CHENNAI: Isolated incidents of the indelible ink disappearing after a single wash were reported in Coimbatore North and Chennai. While some more incidents were reported on social media, Express could not verify the claims.

Vishnu Swaroop was among the first to vote in his constituency in Coimbatore (North). He voted at the Kovilmedu Corporation High School at 7.30 am and came back home to realise that his electoral ink had washed away by 10.30 am.

“I called up the flying squad toll free number and the constituency returning officer, and did not get a proper response. So I went back and told the presiding officer about the issue at 4 pm. They inked my index again,” he said. However when he reached home at 4.15 pm and washed his hands, the ink washed off again, he said.

The returning officer of Coimbatore (North) however denied any such incident in the constituency. Another resident from Chennai said that her ink was barely visible after she used alcohol based sanitiser on it.

The pandemic, which put employees in their homes, has become an ‘enabler’ this time

Kerala goes to poll today.

TIRUCHY: Many a campaign has been held by the Election Commission to raise awareness among people, especially the youth, on exercising their franchise. However, not every time can one travel to their hometown to get inked, thanks to their hectic lifestyle. However, this time probably, the tables have turned. Call it the ‘pandemic effect’, the work from home option has enabled more youth to come forward and cast their votes this time.

“Usually, we are given a day off to vote. But to just come down for that day and return to our workplace on time is taxing. Sometimes, there is a job pending as well. Given all that, only if employees can manage a long weekend, they go for voting. Many of my colleagues, and even I had missed out on voting chances several times,” says Abul Hassan, an IT professional from Tiruchy. “This time, however, we had it easy. Our employer in Chennai hasn’t called us back yet, and we are continuing to work from home. So, most of us are in our hometowns,” he adds.

K Akil from Karur, who works at a multi-national company in Bengaluru, shares the same opinion. “If there was no work from home, I might not have come this time,” she says. “This time, I did not even take a half-day leave. I was at the polling station by 8 am, was guided to the booth, got inked and walked back home. It did not take over 30 minutes,” she adds.

Kamaal, a DMK functionary who oversees booth agents in the locality, says: “Many youth in this locality are employed ar MNCs in Chennai, Bengaluru, and New Delhi. I know a fair share of them who missed the 2019 Parliamentary elections and the previous Assembly polls. This time, however, the turnout was impressive.”

PUDUKKOTTAI: It’s usually only in movies that we see NRIs flying down to their natives to cast their votes. Taking this spirit of patriotism up a notch, 29-year-old Sathiyasheelan travelled all the way from Singapore to Senthankudi in Alangudi to exercise his franchise.

Sathiyasheelan reached his village 20 days ago. Not only is he interested in voting, but also passionate about the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK). “I came early to garner votes for the party, and to ensure that we improve our performance in this election. I hope that the party gets double the votes it did in the 2019 elections,” he says.

An engineer by qualification, Sathiyasheelan works for building maintenance in Singapore. He says though it was difficult getting leave from work, he did it for the elections. “I’ve been interested in politics and the betterment of people’s lives since childhood. I got involved with the NTK in 2009, even before its inception. I love the Tamil culture, and want to help protect it,” he adds.

Sathiyasheelan hopes to have inspired others in his village to vote, and says he didn’t mind the Covid tests and quarantine as it was all for a cause. “If I can come all the way from Singapore, people can travel for a few kilometers to vote,” he says.

₹1.12L Cash Recovered, EC Probe on

Srikkanth D & Ram Sundaram TNN

Chennai:7.4.2021

Four individuals found carrying two electronic voting machines (EVMs) and one VVPAT machine on twowheelers in Velachery soon after the poll on Tuesday sparked outrage, with the DMK and the Congress accusing a serious breach of protocol. Cash worth ₹1.12 lakh was also found on them.

Chief electoral officer Satyabrata Sahoo said that as per their preliminary inquiry, the motorists were corporation employees and the EVMs they were carrying were not the ones used for polling. “Detailed inquiry is on. As per preliminary findings of the DEO, these two (machines) were not polled EVMs. We will take strict action on any violation of SOPs,” Sahoo said.

