Luggage belonging to at least 24 passengers had to be offloaded from an Indigo flight Monday due to overweight issues in the aircraft at the Dubai airport, officials said. The luggage has been sent to the address of the passengers. According to Indigo airline officials in Chandigarh, they had reports of 24 such PNR’s where the luggage was offloaded from the airline at the airport on Monday morning.

“There has to be to complete balance of fueling and the luggage load in the aircraft. Due to overloading and overweight some of the luggage was then taken off from the aircraft,” said an official. Sources said that the passenger were informed about the problem before the aircraft took-off from the Dubai airport, but it was not mentioned specifically whose luggage was offloaded.

Soon after the flight arrived at the Chandigarh International airport, passengers had to face a lot of inconvenience as they had to wait for long looking for their luggage. The Indigo airline officials claimed that the luggage has been now delivered to the passengers. “We had asked the passengers to fill a form and provide the details about the missing luggage. All the passengers filled the forms and then the luggage was sent to the addresses,” said another official from the airline.

On Tuesday, passengers traveling in an Indigo flight to New Delhi had to face inconvenience after the aircraft developed a technical snag at the airport. The passengers were accommodated in other airline by the Indigo management.

Hyderabad: Man finds insect in Jet Airways biriyani

I was shocked to find a dead fly in the biryani served to me, said Krishna Mohan Nyayapati.

Insect found in biriyani served in Jet Airways.

Hyderabad: A city-based passenger travelling aboard a Jet Airways flight had a bitter experience when he found an insect in the food that he was served.

Krishna Mohan Nyayapati, who was travelling from Hyderabad to Mumbai by Jet Airways Flight 9W 7081/S2 4460 on Monday, ordered a meal and was horrified to find an insect in his biryani.

“It is with great anguish and pain that I bring to your notice the horrible standards of hygiene that the staff of Jet Airways maintain while serving passengers. During the course of my lunch, I was shocked to find a dead fly in the biryani served to me. I am not sure how an airline which boasts of international standards can be so careless and maintain such unhygienic conditions while serving passengers food,” Mr Nyayapati said.

He said that he had lodged a complaint with in-flight attendant Rylan John. “I was surprised that there was no formal format or book for the filing of a complaint. The attendant just noted down my complaint on a piece of paper. Upon reaching Mumbai, I immediately sent Jet Airways a formal complaint by email. So far I have not received any reply apart from an acknowledgement from them,” he said.

The staff of Jet Airways in Hyderabad refused to comment on the issue.

Chennai airport customs officials expose yet another modus operandi of smugglers

Siddharth Prabhakar| TNN | Oct 13, 2017, 20:52 IST

CHENNAI: Customs officials at Chennai airport have exposed yet another modus operandi of smugglerswhere an international traveller who brings in the goods passes them on to accomplices who join them in the domestic leg of the journey.

On Friday morning, officials of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) intercepted two women, who were carrying concealed gold worth Rs 18 lakh and brand new gadgets like four Apple iPhone 8s, one iPad Pro and three Samsung Galaxy 8s worth Rs 4.3 lakh in their baggage.

The women have been identified as Noorjahan (39) and her daughter, Alfiya (23), who arrived here from Thiruvananthapuram on Air India flight AI 968. This flight had an international leg from Sharjah to Thiruvananthapuram.

Upon interrogation by officials, the duo confessed that the goods had been given to them by Ahamad Thahir (33) who had come from Sharjah. The ladies joined him during the domestic leg of the flight, and the goods were to be brought by them as they could evade customs duty at the Chennai airport. The transfer was made inside the flight.

Customs officials grew suspicious when they noticed that one woman was carrying a brand new iPad in her hand and was passing through the green channel without declaring it. They were then searched thoroughly when the other gadgets and the concealed gold were found.
The gold was in the form of two chains of 24 carat purity and was concealed inside the clothes.

A case was filed against the trio under the Customs Act 1962. They were arrested.

CHENNAI: Nearly 400 passengers were stranded in Chennai Airport after two international airlines suffered technical snags on Wednesday. A British Airways flight carrying 213 passengers and eight crew members, which was to depart from Chennai to London, suffered technical glitches while taxiing and had to return after the Air Traffic Control was informed. After several attempts to resolve the problem failed, the passengers were offloaded. The aircraft is likely to take off at 5.30 am on Thursday.
Similarly, a Malaysian Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur, which was scheduled to depart at 11.50 am, cancelled the boarding passes half-an hour before landing at Chennai citing technical problems. There were 183 passengers already aboard the flight. Sources in the Air Traffic Control said the aircraft were stranded due to technical problems. There was no intimation from Malaysian Airlines on when the flight will depart.
Adequate arrangements have been made by British Airways for the stranded outstation air passengers, said officials.

