After getting new management, Gian Sagar medical college approaches government for revival

CHANDIGARH: The financially-ailing Gian Sagar Educational and Charitable Trust, managing the Gian Sagar Medical College at Banur in Mohali district, has been taken over by the JSB Group along with its over Rs 200 crore liabilities to revive the institute.
Medical classes at the college, earlier owned by the family members of Nirmal Singh Bhangoo—main accused in Rs 45,000-crore Pearls group chit fund scam—were suspended in February last year after the trust faced serious financial crunch.

The NCR-based JSB group has now approached the Punjab government for re-issuance of the essentiality certificate that is required for setting up a medical college. The state government had, in May last year, withdrawn the earlier essentiality certificate.

Punjab medical education and research minister Brahm Mohindra told the TOI, “We are looking into the representation submitted by the new medical college management. We will issue the essentiality certificate only after being satisfied with fulfillment of all laid down criteria.” Before getting the government permission again to start its classes, the medical college will also have to undergo an inspection from the Medical Council of India (MCI), said the minister.

Speaking to the TOI, one of the new Trust members, Harnam Singh, said, “In the Trust deed signed on April 11, the JSB group—which is into automobile business—has taken over Rs 200 crore liabilities from the Bhangoo family.” He said the total pending salaries of about 500 teaching staff members, doctors, paramedical and other staff would be less than Rs 10 crore, and the new group is in the process of clearing those by June end. “We have till date disbursed around Rs 85 lakh pending salaries of four months to the other staff through demand draft, except for doctors,” he said, adding, Rs 1.15 crore had been deposited in the Punjab National Bank as a security deposit.

If the Punjab medical education and research department grants essentiality certificate to the new Trust, its earlier affiliations will remain intact. In case the management gets the required permissions from the MCI and other authorities in time, medical courses could be revived from the next academic session, said Harnam.

Dr A S Sekhon, dean of the institute, is among the old staff who has agreed to continue with the medical college after being taken over by the new group. He told TOI, “The new Trust members approached some of the old staff members, including me, and we said we are interested in revival of the medical institute.” He said the new management had also recently cleared the pending power bill amounting to Rs 98 lakh and has also applied for a new power connection.

Out of the total loss suffered by the medical college, around Rs 50 crore is on account of vandalization of the hospital building and theft of medical equipment, told Dr Sekhon.

Before the medical college closed its operations, it was imparting medical education to 500 MBBS students and 1,000 students of the dental, nursing and physiotherapy streams. The medical council of India (MCI) had in June last year permitted to shift medical students to other medical colleges in Punjab. The medical college also has around 600-bedded hospital with 10 super-specialty departments. Faculty members and other staff of the medical college, including the security, had intensified their protests in April last year over their wages, pending since October 2016.

Heavy rain in Salem

Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and winds lashed variuos parts of Salem and Namakkal districts for more than an hour on Friday evening. The sky remained overcast for a major part of the evening session.

The low lying areas of Kichipalayam and Pachapatti in the city were totally flooded. Low lying areas of Narayana nagar, Kurinji nagar, Collectorate, Hasthampatti, and Suramangalam too were inundated affecting the free flow of traffic.

Mettur and Mecheri too experienced heavy rain.

Tiruchengode town and its surrounding areas in Namakkal district experienced sharp showers accompanied by heavy winds. The taluk office road, and Sankagiri road in Tiruchengode town were flooded.

Salem city experienced a maximum rainfall of 73.8 mm in the last 24 hours that ended at 8 a.m. on Friday. The following is the rainfall recorded in other areas: Aanaimaduvu 37 mm; Vazhappadi 32.4; P. N. Palayam 28.8; Mettur 14.2; Kaadayampatti 13.4; Sankagiri 12.3; Yercaud 11.4; Omalour 9.4; Kariyakovil 5; Attur 4.6 and Edappadi 2.4 mm.

In Namakkal district, Rasipuram experienced a maximum rainfall of 47 mm followed by Paramathivelur 45.1; Puduchathiram 12; Tiruchengode 9; Mohanur 6; Mangalapuram and Sendhamangalam 5 mm each.

Medication should be adjusted to avoid complications, say doctors

Ramzan fast need not lead to breakdown of health for diabetics if blood sugar levels are maintained well and medications adjusted.

Diabetics are considered to be at risk of developing hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, dehydration and acute metabolic complications such as diabetic ketoacidosis while fasting. Patients should consult their diabetologists six weeks before the fasting period so that the medications could be adjusted to ensure safe fasting, said K.P. Dinakaran, consultant diabetologist, at Lifeline Institute of Minimal Access.