It all started when a food delivery agent noticing the machines being transported on two bikes confronted the riders after one of the machines fell down on Taramani main road in Velachery. As the news spread, a group of DMK and Congress functionaries rushed to the spot and picked up an argument. C V Elango, a DMK functionary, said that even as they were verifying the identity of the men, police reached the scene and took them away saying they need to investigate the matter.

‘Bikers attempted to flee when surrounded’

Elango said, “What raised the suspicion was the fact that the bikers attempted to flee when surrounded.” They were wearing ‘Polling Official’ badges, but we suspect them to be AIADMK workers, he said.

Tension prevailed outside Velachery police station where hundreds of cadres from the DMK and the Congress gathered. Police said the motorists were revenue department officials and senior officials were holding talks with Congress candidate Hasan Maulaana and DMK functionaries.

Former DMK mayor Ma Subramanian, who held a long meeting with police and polling officials at the station, said the individuals were poll officials, but he had asked the election commission to verify their call records to identify if there was any wrongdoing. “We seek a fair probe into the matter and a reelection for the booth concerned from where the machines were transported. We also want legal and departmental action against the officers concerned,” Subramanian said.

Regarding the cash, Subramanian said the poll officials have told them that the cash was meant for staff salary and they have sought an investigation on that too. DMK functionaries will meet CEO Satyabrata Sahoo on Wednesday.

TNCC president K S Alagiri questioned Sahoo’s stand on Velachery EVM episode, and said: “Since afternoon, we have complained about removal of names of DMK supporters from the voters list in Velachery. Inaction was his answer. Now, EVMs have been seized from unauthorized people,” said Alagiri demanding immediate action.

Velachery MNM candidate Santhosh Babu said, “I have been a poll observer more than nine times. These units are never handheld or moved using two wheelers, unless there is an emergency. Since this has happened after the polling process, it raises suspicion. This is a clear standard operating procedure violation. When all of us are complaining, AIADMK is missing from the scene. This gives further suspicion,” he added. MNM has demanded a countermanding of elections at DAV school polling booth in Adambakkam.

Kerala HC issues 10 directives to EC in order to prevent bogus voting

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Kochi:01.04.2021

The Kerala high court on Wednesday directed the Election Commission of India to take all possible steps to prevent double voting or impersonated voting during the assembly election. Disposing a petition filed by opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala seeking steps to prevent fake or double voting, a division bench of Chief Justice S Manikumar and Justice Shaji P Chaly issued 10 directives.

It asked the election commission to finalize the list of demographically similar entries (DSE) and absent-shifted-dead voters (ASD) in the voters list and furnish copies to political parties and presiding officers forthwith. The commission should issue a public notice cautioning voters that any attempt to cast multiple votes will be dealt with strictly, it directed.

The photographs of all identified ASD voters should be taken in the polling booths and their signature and thumb impression taken. A declaration should also be collected from such voters, the court said.

It also asked the commission to ensure that ASD voters are allowed to leave the polling booths only after the indelible ink on their finger dries. The court recorded the submission of the election commission’s counsel that photographs of ASD voters will be collected, digitized and kept. All safeguards provided in the Representation of People's Act for free and fair election should be scrupulously followed to avoid multiple or bogus voting, the judgment said.

TENKASI: Three persons including a woman teacher, her husband and a Tenkasi resident were arrested for sharing a picture of her postal ballot on social media here on Tuesday.

“The suspected teacher from Vellakal cast her vote on the postal ballot which was delivered by polling staff. Her husband, a retired army man, took a photo of that ballot and posted it on social media. The third suspect, a resident of Tenkasi, forwarded the same to his friends. All three have been arrested.

A Surandai-based woman teacher was mistakenly suspended on Monday based on the recommendation of the District Educational Officer, Kokila, for allegedly posting a picture of her postal ballot. However, the inquiry conducted by the police inspector Balamurugan revealed that the polling staff wrongly delivered the postal ballot of the Surandai-based teacher to the teacher whose postal ballot picture was shared on social media,” said police.

Referring to the serial number of the postal ballot which was posted on social media, the School Education Department had suspended the Surandai-based teacher. Representatives of Tamil Nadu Primary School Teachers Federation and the teacher petitioned the District Election Officer (DEO) against her suspension.

