல வேண்டுமென்றால் மகேந்திரன் சார் மென் மனசுக்குச் சொந்தக்காரர். துளியும் மிகைத்தன்மை இல்லாமல் பேசக்கூடிய யதார்த்தத்தின் வார்ப்பு அவர்.

கடந்த 5 வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு, 'முள்ளும் மலரும்' திரைப்படம் வெளியாகி 35 ஆண்டுகள் கடந்த நிலையில் அந்தப் படத்தை தமிழ் சினிமா உலகம் சமூக வலைதளங்கள் உள்ளிட்ட ஊடகங்களில் கொண்டாடிக் கொண்டிருந்த நிலையில் இயக்குநர் மகேந்திரனை சந்தித்துப் பேசினேன். தமிழ் சினிமாவின் சத்யஜித்ரே மகேந்திரன் என்று சினிமா ஆர்வலர்கள் போற்றுவதை அவரிடத்தில் பெருமையுடன் பகிர்ந்த போது, ''நல்ல சினிமா எடுக்காத குற்ற உணர்வில் இருக்கிறேன். இது தன்னடக்கம் அல்ல. என் நிஜமான வாக்குமூலம்'' என்று சொன்னவர் மகேந்திரன். ஆனால், அவர் தான் தமிழ் சினிமாவில் அழியாத, சாகாவரம் பெற்ற படங்களைக் கொடுத்தார்.

ரஜினிக்குள் இருக்கும் மகா நடிகனைக் கண்டுகொண்டவர் நீங்கள். 'முள்ளும் மலரும்', 'ஜானி' படங்களின் மூலம் அவருக்கான ராஜபாட்டையை வகுத்துக் கொடுத்தவர். 36 படங்களுக்கு கதை, வசனம் எழுதி 12 படங்கள் இயக்கி தமிழ் சினிமாவை உற்று கவனிக்க வைத்த ஆளுமையான நீங்களே இப்படிச் சொல்லலாமா? நீங்கள் இயக்கிய படங்களில் உங்களுக்குத் திருப்தியில்லையா என்று கேட்டால், கண்களைச் சுருக்கிச் சிரித்தார். அந்த மகேந்திரனை நீங்கள் அருகிருந்து பார்த்திருந்தால் ரஜினியின் மேனரிஸம் எங்கிருந்து எப்படி வந்திருக்கும் என்று உங்களால் உறுதி செய்திருக்க முடியும்.


மகேந்திரன் சினிமாவுக்கு விரும்பி வந்தவர் அல்ல. அது ஒரு விபத்து என்று அவரே சொல்லியிருக்கிறார். அவருக்கு நடந்தது கட்டாயக் கல்யாணம்தான் என்றாலும் அவர் பிடிக்காத, கொடுமைக்கார கணவனாக நடந்துகொள்ளவில்லை. சினிமா என்ற காதலிக்கு அவர் பேரன்பையும், கருணையும், நேசத்தையும் அள்ளிக் கொடுத்தார். அவருக்கும் சினிமாவுக்குமான உறவு எல்லையற்ற மகோன்னத உணர்வுடனே கடைசி வரை இருந்தது. அதனால்தான் 'மோகமுள்' மீண்டும் மலரும் என்று தனக்கே உரிய பாணியில் திரைக்கதையை உருவாக்கினார். சத்யராஜ் நடிப்பில் ஜி.வி.பிரகாஷ் இசையில் ஒரு படம் இயக்குவதற்கும் பேச்சுவார்த்தை நடந்து அது கைகூடாமலே போனது காலத்தின் இழப்புதான்.

ரஜினியிஸம்




சிவாஜி ராவ் ஆக இருந்தவரை ரஜினியாக மாற்றியவர் பாலசந்தர்தான். அதில் மாற்றுக் கருத்தில்லை. ஆனால், அந்த ரஜினிக்கு நடை, உடை, பாவனை உள்ளிட்ட உடல்மொழியில், உச்சரிப்பில் தனித்துவம் ஏற்படுத்தி, ரஜினிக்குள் இருக்கும் மகா நடிகனை அடையாளப்படுத்தியதில் இயக்குநர் மகேந்திரனுக்குப் பெரும் பங்கு உண்டு. ரஜினியின் அந்த அடையாளம் இன்று ரஜினியிஸமாக, சூப்பர் ஸ்டார் பிம்பமாக வளர்ந்துள்ளது.

இதன் பின்னணி என்ன?

ரஜினி நடித்த 'ஆடுபுலி ஆட்டம்' திரைப்படத்துக்கு வசனம் மகேந்திரன். பெங்களூரில் படப்பிடிப்பு நடைபெற்ற போது ரஜினிக்குள் இருக்கும் சினிமாவின் மீதான கனலை அப்படியே மகேந்திரனிடம் இறக்கினார். அதனால் ஆச்சர்யப்பட்டும் அகமகிழ்ந்தும்போன மகேந்திரன் பின்னாளில் இயக்குநராக அறிமுகமாகும்போது 'முள்ளும் மலரும்' படத்தில் ரஜினிதான் நாயகனாக நடிக்க வேண்டும் என்று அடம்பிடித்தார். வில்லன் முத்திரை இருக்கும் ரஜினியை ஹீரோவாக நடிக்க வைப்பதற்கு தயாரிப்பாளர் தயங்கிய போது ரஜினி நாயகன் என்பதற்குச் சம்மதம் என்றால்தான் படத்தை இயக்குவேன் என்று உறுதி காட்டினார்.

இதுகுறித்து மகேந்திரனிடம் கேட்ட போது, ''ரஜினி எப்போதுமே என் நண்பர். அவர் சினிமா மீதான அவரின் கனவு பரந்து விரிந்தது. சாண்டில்யனின் ஜலதீபம் சரித்திர நாவலில் வரும் கடல் தளபதி கன்னோஜியைப் பற்றி வாசிக்கும் போது ரஜினி அந்தக் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் நடித்தால் எப்படி இருக்கும் என யோசிக்கிறேன். அதுபோன்ற படங்களில் ரஜினி நடிக்கும்போது அமிதாப் பச்சனை எளிதில் கிராஸ் செய்வார்'' என்று தன் ஆவலையும், ரஜினி செல்ல வேண்டிய பாதையையும் அழகாக விவரித்தார். இப்போது கூட ரஜினி இதை பரிசோதனையாக முயற்சித்துப் பார்ப்பதில் தவறில்லைதான்.

உறுதுணைக் கதாபாத்திரங்களுக்கு உயிர் கொடுத்தவர்

சினிமா யதார்த்தத்தின் பதிவாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று விரும்பியவர் மகேந்திரன். அதனால் தான் நாயகன், நாயகி என்று இருவரைச் சுற்றி மட்டும் எந்தக் கதையையும் அவர் உருவாக்கவில்லை. 'முள்ளும் மலரும்' படத்தில் சரத்பாபு, ஷோபா, படாபட் ஜெயலட்சுமி, வெண்ணிற ஆடை மூர்த்தி, சாமிக்கண்ணு உள்ளிட்ட எல்லோருமே ஜொலித்தார்கள். 'உதிரிப்பூக்கள்' சாருஹாசன் அதில் ஒற்றைப் பருக்கை. ''இந்த ஊரை விட்டு ஏன்பா போறீங்க'' என்று அஸ்வினி கேட்கும்போது, ''என்னை யாரும் இங்க இருக்கச் சொல்லலையேம்மா'' என்று வருத்த வார்த்தைகளில் கலங்க வைப்பார். உறுதுணைக் கதாபாத்திரங்களுக்கு உயிர் கொடுக்கும் படைப்புகளில் மகேந்திரன் தன்னிகரற்று விளங்கினார்.

