MTC hires drivers for Rs 600, but people wary

CHENNAI: The Metropolitan Transport Corporation hired temporary drivers to run buses in the city on Friday by offering `600 to `800 as daily wage. Posters were put out at the depots to recruit drivers with a driving licence for heavy vehicles.

But a few passengers had a bitter experience with temporary drivers.

Some commuters got down from a bus moving towards Vadapalani after the passengers sensed that the driver without uniform was inexperienced in driving the MTC bus.

“The driver was visibly inexperienced in handling the bus and was speaking through his mobile phone for over 15 minutes. He was apparently telling a friend on the other end how he slept late last night after having a liquor because he should be driving the MTC bus for next two days at least,” said Janet Andrea, a private school teacher.

Transport unions alleged that members of the Anna Thozhilalar Peravai had brought in their friends who were driving autos and vans. “The bus driver who took the bus number A1 (with fleet number CDJ0051) was a van driver with no licence to drive heavy vehicle,” said a union member.

CHENNAI: Hours after the Madras High Court ordered them to call of their two-day-old strike, which has caused hardship to public, transport corporation unions today said their agitation would continue till their demands on wage revision were met by the Tamil Nadu government.

The unions, including DMK-affiliated LPF and CITU, rejected the state government's ultimatum to return to work or face 'consequences', issued following the court directive.

"There will be an interim order restraining the transport workers, specially, the drivers and conductors, from taking recourse to strike," the court said.

Any worker refraining from attending to work or performing duty shall do so at their own risk of the consequences thereof including "termination of their services and penalisation for gross contempt of this court," the court order said.

Claiming that they had not received the court order, the unions, which have rejected the wage increase proposed by the government, said they would present their case properly before the court on Monday.

The indefinite strike by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) workers since last night affected people in various parts of the state, even as the government said it was taking efforts to maintain the bus services.

Office-goers and students bore the brunt of the strike by employees owing allegiance to 17 unions.

A high court first bench headed by Chief Justice Indira Banerjee said workers could not resort to such flash strikes without any prior intimation, causing trouble to public.

Taking a serious view of the strike called by certain unions, it said the workers should get back to work or "face consequences", including termination and contempt of court.

The bench, hearing of a PIL seeking a direction to the state government to end the strike by holding talks, said it was the duty of the state to ensure and protect rights of its citizens during such circumstances.

It ordered notices to the trade unions and posted the PIL to January 8 for further hearing.

Hours later, state Transport Minister M R Vijayabaskar issued the ultimatum to the employees to resume work or face action and reiterated that the present wage agreement was 'unprecedented' in many aspects.

"I request the employees and trade unions who are involved in this unnecessary strike to realise the factual situation and get back to work as per the court directive," he said.

Reading out a statement before reporters here, he said the government had proposed a "very good" wage revision agreement despite financial issues faced by the transport corporations.

"If (the transport staff) continue with the protest and cause trouble to people, the government will not hesitate to take action as per law against them," he added.

He also said that instances of striking employees 'intimidating' others who wanted to work had been reported.

General Secretary of DMK-backed LPF, M Shanmugam, said they were not worried about action from the government since any protest would attract action.

CITU leader A Soundarrajan said he felt the court had not heard their side and that the unions will put forth their views on Monday before the bench.

Asked if the strike will then continue till Monday, Shanmugam shot back saying "it will continue. It will continue till our problems end."

He also said they have not received any communication from the court about ending their strike.

Responding to the government warning of action, Sounderrajan said it did not befit the former and insisted that it should opt for talks to end the stalemate.

He expressed regret over the hardship being caused to people in the wake of the strike.

Earlier, Chief Minister K Palaniswami chaired a meeting of ministers and senior officials to take stock of the situation, even as opposition parties including the DMK and the Left, besides actor Kamal Haasan, urged the government to end the stalemate by holding talks with trade unions.

