Kerala: A 35-year-old orthopedic surgeon and the owner of Anoop Ortho Centre in Kollam, allegedly took the extreme step of taking his life by hanging himself after cutting a nerve in his arm. The doctor who deeply disturbed by the death of a 7-year-old patient whom he had operated upon and the following social media trial that blamed him for the death of the child. 

Dr Anoop Krishna was a well known orthopedic surgeon in the area with a specialization in Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty. He took up a case of a 7 year old patient last week. During the operation, the patient suffered a complication post-anesthesia and went into cardiac arrest. Despite all the attempts to save her including taking her to another hospital, the child passed away. 

The kin of the patient, alleging medical negligence, filed a complaint with the local police and also took to social media blaming the doctor for their child's demise. A case was registered against the doctor, who was also deeply disturbed with the online backlash and the blame game he was facing on social media on account of the child's death. Unfortunately, unable to take the pressure, the doctor chose to end his life 

According to the police account, the doctor first went to the bathroom and cut his veins. "He wrote something on the wall relating to his suicide which is not legible since it was written with blood. He then went to his bedroom and hanged himself using a bedsheet," the police officer told Mirror. The News Minute adds, that the doctor wrote the word sorry on the wall . Deeply saddened and disturbed with the death of the doctor, the medical fraternity has now also taken to social media to express their sorrow and anger over the incident

The special judge for CBI cases, Chennai, on Tuesday sentenced R Kannan, former chief manager of Union Bank of India’s Anna Salai branch, to undergo three years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of ₹2 lakh in a bank fraud case.

The other accused in the fraud involving National Medicines Private Ltd was Parvathi Ramakrishnan, former manager of Standard Chartered Bank in Chennai, who was sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of ₹1 lakh. Anurag Jain, former director of National Medicines Private Limited, was sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of ₹4 lakh and another former director of the firm, K Manjula, was sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment with ₹1lakh fire. The CBI registered the case on allegations that between 2006 and 2007, the directors of the city firm conspired with Kannan and Parvathi with an intention to cheat Union Bank of India. The bank suffered a loss of ₹6.2 crore.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi and general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida on Thursday when they, along with hundreds of Congress workers, were going to Hathras to meet the family members of the gang-rape victim.

They were taken to the guest house of the Buddha International Circuit for violating Section 144 and later released on personal bonds.

Mr. Gandhi said he agreed to go alone if his visit violated Section 144. “But still they didn’t allow me and we were pushed around,” he said. When Mr. Gandhi started walking on foot, he was stopped by the Gautam Buddh Nagar police. In the pushing and shoving that ensued, Mr. Gandhi fell down and sustained bruises on his arm.

“Just now the police pushed me, lathi charged me and threw me to the ground. I want to ask if only the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) and RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) can walk in this country? Can’t a normal person walk? Can only Modiji [Prime Minister Narendra Modi] walk in this country? Can’t a normal person walk?” Mr. Gandhi said.

After that, he sat down on a dharnaon the Expressway.

Ajay Kumar Lallu, president of the State unit of the party, who continued the sit-in with party workers after the Gandhis were taken away by the police, was also detained.

Reacting to the police action, Ms. Vadra told mediapersons that the government was insensitive and did not follow the rule of law. “The government has to take responsibility for the protection of women. You would remember that last year around this time, we were protesting against the Unnao rape victim,” she said.

She further said, “[The government] portrays itself as the saviour of Hindusim but what kind of religion is this that could not allow a father to perform the last rites of his daughter?”

Love Kumar, Additional Commissioner (Law and Order), Gautam Buddh Nagar, first told The Hindu that the Congress leaders had been detained but later in the day clarified that technically it was an arrest for violating Section 144. “They were released after signing personal bonds. No witnesses were called for bail. So practically, it was detention,” he said.

The Allahabad High Court (HC) on Thursday took suo motu cognisance of the Hathras incident and the events leading up to the cremation of the victim in the alleged rape and murder case and issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh government.

“The incidents which took place after the death of the victim on 29.09.2020 leading up to her cremation, as alleged, have shocked our conscience, therefore, we are taking suo moto cognizance of the same,” the Lucknow Bench said.

‘Immense importance’

Justices Rajan Roy and Jaspreet Singh said the matter was of “immense public importance and public interest as it involves allegation of high handedness by the State authorities resulting in violation of the basic human and fundamental rights not only of the deceased victim but also of her family members”.

The court directed the Senior Registrar to register a suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) with the title, “In Re : Right to decent and dignified last rites/cremation”.

The court listed the case for October 12.

JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (JSSAHER), which has already begun phase three of the clinical trials for vaccine candidate Covishield at its facility in Mysuru, has been approached for human trials of Novavax, another COVID-19 vaccine candidate developed by a U.S.-based company, as well as Russia’s Sputnik V.

JSSAHER Pro-Chancellor B. Suresh said the institution had consented to carrying out trials for Novavax while the request on Sputnik V had been kept in abeyance.

Novavax, the U.S.-based biotechnology company, has entered into a manufacturing pact with the Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII). “Novavax approached us through SII, and we consented to it. We will be submitting the required documents shortly,” he said.

Though the institution was also approached for the human trials of Sputnik V, which has tied up with the Hyderabad-based Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Dr. Suresh said JSSAHER was still studying the proposal.

Apart from carrying out clinical studies for Covishield, the vaccine candidate developed by Oxford University and multi-national pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, JSSAHER has taken up human trials to study the efficacy of BCG, the anti-tuberculosis vaccine, against COVID-19. Dr. Suresh said a lot of interest had been generated for trials in India because of its huge capacity for making drugs.

Joining the citizens’ protest related to the Hathras rape case at Jantar Mantar on Friday, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal appealed to UP government to ensure the strictest punishment for the culprits, saying they should be hanged. Several Aam Aadmi Party functionaries were also present at the protest.

“We are in a deep pit,” began Kejriwal, addressing the protesters. “The FIR for rape was not lodged for many days, no proper treatment was given to the victim, and her body was cremated at night against Hindu customs. Several actions like these have pushed people into believing that the incident is being brushed aside and the culprits are being shielded.”

The CM continued, “The whole country would like to appeal to UP government to hand out stringent punishment to the culprits. Hang them till death. They should be given the harshest punishment so that nobody tries to repeat such an act.”

Describing the treatment meted to the family as wrong, Kejriwal said at this point, all the family needed was peace and the freedom to meet whoever they wanted to. “There should be no politics on the matter,” he said. “It is not ethical to play politics around a case like this. When one says a rape has happened in UP, another person says a rape has also happened in Rajasthan. This is no argument. Why should such incidents of rape happen in UP or Rajasthan? Why should they happen in Madhya Pradesh, Mumbai and Delhi? Whether they belong to Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata or Bengaluru, they are our daughters. There shouldn’t be any case of rape anywhere in the country.”

The AAP national convenor added, “All of us, all the governments, political parties and people of the country, must create a system that keeps our daughters safe. There should be no politics at all on such a heinous matter.”

AAP spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj claimed that the reason behind the outrage in the Hathras rape case was because “every officer of the administration, whether the station house officer, district magistrate, DSP, ADG or UP chief minister, everybody is trying to save the accused right from the day of the incident on September 14 till today.” The girl’s body was cremated without the consent of her family to erase any evidence, Bharadwaj alleged.

Minister Rajendra Pal Gautam, MLAs Atishi Marlena, Dilip Pandey, Akhilesh Pati Tripathi, Rakhi Birla, Somnath Bharti, Rajesh Gupta, Madan Lal, Vishesh Ravi and several others were also present at the protest.