டூயட்களை வெறுத்தவர்

ஐ லவ் யூ சொல்வதுதான் தமிழ் சினிமாவின் ஆகப் பெரிய பிரச்சினையாக இருக்கிறது. டூயட் பாடல்கள் இல்லாமல் காதலைச் சொல்ல முடியாதா என்று ஒரு மூத்த படைப்பாளியாக விமர்சனம் செய்தவர் இயக்குநர் மகேந்திரன். அதே சமயத்தில் 'கை கொடுக்கும் கை' படத்தில் தாழம்பூவே டூயட் பாடலை வைத்ததற்காக வருத்தம் தெரிவித்தார். ஆனால், இசையை மையப்படுத்திய 'ஜானி' படத்தின் மூலம் மறக்க முடியாத மனதை வருடும் பாடல்களைக் கொடுத்தார். ராஜாவும் இசையில் தனி ராஜாங்கம் நடத்தி இருந்தார். 'உதிரிப்பூக்கள்' படத்தின் அழகிய கண்ணே பாடல் இப்போதுவரை மென்சோகத்தின் உச்சமாக உள்ளது.

பாலு மகேந்திரா- மகேந்திரனின் ஒத்த அலைவரிசை

'முள்ளும் மலரும்' படத்தின் ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் பாலு மகேந்திரா. கன்னடத்தில் 'கோகிலா' படத்தை இயக்கிய பாலு 'முள்ளும் மலரும்' படத்துக்குப் பிறகுதான் தமிழ்ப் படங்களை இயக்கினார். பாலுவுக்கும் டூயட் பாடல்கள் பிடிக்காது. பொது இடத்தில் காதலிப்பது போன்ற காட்சிகளை வைக்கமாட்டார். 'அழியாத கோலங்கள்' படத்தில் ஷோபாவின் கதாபாத்திரம் தனித்துவமானது. வகுப்பறைக்குள் புதிதாக வந்த ஷோபா, ''என் பேரு இந்து. உங்க பேரைச் சொல்லுங்கம்மா'' என்று வெட்கமும், தயக்கமும், படபடப்புமாகக் கேட்பார். அந்த சாயலை நீங்கள் 'முள்ளும் மலரும்' வள்ளியிடம் பார்க்கலாம். 'உதிரிப்பூக்கள்' படத்தில் மிகையில்லாத, அசலான குழந்தைத்தன்மையோடு இருக்கும் குழந்தைகளைப் பார்க்க முடியும். அதன் நீட்சியாக 'நீங்கள் கேட்டவை' படத்தில் பூர்ணிமாவின் குழந்தைகளைப் பார்க்கலாம். மகேந்திரனின் திரை மொழியும், பாத்திரப் படைப்பும் பாலு மகேந்திராவையும் ஈர்த்திருக்கிறது அதனால் தான் இருவரும் ஒத்த அலைவரிசையில் இயங்கினர் என்பதை மறுக்க முடியாது.

நடிப்பின் மூலம் மறுவருகை

12 படங்களில் தன் தடத்தைப் பதித்த மகேந்திரன் 'காமராஜ்' படத்தில் அவரது தொண்டராக சிறிய கதாபாத்திரத்தில் நடித்தார். அதற்குப் பிறகு அட்லீ இயக்கத்தில் விஜய் நடித்த 'தெறி' படத்தில் எதிர்மறைக் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் நடித்தார். தொடர்ந்து 'நிமிர்', 'மிஸ்டர் சந்திரமௌலி', 'பேட்ட' ஆகிய படங்களில் நடித்தார். கரு.பழனியப்பன் இயக்கத்தில் அருள்நிதி நடிப்பில் உருவாகி வரும் 'புகழேந்தி எனும் நான்' படத்திலும் முக்கியக் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் மகேந்திரன் நடித்துள்ளார். இப்படம் மட்டும் இன்னும் வெளியாகவில்லை.


திடீரென்று ஏன் மகேந்திரன் சார் நடிகர் ஆனார் என்ற கேள்வி 'தெறி' படம் ரிலீஸான போது எழுந்தது. அப்போது இயக்குநரும் நடிகருமான என் நண்பர் ஓர் அழகான பதிலைச் சொன்னார். ''சினிமா என்பது எல்லா கலைகளையும், கலைஞர்களையும், படைப்பாளிகளையும் விழுங்கக்கூடிய ஆக்டோபஸ். மகத்தான ஆளுமைகளை, மூத்த படைப்பாளிகளை இன்றைய தலைமுறை அறிந்துகொள்வதில் ஆர்வம் காட்டுவதில்லை. அந்த வகையில் மகேந்திரன் சாரின் மறுவருகை நடிப்பால் நிகழ்ந்தது இளம் தலைமுறைக்கான தெரிவிப்புப் படலமாக இருக்கட்டும்'' என்றார். அது 100% ஏற்புடையது.

ஆவணப்படமும் ஆவணக் காப்பகமும்

சினிமாவுக்கென்று ஆவணக் காப்பகம் ஒன்றை உருவாக்க வேண்டும் என்று பாலு மகேந்திரா கடைசி வரை வலியுறுத்திக் கொண்டே இருந்தார். . ஆனால், இன்னும் அந்தக் கோரிக்கை நிறைவேறவில்லை. தமிழ் சினிமா உள்ளவரை மகேந்திரன் சார் நினைவுகூரப்படுவார், அவரது படங்களின் மூலம் மகேந்திரன் சார் வாழ்ந்து கொண்டிருப்பார் என்று சொல்லிவிடலாம்தான். ஆனால், அது மட்டுமே அவருக்கான இறுதி மரியாதையாக இருக்காது. இயக்குநர் மகேந்திரன் குறித்து ஒரு ஆவணப் படத்தை தமிழ் சினிமா முன்னெடுப்பதும், ஆவணக் காப்பகத்தை நிறுவுவதுமே அவர் நமக்கு விட்டு வைத்திருக்கும் கடமைகள். படைப்பாளியை இழந்த நாம் படைப்புகளை இழக்காமல் இருக்க அதற்கான முயற்சிகளை எடுப்பது அவசர அவசியம்.

இந்தியன் ஓவர்சீஸ் வங்கியில் போலி சான்றிதழ் சமர்ப்பித்து பணியில் சேர்ந்தவர்களுக்கு எதிராக தொடரப்பட்ட வழக்கின் விசாரணைக்காக, சென்னை மாவட்ட ஆட்சியர் அலுவலகத்தில் உள்ள சிபிஐ நீதிமன்றத்தில் 424 பேர் புதன்கிழமை ஆஜராகினர்.

துப்புரவு பணியாளர் மற்றும் தபால் பிரிவு பணியாளர் பணிகளில் கடந்த 2013-ஆம் ஆண்டு முதல் கடந்த 2015-ஆம் ஆண்டு வரையிலான காலக்கட்டத்தில், தமிழகம் முழுவதும் 900 பேரை இந்தியன் ஓவர்சீஸ் வங்கி நியமனம் செய்தது. இந்த பணிக்கு 8-ஆம் வகுப்பில் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றவர்களும் 10-ஆம் வகுப்பில் தோல்வி அடைந்தவர்கள் மட்டுமே விண்ணப்பிக்க முடியும் என நிபந்தனை விதிக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது. 