Sounderrajan, who participated in talks with government yesterday, today claimed that "not even 10 per cent" of buses were being operated across the state.

Further, seven unions joined the strike today, taking the number to 17, he told reporters here.

Ten unions had announced launching the strike yesterday after collapse of talks on wage revision.

The striking unions wanted the 'factor' for revision to be fixed at 2.57 times while government insisted it be 2.44.

Officials said buses were being run by utilising services of workers affiliated to ruling AIADMK-backed union ATP.

However, reports received here said a large number of vehicles were off the road in different parts of the state like Chennai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Madurai.

The government has invited those possessing valid driving licences to approach local bus depots to be used as substitute drivers. Besides, private buses were also roped in to meet the situation at several places.

Police have been posted at bus depots to prevent any untoward incidents.

Following the strike, commuters alleged over-charging by autos and private buses even as scores opted for suburban rail services in Chennai.

On Visiting Andhiyur, seeing the plight of passengers waiting for buses, Raja Krishnan himself decided to operate a bus.

Salem: Unmindful of consequences, an AIADMK MLA representing Andhiyur in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Mr. Raja Krishnan, braved to take to the wheels of a State Transport Corporation (STC) bus and jolly well drove it from Andhiyur to Bhavani on Friday, after STC workers struck work in response to the trade unions call for an indefinite strike over wage revision and other issues.

Raja Krishnan surprised everyone to take the driver's seat, like duck to water even as a group of striking transport workers of the DMK-affiliated LPF sat on a 'dharna' near the Andhiyur bus stand, protesting against the MLA's anti-workers' decision. Over 20 workers blocked the road, creating tension in the area, and one of them even prostrated on the road.

However, police rushed to the spot to clear the road and the AIADMK MLA continued his journey, steering the STC bus for full 18-km, up to Bhavani in Erode district. On Visiting Andhiyur, seeing the plight of passengers waiting for buses, Raja Krishnan himself decided to operate a bus.

In the western districts of Salem, Namakkal and Erode, 50 per cent of the TNSTC buses were not operated on Friday following the strike call by the Transport Unions. Salem district collector, Ms. Rohini R. Bhajibhakare swung into action, visiting bus depots, inspecting them and instructed Transport officials to ensure passengers were not fleeced by private bus operators today.

Puducherry: A Puducherry government official faces disciplinary action for having met the Lt Governor to address his grievance. Lt Governor Kiran Bedi in a WhatsApp message alleged that a senior government official who met her in open sessions months ago sharing his experience on how he was being held back of his promotion was served with a showcause notice of disciplinary action for having met the Lt Governor.

“Truly saddened to share with one particular case of a senior officer when he came to greet me for the new year today, I recalled he had met me at the open house session many months ago and shared with me how he was being held back of his promotion “, said the Lt Governor. She said the official was referred to the appropriate officer to hear and redress his grievance.

The Lt Governor alleged that instead of hearing his grievance, the concerned officer directed that this officer be served a show cause notice of disciplinary action for having met the Lt Governor.

“Accordingly the next in line officer blindly obeyed his senior and served a memo to the petitioner under his own signatures,” said Ms Bedi

“All officers of the administration fell in line. The case of the officer was so clear. I have seen the papers only now as this aggrieved officer never came back to me to tell me of the consequences of coming to me. Or else I could have called for the file to see for myself,” she added.

The Lt Governor said that the officer was hesitant to share his experience with her as he was afraid of another disciplinary action.

Calling the incident painful the Lt Governor reminded the officials that one is a coward when one does not stand up for what is right when it is a situation to be not a part of a most evident wrong.

Tribunal finds bus driver who rammed into bike responsible.



Chennai: The Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal, Chennai, has awarded a compensation of Rs 23 lakh to family members of a 30-year-old electrician killed in a road accident four years ago. A Tamil Nadu corporation bus rammed into the two-wheeler, in which he was travelling on East Coast Road.

