`Engg counselling to go online from '18-19'





The much-awaited counselling for admissions to engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu will begin at Anna University on July 17.The state government has also begun preparations to ensure that the counselling process takes place online from next year, higher education minister K P Anbalagan said on Thursday .

 

The minister told reporters at the secretariat that counselling for engineering seats in the general category will be held from July 23 to August 11.

While counselling for vocational groups would take place on July 17 and 18, counselling for seats in the differently-abled category would be held on July 19. Verification of sports quota certificates will take place on July 19 and 20, while counselling for sports quota seats will be held on July 21.

Registration for supplementary counselling for seats that have not been allotted will be held on August 16, while supplementary counselling will begin on August 17. Supplementary counselling for SCA to SC category will be on August 18. Anbalagan said that classes would most probably begin on September 1. The B Arch rank order will be published on August 10 and counselling will commence on August 19.

“The state government has decided to make the engineering admission counselling process online from the 2018-19 academic year to avoid having vacant seats in good colleges and to increase the enrollment of students. The government has started making all technical preparations on this front,“ he said. “Students can register for counselling and select their colleges online without having to come to Chennai,“ he said, adding that the new system “will be transparent“.

If students vacated engineering seats to go for medical or other courses, the seat would be allotted to the next student on the merit list automatically , he added.

He said the dates for engineering counselling this year were postponed because of the delay in announcing NEET results, as there would be a large number of vacant seats after counselling, if students leave to join medical courses. “We received 1,41,077 applications,“ he said.
The minister recalled that there was single-window counselling for engineering admissions in Tamil Nadu from 1997 to 2015 and there were 60 centres to distribute applications. “Since 2016, the application process has been taken online,“ he said.

Data shows a steady rise in area under the commercial crop

Despite the higher cost of cultivation and the risks involved, farmers in Tiruvarur district are showing increased preference for cotton. Their penchant for the commercial crop — over traditional paddy — has led to areas under it in the Cauvery delta region touching an all-time high of 7,350 hectare this year. During 2009-10, it was just 560 hectare.

At the same time, the auction of cotton at the regulated markets in the district since June has crossed 1,165 tonnes for a value of Rs. 5.63 crore. This is besides the quantum and cost realised by cotton growers who sold their produce to private traders across the district.

“Lack of adequate water for irrigation-intensive paddy forced us to think of an alternative crop. We turned to cotton like many others knowing full well the risks involved in raising the crop in Masi pattam. We are doing reasonably well though we are troubled by the price fluctuations due to factors such as rain,” said a cotton grower S. Jayalakshmi of Pilavadi village in Tiruvarur district.
The showers that wetted the district 10 days ago dampened the spirits of cotton growers, who got lesser price for their produce than usual. “In fact, there were three spells of rain in the last two months and they caused a reduction in purchase price. The traders are citing rain and dampness for the decline in price. We fall prey to our urge to sell the produce immediately after picking rather than wait for the cotton to dry a bit,” said a farmer P. Mani (62) of Valangaiman.

Data shows a steady rise in the area under cotton in Tiruvarur district over the years. This year, cotton has been raised on 7,359 hectare, while in 2015-16 it was 5,172. In 2014-15 cotton covered 2,733 ha, in 2013-14 it was 3,620 ha, and in 2012-13, 2,100 ha. During 2011-12, the area under cotton was 1,254 ha, while during the previous year it was 874 ha. During 2009-10, cotton was raised on just 560 ha.

The regulated markets for cotton in Tiruvarur, Kodavasal and Valagaiman have been seeing brisk auctions as many farmers take their produce there to trade directly with buyers through bids.
On Tuesday, at the Tiruvarur regulated market, the highest quote was Rs. 5,039 per quintal, a substantial amount for farmers. Since June, when the markets open for the season, the maximum price touched Rs. 5,339 a quintal, official sources said. Since June, a total of 1,095 tonne of cotton has been auctioned off at the Tiruvarur market for a value of Rs. 5.08 crore.
At the Valangaiman regulated market, 66 tonne has been auctioned for Rs. 30.10 lakh. And at the Kodavasal regulated market, 54 tonne has been auctioned for Rs. 25 lakh during the same period.
Last year, between June and October, the three regulated markets effected auctions valued at a total of Rs. 10.20 crore.