ஆனால், இந்தப் பணிகளில் அதிக கல்வித்தகுதி கொண்ட பலர் போலியான கல்விச் சான்றிதழ்களை சமர்ப்பித்து பணியில் சேர்ந்துள்ளனர். இந்த முறைகேட்டுக்கு, வங்கி அதிகாரிகள், தொழிற்சங்க நிர்வாகிகள் உடந்தையாக இருந்ததாக குற்றம் சாட்டப்பட்டது. இந்த முறைகேடு தொடர்பாக சிபிஐ விசாரணை நடத்தியது. இந்த விசாரணையில், போலியான கல்விச் சான்றிதழை சமர்ப்பித்து பட்டதாரிகள், முதுநிலை பட்டதாரிகள் என சுமார் 400 பேர் பணியில் சேர்ந்ததும், பணி நியமனத்துக்காக அவர்களிடம் ரூ.3 லட்சம் முதல் ரூ.5 லட்சம் வரை அதிகாரிகள் மற்றும் தொழிற்சங்க நிர்வாகிகள் லஞ்சம் வாங்கியதும் தெரியவந்தது. மேலும், பணியில் சேர்ந்த பலரும் உயர்கல்வி முடித்திருப்பது தெரிந்திருந்தும், அவர்கள் 8-ஆம் வகுப்பு வரை மட்டுமே தேர்ச்சிப் பெற்றுள்ளதாக பல்வேறு பள்ளிகளைச் சேர்ந்த தலைமை ஆசிரியர்கள், ஆசிரியர்கள் போலி சான்றிதழ்களை வழங்கியிருப்பதும் தெரியவந்தது.
இது தொடர்பாக, வங்கியின் அப்போதைய தலைவர் மற்றும் நிர்வாக இயக்குநர் நரேந்திரா, தொழிற்சங்கத் தலைவர் பாலசுப்பிரமணியன், போலி கல்விச் சான்றிதழ் வழங்கிய ஆசிரியர்கள், அந்த சான்றிதழை சமர்ப்பித்து பணியில் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் என மொத்தம் 446 பேர் மீது சிபிஐ வழக்குப்பதிவு செய்தது. இதையடுத்து, போலி கல்விச் சான்றிதழ் கொடுத்து பணியில் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் பணி நீக்கம் செய்யப்பட்டனர். விசாரணையின் போது இந்த வழக்கில் குற்றம்சாட்டப்பட்டவர்களில் 4 பேர் இறந்து விட்டனர். இந்த வழக்கு, சென்னை மாவட்ட ஆட்சியர் அலுவலக வளாகத்தில் உள்ள சிபிஐ நீதிமன்றத்தில் நீதிபதி ஜவாஹர் முன்னிலையில் புதன்கிழமை விசாரணைக்கு வந்தது. அப்போது ஆஜரான அரசு சிறப்பு வழக்குரைஞர் எம்.வி.தினகர், 442 பேர் மீது குற்றப்பத்திரிகை தாக்கல் செய்தார்.
இதைத் தொடர்ந்து, குற்றப்பத்திரிகை நகலை பெற்றுக் கொள்வதற்காக வங்கியின் முன்னாள் தலைவர் நரேந்திரா உள்ளிட்ட 424 பேர் நீதிமன்றத்தில் ஆஜராகினர், 18 பேர் ஆஜராகவில்லை. நீதிமன்றத்தில் ஆஜரானவர்களுக்கு குற்றப்பத்திரிகை நகல் வழங்கப்பட்டது. இதையடுத்து, வழக்கு விசாரணையை, வரும் ஜூன் 12-ஆம் தேதிக்கு நீதிபதி ஒத்திவைத்தார். ஒரே நேரத்தில் 400-க்கும் மேற்பட்டவர்கள் நீதிமன்றத்துக்கு வந்திருந்ததால், நீதிமன்ற வளாகம் பரபரப்பாக காணப்பட்டது.

மருத்துவ மேற்படிப்பு கலந்தாய்வு இன்று நிறைவு

முதுநிலை மருத்துவப் படிப்புகளுக்கான கலந்தாய்வு வியாழக்கிழமையுடன் (ஏப்.4) நிறைவடைகிறது. கடந்த மூன்று நாள்களில் 877 மாணவர்களுக்கு மருத்துவ மேற்படிப்புக்கான இடங்கள் ஒதுக்கீடு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளன.
தமிழகத்தில் அரசு மற்றும் தனியார் மருத்துவக் கல்லூரிகளில் எம்டி, எம்எஸ் படிப்புகளில் அரசு ஒதுக்கீட்டு இடங்களுக்கான கலந்தாய்வு ஓமந்தூரார்அரசு பல்நோக்கு உயர் சிறப்பு மருத்துவமனையில் கடந்த திங்கள்கிழமை தொடங்கியது. 

முதல்நாள் கலந்தாய்வில் அரசுக் கல்லூரிகளில் 283 பேர், தனியார் கல்லூரிகளில் 7 பேர் என மொத்தம் 290 பேர் மருத்துவப் படிப்புக்கான இடங்களைத் தேர்வு செய்தனர். இரண்டாம் நாள் கலந்தாய்வில் மொத்தம் 422 பேர் கல்லூரிகளில் சேர்வதற்கான அனுமதி கடிதம் பெற்றனர்.
மூன்றாம் நாளான புதன்கிழமை 165 இடங்கள் நிரம்பியதாக மருத்துவக் கல்வி இயக்குநரகம் தெரிவித்துள்ளது. 

மருத்துவ மேற்படிப்புக்கான கலந்தாய்வைத் தொடர்ந்து அரசு மற்றும் தனியார் பல் மருத்துவக் கல்லூரிகளின் அரசு ஒதுக்கீட்டுக்கான எம்டிஎஸ் இடங்கள் மற்றும் தனியார் மருத்துவம் மற்றும் பல் மருத்துவக் கல்லூரிகளின் நிர்வாக ஒதுக்கீட்டுக்கான எம்டி, எம்எஸ், எம்டிஎஸ் இடங்களுக்கு கலந்தாய்வு நடத்த மருத்துவக் கல்வி இயக்குநரகம் திட்டமிட்டுள்ளது.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to form a panel of retired senior government officers from where officials can be appointed as enquiry officers for conducting departmental inquiries, a senior board official said on Monday.

The panel will be valid for a period of three years and the number of disciplinary cases assigned to an inquiry officer will be restricted to eight cases in a year with not more than 4 cases at a time, the official said.

“CBSE proposes to prepare a panel of retired officers of the central government, state government and PSUs who retired from the post of Additional Secretary, Joint Secretary, Director and Deputy Secretary or equivalent rank, to be appointed as inquiry officer for the purpose of conducting departmental inquiries in CBSE,” a senior board official said.

The board is seeking applications from the retired officers who are willing to serve and pay honorarium as per prescribed rates.

“A review of every empanelled inquiry officer will be done after receipt of two inquiry reports, where adherence to the time lines and the procedure and quality of work will be assessed by the office.

“Subsequent allocation of work may be done only after such evaluation. The services of the Inquiry Officers whose performance is not up to the mark will be terminated with the approval of the appointing authority,” the official added.

Less than six months after University of Mumbai (MU) introduced a provision for students to write their names on the answer sheets, it rolled back the feature. The newly-printed answer sheets have been printed as per the old format, in which students can mention only their seat numbers.

“The idea behind allowing students to write their names on the answer sheets was to trace them easily in case a student makes a mistake while writing his/her seat number. However, we returned to the old format — seat numbers only — after several officials panned the decision letting students write their names on the answer sheets,” said an official from the examination department.