‘My aunt said she was stepping aside for now, told me to take up poll fight’

TALKING TO TOI ELECTIONS 2021

‘My aunt said she was stepping aside for now, told me to take up poll fight’

AMMK general secretary T T V Dhinakaran says the decision to step aside from politics by his aunt V K Sasikala was her own and that no one forced her to take the call. He denied the BJP had forced her to step aside or tried to bring the AIADMK and the AMMK together. In an interview to D Govardan amid his campaign in Tiruvannamalai on Wednesday, Dhinakaran exuded confidence that the AMMK-led alliance will triumph in the assembly election on the back of people’s yearning for a real change.

How is the response from the people to your campaign?

The response has been very good. The ground reality is reflecting the people’s yearning for change. They have understood that the present government has betrayed the public as well as those who anointed them to the position of power. On the other, the DMK has created an illusion, as it does in every election, that it is coming to power. But the people are ready to demolish that illusion. People are looking for a real change and the AMMK has formed a formidable alliance with the DMDK, SDPI and Owaisi’s AIMIM as well as several smaller local parties, besides several organisations and fronts too have extended their support. Moreover, people are wholeheartedly supporting us and will ensure that our alliance wins with a clear majority.

DMK president M K Stalin says his alliance will win all 234 seats, while AIADMK minister S P Velumani has said their alliance will win more than 200. How many seats have they left for your alliance?

Had Velumani said his party will lose more than 200 seats, it would be closer to reality. The DMK always creates a hype that it will emerge the winner right from the days of Kalaignar (M Karunanidhi) and the best example was the 1980 assembly election, where the DMK had even printed victory posters and had kept them ready for his birthday. But the people re-elected MGR as the CM. The DMK cannot aspire to get people’s votes, beyond those of the allied parties. I am sure people will repose faith in the AMMK.

Your aunt V K Sasikala was given a rousing welcome on her return. So, why did she step aside from politics?

There were a lot of expectations. But not from us. After returning from Bengaluru, she wanted to get into politics full-time. But the repeated statements by AIADMK leaders that she is not welcome, hurt her. Did she say that she wanted to rejoin the AIADMK? It is one thing that someone wants to join and another if the party leaders make statements on their own. It was these people, who had elected her as their general secretary and fell at her feet to accept that post. Watching these developments, she expressed her anguish and told me that she was stepping aside for the present and asked me to go ahead with my electoral fight.

There were reports that the BJP had forced her to step aside.

No. It is not true. No one from the BJP spoke either to me or her. No one coerced her to step aside.

There were reports that I too have been forced to step away from politics. But I informed the media that no one can coerce me and that the first list of candidates will be released on March 10 and I did that. Some vested interests created such rumours.

Who are these vested interests?

Our political enemies and our betrayers, besides the media which supports them and the agents who participate in political debates on television channels. The state is also involved in spreading such rumours. It is definitely an act of those, whose poll prospects will be affected by the AMMK.

There were also reports that the BJP intervened to bring the AIADMK and the AMMK together.

No. There were no talks like that. I also saw such media reports. But no one, especially from the BJP, spoke to me.

There were reports that O Panneerselvam was in touch with you.

It is a blatant lie. We never spoke to each other. In the past people had even spread rumours about Amma (J Jayalalithaa) having a daughter.

Such rumours are the handiwork of our enemy – the DMK or the betrayers – Palaniswami and Company.

But why is Edappadi Palaniswami so cut up with you?

It is because of the fear of losing. To reclaim the AIADMK democratically is our aim. That is why the AMMK was formed and he now fears that our party will defeat them. They are only banking on purchasing votes. But they know they will not succeed. People also know that it is their money that is coming back to them and they will take it. But we will do an RK Nagar across the state.

On Tuesday, O Panneerselvam told a news channel that he never doubted Sasikala in the death of Jayalalithaa and the party is open to examine her re-entry to the party. What do you think made him take such a stand now?

I also saw that. There is opposition building against him in his constituency and the fear of losing could have force him to say such a thing now. He started a ‘dharmayudh’ against our family and the world knows what he had said about us then. If he is changing his stand, it must be due to belated realisation of his folly. You have to pose the question to him. But since this is happening closer to the election, one has to doubt his realisation.

While you attack both the DMK and the AIADMK, you seem to be silent on the BJP in your campaign.

In 2019, it was the Lok Sabha election and hence I had to attack the BJP.

