After suicides, college pushes teacher-student interaction

TNN | Updated: Nov 2, 2017, 11:33 IST

CHENNAI: The recent suicides of two MBBS students of the prestigious Madras Medical College has brought into the spotlight a growing trend: medicos are stressed and they need help.

In an effort to ease the pressure, MMC's administration has asked lecturers to dedicate 10 minutes of their hour-long sessions to inviting feedback from students and addressing their concerns - academic or personal. "Each classroom has 125 students. Lecturers barely have the time to interact with students beyond what they teach. This will have to change," said MMC dean Dr Narayana Babu. On Tuesday, he held a meeting with the heads of all the departments and issued a series of directives to reduce stress levels among students.

Each lecturer will now be assigned seven students to mentor. "The mentors will also mediate between the students and the administration, and hold meetings every fortnight," said the dean. In addition, two counsellors from the Institute of Mental Health, Kilpauk, will visit the campus twice a week to interact with students. "We have asked the faculty and the hostel warden to recognize signs of depression and refer the students to the counsellors," said Dr Narayana Babu. At present, MMC - one of the oldest education institutions in the city -- has only one student counsellor for nearly 1,000 undergraduates.

On Sunday night M Arun Selva, a second year student in MMC hanged himself in his hostel room. Two weeks prior to his death, P Soujanya, another second year student, had committed suicide. Both of them had shown signs of depression.

It isn't just students in government medical colleges who are struggling to cope with academic pressure coupled with the strain of meeting their families' expectation. A study published last week in the Indian Journal of Community Medicine revealed high stress levels among 750 undergraduates in a private medical college in Chennai. Researchers found that final-year students were psychologically disturbed the most. The most cited reason: vastness of curriculum and fear of failure.

Acknowledging the trend, Director of Medical Education Dr Edwin Joe said students struggled the most in the first and final years. "We've seen state toppers failing in the first year as they are unable to cope. Many of them are used rote learning," he said. Colleges, he said, have been instructed to factor in the students' psychological well-being by including more extracurricular. "We have also directed the psychiatry departments of medical colleges hold group counselling sessions regularly for students and parents," he added.

Students, however, say most of these measures taken by the administration of medical colleges are largely perfunctory. "Most of our classes are impersonal. The lecturers don't even know many of us by name," said a third year student in MMC. "It's a factory of clinicians."

Dr Lakshmi Vijayakumar, founder-psychiatrist of Chennai-based anti-suicide helpline Sneha, said they receive calls from two groups of medical students seeking help: "A section of students who have been pushed into medicine against their will, and another who don't know how to handle failure," she said. Dr Vijayakumar said the administration needs to take three immediate steps to help students. "They have to acknowledge there has been a death instead of being in denial; find the complexities of the reasons behind the death and then enabling children to talk about what has happened," she said.

The Tamil Nadu State disaster management authority has advised citizens to stay indoors.

CHENNAI: The city received its heaviest spell of rain since the 2015 floods on Thursday evening. Weather blogger Pradeep John has predicted another spell of rain to hit the city within hours. The incoming spell of rain is going to be very intense, John said.

There was waterlogging in several areas and public transport was hit. Several commuters were stranded on the roads as rains led to traffic chaos.

So far the city has received 13.6cm of rainfall since evening. The Tamil Nadu state disaster management authority advised residents of Chennai to stay indoors.

The administration has ordered schools to remain closed on Friday.

Earlier today, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami appointed ministers to oversee rain relief work here and in neighbouring Kancheepuram.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has advised people living in lower areas to move to higher ground where people and animals can take shelter. People have been advised to avoid entering flood waters and if need be, use footwear. "Stay away from sewerage lines, gutters, drains, culverts, etc," NDMA tweeted.

Within a couple of hours on Thursday evening, several parts of the city including Nungambakkam, Saidapet, Neelankarai, Mogappair, Chromepet and Velachery received about more than 10cm rainfall. Northern parts of the city received relatively lesser rainfall. Weathermen have predicted more rain until the weekend.

Several arterial roads witnessed heavy traffic from 8pm, leaving commuters stranded.

Area cyclone warning centre director S Balachandran said, "A low pressure area has formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka. This will bring heavy rainfall in the some of the southern and delta districts on Friday. Chennai will get one or two spells of light showers."

Southern and delta districts received heavy showers during the 24 hours from 8.30am on Wednesday to 8.30am on Thursday. Palayamkottai (Tirunelveli district) received 13cm rainfall, Tiruchendur (Toothukudi district) 9cm, Chidambaram AWS (Cuddalore district), Kelambakkam (Kancheepuram district) and Srivaikuntam (Toothukudi district) received 8cm each, Nagapattinam (Nagapattinam district), Cheranmahadevi (Tirunelveli district) and Vedaranyam (Nagapattinam district) received 7cm each.

Since October, the city has recorded excess rainfall at Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam. In the 14 hours until 10.30pm on Thursday, the city recorded 12cm rainfall at Nungambakkam. Ennore recorded 3cm rainfall, Madhavaram 2.5cm and Meenambakkam 9cm.

All physical contact not harassment: Delhi HC

The HC said there should be context while defining a physical contact as sexual in nature.
Plainly, a mere accidental physical contact, even though unwelcome, would not amount to sexual harassment, the court said.

NEW DELHI: Unwelcome or accidental physical contact without undertones of a sexual nature doesn't amount to sexual harassment, the Delhi high court has ruled.

