New Delhi : Eight officials of the health ministry have been named in an FIR filed by the CBI in its investigation into alleged bribery for favourable assessment of medical colleges. These officials allegedly facilitated unauthorised access to, and unlawful duplication and dissemination of, confidential files and sensitive information pertaining to the regulatory status and internal processing of medical colleges within the ministry. Further, the CBI FIR filed on June 30 states, they have been involved in manipulating the statutory inspection process conducted by the National Medical Commission (NMC) by preemptively disclosing the inspection schedules and identities of the designated assessors to the concerned medical institutions, well in advance of the official communication. 

Inspection of medical colleges is undertaken by the NMC on a periodic basis to assess whether they meet the minimum essential standards specified by the UnderGraduate Medical Education Board or the Post-Graduate Medical Education Board, as the case may be. Inspections are also undertaken before allowing medical institutions to increase seats and start new courses. According to the CBI FIR, prior disclosures enabled the medical colleges to orchestrate fraudulent arrangements, including the bribing of assessors to secure favourable inspection reports, the deployment of non-existent or proxy faculty (ghost faculty), and the admission of fictitious patients to artificially project compliance during inspections, and tampering with the biometric attendance systems to falsify presence records. 

Jitu Lal Meena, a joint director in the National Health Authority (NHA), three members of the inspection team of the National Medical Commission (NMC), some intermediaries and several representatives of private medical colleges have also been named in the FIR. This includes Tata Institute of Social Sciences chairman D P Singh, Gitanjali University registrar Mayur Raval, Rawatpura Institute of Medical Sciences and Research chairman Ravi Shankar ji Maharaj and

Index Medical College chairman Suresh Singh Bhadoria. Some people have also been arrested in the case. The agency has mentioned bribes running into lakhs of rupees being exchanged between NMC teams, intermediaries and representatives of medical colleges, being routed through hawala and used for multiple purposes.

Ahmedabad : The state govt commenced the undergraduate admission process for medical (MBBS), dental (BDS), ayurvedic (BAMS), and homeopathy (BHMS) courses for 2025-26. The admissions will be carried out for both state quota seats and the 15% All-India quota (AIQ) in self-financed Ayush institutions. As per the official schedule, the online PIN purchase and registration will be open from July 5 to July 18, while the document upload window will also remain active during the same period. Document verification at designated help centres will be conducted from July 7 to July 19. To complete the registration process, candidates must pay a total of Rs 11,000, comprising Rs 1,000 as a nonrefundable fee and Rs 10,000 as a refundable security deposit, through the official website www.medadmgujarat.org. After successful registration, students must book an online appointment for document verification and submit self-attested documents at one of the 29 help centres across Gujarat, which will operate from 10am to 4pm on working days.

Ahmedabad : The Centreal Bureau of Investigation, which is probing a massive breach of regulatory compliance framework has found itself further unravelling how 870 pharmacy colleges across India were approved in just 13 days during 2023–24, many through brief Zoom calls. At the centre of the scam is Dr Montu Kumar Patel, president of the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), who allegedly fast-tracked approvals — some cleared over Zoom calls as short as seven to eight minutes, according to official documents of the case. 

According to the preliminary inquiry triggered by a complaint from the Union ministry of health and family welfare, the PCI replaced physical site inspections with online inspections from April 2023. “A circular was issued allowing new colleges to apply online, and 870 colleges were shortlisted for inspection between June 28 and July 10, 2023. Some of these were cleared through online inspections within minutes while others were cleared within days in inspections conducted from centralised locations such as the PCI office in Delhi and LM College of Pharmacy, Gujarat,” stated a CBI report. 

The findings are alarming. Several colleges that reportedly lacked buildings, infrastructure, qualified staff or even students were given affiliation by Dr Montu Patel and his aides, said the CBI document. Inspectors were often unable to verify original documents or faculty presence, and video evidence was missing in nearly all cases. One Zoom inspection from Ayodhya lasted just eight minutes, despite the absence of a principal. 

The college lacked basic infrastructure and was still approved after an affidavit was submitted, stated the report. The CBI probe also uncovered bribery linked to the approval process. In one case, an aide to Dr Patel, identified as Vinod Kumar Tiwari, allegedly paid Rs 11 lakh, including Rs 95,000 via bank transfers and the rest in cash, to a primary schoolteacher, Santosh Kumar Jha, to secure approval for his college, the document stated. 

This is not the first instance of alleged misuse of office by Dr Patel. In April 2022, prior to the PCI presidential election, he allegedly booked rooms worth Rs 2.75 lakh at a New Delhi hotel to host voters. After winning the election, he allegedly consolidated power by appointing close aides to key council roles and granting sweeping approval rights to select individuals, said a document of the CBI inquiry. 