In the petition, Mymun Beevi of Perumbakkam submitted that her husband Raghamathullah, 30, was working as an electrician cum mason and earning Rs 15,000 per month. On July 17, 2014, at about 5.15 pm when Raghamathullah was riding his motorcycle on East Coast Road, Kanathur, a TNSTC bus, driven by its driver in a rash and negligent manner, hit the bike and the biker sustained grievous injuries. Immediately, he was rushed to a private hospital and later shifted to the RGGGH where he died the next day.

Mymun Beevi said the family members, comprising their two minor sons, his mother and father, depended on the income of Raghamathullah.

The bus driver was responsible for the accident and police also registered a case against him. Hence, managing director, TNSTC, Villupuram division, is liable to pay a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to his family members.

In its reply, the MD, TNSTC, Villupuram, stated that the bus driver was not driving the vehicle in a rash and negligent manner at the time of the accident. While passing a police barricade the two-wheeler driver rammed into the bus. The accident occurred due to the rash and negligent act of bike rider. The two-wheeler owner and the insurance company of the motorcycle were not included as respondents in the matter. The bike rider was not having a valid driving license on the date of the accident. Hence, the TNSTC was not liable to pay any compensation.

Holding the bus driver responsible for the accident the Small Causes Court-VI has directed the TNSTC to pay a compensation of Rs 23.82 lakh to the Raghamathullah’s family members.

மூடநம்பிக்கை... மூடநம்பிக்கை என்கிறோமே அதன் எல்லை தான் எது? வெறும் சம்பிரதாயங்கள் மூடநம்பிக்கையில் சேர்த்தி இல்லையா? இன்னும் சிலர் செய்வினை என்கிறார்கள்... அட நமக்குத் தெரியாத செய்வினை, செயப்பாட்டு வினையா என்ன? அதெல்லாம் தெரியும் போங்கடா சாமிகளா! என்று அதை புறம் தள்ளவே பெரும் தைரியம் வேண்டியிருக்கிறது, இதில் எங்கிருந்து அதெல்லாம் சுத்த ஹம்பக் என்று ஒதுக்கித் தள்ள!

மனித இனம் தோன்றிய நாள் முதற்கொண்டே இதெல்லாம் தொடர்ந்து கொண்டே தான் இருந்திருக்கக் கூடும்?! வெவ்வேறு ரூபங்களிலும் வேறு, வேறு நம்பிக்கைகளிலும், இதில் வாஸ்து வேறு சேர்ந்து கொள்ள அதற்கென்று கருத்து யுத்தம் நடத்தி பார்க்கும் வரையில் மட்டுமே இன்று நாம் முன்னேறி இருக்கிறோம், சிலர் வலுக்கட்டாயாமாகவேனும் சில மூட நம்பிக்கைகளை அறவே ஒதுக்கித் தள்ளத் தான் பார்க்கிறார்கள், அவர்களின் பிரயத்தனம் விழலுக்கு இறைத்த நீராய் வீட்டிலுள்ள மனைவி, மக்கள், மற்றுமுள்ள இன்னோரன்ன சொந்த பந்தங்களால் மீறப்பட்டுக் கொண்டே தான் இருக்கிறது .

கடந்த மாதம் நண்பர் ஒருவர் புது வீடு வாங்கி கிரகப்பிரவேசம் செய்தார். கிட்டத் தட்ட ஐம்பது லகரத்தை தொடக் கூடிய அளவில் நவீன வசதிகள் கொண்ட அல்ட்ரா மாடர்ன் ஃபிளாட். இரண்டே இரண்டு சயன அறைகள், சின்னதாக கைக்கு அடக்கமான ஒரு சமையலறை, கொஞ்சம் பரவாயில்லை எனும்படியான இடவசதியோடு இரண்டு குளியல் அறைகள், படுக்கை அறையை விட கொஞ்சமே கொஞ்சம் பெரிய அளவில் ஒரு ஹால் இவ்வளவு தான். சின்னதோ பெரியதோ சென்னையில் சொந்த வீடு என்பது சாமான்யர்களுக்குச் சாமான்ய காரியமில்லையே! அப்படிப் பார்த்தால் நண்பர் அதிர்ஷ்டசாலி என்றே சொல்லலாம் என்றார்கள் அக்கம்பக்கத்தினர்.