He added new answer sheets were printed as per the old format and were issued for examinations that started from March 25.

For years, students were prohibited from revealing their identity (mentioning their names or the institute) on their answer sheets during MU exams. This was done to curb malpractices during the assessment of answer sheets.

In 2017, the varsity introduced on-screen marking (OSM) system of assessment for which booklets were scanned and assessed using a software. But owing to errors made by students in writing their seat numbers and software glitch, many answer booklets went missing.

In October 2018, the MU printed answer booklets with an additional slot for students to mention their names and then covered it with a removable sticker. Students and colleges alleged this violated secrecy norms during the assessment.

“Mentioning the name of student wouldn’t breach any norms because all personal information is masked. On OSM, a teacher can’t see the first page of the answer sheet that has personal information. So there is no chance of wrongdoing,” said a varsity official.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Tuesday issued a notification saying that the information circulated on Whatsapp about the re-conduct of Class 12 physics and economics examinations is fake or not correct.

The CBSE said it has come to the board’s notice that fake information about the re-conduct of examinations of these two subjects is being circulated on Whatsapp.

“It is come to the notice of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) that a fake information regarding the re-conduct of examination of subject Physics and Economics of Class XII is being circulated on whatsapp. The date of this information is 28.03.2019 which has been signed by Sh. K K Choudhury, former Controller of Examinations. This is brought to the notice of Stakeholders that the news of re-conduct of Physics and Economics of Class XII is fake. All Stakeholders and public is requested not to give any heed to the rumors like the above said one and cooperate with the CBSE in the smooth and fair conduct of examinations.”

The CBSE had conducted Class 12 physics examination on March 5 and economics examination on March 27.

Earlier in February too, the board had issued instructions to students and their parents urging them to be careful against any kind fake information spread on social media. The board had warned unscrupulous elements against spreading rumors by hosting fake videos/messages on YouTube, Face Book, twitter and other Social Media platforms. The board had said that it will take strict action as per provisions of law against such people. The board had also urged the public to cooperate with the board for the smooth conduct of the exams.

‘HE BELIEVED IN ADDRESSING PEOPLE WITH RESPECT’

My relationship with director Mahendran was more like a father and son. Whenever I would feel depressed, I would go to his house. He would talk about life, give me advice and that would keep me going for at least a year. Whenever I watched any of his movies on television, be it Johnny or Uthiri Pookkal, I would call him and say that I was watching the film. He would then share interesting vignettes about the film. Though we had a close relationship, he would always address me as Mr Vijay. He believed in addressing people with respect. When I told him that I was working with a Hollywood director (Chuck Russell) in Junglee, he said that there’s many more to come. He was the only person whom I invited for my wedding. During the shooting of Saasanam in Karaikudi, I told him that it was my 12th wedding anniversary and asked him to bless me. He spoke about the relationship between husband and wife and after a few minutes, vanished from the set. Gauthami, who was on the set, asked if I had said something to him. After a while he came back with a peacock and said, ‘May your life be as colourful as this peacock’. I asked him to let it fly and he did that happily. He believed in enjoying every small thing in life.

‘MAHENDRAN UNCLE USED TO PLAY CRICKET WITH US’

Mahendran uncle and I were neighbours in RA Puram. In fact, Mahendran uncle's son John is a really close friend of ours. More like family, I would say. Appa and he used to visit each other’s houses. So, I have always addressed him as ‘uncle’ and not ‘sir’. He’s known Premgi and I ever since we were kids. We used to play cricket outside our place with friends. If he spotted us, he would come play a game of cricket with us. It was the time when Chennai 600028had released. He had seen both Chennai 600028 and Saroja. He said that he was proud of me and happy that I was doing different kind of films. He even said my films don’t need heroes and that I work well with the younger lot. The kind of filmmaking he engaged in is a lesson for directors of today and tomorrow. We still give references of Mullum Malarum and Uthiri Pookkal to bring out the best emotions from an actor. Mahendran uncle explored acting at a later stage. It was so nice of Atlee to bring him back on screen as an actor.

When I met him 2014 with regards to BOFTA Film Institute, he actually told me that he was planning to start a film school. So, I told him that he should come on board our institution. He was one of the founding members and HoD of Direction. He was so committed to his work that he would be present even when we were interviewing students. I met him recently, just when he had taken ill, and even at the time, he spoke about setting up a studio where students could do photoshoots. He was dedicated to teaching youngsters that craft and used to give feedback on their stories.

I first knew Mahendran sir as a technician, when I worked as an assistant cinematographer in his films. And then, I debuted as an actress with his Nenjathai Killathe. I’ve done three films with him. Just a week ago, I was telling my friends how certain moments define somebody's future. For me, it was when I shooting for the film in Cubbon Park. I was rehearsing my lines for a romantic scene, when the assistant director told me that I had to say it a little differently, in a feminine tone. I was all of 18 and didn’t understand the nuances of all this and was trying to get what he was saying. That’s when Mahendran, from a distance, said, ‘Mr Pragathish, leave her. She knows what she is doing. It’s perfect for me, and it’s perfect for the character. Don’t confuse her.’ I got my green signal for my career right there. Just yesterday, in our 80s group, we were talking about the difference between him and other directors. He let me be; I didn’t have to pretend to be another person while working with him. Unlike Bharathirajaa and Ilaiyaraaja, who travelled the world with their films, he was very happy in his space. His dream was to meet Satyajit Ray. His art and films were his world. He never talked about his work. He would never say, ‘I’m making this film…’. It was always about other people’s films. He changed the trend and made realistic cinemas in the 80s. He was a pathbreaker, but a quiet one. He didn’t arrive with a bang; he was always there. With an actor like Rajini, he made a realistic film like Mullum Malarum. He got together so many unfamiliar actors to create a classic like Uthiri Pookkal. I’m indebted to him, more as a daughter than an actress. No-pay leave offer to Jet pilots, 15 planes grounded

Jet Airways has grounded 15 more aircraft and is now flying only around 13-14 planes. The airline told the DGCA —which is monitoring the situation daily — on Tuesday afternoon that it is flying 28 planes. Then, late on Tuesday, it told BSE about grounding of 15 more planes. The situation is worsening for the crisis-ridden airline due to delay in infusion of emergency funds.

Jet, which once had 124 planes, is now operating a highly truncated schedule and has told its Boeing 737 pilots that they may take “long break/sabbatical” without pay up to September. The decision comes after Jet sent all its big-wage expat pilots on furlough, or long leaves, without pay last week.

Meanwhile, Jet’s pilot union on Tuesday wrote to aviation minister Suresh Prabhu requesting the government to ensure the airline pays salary dues of January, February, and March with interest. TNN

DGP gets contempt notice over bogus expert report

J K Tripathy, an officer in the rank of director general of police, has landed in hot water with the Madras high court. The court has initiated suo motu contempt of court proceedings against him for having filed a bogus expert opinion in court to deny appointment to an eligible candidate for a sub-inspector post.

Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB), of which Tripathy is chairperson, filed an ‘expert report’ in the high court claiming that IIT Madras professor D Moorthy had prepared it. But when verified, it was revealed that IIT-M did not have a faculty member by that name on its rolls and that Moorthy was a retired school teacher, who was merely asked by the TNUSRB to solve a mathematics problem. On Tuesday, after initiating contempt proceedings, Justice S M Subramaniam issued a statutory notice to Tripathy and directed the registry to list the case on April 5 when the officer would have to appear in person.