This is an assembly election and the fight is only between the AMMK, the DMK and the AIADMK. Whenever a move is made by the BJP against the interests of Tamil people, I attack it.

Contesting elections is an expensive affair. With your aunt backing out, how will you manage without her financial support?

We are heading into the election based on the strength of our cadres and the personal financial strength of our candidates. Is Chinnamma (Sasikala) running a finance company to fund me? What support can she provide, when she herself has come out of prison after four years.

If as predicted by opinion polls, the DMK wins, is there a possibility of the AIADMK and the AMMK coming together?

First, the cadres will come together. The AIADMK leaders with moneybags and all those who spoke ill about us will look for alternative pastures out of fear. If by chance, please note, only by chance, the DMK comes to power, everyone will know where these leaders, with skeletons in their cupboards, will be. All those who are not at fault or don’t have any dirty baggage will come together as Amma’s cadres.

Will it be a unified AIADMK then?

Only the cadres will decide when that happens.

Star constituency to see a battle royale between doctor & actor

Ram.Sundaram@timesgroup.com

Chennai:  25.03.2021

Thousand Lights constituency, where DMK supremo M K Stalin recorded a hat-trick, is now the venue of a doctor-versus-actor tussle.

While actor-turned-politician Khushbu Sundar’s ‘Lotus’ dance to popularise her poll symbol has gone viral on social media, her opponent Dr Ezhilan is sticking to door-to-door canvassing. In terms of star value, this constituency is next only to Chepauk. Khushbu’s eleventhhour nomination by the BJP took everybody by surprise, as the national party had only a few months ago received into its fold the DMK’s sitting MLA Ku Ka Selvam. Earlier there were rumours that Khushbu might be fielded against Udhayanidhi in Chepauk, and visuals of Khushbu’s roadshow in that constituency only added fuel to the story.

Khusbu seems to be in no mood to miss out on this opportunity. Right from the day of her nomination, her rallies have attracted crowds. But the larger question is whether or not it will be converted into votes. The BJP is confident that her popularity and star value will be of great help here. Besides, they also pin hope on that the fact that the minority population at Thounsand Lights area might support Khushbu. Around 10% of the voters are Muslims.

Maulana Ghulam Mohammed Mehdi Khan, Chief Qazi at the Thounsand Lights Mosque, however, said, “Though there has been no major disturbance to communal harmony here so far, we are skeptical about some of the changes proposed by parties in power now.”

It is a loaded statement, indicating that it would take Khushbu much more than a dance-andcharm campaign to breach the DMK bastion. The DMK has won nine of the 15 assembly elections here and Stalin three elections between 1996 and 2006.

The party’s present candidate Dr Ezhilan is the son of N Naganathan, renowned academic and former vice-chairman of the state planning commission. Ezhilan, who gained prominence through his relief work during the 2015 floods, Covid outbreak and protests against NEET and NRC, has assured the electorate that he would improve the living standard of every resident by developing housing board settlements, schools, hospitals and decongesting roads. “There is an urgent need to develop entrepreneurial skills of youngsters at Thousand Lights constituency, which has hundreds of small-scale enterprises like textile shops and printing presses,” he said. Resident welfare associations here say that MLA Ku Ka Selvam’s limited availability and absence of corporation ward councillors made their lives more difficult.

For instance, Greater Chennai Corporation had proposed to construct an elevated corridor from Sterling Road junction to Nelson Manickam Road to reduce congestion on Choolaimedu’ High Road. But till date, it hasn’t materialised and there letters sent to all stakeholders went unanswered, said Kasturi Rangan from Choolaimedu Exnora.

People In Ambattur Demand Tax Rationalization Ahead Of Polls

Komal.Gautham@timesgroup.com

Chennai:20.03.2021

Gone are the days when people would submit a general list of demands to political party candidates. Now, heads of residents’ welfare associations come to meetings with candidates armed with specific data — either based on their own surveys or sourced from government agencies — to show how past promises had remained unfulfilled and how new ones should be met.

Residents of Ambattur want property tax calculated on basic street rate and area of the house. S Swaminathan of the JAMBA United Welfare Association, which includes five residential colonies, trots out government data to show how property tax in Ambattur since 2012 has remained ₹3.30 per sq ft against a mere 50 paise per sq ft in Sholinganallur and not more than ₹1 in Adyar and the posh Boat Club area. “If the candidates concerned don’t promise to rectify this anomaly, we will vote for NOTA [none of the above],” he said.