Upholding the clean chit given to a former CRRI scientist with regard to a complaint of an ex-colleague against him, the HC said there should be context while defining a physical contact as sexual in nature. The woman scientist had challenged the clean chit given by the CRRI internal complaints panel to her colleague, whom she had accused of sexual harassment. Undoubtedly, physical contact or advances would constitute sexual harassment provided such physical contact is a part of the sexually determined behaviour. Such physical contact must be in the context of a behaviour which is sexually oriented. Plainly, a mere accidental physical contact, even though unwelcome, would not amount to sexual harassment. Similarly, a physical contact which has no undertone of a sexual nature and is not occasioned by the gender of the complainant may not necessarily amount to sexual harassment," Justice Vibhu Bakhru noted.

Both the scientists were working in the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) .

In her complaint, the woman had referred to an incident of April 2005 when the man entered the laboratory where she was working, grabbed her arm, snatched the samples from her hand and threw them on the floor. He also pushed her out of the room. She maintained that this was an unwelcome physical contact that would amount to sexual harassment.

But the internal complaints committee concluded that "it was a case of altercation in the background of the uncongenial environment prevailing in the division."

The committee also held that though it was deplorable the way male scientist held her arm and threw the material in her hand in a fit of anger, the same "would not qualify as a sexual harassment."

HC saw substance in the stand of the committee and agreed that "all physical contact cannot be termed as sexual harassment and only a physical contact or advances which are in the nature of an "unwelcome sexually determined behaviour" would amount to sexual harassment."

Justice Bakhru also rejected the woman's second ground of appeal where she had challenged the constitution of the committee and the disciplinary authority, saying that it finds no infirmity in their set up.

19-year-old preparing for UPSC gang-raped in Bhopal for 3 hours

HIGHLIGHTS

The spot where she was raped has some of the busiest roads and rail tracks.
Thousands of cars drove past just 100 metres from where she was stripped, tied up and raped repeatedly.

The survivor shuttles between her hometown, about an hour’s journey from Bhopal, every day as she is preparing for the UPSC exams.

BHOPAL: For three hours, a 19-year-old college girl was tied up and raped by four men, who took breaks for tea and gutka before returning to assault her repeatedly under a bridge in the heart of Bhopal.

What happened after the rapists let her go was no less horrifying. Three police stations refused to take her complaint — although both her parents are in police — and a GRP officer mocked her for "coming with a filmy story".

The parents — her father is a sub inspector with a security force and mother with the CID — and the girl nabbed two of the suspects in a dramatic daylight scuffle on Wednesday. Only then was a complaint registered. An embarrassed police force suspended SI R N Tekam of MP Nagar police station on Thursday for not accepting her complaint.

The horrifying gang rape has shaken Bhopal, where people take pride in their city as one of the safest for women. The spot where she was raped has some of the busiest roads and rail tracks — the bustling Habibganj station is just 100 metres away, and an RPF post just 50m away. Thousands of cars drove past just 100 metres from where she was stripped, tied up and raped repeatedly. Yet, no one heard a thing.

The survivor shuttles between her hometown, about an hour's journey from Bhopal, every day as she is preparing for the UPSC exams.

On Tuesday evening, the complaint notes, after her coaching classes got over, she began her short walk along the tracks towards Habibganj station. Around 7pm, a man now identified as Golu Bihari Chadhar — out on bail after being charged in her infant daughter's murder — grabbed her by her hand. She kicked out and felled him. Angry, Golu called out to an accomplice, Amar Ghuntu, and the two of them started dragging her towards a nullah. The girl kept fighting and hit both of them with a stone.

Furious, they hit her with a stone as well, tied her up, and raped her. After around 15 minutes, Golu went to fetch gutka and cigarettes, the complaint notes, leaving Amar to watch over her. Amar and Golu are brothers-in-law and married to two sisters.

The girl asked for some clothes because hers had been torn to shreds. Golu went back and got some clothes, perhaps of his wife's — and also brought along two others to join in. She was raped again, this time Rajesh and Ramesh allegedly joining the other two. The horror went on till 10pm when the brothers-inlaw finally allowed her to dress and leave — but after she had handed over her earrings, watch and phone.

She somehow walked to the RPF outpost at Habibganj station and called her parents. Her father was already looking for her. Seeing how traumatised she was, he took her home. The next morning, the family went to MP Nagar to file a complaint. An SI went to check the spot and told them to go to Habibganj police station, staff from where redirected them to Habibganj GRP. It is at the third stop that an officer mocked the girl, saying she was "making up a filmy story".

"While coming from Habibganj, my daughter saw two of the rapists loitering in front of Mansarowar Complex, which is around 500 metres from the spot of crime," said the mother. The cop parents and the feisty survivor chased down Amar and Golu and nabbed them. "We handed over the duo to GRP Habibganj," said the mother.

"It's one of the worst experiences of my life. If I, as a policewoman, have to face such problems in filing my daughter's gangrapecomplaint, I can't imagine what a common man goes through," said the mother. "SHO GRP Mohit Saxena and SI Uikey misbehaved with us and said they wouldn't file any case. SI Uikey alleged that we were making a 'false filmy complaint'," she added.

Water level of Pallavaram Big Lake & updates

Posted on : 02/Nov/2017 18:29:54

The Pallavaram big lake is a reservoir spread across 200 acres land area or 87.12 lakh sq. ft.

It is present in Pallavaram on the eastern part of Railway Track between Chrompet and Pallavaram.

The lake has got dried up and the industrial waste waters ejected out of leather factors in Chrompet and garbage dumped along the lake are to be rebuked for the same.

Lakshmi Nagar and Ganapathipuram are the areas lying close to the lake. These are used as burial site to perform funeral rituals.

The big lake, though ‘big’ in its name, does not contain any water in it.

There is a load linking Chrompet or Pallavaram and Thoraipakkam via the center of the lake. In a few areas of the lake, there are bore wells dug for draining water out of the lake for commercial water supply needs.