“It is unfortunate to state that such a bogus expert opinion obtained by way of impersonation was knowingly filed by the board. Therefore, the officials of the board are certainly responsible and accountable for the act which has resulted in denial of justice to the litigant. This not only amounts to interference with the administration of justice but also miscarriage of justice,” Justice Subramaniam said.

However, in a boon to the petitioner, the board submitted that it would give half a mark to all nine aggrieved people, including petitioner S Arunachalam, and include their names on the provisional list for appointment.

The issue pertains to a recruitment drive for sub-inspector (finger print) in 2018. Arunachalam, a grade-II constable, applied for the post but missed selection by half a mark. Aggrieved, he approached the high court alleging that he missed out on the score due to a wrong answer key. However, based on the ‘expert opinion’ produced by the board, Arunachalam’s plea was dismissed.

Subsequently, when Arunachalam found that there was no ‘expert’ identified as ‘Professor’ D Moorthy at IIT-M, he brought it to the court’s attention. The board also admitted that the ‘opinion’ was bogus and informed the court that criminal cases had been initiated against G V Kumar, who, the board said, was instrumental in obtaining the opinion.

In his affidavit, Moorthy said he was unaware that his ‘opinion’ would be filed before the court. He said: “Kumar was my professor in Madras University. He called me over phone and requested (that I) solve the mathematics problem. I solved it and sent it via-WhatsApp. Thereafter, Kumar requested me to visit the office of the member-secretary. There I was asked by the personal assistant of the IG to solve the problem on a blank sheet which was later printed and on which I was told to affix my signature. But when I signed it, nothing other than my name was found on the sheet. The designation ‘professor IIT-M’ had been inserted in the office of the IG.”

When the court asked about Kumar’s relationship with the board, N K Senthamaraikannan, an IG rank officer and membersecretary of the board, told the court that Kumar was a consultant hired by the Board to prepare question papers.

Chennai parents allege CBSE school failed LKG kid, demand return of fees

CHENNAI: Parents of a kid studying in lower kindergarten on Tuesday alleged that a CBSE school at Adyar detained their ward in the same class since she was unable to cope up with the syllabus and also forcibly made them write a letter assuring that their ward be retained in the same class.

The parents demanded their fee be returned and also wanted the State government to initiate action against the erring school authorities. P Jaishankar, a driver with MTC and his wife J Hemavathi, of Tiruvanmayur, admitted their three-year-old child in Bharath Senior Secondary School in kindergarten last year. However, when the results were out in the middle of March, the parents were called separately and were informed by the teacher that their ward results were being withheld since the grades were poor, said the parents while addressing the press.

Hemavathi said even the next academic year first term fee of Rs 15275 for their ward for LKG was also paid as per the instruction of the teachers in the school after a consent letter of studying in the same class was obtained on the same day of the result.“ Since a number of students are on waiting list for LKG, the coordinator wanted us to write a letter and pay the fees the same day”, she said.

The parents further alleged that they were unable to meet the principal of the institution. A total of Rs 65273 paid to the school was demanded by the parents. A Senthil Arumugam, general secretary, Satta Panchayat Iyakkam said, “As per the Right to Education norms, a student is not supposed to be failed till Class V. However, private institutions across the State are detaining students, which is illegal”.


He further added that the State government has to seriously take action against such private schools, which will set an example for other institutions.Refuting the allegations, the school principal K Prem Shantha told Express that the allegations raised by the parents had never come to her purview and assured that the issue will be sorted out. She also emphasised that the school never took such letters from parents forcibly.

BDU secures A+ ranking in third cycle

Under NAAC’s new framework

Bharathidasan University has secured A+ ranking in the third cycle of accreditation under the new framework of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), placing itself on a strong pedestal to receive more Central funding and strengthening the reach of its distance education programme.

Bharathidasan University is the first State university in Tamil Nadu to get A+ accreditation with institutional CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) of 3.32 on a four-point scale, after the new framework came into effect since July 2017, Vice-Chancellor P. Manisankar told media persons on Tuesday.

The seven Cumulative Grade Point Average criteria encompassed curricular aspects; teaching-learning and evaluation; research, innovations and extension; infrastructure and learning resources; student support and progression; governance, leadership and management; and institutional values and best practices.

The third cycle of NAAC assessment will be valid till April 1, 2024. The stride has placed BDU among top 15% of universities in the country with A+ and A++ status, the Vice-Chancellor said.

The latest score is well above the minimum of 3.26 points stipulated last year by University Grants Commission and Distance Education Bureau as eligibility for universities to offer distance education programmmes.

The university faced a disadvantage as it secured only 3.16 points in the second cycle of accreditation in 2013.

This time, the university secured 85.10% in qualitative metrics based on online submission of self-study report, and 77.1% in quantitative metrics through peer team visit last month, evaluated in the ratio of 70:30.

The five-member team visited all departments of the university from March 26-28.

By virtue of A+ ranking, BDU will be in a position to receive substantial funding under RUSA (Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan) and other Central schemes, Mr. Manisankar said.

Also, the university is looking forward to increasing the learning centres for distance education to 200, and restoring enrolment substantially.

Enrolment in distance education programmes fell drastically to 8,000 last year from 28,000 a few years ago due to NAAC stipulation of minimum points for universities to offer distance education programmes.

The strength was increased to 11,000 over the last one year. There is scope for restoring enrolment to the previous level since many institutions will evince interest to start learning centres following the latest National Assessment and Accreditation Council ranking, he added.

A Kenyan student, who was studying at a private college here, was sentenced to life by the Mahila Court here on Tuesday for raping a 22-year-old Kenyan woman in 2016.

Eric Mulinge Nethuli (26) was studying Masters in Business Administration at a private college here in 2016.

The victim, who was also a student at the same college, reportedly invited Eric for dinner to her place and Eric raped her. A case was registered by Ammapettai All Women Police Station.

On Tuesday, the court sentenced him to six-and-a-half years of imprisonment under sections 342,352, 506 part 1, and Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Women Harassment Act and life imprisonment under Section 376 - all to be served concurrently.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 17,500 on the convict.

He has been lodged in Puzhal prison.

Seek details of report on two professors

Students of Madras Christian College went on strike on the campus on Tuesday, demanding that the authorities share the details of a report prepared on two professors from the zoology department.

A group of 34 students had filed a complaint with the college principal in the first week of February seeking action against two faculty members for sexual misconduct during a study tour organised a couple of months earlier.

The college had instituted a departmental inquiry, following which disciplinary action was initiated.

Severe action demanded

The students were, however, not satisfied with the response and demanded severe action against the teachers.

On Tuesday, the students staged a sit in, demanding that the report of the committee subsequently constituted to inquire into their complaint be read out to them.

After nearly two hours of talks when the students refused to back down, principal in-charge A. Duraisamy read out the report to the students.

The principal, R.W. Alexander Jesudasan, is out of the country and is expected to return on April 15.

The second committee included an alumnus, a lawyer and the head of women students.

Students were told that the report would be submitted on April 6 to the internal complaints committee for further action.

One of the protesters said the college had only decided to bar the erring faculty from participating in tours till 2022 and from examination-related activities.

After nearly two hours of talks when the students refused to back down, Mr. Duraisamy, read out the report to the students.

The Governor has appointed retired High Court judge P. Devadass as the chairperson of the five-member Lokayukta that was notified on Monday.

The notification was issued following the recommendations made by a search committee.