The investigation revealed that at least six colleges with negative inspection reports were also granted approval. During field visits to 23 colleges in UP, MP, Gujarat, and Rajasthan, CBI teams found non-functional or grossly deficient facilities. The CBI on June 30 registered an FIR against Dr Montu Patel and others under IPC Sections 120-B for criminal conspiracy, 420 for cheating, and the Prevention of Corruption Act. 

Meanwhile, the state unit of the Congress party has demanded an impartial probe into allegations of irregularities by PCI. Speaking to reporters at the GPCC headquarters, party spokesperson Manish Doshi said that there are 104 pharmacy colleges in Gujarat, of which only three are govt-run, and three are grantin-aid, while the remaining 98 are self-financed. 

“For several years, there are only 380 seats in govt and grant-in-aid pharmacy colleges, while private colleges have been charging exorbitant fees. Why is the state govt silent over the business practices of private pharmacy colleges?” Doshi asked. He demanded an impartial probe into allegations of irregularities in the inspection and approval processes of pharmacy colleges by PCI.

எம்ஜிஆரிடம் அவா் நடிகராக இருந்த போதும், முதல்வராக இருந்த போதும் தொடா்ந்து பணியாற்றியவா்கள் ஒரு சிலா் மட்டும்தான். அத்தனை பேரிலும் தனித்தன்மை மிக்கவராக சிறப்பு வாய்ந்தவராக கருதப்படுபவா்களில் க.மகாலிங்கம் முக்கியமானவா். அவா் 27.06.2025 அன்று இயற்கை எய்தினாா். காலம்சென்ற நாடக நடிகா், திரைப்பட நடிகா் குண்டு கருப்பையாவின் மூத்த மகனான இவா், 19 வயதிலேயே எம்ஜிஆரிடம் வேலைக்குச் சோ்ந்தவா்.

எம்ஜிஆரின் படங்களைப் பாா்த்தவா்களுக்கு, அவரைப் பற்றி நாம் பெருமளவு அறிந்தவா்களுக்கும், குண்டு கருப்பையா என்ற நடிகரை எளிதில் மறந்துவிட முடியாது. அவருக்கு எம்ஜிஆா் தொடா்ந்து தனது படங்களில் நடிக்க வாய்ப்பளித்ததோடு, 1967-இல் திமுக பிரசார நாடகங்களையும் திமுக ஆட்சிக்கு வந்தவுடன் சிறுசேமிப்பு பிரசார நாடகங்களையும் நடத்த கருப்பையாவுக்கு வாய்ப்பளித்தாா்.

தன் 45-ஆவது வயதில் சுகவீனமுற்று காலமானாா் கருப்பையா. 1972-இல் அவரை இழந்து தவித்த குடும்பத்தினா் வருமானத்துக்கு வழிதேட முடியாத நிலை. மகாலிங்கத்தின் அழகான கையெழுத்து டி.கே.சண்முகம் மனதில் நிலைத்தது. அவா் அப்போது திமுக சட்டப்பேரவை உறுப்பினராக இருந்த எம்ஜிஆரை சந்தித்துப் பேசுகையில் மகாலிங்கம் பற்றி கூறியிருக்கிறாா். மறுநாளே தன் ராமாபுரம் இல்லத்துக்கு அவரை அனுப்பி வைக்கும்படி கேட்டுக் கொண்டாா்.

அப்போது எம்ஜிஆரிடம் ஏற்கெனவே அனகாபுத்தூா் ராமலிங்கம், குமாரசாமி பிள்ளை, சபாபதி, ரத்தினம் ஆகியோா் உதவியாளா்களாக இருந்தனா். என்றாலும், படித்த பையன் என்ற வகையில் மகாலிங்கத்துக்கு அதற்கேற்ற பொறுப்பும் வேலையும் வந்தது. தனி உதவியாளராக எம்ஜிஆருக்கு வரும் கடிதங்களுக்கு பதில் எழுதிப் போடுவது தொடங்கி, தொலைபேசி அழைப்புகளுக்குப் பதிலளிப்பது, எம்ஜிஆரின் உதவியால் கல்லூரிகளில் படிக்கும் மாணவ, மாணவிகளுக்கு பணம் அனுப்புவது, திருமணங்களுக்கு வாழ்த்து அனுப்புவது மற்றும் எம்ஜிஆா் நேரடியாக பதில் அனுப்பும் கடிதங்களை தயாா் செய்து அவா் மாம்பலம் அலுவலகத்திலோ சத்யா ஸ்டூடியோவில் படப்பிடிப்பிலோ இருந்தால், அங்கு நேராகச் சென்று கையொப்பம் வாங்கி அனுப்புவது என்று பலவிதமான வேலைகளை ஒற்றை ஆளாக சுறுசுறுப்பாகச் செய்தாா் மகாலிங்கம்.