Alexandre Ziegler

Jet Airways service to start from October 29

Jet Airways is all set to start its direct flight from Chennai to Paris from October 29. The service will operate five times a week from Chennai with a travel time of nine-and-a-half hours to Paris; transit may otherwise cost a passenger another three to four hours.
Alexandre Ziegler, Ambassador of France to India, said there were already 40 non-stop flights to Paris from other cities, including Mumbai and Delhi. “We have a fast growing footprint in Tamil Nadu, especially in Chennai, with a rapidly increasing French community. On the infrastructure front too, the growth has been significant and fast as we have about 20 companies here,” he added.
He noted that they planned to facilitate the visa issuance for visitors within 48 hours.
Sheetal Munshaw, director (India) of Atout France - France Tourism Development Agency, said, France had 83 million visitors from across the world in 2016. “France has received three awards the past year — the best honeymoon destination, second city of preference after London and also best destination for indulgence. We have a lot more women travellers too these days,” she added.
France has also been looked at as a stop for destination wedding by many Indians, she added.
Vinay Dube, chief executive officer, Jet Airways, said, “For those looking to travel beyond Paris, we have a code share agreement with airlines like Air France, KLM and Delta Airlines which can take them to destinations in Europe and North America too.”
He noted they have placed an order for 75 Boeing 737 aircraft and have plans to order another 75-100 narrow body aircraft.

Are birds bothering pilots at Chennai airport?

TNN | Updated: Oct 10, 2017, 06:08 IST

Representative imageRepresentative image
CHENNAI: Instances of pilots complaining about suspected bird strikes near Chennai are going up. These are not actual bird hits but suspicions of strikes recorded after pilots spot birds as they take off or come into land.

Statistics show that suspected bird hits have shot up from 38 in 2015-16 to 58 in 2016-17. These figures are based on reports filed by pilots who suspected that a bird must have hit the aircraft. However, investigation found that there were no actual strikes.

Pilots report to the air traffic control and the ground crew when they spot birds. If the pilot reports a suspected hit, ground engineers inspect the wings, engines, fuselage and nose of the flight after landing to confirm damages while the airport staff inspect the runway. If a pilot reports a suspected hit while take-off but readings inside show nothing amiss, the aircraft continues towards its destination where it is checked upon landing. If readings show otherwise, the flight makes an immediate landing. Other pilots are also informed about the bird sighting, or hit, so that they can take precaution. Aircraft manufacturers have provided a long check list detailing what action should be taken following a strike.

"Bird strikes have not been reported but the number of suspected strikes are up. This is also not good but checks are done. All these instances have been reported outside the airport campus," a senior Airports Authority of India official said.

As per rule, areas within a 10km radius of an airport should not have garbage dumps or crowded markets that will attract birds, especially kites. Though environmental committee meetings are held with the state government, there is no efficient garbage disposal near the airport. "The approach path to the main and second runways has densely-populated areas. We insist on garbage disposal," the official said.

A pilot blamed the populated neighbourhoods for the presence of birds. He said people flash laser beams on aeroplanes. "If there is no evidence of a bird strike, the aircraft will be released for operations. Otherwise it will be grounded for inspection and repairs," the pilot said.

Pilots take a few steps to prevent or minimise bird strikes like keeping the aircraft's speed at 250 knots below 10,000ft, and executing a fast and sharp climb to reduce exposure to birds. If there is a bird hit and the engines get affected, pilots plan an additional length of landing distance so that the aircraft will get the adequate distance on the runway to slow down after touchdown without using thrust reversers.

An airport official said steps have been taken to keep birds off the airport. "An ultrasonic equipment that emits an irritating noise audible only to birds and reflectors were tried, but bursting crackers is the primary means of scaring away birds when they are spotted in the airport's operational area," he said.

Air Canada claims Mumbai-bound flight faced 'fuel constraints' as it wasn't provided diversion details

MUMBAI: A city-bound Air Canada flight from Toronto, which was not allowed to land in Mumbai last month due to a runway closure, was not provided details of alternative aerodromes by the Mumbai ATC, the airline has claimed.

Flight AC046, a Boeing aircraft, carrying 191 passengers and crew on board, eventually landed safely in Hyderabad despite "fuel constraints", Air Canada said.

The incident took place on September 19, the day Mumbai airport's main runway was closed due to skidding off of a SpiceJet aircraft after landing+ .

Canadian transport regulator has raised the issue with the Indian aviation authorities.