இங்கே நாம் குறித்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டிய முக்கியமான மற்றொரு விஷயம் ‘அதிர்ஷ்டத்தின்’ மீதான நமது அர்த்தமற்ற நம்பிக்கைகள். நண்பரது விஷயத்தில் அவர் வீடு வாங்கியது அவரது கடின உழைப்பின் பலன் என்று தானே கூற வேண்டும். அதை விடுத்து... எல்லாம் அவரது அதிர்ஷ்டம் என்றால் அதுவும் ஒருவகையில் மூடநம்பிக்கையில் சேர்த்தியா இல்லையா? இதையெல்லாம் நாம் ஏன் எப்போதும் புரிந்து கொள்ள முயற்சிப்பதே இல்லை.

ஒரு வீட்டில் குடி இருக்கிறோம், விரும்பத் தகாத நிகழ்வுகள் ஏதேனும் அந்த வீட்டில் நாம் குடி இருக்கையில் நிகழ்ந்தால் அது மனிதச் செயல் அல்லவென்றே நம்பத் தொடங்குகிறோம். உடனே வீடு ராசி இல்லை... வாஸ்து சரி இல்லை... இதெல்லாம் தான் அதற்குக் காரணம் என்று சொல்லிக் கொள்கிறோம். எனில், அப்படியா? அது தான் விரும்பத்தகாத காரியங்கள் நடப்பதற்கான காரணமா?

வீடென்பது வாய் பேசாப்பொருள்... என்னதான் உயிர்ப்புடன் இருப்பதாக நாம் நம்பினாலும் மனிதர்கள் இருக்கும் வரை மட்டுமே அதற்கு உயிர்ப்பு உண்டே தவிர, யாருமற்றுக் கைவிடப்படுகையில் அவை வெறும் ஜடப்பொருட்களே! சொல்லப் போனால் வீட்டைக் குறித்து நாம் தான் நமது ஞாபகங்களை வளர்த்துக் கொண்டு என் வீடு... என் தோட்டம்... என் சமையல் அறை, என் படுக்கை அறை என்றெல்லாம் பேசிப்பேசி மாய்ந்து போகிறோமே தவிர; வீடு எப்போதேனும் பேசி இருக்கக் கூடுமோ? ‘என்னுள் குடி இருக்கும் மனிதர்களை எனக்குப் பிடித்தம் இல்லை, இதோ இன்று அவர்கள் பயணம் செய்கையில் வண்டியில் இருந்து அவர்களைப் பிடித்து கீழே தள்ளி விடப் போகிறேன், அதில் தப்பி விட்டானா, சரி அடுத்த இலக்கு அவர்களது மகனோ மகளோ பள்ளி இறுதி தேர்வு எழுதப் போகிறார்களா நல்ல சான்ஸ் அவர்களை என் ராசியைக் கொண்டு ஃபெயில் ஆக்குகிறேன் பார்!’ என்று வீடு சங்கல்பம் ஏதும் செய்து கொள்ளக் கூடுமா?!

இந்த ராசி சென்டிமென்ட் மனிதர்களின் பிரத்யேகக் கண்டுபிடிப்பேயன்றி வீடென்ன செய்யக் கூடும்?! புரியத்தான் இல்லை .

