CHENNAI: Now Chennai airport’s runway lights won’t black out due to power outage. The airport now has a power back-up facility for ground lighting system for runways and visual aid facilities, according to Chennai Airport director G Chandramouli.

Initially, the airport, the fourth busiest in the country, serving over 18 million passengers in 2017, was dependent only on generators, said Chandramouli.In case of a power outage, the airport would lose its runway lights - key visual systems used to guide aircraft on the ground or in the process of landing or taking off, virtually eliminating a critically important navigation system and thereby creating a safety concern.

The power back-up was introduced to ensure safe landing and take-off, the airport director said. Consul Neowatt, the Global Indian UPS company, has deployed two units of 200kVA Falcon family UPS systems in parallel redundant configuration to protect as well as provide power back up to the critical ground lighting system for runways and visual aid facilities.

“The cost for deploying the two units is close to Rs 60 lakh. They are of importance at airports where traffic is dense,” said the airport director.Consul Neowatt team of engineers and technical personnel worked closely with airport engineers to deliver a dependable power back-up solution.

Interestingly, this is the second airport ground lighting system (GLS) installation for Consul Neowatt in the last six months. The company has previously supported GLS at Mangalore airport apart from emergency lighting backup for multiple airport terminals across the country.

They allegedly assaulted a TNSTC bus crew

The Sivaganga district police have registered a first information report (FIR) against 10 police personnel attached to Manamadurai police station after the conductor of a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus lodged a complaint alleging police excesses during a flash strike by TNSTC staff on Friday.

Police said K. Kirubarani, a woman constable, lodged a complaint against conductor Muruganandam and driver Senthilkumar, alleging that they abused her while she was travelling in a TNSTC bus from Sivaganga to Manamadurai on Thursday night. Manamadurai police took the duo into custody and allegedly assaulted them.

Mr. Muruganandam, in his complaint, said he and the driver were asleep at SIPCOT bus depot after a day’s work when 10 policemen from Manamadurai police station took them to the police station where they were stripped and beaten. They were made to remain at the police station in their undergarments.

On being told about their detention, the depot manager and other employees visited the police station and secured their release on Thursday night after holding talks with the police.

Later, they were admitted to Sivaganga Government Medical College hospital, police said.

On learning about the incident on Friday morning, TNSTC employees resorted to a flash strike, stopping buses enroute at various points, demanding action against the police personnel. They ended the strike after senior police officials intervened and assured them of action against them.

An FIR was filed against unnamed 10 police personnel under Sections 147 (rioting) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of IPC.

Kirubarani, attached to the Thiruvadanai all women police station, in her complaint, had stated that the conductor demanded that she buy a ticket for travelling from Sivaganga to Manamadurai. After she purchased the ticket by paying Rs. 18, he abused her and accused the entire police personnel of travelling free in government buses.

‘Pay pension from date of application’

‘Disburse the amount within six weeks’

Pensionary benefits will accrue from the date of application, observed the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court while hearing a woman’s plea for pension.

Justice G. R. Swaminathan directed the Tamil Nadu Manual Workers’ Welfare Board to pay pension from the date of application and disburse the amount within six weeks. The petitioner, Gandhi from Madurai, said that she had applied for pensionary benefits under the Tamil Nadu Manual Workers’ Social Security Welfare Scheme in 2015. Her representation was accepted in 2017. However, the contention was whether the pension must be paid from the date of application or approval. The court directed the board to quantify the arrears from the date of application for payment.

Digitisation of Treasury records completed

Pensioners told to make use of‘Jeevan Praman’ scheme

The State Government as part of its project to digitise its financial and Treasury records and transactions will soon roll out the Integrated Financial and Human Resource Management System, said S. Jawahar, Principal Secretary, and Treasury and Accounts Commissioner, here on Friday.

Addressing a gathering of officers to be trained under the project in Coimbatore, he said the software would help prepare online salary list, access service records of all government employees at the click of a button and lead to automated treasury management.

The State Government had approved the project at Rs. 288.91 crore. The 29,000 ‘drawing and disbursing’ officers would be able to submit online salary list and other documents. The project would also pave the way for digitisation of the service records of over nine lakh employees.

In Coimbatore, the process of automating the work in 782 drawing and disbursing offices and 32,847 employees’ records was complete, he said.

He also urged pensioners to make use of the Central Government’s ‘Jeevan Praman’ scheme to submit online the digital life certificate. As of June 15, 31,169 of the 35,656 pensioners had submitted life certificates.

MTC cuts old bus routes to start new ones to suburbs

Parts of city have lost out in terms of services and frequency of buses

Struggling with the extra demand for buses to cater to the city’s expanded area, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) seems to have decided that the way out is to rob Peter to pay Paul.

Extended areas of the city, including Madipakkam, Keelkattalai, Sholinganallur, Muthapudupet in Avadi, Saligramam and Valasaravakkam have gained bus services, allegedly at the cost of buses that were operated within the city.

MTC has either started new routes linking suburbs or extended services from original destinations.

M. Ajay Kannan, a resident of Jones Road in Saidapet, said there was a visible reduction in the number of buses on route no. 5B (T. Nagar to Mylapore).

The 5B service is one of the oldest services being operated in the city, and the frequency has been reduced over time. The service connects several important commercial centres including Adyar and Mandaveli and there are very few buses running on this route.

Similarly, commuters also complain about the sudden drop in frequency of old bus routes such as 3A (Mandaveli to Broadway), 51H (Tambaram to Saidapet), 45A (Velachery to Ice House), 29N (Velachery to Perambur), and A51 (Tambaram West to Broadway).

Routes rationalised

A senior MTC official said while some of the bus routes had been renamed and extended, others had been reduced because of poor patronage and also because of the availability of alternative public transport services.

The official said to provide last link facilities to residents in the suburbs for using MRTS train services, a number of services including M1 (Thiruvanmiyur to Keelkattalai) and 61C (Muthapudupet to Avadi Bus Terminus) had been extended. Also, small buses have been introduced in Ullagaram and Puzhuthivakkam.

The number of MTC buses on route 61C has been increased as there was no public transport facility at all a few years ago though a large number of residential colonies had come up inside the Avadi Heavy Vehicles Factory.

SC to examine if students with low vision can take up MBBS

After paving the way for the colour blind to pursue medical studies, the Supreme Court on Friday decided to examine whether a student suffering from low vision could be allowed to get admission in a medical college.

Agreeing to hear the plea of an Ahmedabad-based student who appeared in NEET 2018 and got a rank of 419 in the physically handicapped category, a vacation bench of Justices U U Lalit and Deepak Gupta issued notice to the Centre and Medical Council of India. The petitioner Purswani Ashutosh moved the court after a government hospital refused to issue disability certificate to him which is needed for counselling for admission in a medical college.

The court, however, raised a question whether it was feasible to admit a student with low eyesight which is not curable. “As far as MBBS is concerned, we have to see, how much it is feasible and possible,” it said.