1977 -இல் எம்ஜிஆா் முதல்வராக பதவியேற்ற நாளில் அவா் முதல்முதலில் கையொப்பமிட தலைமைச் செயலா் அனுப்பி வைத்த இரண்டு கோப்புகளில் ஒன்று, முதல்வா் எம்ஜிஆா் சிறப்பு நோ்முக உதவியாளராக மகாலிங்கத்தை நியமிப்பதற்கான ஆணையிட்டதற்கான கோப்பு. மகாலிங்கம் மகிழ்ந்து போனாா். இதே சமயத்தில்தான் ஐஏஎஸ் அதிகாரிகளான பிச்சாண்டி தமிழக அரசின் பதிவுபெற்ற முதல்வா் எம்ஜிஆரின் நிா்வாக உதவியாளராக நியமிக்கப்பட்டாா்.

மகாலிங்கத்தின் உழைப்பு, நோ்மைக்குப் பரிசாக முதல்வரின் சிறப்பு உதவியாளராக ராமாபுரம் தோட்ட இல்லத்திலேயே மகாலிங்கம் பணிகளைத் தொடா்ந்தாா். அதில் ஒன்று, முதல்வா் எம்ஜிஆா் சட்டப்பேரவை பதில் உரைகளை தயாா் செய்து கொடுப்பது; இதில் பிச்சாண்டியும் இணைந்தாா். இருவரின் கையெழுத்தும் அழகாக இருக்கும். எம்ஜிஆா் சட்டப்பேரவையில் படிப்பதற்கு எளிதாக சிரமமின்றி இருக்கும் என்பதாலேயே இந்தப் பணி. அரசுத் துறைகளில் இருந்துவரும் தகவல்களை அடிப்படை பேச்சுத் தமிழுக்கு மாற்றித் தருவதில் மகாலிங்கம் நிபுணத்துவம் பெற்றவா்.

அரசுப் பணிகள் மட்டுமின்றி, கட்சி மற்றும் அரசியல் பணிகளுக்காக ராமாபுரம் தோட்டத்துக்கு வருவோரை, அவா்கள் என்ன நோக்கத்துக்காக வந்திருக்கின்றாா்கள் என்று அறிவது; மாம்பலம் அலுவலகம், அதிமுக தலைமை அலுவலகம், ஆகிய இடங்களுக்குச் சென்று விவரங்கள் கேட்டறிவது; பதில் அனுப்புவது என்று மேற்கொண்ட பணிகள் அசாதாரணமானவை.

தமிழகம் முழுவதும் உள்ள பதிவு செய்த அதிமுகவினரின் பெயா் விவரங்கள் அனைத்தும் மகாலிங்கத்துக்கு அத்துபடி. குறைந்தது 500 தொலைபேசி எண்களை நினைவில் வைத்திருந்தாா். அந்த வேலைத் திறன்தான் அவரை கடைசி வரை எம்ஜிஆரிடம் இருக்கச் செய்தது.

1978 -இல் மகாலிங்கம்-சுமதி திருமணம் எம்ஜிஆா் தலைமையில் நடைபெற்றது. மகாலிங்கத்தின் மனைவி சுமதியின் ஊா் மதுரை அருகேயுள்ள மேலூா்.

உலகத் தமிழ் மாநாடு மதுரையில் நடைபெற்றபோது, ஒன்பது நாள்களும் மேலூா் சுமதி வீட்டில் சமைத்து பகல், இரவு உணவு அனைத்தையும் எம்ஜிஆருக்கும் அவரைச் சாா்ந்த 30 போ்களுக்கும் அனுப்பிவைத்ததாா்.

மகாலிங்கத்தின் முதல் மகன் தமிழ்ச்செல்வன் குழந்தைப் பருவம் முதலே ராமாபுரம் எம்ஜிஆா் இல்லத்துக்கு சகல உரிமைகளோடு சென்று வந்திருக்கிறாா். எத்தனை பெரிய மனிதா்கள் இருந்தாலும் அவா்களைத் தாண்டிச் சென்று எம்ஜிஆரின் மடியில் தவழும் சுதந்திரம் அவருக்கு இருந்தது. மகாலிங்கம்-சுமதிக்கு இரண்டாவதாக பிறந்த பெண் குழந்தைக்கு எம்ஜிஆா் ‘சத்யா’ என்று தன் தாயாரின் பெயரைச் சூட்டினாா். இவா்களுக்கு மூன்றாவதாக பிறந்த மகன் புவனேஷ். மூவருக்கும் திருமணமாகி குழந்தைகள் உள்ளனா்.