செவ்வாய், வெள்ளிக்கிழமைகளில் கண்ணேறு (திருஷ்டி) கழிக்கிறோம் என்று காய்ந்த மிளகாய் வற்றல்களை அடுப்பிலிட்டு மொத்தக்குடும்பத்தினரையும் மூக்கில் கார நெடியேற்று இருமச் செய்து தெருமுக்குகள் தோறும் கொட்டி வைக்கிறோம். அல்லது அமாவாசை... பௌர்ணமிகளில் மொத்தமாக திருஷ்டிப் பூசணிக்காய் உடைப்பது எனத் தொடங்கி எல்லாக் கடை வாசல்களிலும் பூசணிக்காய்களை பலி கொடுக்கிறோம். அகஸ்மாத்தாக வாகனஓட்டிகள் யாரேனும் கவனிக்காமல் அதன் மேல் தங்கள் இருசக்கர வாகனங்களை ஏற்றித் தொலைத்தால் அவர்களது மண்டைகளும் தான் தான் சில நேரங்களில் பலி பொருட்களாகின்றன. இதற்கென்ன சொல்ல? ஒருவருக்கு நன்மை தரக்கூடும் எனும் நம்பிக்கையில் செய்யப்படும் நமது சடங்கு சம்பிரதாயங்கள் கடைசியில் அடுத்தவருக்கு கெடுதல் இழைப்பதில் முடிவதைப் பற்றி நாம் ஏன் யோசிப்பதே இல்லை.

மற்றொரு உதாரண சம்பவத்தைப் பாருங்கள், ஒரு மாமி தன் பெண்ணின் திருமணத்தை முன்னிட்டு தன் வீட்டை ஒட்டி இருந்த அவரது காலி மனையை விற்று விட்டார், அதை விலைக்கு வாங்கியவர் அங்கே அடுக்கு மாடி வீடு கட்டி வாடகைக்கு விட்டு நல்ல வருமானம் பார்க்க ஆரம்பித்தார், அப்போது மாமிக்கு ஏற்பட்ட மன வருத்தத்தை சொல்லி மாளாது, இதற்குள் எந்த கடமைக்காக மனையை விற்றாரோ அந்தப் பெண்ணும் கணவன் சரியில்லை என்று வாழவெட்டியாக பிறந்தகம் வந்து விடவே நிலைமை... மாமியின் வயிற்றெரிச்சலை சொல்லில் விளக்கி விட இயலாமல் ஆனது.

தன் கண்முன்னே தனது காலி மனை அடுக்குமாடி வீடாக மாறி அங்கே கலகலவென்று மனிதர்கள் புழங்குவதைக் கண்டு மாமி புழுங்கித் தவித்தார்... ஐயோ இடம் போச்சே... போச்சே என்று மாமி இப்படிப் புலம்புவதைக் காதால் கேட்ட சிலர் தங்களுக்குத் தெரிந்த கதைகளை இட்டுக் கட்ட சமயம் பார்த்தனர்.

காக்காய் உட்காரப் பனம் பழம் விழுந்த கதை போல, புதிதாகக் கட்டப்பட்ட அடுக்கு மாடி வீட்டில் குடி இருந்த ஒரு குடித்தனக்காரருக்கு எதிர்பாராமல் தொழிலில் நஷ்டம் வர அவர் தொழிலை ஏறக்கட்டி விட்டு விற்றது போக மிச்சம் மீதி இருந்த பணத்தில் எளிமையாக ஒரு வீட்டை வாங்கிக் கொண்டு வாடகை வீட்டைக் காலி செய்து விட்டுப் போய் விட்டார்.

அடுத்து அந்த வீட்டுக்கு குடி வந்த குடும்பத்தில், வயது முதிர்ந்த பெரியவர் ஒருவர் எண்பது வயதிலும் ஆரோக்கியமாக இருந்தவர் இந்த வீட்டுக்கு வந்ததும் சில மாதங்களில் உடல் நலக் குறைவால் இறந்தார். இதையும் முன்னதையும் சம்பந்தப்படுத்திப் பேச நல்ல சந்தர்ப்பம் அமையவே பேசும் நாக்குகள் வேலையை ஆரம்பித்தன.