Four members

Former district judges K. Jayabalan and R. Krishnamoorthy are the two judicial members and retired IAS officer M. Rajaram and advocate K. Arumugam are the two non-judicial members of the anti-corruption body, according to the notification issued by the Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department.

“The chairperson and the members shall hold office for five years from the day they enter office or the date on which they attain the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier,” stated the notification.

It was in December last year the State government constituted a search committee for submitting names for the posts of the chairperson and members of the Lokayukta.

Retired High Court judge K. Venkataraman was the chairperson of the panel. Former Advocate General R. Krishnamoorthy and retired IPS officer A. Pari were the other members on the search committee. In July last year, the Tamil Nadu government passed the legislation in the Assembly a day before the deadline set by the Supreme Court in this regard.

In November that year, the State government notified the Tamil Nadu Lokayukta Rules, 2018.

Complaints against a public functionary can be submitted to the Registrar or the designated officer in person or by post, but anonymous complaints would not be entertained by the panel.

When the State government invited Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin to participate in the meeting called over constituting the search committee in December last year, he boycotted it, contending that his objections expressed before the passing of the legislation were ignored and the Bill was passed in a hurried manner.

It may be recalled that Mr. Devadass’ judgment in June 2015 during his tenure in the Madras High Court suggesting mediation between a rape convict and the survivor, resulted in a huge furore from across the country.

The judge had then recalled his judgment and eventually cancelled the bail granted to the rape convict.

Demands report on persons with such degrees in service

Taking serious note of the fact that law degree courses were completed by people who did not attend classes, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday sought a response from the State on how many persons with such law degrees were working in various departments.

A Division Bench of Justices N. Kirubakaran and S. S. Sundar suo motu impleaded the Chief Secretary in the case and sought a report on such persons employed and whether they had been promoted.

The court was hearing the petition filed by advocate K. Karmegan of Virudhunagar, who brought to light an instance of a person having obtained law degree without attending classes.

The petitioner complained that R. Sivabagyam of Madurai, currently Law Officer with Madurai Corporation, had obtained her law degree from Al-Ameen College of Law in Bengaluru when she was a full-time employee of the Corporation.

He claimed that Sivabagyam was initially appointed as a nursing orderly and subsequently posted as typist and then promoted as Assistant on compassionate grounds.

When she had been employed as Assistant with the Corporation, she reportedly joined a law degree course and obtained her degree in 2000 without attending classes regularly. However, it was submitted that though she had completed her L.L.B. without permission from the Corporation, she was allowed to complete L.L.M.

She was then appointed as Law Officer, when she was working as Superintendent, based on her law degree.

The petitioner sought a direction to restrain her from carrying out her duties as Law officer.

He said that the degree obtained by her was invalid and action must be taken against the Bengaluru law college.

The court sought details of Sivabagyam’s salary, attendance and service register and adjourned the hearing.

Air Force doctor revives cancer patient who suffered cardiac arrest on-board IndiGo flight

A cancer patient from Bangladesh was on-board an IndiGo flight from Pune to Kolkata. She suffered a cardiac arrest midair. 

Following an announcement from the crew, the Air Force doctor volunteered and saved her with help of two other doctors.

A Bangladeshi passenger who suffered a cardiac arrest on board an Indigo flight from Pune to Kolkata was rescued by an Indian Air Force (IAF) doctor on Friday.

A middle-aged cancer patient from Bangladesh was on-board the Indigo flight number 6E-523, which took off from Pune early Friday morning. Her condition deteriorated midway and she collapsed inside the flight.

Soon an announcement was made by the crew seeking medical assistance from any doctor, if present among the passengers. Following which, IAF Group Captain Dr. TVSVGK Tilak, who was on-board the flight volunteered to help.

''On hearing that a patient requires medical assistance I alerted the air hostess. I attended the lady, a lung cancer patient and she was clearly in distress,'' Dr Tilak, who is posted at the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, told India Today TV.

With the assistance of the crew, he began performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and revived the patient within a minute. Subsequently, a medical oncologist who was also travelling alongside Dr Tilak attended the patient and administered emergency medicine and oxygen.

"Two other colleagues luckily helped, one surgical oncologist and a neurosurgeon came and established the IV. We didn't have a nebuliser so we gave her an inhaler. Thereafter the patient was stabilised," the Air Force doctor said.

After the patient had recovered, the flight finally landed in Kolkata 45 minutes later at about 6am. The patient was rushed to a local hospital.

According to Dr Tilak, the patient was travelling with her daughter who had informed that she was already undergoing cancer treatment in Dhaka.

Happy that he could save a life, the Air Force doctor thanked IndiGo staff for their timely intervention to rescue the passenger during the emergency. "I'm thankful to the IndiGo crew. Although we didn't have all equipments but whatever was needed at that time was available," he said.

Result withheld over fee, MBBS students cry foul

The delay in the declaration of result of their final prof has left at least 75 MBBS students in the lurch.

The affected students, presently studying at government medical colleges at Amritsar, Patiala, and Faridkot, are of the 2014-15 batch of Chintpurni Medical College, which was shut following irregularities.

On the directions of the Supreme Court, 98 MBBS students were shifted to the three government colleges. While 41 were shifted to Faridkot, 30 Amritsar and 27 Patiala. A controversy started about two months back, when 18 students of Faridkot college, 30 Amritsar and 27 of Patiala college refused to pay Rs 3.22 lakh fee. They claimed that they would only pay fee as applicable for government students, not the government quota fee of private colleges.

While publishing the result of final prof part-II on March 28, the BFUHS withheld the result of these 75 students for non-payment of tuition fee.

The matter is sub judice ever since these students were shifted to the GMCs. The students and their parents have alleged that the Punjab and Haryana High Court has already directed the colleges to stick to the fee as per the government quota seat, which is Rs 28,350 until a final decision was taken.

They claim that last year, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), through a letter, had directed the colleges to take annual fees as applicable for government students.

On the other hand, the university authorities maintained that the letter was issued mistakenly and it was annulled by the department on March 6.

Dr Raj Bahadur, vice chancellor, BFUHS, said in the notification for the shifting of 98 students in September 2017, it was clearly mentioned that as the private medical colleges had refused to admit these students at government fee, they would pay government quota seat fee of private colleges, to which they had agreed.

A student of GMC, Patiala, said, “Ever since we were shifted from Chintpurni to GMC, we have been facing problems. Till date, the CMCH has not given our detailed mark sheets. Now when we are about to begin internship, we have been asked to pay lakhs of rupees within two weeks.”

Arun Batra, father of an affected student, said, “Earlier, the university had denied roll numbers to the students and now it has withheld the result. This is a case of contempt of court.”

Sushil Goyal, president, CMCH Parent Welfare Association, said, “The vice chancellor of BFUHS and Additional Health Secretary have turned a blind eye to the issue. The CM should intervene in the matter.”

Health Minister Brahm Mohindra, said, “If the matter is sub judice, I will not be able to comment, but the government has always helped these students. It was on Capt Amarinder’s directions that they were adjusted in government institutions in 2017 after the CMCH went bankrupt.”

Future at stake

In the absence of their result, if the 75 students fail to initiate one-year internship from April 1 onwards, they would not be eligible for NEET-PG, 2020, the entrance test for admission in MD and MS courses.

An employee can’t be kept under suspension for years together: Madras High Court

Chennai: Holding that an employee cannot be kept under suspension for years together without any progress in departmental disciplinary proceedings, the Madras high court came to the rescue of an employee, who was under suspension for over 10 years. The court quashed an order of the Chennai Corporation dated April 24, 2008, suspending him from service for allegedly demanding and accepting bribe.