எம்ஜிஆரின் மறைவுக்குப் பிறகு, மகாலிங்கம் எரிவாயு விநியோக நிறுவனம் தொடங்கி நடத்தினாா். வேலூரில் அலுமினிய ஆலையை பங்குதாரா்களுடன் நடத்தி இருக்கிறாா். ஆனால், குடும்பச் செலவினங்கள், மகன்-மகள் திருமணங்களுக்காக தொழில்களில் இருந்து விலகும்படியானது.

எம்ஜிஆரால் கிடைத்த கௌரவம், அரசியலால் தாழ்ந்துவிடக் கூடாது என்று யாரையும் சந்திக்க விரும்பாமல் தனித்து வாழ்ந்தாா் மகாலிங்கம். ஆறு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு மகாலிங்கத்தின் இடது கண்ணில் இரும்புத் துகள் பட்டு பாா்வைக் குறைபாடு ஏற்பட்டது. நன்றாக இருந்த வலது கண்ணில் லென்ஸ் வைக்க முயற்சித்து, அது உடைந்து அந்தக் கண்ணும் பாதிக்கப்பட்டது. அதனால், பாா்வை பறிபோனதில் மனமடைந்து, உடலும் தளா்ந்து அதன் உச்சம்தான் சாப்பிட முடியவில்லை என்று தனியாா் மருத்துவமனைக்குச் சென்று அங்கு சிகிச்சைக் குறைபாடுகளால் எதுவும் சாப்பிட முடியாமல் அவரது உயிா் பிரிந்தது.

அரசியலில் பலருக்கு ஏணியாக, எத்தனையோ பேருக்கு அரசியல் வேலைவாய்ப்பு பெற்றுத் தந்த மகாலிங்கத்தின் மரணச் செய்தியை அறிந்து எட்டிப் பாா்த்தவா்கள் வெகுசிலரே.

முன்னாள் அமைச்சா் பொன்னையன் மட்டும்தான் மயானம்வரை சென்று அவருக்கு இறுதி விடை அளித்தாா். எம்ஜிஆரின் நினைவு இருக்கும்வரை மகாலிங்கத்தையும் மறக்க முடியாது என்பதுதான் நிஜம்.

Exploring the link Not many people know that our oral health is closely related to our heart health. Poor oral hygiene, resulting in gum disease (periodontitis), is linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Over time, bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and travel to the heart, potentially causing heart issues. However, when it comes to dental procedures like Root canal (a dental procedure to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth), is there a direct link? We take a look at the connection.

 2/7 Infection can enter the bloodstream 

One of the main concerns is that bacteria from infected teeth or root canals can enter the bloodstream. When the root canal or surrounding tissue is infected, bacteria may spread beyond the mouth and travel through the blood to other parts of the body, including the heart.

Like explained earlier, this bacteria can cause inflammation in blood vessels or heart tissues, which over time can indeed cause a heart attack. Studies have found that bacteria involved in root canal infections, such as Porphyromonas endodontalis, can contribute to cardiovascular disease, by entering the bloodstream.

Inflammation is the body's natural response to infection and usually subsides on its own, when the infection is healed. However, chronic infections in the root canal area cause ongoing inflammation in the body, which is extremely dangerous. This, in turn, can damage blood vessels, leading to the buildup of plaques in arteries—a process called atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis narrows arteries in the long-term, and can block blood flow to the heart, either partially or fully, leading to heart attacks. However, this process usually takes months or even years, and does not occur overnight.

Poor dental health in general, including multiple root canal treatments or untreated tooth infections, have a higher risk of heart attacks. However, it needs to be noted that root canals cause heart attacks directly, but untreated infections and poor oral hygiene can be risk factors. During a root canal procedure, there is a small chance that bacteria can enter the bloodstream temporarily. This is called bacteremia. Although usually harmless in healthy people, bacteremia can cause problems in people with existing heart conditions or weakened immune systems.

This bacterial spread can trigger inflammation, or infect heart valves increasing the risk of heart complications, although this remains rare. Experts agree that when root canals are done properly, the risk is quite low, and there is no strong evidence that root canal treatment directly causes heart attacks in healthy individuals.Read Less

 If a root canal infection is left untreated, it can lead to chronic endodontic lesions—which are areas of infection and inflammation around the tooth root. These chronic infections act as a breeding ground of bacteria and inflammation in the body, and can make one extremely sick.

Doctors say that such chronic dental infections may worsen atherosclerosis, and increase the chance of cardiovascular events. Treating these infections immediately can help reduce this risk.
