191 MBBS seats vacant after record 7 counselling rounds

Colleges Reduce Fees; State Seeks Relaxation In Eligibility

Sruthysusan.Ullas@timesofindia.com 27.10.2026

Bengaluru: In a first in the past five years, as many as 191 seats in Karnataka’s medical colleges have remained vacant, with counselling drawing to a close Monday night. Not a single medical seat was vacant in Karnataka in the past five years. This year, all BDS seats have been filled.

Multiple efforts have been simultaneously launched in a bid to fill these management seats. The directorate of medical education (DME) has written to National Medical Commission to lower the entry barrier so that candidates get a chance to pick a seat; colleges are offering deep discounts to sweeten the deal; and Karnataka Examinations Authority has called for a last-minute round, asking students to enter options by 5pm and report to colleges by 6pm.

With this, seven rounds of counselling were conducted. After the second stray vacancy round Sunday, a total of 273 medical seats remained vacant. KEA conducted two different rounds Monday, where 84 medical seats were allotted. In the morning round, 62 medical and six dental seats were allotted. In the evening round, 22 medical and five dental seats were allotted, he said.

In recent years, “this is the first time that allotments have been carried out across so many rounds”, said KEA executive director H Prasanna. “If Medical Counselling Committee grants further permission to fill the remaining vacant seats, KEA will conduct additional rounds of counselling and allot the seats accordingly,” he added.

An often-overlooked key factor for sluggish uptake is that NRI quota was introduced in govt colleges last year. Fees in govt colleges are way cheaper than in private colleges. Karnataka has the highest number of MBBS seats in the country, with 15,395 on offer.

In 2024, there were 9,282 seats in 65 colleges. In 2025, it rose to 10,559 in 66 colleges. With the govt planning to establish one medical college in every district, there are high chances the state will add more seats in the near future.

Sujatha Rathod, director of medical education, said the cut-off percentile now is 50. “We’ve requested NMC to pare the percentile by a few points so that more students could make the  cut,” she said, adding they sent a letter in this regard on Thursday.

Every seat unfilled is lakhs of revenue lost. Many colleges are now offering seats for about Rs 80 lakh for 4.5 years, including hostel fees, much lower than what’s communicated to KEA at the beginning of admissions. Also, govt colleges offer NRI seats at Rs 25 lakh per annum. “It’s clear a large number of management seats would go vacant this year unless qualifying cutoff marks are lowered,” said Mithesh Kumar Moodukonaje, founder, National Pre University Students, Parents and Teachers Association. “Medical colleges run on NRI fees. It makes up for subsidised fees of the other categories. It is important for colleges to have this category filled up,” said the owner of a medical college.

While many seats came into the pool late, high fees for management quota is a deterrent. “Also, this generation is very particular about colleges they pick and they usually go by popular opinion,” added the DME. NRI quota in govt colleges is a story in itself. For instance, some 105 seats in 14 colleges are available at Rs 25 lakh per annum against nearly Rs 40 lakh per annum in private institutes.

The NRI fee at MS Ramaiah Medical College, Sapthagiri Institute of Medical Sciences, and Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research is prohibitively high. Some 24 lakh write entrance test for 1.4 lakh seats. “While the cream gets government seats, the rest of the students cannot afford a management-quota seat,” said Bhagavan BC, vice chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, the umbrella university for all medical-related programmes. “We’ve no control over the management-quota free matrix. At best, we’ve been recommending private colleges to reduce fees,” he added.

DPH circular in line with conduct rules, says Minister

Health Minister K.G. Arunraj on Monday clarified that the recent circular issued by the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine restricting government employees from publicly criticising government policies was not new but reiterated provisions already contained in the conduct rules for government employees.

Responding to a question on the circular, he told reporters, “They can raise demands and organise protests relating to salary increase and permanent jobs. There is no connection between this and the circular. The intention of the circular is that the employees should not criticise the government’s policies. There are no attempts to deny their rights.”

He was taking part in an event to mark Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day. The Minister said that it is mandatory to iodise salt, and that food safety officials took up periodic inspections to check if iodised salt was being sold. Stressing on the need to consume iodised salt, he said that fine to the tune of nearly ₹1.39 crore has been imposed and collected from shops for failing to sell iodised salt.

In another event, the Minister presented appointment orders to 33 senior entomologists selected through the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission.

Showers skipped city as low pressure area shifted to delta dists

Chennai: The city and neighbouring districts received little rain over the weekend despite forecasts of heavy showers, as the low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea moved south towards the delta region before merging with cyclone Arnab over the Bay of Bengal.

The system brought heavy rain to the delta and southern districts. Weathermen said Tamil Nadu could see a break in monsoon rainfall for at least a week, until the cyclone dissipates. The IMD has forecast light rain for Chennai and light to moderate rain over the Western Ghats and southern districts on Tuesday. A meteorologist said the low-pressure area, which was expected to move over north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry towards the Bay of Bengal, instead moved south towards the delta before merging with the cyclone, leaving light to trace amounts of rain in the city.

For the next two or three days, the low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining south coastal Tamil Nadu, along with an associated trough extending from the Lakshadweep area, may continue to bring some rain over the Western Ghats and south TN. “The moisture will be concentrated around the cyclone, and dry weather may prevail till it dissipates. Even if there is light rain in isolated places, there is a possibility that the last three days of the month could be dry across Tamil Nadu,” an IMD official said. “Daytime temperatures may rise by a degree or two, but Oct is not the season for days to become unbearably hot.”

On Tuesday, Chennai and its suburbs may receive light rain, with thunderstorms and lightning in some areas. Partly cloudy skies are expected, with maximum temperatures of 32°C-33°C and minimum temperatures of 26°C-27°C. The IMD has forecast a 2°C-3°C rise in daytime temperatures at isolated places over north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal from Oct 28 to 30, while temperatures are likely to remain near normal in south Tamil Nadu. Blogger Pradeep John said Tamil Nadu could receive good rainfall in Nov. The state has received 215mm against the northeast monsoon’s seasonal normal of 440mm, he said. “With a good Nov expected, Tamil Nadu is well placed to cross the seasonal normal,” he said.

Updated On :26 அக்டோபர் 2026, 3:30 am

TN braces for one more day of heavy rain

FULL COVERAGE: P 4, 5

Cyclone: Andhra Pradesh, Odisha on high alert, P 8 Several districts in TN experienced heavy rainfall on Sunday, with the downpours expected to persist through Monday.

While districts such as Madurai and Coimbatore have been issued an orange alert, Chennai and the Cauvery delta are expected to see a drier week as the deep depression over Bay of Bengal moves northwards. Landslides near Kodaikanal cut off hill villages, disrupting access for 250 families, while flooding and rising reservoir levels affected normal life in southern districts. Fallen trees and boulders disrupted traffic and electricity supply. In Coimbatore, an hour-long downpour caused waterlogging in low-lying areas, underpasses and bus stands. Meanwhile, districts such as Thanjavur and Mayiladuthurai require more rain to recharge the groundwater table.