Allowing the petition filed by the employee R. Velmurugan, Justice S.M. Subramaniam directed the Chennai Corporation to reinstate him in service. The Chennai Corporation is directed to post the petitioner in any one of non-sensitive posts till the conclusion of the departmental disciplinary proceedings as well as the criminal case registered against the petitioner, the judge added.

Challenging the criminal case registered against the petitioner by the Department of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, the counsel for the petitioner stated that the said criminal case was still pending and the trial was in progress. However, keeping the petitioner under suspension for an unspecified period was bad in law, he added.

Counsel for the Chennai Corporation submitted that the petitioner was trapped and arrested for the allegation of demand and acceptance of bribe. Therefore, no leniency can be shown and the petition was liable to be rejected, she added.

The judge said prolonged suspension was bad in law. On initiation of disciplinary proceedings undoubtedly an employee shall be placed under suspension by the competent authority. However, competent authorities must ensure that departmental disciplinary proceedings initiated against the employee were concluded within a reasonable period of time. In the event of an enormous delay in concluding the departmental disciplinary proceedings, then the competent authorities must review the order of suspension for its revocation.

If it was not possible for the authorities to conclude the departmental disciplinary proceedings, then the order of suspension can be revoked and the employees shall be reinstated into service and posted in any non-sensitive post till the conclusion of the departmental disciplinary proceedings as well as the criminal case registered against him, the judge added.

The judge said disposal of the criminal case may take long years by the competent court of law. However, there was no bar for the disciplinary authorities to continue the departmental disciplinary proceedings even during the pendency of the criminal case. If the files, materials and other records were available with the authorities, then they were at liberty to continue the departmental disciplinary proceedings, conclude the same and pass final orders pending disposal of the criminal case, the judge added.

The judge said if an employee, after departmental disciplinary proceedings, was convicted by the competent court of law, then further actions shall be taken or the earlier orders shall be reviewed for issuing appropriate orders based on the conviction. There was no impediment for the authorities on initiation of fresh proceedings, if a public servant was convicted in criminal case by the competent court of law. This being the legal principles settled by the Constitutional Courts, the authorities need not keep an employee under suspension for an unspecified period.

Keeping an employee under suspension for long years and paying subsistence allowance for an unspecified period was causing financial loss to the state exchequer. Payment of subsistence allowance without extracting work was a financial loss to the state exchequer. Thus, the authorities must be vigilant and review the order of suspension periodically and if there was no impediment, conclude the disciplinary proceedings and pass final orders, the judge added.

The judge said in the case on hand, the order of suspension was issued long back and the petitioner was under continuous suspension without any progress in the departmental disciplinary proceedings as well as the criminal case. “This being the factum of the case, this court is of an opinion that there is no useful purpose would be served in keeping the petitioner under suspension for further period”, the judge added.

CHENNAI : Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo on Monday said the Election Commission of India would act, based on the ‘gravity’ of the situation in the Vellore parliamentary constituency where huge amounts of unaccounted money were seized earlier in the day. Asked whether the ECI would countermand the elections in Vellore constituency following the seizure of huge cash, Sahoo said, “The Commission will take into account many aspects before taking such a decision.

It is premature to talk about countermanding elections. We have to get a report from the District Election Officer as well as from the I-T department involved in the searches.” Sahoo also said that till Sunday, the total seizure of unaccounted money stood at Rs 78.12 crore.

Besides, 328 kg of gold, 409 kg of silver and some other materials worth Rs 93.36 crore had been seized. Responding to a question, the CEO said that so far, 80 FIRs had been filed against political functionaries on complaints of model code violations across the State.

CHENNAI: Nearly three years after a State transport bus fatally hit a 47-year-old man near Marakkanam, a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal has directed TNSTC, Villupuram, to pay a compensation of Rs 36.73 lakh to the family. The deceased, A Sampathkumar, was going on a bike when the bus hit him and speed away.
According to a petition submitted by S Kausalya, the wife of the deceased, on May 17, 2016, a TNSTC bus plying near Palayar Madam on ECR hit the bike. The accident occurred because the bus was driven in a rash and negligent manner, the petitioner added.

The victim, a materials manager in a private company, died in a hospital. He was the sole breadwinner.

Counsel for the transport corporation submitted that the accident was never caused by the bus. 

The tribunal headed K Ayyappan observed that in a petition filed before the HC, the bus driver had specifically admitted that TNSTC Corporation had initiated disciplinary action against him. To this, the petitioner’s counsel argued that if the driver was not involved in the accident, the department should not have initiated action. The tribunal asked TNSTC to pay the compensation.

CHENNAI: For failing to deliver a parcel and also losing it, District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Chennai (South), directed the Franch Express to pay a compensation of Rs 21,000. Shobhit Shah, a resident of Narasingapuram near Mount Road, booked a parcel to be sent to Sithalapakkam, which never reached the person concerned.

The complainant submitted that by paying a sum of Rs 8,500 in 2012, he sent a Wii play console to one Preetha Chandrashekar in Sithalapakkam through the firm. However, the delivery was never made. The courier network also refused to refund the amount.

Denying the allegations, the courier network submitted that the parcel usually takes only 24 hours for delivery and if the door is locked or the address is wrong, the delivery shall not be done.

Considering the oral and documentary evidence, the forum presided by M Mony observed that the consignment usually reaches the destination within 24 hours, but in this case, the parcel was found to be missing. The forum directed the firm at Kilpauk to pay the compensation.

CHENNAI: University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a letter to universities and affiliated colleges to start preparations for 5th International Day of Yoga (IDY) to be celebrated on June 21.
The commission has asked varsity authorities to organise “run up” event for the IDY on May 2, (50 days ahead of the event). Colleges and universities are concerned as amid the elections, they will be facing problem in making arrangements for the run up activities for Yoga day.

“Our staff is busy with election duty and examination arrangements and amidst all this we hardly have any manpower or time to make arrangements for IDY. Probably, after elections we will decide what to do on Yoga day,” said a principal of a city college.

“Elections in Tamil Nadu will be held on April 18 and after that we will have handful of days to organise the run up for the event. I do not know how we will make arrangements for the day,” said a senior faculty member of a university

The UGC has written to all Vice-Chancellors last week asking them to organise activities to promote Yoga among youth and invoke sentiments of National pride in proliferating Yoga to the rest of the world. 

In the letter, it has mentioned that the ministry of AYUSH has taken up preparation for celebration of International Day of Yoga with greater and more active participation of students and teachers during the current year celebration. The UGC has further suggested measures to the institutes to celebrate the IDY 2019 in a befitting manner.

The commission has suggested to universities and colleges to adopt yoga as a part of activities to encourage physical well-being and to focus on common yoga protocol(CYP) which consists of 45 minute sequence of relatively simple yoga drills. The UGC has also said in the letter to keep the essential facilities open during summer vacation for Yoga Programs to be attended by teachers and students. 

The letter addressed to Vice-Chancellors says “You are also requested to arrange such events as run-up activities on 2nd May 2019 (50 days to the event).”

Huge cash haul from premises of Durai Murugan’s ‘associate’

Mr. Durai Murugan’s son Kathir Anand is contesting from the Vellore Parliamentary constituency in the general elections.

During the day, searches were also conducted at educational institutions and premises managed by Mr. Anand. At the time of going to print, the searches that began in the morning were still on at some of the locations in Vellore. Currency counting machines were also requisitioned from local banks.