This year, half that amount has been crossed in just over a month, testifying to the growing popularity of cotton crop among Tiruvarur farmers.

‘Need to change mindset towards the entrance test’

Institutions offering coaching for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) have mushroomed in the city despite stiff opposition from the Tamil Nadu government against the entrance test for medical admissions.

Coaching and private tuition centres have sprung up in different parts of Tiruchi offering courses that promise to prepare higher secondary school students for the crucial examination.
Costing anywhere between Rs. 15000 to Rs. 1.5 lakh, the courses are of a varying duration, from a few weeks to one year. The centres have been advertising aggressively too. Some leading higher secondary schools (State and CBSE syllabus) have tied up with coaching centres for NEET preparatory courses. But how does this all translate into results?

“NEET training is a big opportunity for coaching centres, but the quality of education is a big question mark,” R.V.S. Muralidhar, managing director, Seekers Educational Services. The 17-year-old institution trains students for competitive and scholarship examinations, and is collaborating with several CBSE and Samacheer Kalvi schools in Tiruchi for NEET as well.

“Though 46,000 students in Tamil Nadu have cleared NEET, very few people have actually got good scores, which is what matters,” said Mr. Muralidhar.

S. Sethuraman, who runs the Nivedita Career Academy in Thillai Nagar, said that the State’s objection to NEET had delayed the application process, and left Tamil Nadu’s students unprepared for the examination’s format this year. “Most parents continue to be obsessed with the final board examination results and fail to realise that a competitive examination such as NEET requires at least a year’s preparation,” Mr. Sethuraman said. The centre’s ‘crash course’ costs Rs. 12,000, while a year-long course is pegged at Rs. 35,000. “Schools should invest more time and effort in teaching children how to attempt NEET but they prefer to see coaching centres as their rivals. Currently, schools are unfit to conduct NEET courses with their existing infrastructure,” he said.

Getting trained faculty is yet another issue that needs attention, said Mr. Muralidhar of Seekers. “When schools cannot find qualified staff for their daily teaching, how do coaching centres manage to get professionally trained teachers for these courses?” he asks. Mr. Muralidhar said that NEET would improve educational standards in the long run. “Our State Board syllabus is quite powerful on its own, but we need to train the teachers for NEET instruction separately,” he said. He advised parents and students to change their mindset towards the entrance test. “Most State board students are used to get questions ahead of the examination. So it is a presentation of lessons rather than any actual learning. A transition from this sort of spoon-feeding system has to take place soon,” said Mr. Muralidhar. “It is not fair to pamper children up to Class 10, and then suddenly subject them to highly competitive examination after school,” he said.

Applicant gets passport within five hours

Vikkas will be representing the nation in a sports event

A passport applicant, studying tenth standard and a medallist in swimming in his age group, received his passport within five hours of filing an application online at the Passport Seva Kendra.
He is expected to participate in the ninth Asian Age Group championships to be held in Uzbekistan in September.

P. Vikkas, being trained by Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), had set a national record in two categories at the 44th Junior National Aquatic Championship organised earlier this month by Swimming Federation of India in Pune.

In this connection, the boy had applied for his passport recently online. On the appointed date, he informed passport authorities at the PSK during interview that he would be representing the nation in a sports event. The officials immediately referred the application to Regional Passport Officer Maniswara Raja.

The process was taken up in top gear and the booklet was ready for delivery the same evening.
Happily, the boy received the passport from the RPO and thanked the personnel for their gesture. He told reporters that he would practise vigorously and bring home laurels from Uzbekistan.
The boy’s coach, Sarojini Devi, said that he had won gold in 50 metres freestyle and silver medals in 50 metres butterfly and 4x100 metres freestyle relay.