Patients developed cardiovascular episodes after fasting and subsequent celebrations. This could be avoided if some simple steps were followed.

Since Muslims shun water during the fast, which typically lasts 12 hours of day time, doctors advise patients to drink plenty of water and sugar-free beverages (2 to 2.5 litres) during the non-fasting hours. Their meal should include a liberal dose of fruits and vegetables.

The human body synthesises fat during the evenings. Hence taking fat-rich food at night for iftar and high protein food during the suhoor (pre-dawn meal), could check episodes of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia.

Delaying the morning food helped the body synthesise proteins and release energy slowly and thus balance sugar levels.

Light exercise

A. Ramanan, consultant diabetologist at Madras Medical Mission Hospital, said people having diabetes should be encouraged to do regular exercise during Ramadan.

“The physical exertions involved in Tarawih such as bowing, kneeling and rising, should be considered part of daily exercise,” he added.

CBI: Do not allow ‘delaying tactics’ of 2G accused

The Central Bureau of Investigation urged the Delhi high court on Friday not to allow the “delaying tactics” of the accused in the 2G spectrum case, stressing that the case was one that caused “monumental loss and shame to the nation”.

Challenging the acquittal of former telecom minister A Raja, member of Parliament K Kanimozhi and others, the agency opposed the plea of the accused seeking more time to file their response, saying they were employing “delaying tactics” to prolong proceedings.

Appearing for the agency, additional solicitor general Tushar Mehta argued before Justice S P Garg that given the evidence the accused should have been challenging the trial court order as convicts but it was unfortunate that they had been acquitted and the CBI had to file an appeal.

The high court has posted the CBI’s plea challenging their acquittal by a special court in the 2G spectrum case for August 2 while the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) plea has been fixed for August

6. During the hearing, lawyers for some of the accused in the case argued that a number of chargesheets had been filed in these cases and they should be heard separately. The CBI and ED had filed an appeal against the special court’s December 21, 2017 judgment in the case.

The HC had earlier issued notices to Raja, Kanimozhi and others on the CBI challenging their acquittal. A similar order was passed by Justice Garg on the ED plea challenging their acquittal in the money laundering case arising out of the 2G scam case.

The court had also allowed the ED’s interim plea to maintain status quo with regard to properties worth around ₹223 crore attached by the agency in the money laundering case.

A Gujarati heart is 10 years older than its physical age

Age is just a number, they say. But when it comes to the matters of heart, Gujaratis may want to sit up and take notice. A study on 2,500-odd healthy Gujaratis with no history of major illness has found that the average age of their hearts was a good 10 years older than their chronological age!

The study titled ‘Are Gujarati Asian Indians older for their vascular age as compared to their chronological age?’ carried out by cardiologists at UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology has revealed premature vascular ageing of blood vessels supplying blood to key organs including the heart. The study has been published in QJM, an international journal of medicine printed by the Oxford University Press.

Principal investigator of the study, Dr Kamal Sharma, an associate professor of cardiology at UN Mehta said the study calculated vascular age of 2,483 healthy people who opted for medical check-up to know their health status. “The vascular age of the heart was calculated using Framingham vascular age calculator evaluating major risk factors like blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking and obesity,” said Dr Sharma.

Other investigators are doctors S Sahoo, KH Shah, AK Patel, ND Jadhav, MM Parmar and KH Patel.

A study carried out among Europeans using Framingham calculator found that heart age of Caucasians almost matched their physical age. The need for local-variant of this study was triggered by a rise in patients in their 30s and 40s coming with severe heart diseases.

“Alarmingly, over the past few years, we found nearly 40% patients with heart disease episodes to be in their 30s and 40s. We wondered if the heart ageing was accelerated in Gujarati population and the study did confirm our worst fears,” says Dr Sharma. 

CBSE Class XII results to be out today at noon

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is all set to declare its Class XII results on Saturday at noon. The results will be available on www.cbse.examresults.net, cbseresults.nic and results.gov.in .

This year 11,86,306 students took the board exams at 4,138 centres in India and 71 centres across the world. The exams were held between March 5 and April 13. Only the economics test was rescheduled on April 25 after cancellation due to reports of question paper leak.

The results can be accessed online through IVR, SMS and school websites. Microsoft has

partnered with CBSE to display the results on www.bing-.com and starting this year, the company will also publish it on SMS Organizer.

The post-result counselling will begin from May 26 and continue till June 9 from 8am to 10pm on all days for students and parents to overcome common psychological problems and general queries related to results.