While usually the I-T department maintains absolute secrecy of search operations, on Monday video clips and photos of cash bundles being examined were circulated all day on mobile messaging platforms, though the source of the same remained uncertain.

Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo told journalists in Chennai that only on the basis of the I-T department’s report would they be able to conclude if the cash belonged to any candidate or party. While DMK president M.K. Stalin charged that the I-T searches were conducted at the behest of the BJP-led Central government to intimidate the Opposition, Mr. Durai Murugan alleged that there was a conspiracy to rescind the poll notification in Vellore Lok Sabha constituency and two Assembly constituencies in the region where bypolls are due. “They have miscalculated that by targeting they can intimidate the others in the DMK. Today it is me, tomorrow it will be someone else. But this is being done by those who can’t read the people’s mind,” he said.

Mr. Durai Murugan further alleged that his son had effectively been prevented from campaigning for the last three days by the ongoing searches. I-T officials had on Saturday searched Mr. Durai Murugan’s house and an engineering college in Christianpet near Katpadi managed by Mr. Anand and recovered Rs. 10.50 lakh “excess” cash and some documents. Searches were conducted on Monday at six places including at another DMK functionary Asther Ali’s house in Kalpudhur and a school managed by Mr. Anand. Though searches in these two premises were completed by evening, the outcome was not immediately known.

In another case reported from Coimbatore, the I-T department seized Rs. 9.83 crore in cash. “The assessee is a young man by the name G. Ramesh, the proprietor of Universal Trading Solutions, who was collecting deposits from the public promising high returns. He trades in the commodities market,” the EC said. In Tamil Nadu, Rs. 108.75 crore in cash and precious metals valued at Rs. 93 crore had been seized so far, it added.

Special fare train to clear summer rush

The Southern Railway has introduced special fare special train to clear summer rush. According to a release, train no. 02197 Coimbatore - Jabalpur special fare special train will leave Coimbatore at 7.05 p.m on Mondays between June 10 and July 1 and would reach Jabalpur at 10.20 a.m on Wednesdays.

The train would stop at Palakkad, Shoranur, Tirur, Kozhikkode, Vadakara,Thalassery, Kannur, Payyanur, Khanhangad, Mangalore Jn, Mulki, Udupi, Kundapura, Mookambika Road Byndoor, Kumta, Karwar, Madgoan, Thivim, Kudal, Kankavali, Ratnagiri, Chiplun, Khed, Roha, Panvel, Igatpuri, Manmad, Bhusaval, Khanwa, Harda, Itarsi, Pipariya, Gadarwara and Narsinghpur. Advance reservations for the train would begin on April 2.

The Southern Railway has rescheduled trains in Tiruchirappalli division on April 2 due to bridge works in the division.

According to a release, train no. 76836/76833 Karur - Tiruchi- Karur DEMU passenger is partially cancelled between Tiruchirappalli Junction and Tiruchi Fort. Train no. 56110 Erode -Tiruchirappalli Passenger is partially cancelled between Tiruchi fort and Tiruchirappalli Junction. Train no. 56713 Tiruchirappalli- Palakkad Town passenger is rescheduled to leave Tiruchirappalli Junction at 3 p.m. Train no. 56712 Palakkad Town -Tiruchirappalli Junction passenger will be regulated for two hours between Erode and Tiruchirappalli fort.

The Southern Railway has cancelled a few trains due to pre non-interlocking work for commissioning of Arakkonam – Takkolam Detour line. The changes would affect services of trains between April 5 and 14.

According to a release, services of train no. 22208 Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai Central Superfast AC express on April 7 and 10, train no. 22207 Chennai central-  Thiruvananthapuram Superfast AC express on April 5 and 9, train no. 12243 Chennai Central- Coimbatore Shatabdi express between April 11 and 14, train no. 12244 Coimbatore Junction - Chennai Central Shatabdi express between April 11 and 14, train no. 12682 Coimbatore - Chennai Central Superfast express on April 12 and train no. 12681 Chennai Central - Coimbatore Jn Superfast express on April 13 are fully cancelled.

High Court Bench directs recovery of compensation

Petitioner lost his legs after he came in contact with a live wire

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed the Joint Commissioner of Labour (Workmen’s compensation) to recover the compensation amount awarded by the Labour Commissioner Tribunal of Dindigul to a daily wager, who lost both his legs after coming in contact with a live wire during work hours.

Justice Abdul Quddhose said under Section 31 of the Employees Compensation Act, 1923, the Commissioner of Labour was empowered to recover the compensation awarded to a workmen as he was deemed to be public officer within the meaning of Section 5 of the Revenue Recovery Act, 1890.

Accordingly, the Commissioner should recover the amount within four months, the court said.

The court said that the award of compensation had attained finality as no appeal was preferred against the order. Though representation was made to the Collector for recovering the amount, it was the Commissioner of Labour alone who was empowered to recover the compensation. The Labour Commissioner Tribunal had awarded Rs. 4.72 lakh with an interest of 12% per annum to the daily wager.

The petitioner, S. Pandi of Dindigul, sought a direction to recover the compensation amount from his employer. He lost both his legs after he came in contact with a live wire at a construction site, where he was engaged as a daily wager.

HC asks State not to finalise PG medical, dental counselling results

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday directed the Directorate of Medical Education not to finalise results of the ongoing counselling for medical and dental PG degree/diploma courses held under the Tamil Nadu State quota.

The four-day counselling forcandidates who qualified through NEET began on April 1.

Justice R. Mahadevan, allowing the counselling to continue, directed that results shall not be finalised for a period of two weeks and adjourned the hearing till then. The court was hearing the writ petition filed by P. Jeyakumar of Madurai, who sought a direction to restrain the Directorate of Medical Education from going ahead with PG counselling. The petitioner, an Assistant Surgeon, challenged the government order issued by the Health and Family Welfare department in March 2019 awarding 10% of NEET marks secured by Medical Officers working under the Tamil Nadu Public Health Services as incentive for securing a PG seat.

The grievance of the petitioner was that the GO categorised ‘difficulty of areas of work’ for the purpose of granting incentives. Candidates working at difficult areas in hills were eligible for 10% of marks secured in NEET per year of service. Similarly, it was nine per cent marks for working in difficult areas in plains, eight per cent for remote areas and five per cent for rural areas.

Dr. Jeyakumar, currently employed at the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai, said that this would adversely affect the chances of medical officers working in municipal and corporation areas, which are excluded from the purview of granting incentive marks.

He sought to restrain the Directorate of Medical Education from going ahead with the counselling.

283 PG seats allotted in govt. colleges on day 1 of counselling

Radiology and paediatrics are the most preferred courses

When it comes to a PG medical degree radiology continues to be the first choice of MBBS students. On the first day of counselling for PG medical State quota seats, toppers chose radiology.

The second choice was paediatrics. Similarly, two candidates with All-India Rank 9 and 10 in NEET have been allotted M.D. Radiodiagnosis in the Madras Medical College.

Medical educators said introduction of modern technology such as MRI and CT scans sways the students’ choice. For the past few years now, gynaecology is also being passed up, they added.

Single-window system

On Monday, the Directorate of Medical Education began the single window system of counselling for general categories for State quota seats in PG programmes in government and self-financing medical colleges.

As many as 367 of the 492 candidates called for counselling by the Selection Committee participated and 290 seats were allotted.

A total of seven seats were allotted in self-financing colleges and 283 in government ones.

While seven candidates opted out of counselling 125 candidates remained absent and 72 candidates chose to be wait-listed.

Classes commence on May 1 and the admission process will close on May 18.