முதலில் அந்த வீடு ‘ராசி இல்லாத வீடு’ ஆனது.

‘மாமி வயித்தெரிச்சல் தான் அங்க குடி இருக்கறவங்களை இந்தப் பாடுபடுத்துது.’

‘வேற வீடே இல்லையா என்ன?!’

‘இந்த வீட்டுக்குப் போய் குடி போகனுமா?!’

‘அதென்னவோ முந்தியெல்லாம் காட இருந்த இடம் தானே இதெல்லாம்! அங்க காத்து கருப்பு நடமாட்டம் இருந்துச்சோ என்னவோ? இல்லனா குடி இருக்கறவங்களை இப்படியெல்லாம் கஷ்டப்படுத்தக் கூடுமா? என்னவோ இருக்கு அந்த இடத்துல?!’

‘அந்த இடத்தை வித்துத்தான் மாமி தம் பொண்ணுக்கு கல்யாணம் பண்ணி வச்சா... என்ன ஆச்சு சுவத்துல அடிச்சா பந்தாட்டம் மறு மாசமே பொண்ணு திரும்பி வந்துட்டா... என்னமோ இருக்குடீ அங்க...

அம்புட்டுத் தான்... கதை முடிஞ்சது. வீடு ராசி இல்லாத வீடே தான் என அழுத்தமாக முத்திரை குத்தப்பட்டு விட்டது. .

இதில் குறிப்பிடத் தகுந்த சங்கதி ஒன்றை கட்டாயம் சொல்லித்தான் ஆக வேண்டும், மனையை விற்ற மாமிக்கு விற்றதில் ஒன்றும் நஷ்டம் இல்லை, நல்ல விலைக்கு விற்றுத்தான் பணம் வாங்கிக் கொண்டார். விலைக்கு வாங்கியவருக்கும் நஷ்டமே இல்லை. கட்டிய வீட்டை வாடகைக்கு விட்டு நல்ல லாபம் பார்க்கிறார் அவரும். குடி இருப்பவர்களை மட்டும் வீட்டு ராசி பாடாய்ப் படுத்துகிறதாம்.
‘என்னய்யா கொடுமை இதென்றால்?!’

‘கொடுத்தவங்களும் வாங்கினவங்களும் அந்த இடத்துல குடி இருக்கலை இல்ல? அந்த இடத்தை அனுபவிக்கிறவங்களுக்குத் தானே அதோட பலன். அப்படிப் பார்த்தா குடி இருக்கிறவங்களைத் தானேப்பா பாதிக்கும்!’

இதைப் படிப்பவர்கள் யாரேனும்... இப்போதேனும் சொல்லுங்கள் மூடநம்பிக்கை... மூட நம்பிக்கை என்கிறோமே அதன் எல்லை தான் எது?!’

திருப்பதியில் பக்தர்கள் அவதி

திருப்பதி:தமிழகத்தில், போக்குவரத்து தொழிலாளர்கள் தங்களின் பல்வேறு கோரிக்கைகளை வலியுறுத்தி, நேற்று முன்தினம் முதல், போராட்டத்தில் ஈடுபட்டு வருகின்றனர்.
திருப்பதியிலிருந்தும் தமிழக அரசு பஸ்கள் எதுவும் இயக்கப்படவில்லை. அதனால், தமிழகத்தின் பல்வேறு ஊர்களுக்கு பயணம் செய்ய முடியாமல், பக்தர்கள் திருப்பதி பேருந்து நிலையத்தில், பல மணி நேரம் காத்திருந்தனர். 

திருப்பதியிலிருந்து, ஆந்திர, ஆர்.டி.சி., பஸ்கள் மட்டுமே இயக்கப்பட்டதால், அதில் மட்டுமே, பக்தர்கள் பயணம் செய்கின்றனர்.