"On approach, the aircraft was placed in a holding pattern by Indian air traffic authorities due to an unrelated airport ground incident, but the Indian controllers did not provide details to enable the crew to make an assessment on diverting to an alternative airport," Air Canada spokesperson Angela Mah said in an e-mail statement to PTI.

Eventually the aircraft flew to Hyderabad, where it landed normally after obtaining priority to land due to "fuel constraints," the spokesperson said.

The runway closure had forced the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) to cancel over 160 flights and divert another 60-odd aircraft to nearby airports including Hyderabad and Ahmedabad.

The spokesperson also said the regulator Transport Canada is reviewing the Mumbai airport delay with Indian authorities.

"Air Canada followed all correct procedures and it is now a matter for Indian and Canadian aviation authorities," the spokesperson said.

An Air Traffic Control (ATC) official here, however, said the aerodromes where the flights were being diverted were also choking and it was getting increasingly difficult to accommodate more and more flights.

"The ATC did everything that was required for a safe landing of the aircraft," the official said, when asked about Air Canada's claims.

City’s second airport may come up in Kancheepuram or Tiruvallur

AAI officials say land availability is a problem in Sriperumbudur

Nearly 10 years ago, the State government announced a plan to build a second airport for Chennai at Sriperumbudur.
Thereafter, the Chennai airport went through phase I modernisation and a few years after the terminals were saturated phase II project is all set to begin in a few months. But even now, there isn’t a concrete proposal for the second airport for the city whose traffic has been growing rapidly.
Recently, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha too spoke of the need to have a greenfield airport for the city at the earliest.
The only development perhaps in recent times is that Sriperumbudur will no longer house the second airport and the State may choose from four other sites —Walajabad and Madhurantakam in Kancheepuram district and Alamathy and Gummidipoondi in Tiruvallur district.
Officials in Airports Authority of India (AAI) said the reason to look for alternate location arose owing to availability of land. “After the initial announcement, not much happened with the project and in the meantime, there have been a lot of development in the areas. Also, the available land are not together. The lands available now are few and far between. It will be extremely difficult to acquire the remaining lands,” he added.
Cost factor
Even if the State wants to acquire, the cost of the project will grow manifold, they said. “The guideline value has changed; plus, the market prices have multiplied enormously since the project was announced,” an official said.
Officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and AAI said they have had been meeting the State government authorities every now and then to push for the project.
“Recently, when we met the authorities, we asked them to identify a site so that the rest of the process can begin. We are waiting to hear from them,” an official said.
The sooner the process for the project begins, the better it is, they added. “Just getting permissions from various authorities will take a few years. After that, the construction will consume another 4-5 years. By that time, the phase II modernisation also would not be enough to cater to the city’s traffic,” he added.
When the new airport becomes operational, it is likely to have only international operations, say officials. The domestic operations may continue in the existing airport. “So if the new airport is located 40-50 km away, we need a direct overpass or a high speed rail corridor to transit passengers,” an official said.

Tiruchi - Bangkok flight service takes off

Thai AirAsia to operate four services a week in this sector

Tiruchi is now directly connected with Bangkok - one among the top tourist destinations in the world with foreign carrier Thai AirAsia launching service in the Tiruchi – Bangkok- Tiruchi sector.
Bangkok has become the sixth overseas destination to have direct links with Tiruchi after Colombo, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai and Sharjah following the introduction of flight service to the Thai capital from September 29 onwards.
The operation of new service to the prominent South East Asian destination would further spur overseas passenger traffic movements from and to Tiruchi. A water salute was given when the first Thai AirAsia flight from Bangkok touched down at the Tiruchi international airport in the early hours on September 29.
The airline will operate four services in a week from Tiruchi to Bangkok – on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday with the flights departing in the early hours from here.
Airline sources said the new service to Bangkok would be operated using A-320 Neo type aircraft with passenger seating capacity exceeding a little over 180.
The first flight left for Bangkok in the early hours of Friday with more than 160 passengers, while on Sunday the number of travellers to the Thai capital from here was more than 140, said the sources.
The new service would also enable travellers to fly to other domestic destinations in Thailand such as Phuket, Krabi and Chiang Mai besides to other overseas destinations such as Ho Chi Minh and Macau.
Although the airline has not begun to lift cargo, it might start lifting freight in the coming months, said the sources. Air Asia is on top with respect to operating number of overseas flights from Tiruchi, followed by Air India Express, Malindo Air, Sri Lankan Airlines and Tiger Airways.
The Tiruchi international airport today has the highest number of daily flights to Kuala Lumpur among non-metro international airports in the Southern region, said the sources.