The Tansi Nagar Residents Welfare Association in Velachery wants an integrated market, with secretary M Balakrishanan adding that the government should come up with a policy for sewage treatment based on the demand and population increase. “An additional sewage pumping station on Taramani Link Road will reduce the load on the existing station during rainy days. Also, an additional EB power substation is needed.”

K Mohan of Saidapet said integrated hospitals are the need of the hour. “People still have to go to Triplicane or central for treatment,” he said visited the area.

Kamakshi Subramaniyan of the Kalakshetra Colony Welfare Association says encroachments on Elliot’s beach in Besant Nagar should be cleared and the famous stretch given a revamp. “With the Marina beautification project on, we want the government to focus on Elliot’s beach as well.”

In Perambur, residents say widening of bus route stretches such as Perambur High Road, Madhavaram High Road and Paper Mills Road, providing pedestrian friendly footpaths, laying medians and constructing speed breakers have been promised but never fulfilled.

Finally, residents want the candidates, once elected, to use their office to enforce a proper quality audit system to oversee the infrastructure development work taken up by the local administration. “Put pressure on the state administration to conduct the local body elections and set up a ward committee. Citizens’ participation in matters relating to infrastructure development, security and conservancy can help build a model constituency within the city of Chennai,” several Perambur residents say.

DEMANDING ACCOUNTABILITY: Residents want candidates to address their concerns

If the candidates concerned don’t promise to rectify this anomaly (property tax rates), we will vote for NOTA (none of the above).

Kamal offers SEET to help TN students enter MBBS courses

Kamal offers SEET to help TN students enter MBBS courses

Nivedha.Selvam1@timesgroup.com

20.03.2021

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) has promised to replace the National Eligibility -cum Entrance Test (NEET) with State Eligibility cum Entrance Test (SEET) for medical admission in the state if the party is voted to power.

It is one of the biggest promises in the party’s manifesto that was released in Coimbatore on Friday. The party has promised to provide jobs for 50 lakh to one crore people and double the per capita income in 10 years.

Saying that most government school students in the state found it difficult to crack NEET, Kamal said SEET question papers will be framed based on the state board syllabus to make it easy for the students.

The MNM has envisioned a plan to revamp the state’s education system by abolishing Class X and XII public examinations and introducing a four-year-long pre-graduation programme from Class IX. The manifesto said only one examination - either public examination or entrance - will be held.

Terming the manifesto a “living document”, Kamal said it was prepared with a long-term vision and not as a poll stunt.

Kamal took a dig at major political parties, saying freebies and doles promised by them would only add more burden to a debt-ridden state. He said MNM had better ideas other than relying only on tax and getting loans to promote growth, generate revenue and bring the state out of debt.

He said the governmentrun enterprises such as Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation could be turned profitable by making employees shareholders.

Referring to the financial assistance that other parties had promised for homemakers, the actor said MNM will create an environment for them to earn by honing their skills. “With skill development, women will be able to earn better on their own.”

MNM has promised to set up ‘makkal’ canteens, which will be different from ‘Amma’ canteens and ration shops. Here, people can purchase groceries and other items at a reasonable price. It also vowed to implement former president A P J Abdul Kalam’s Provision of Urban Amenities to Rural Areas (PURA) plan to make villages self-sufficient and turn unorganized workers into organized workers. “All the schemes mentioned in our manifesto are practically possible to implement,” Kamal said.

Asked about the recent income-tax raid on the premises of the party’s treasurer A Chandrasekaran, Kamal said it was a raid on an individual and had nothing to do with the MNM. “Action will be taken against him if he is proven guilty.”

In Salem, Stalin mixes with one and all

In Salem, Stalin mixes with one and all

DMK president M K Stalin surprised people of of Salem city on Tuesday as he stepped out of his campaign vehicle and went door to door seeking support.

Stalin, who was to address campaign meetings in Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami’s home district, not only surprised the people on the busy streets of Shevapet but also his own cadres as the walk was unscheduled.

Party men said that the DMK leader, who was driving down from a hotel, suddenly asked to stop the vehicle at Paul Market in Shevapet. The convoy came to grinding halt and Stalin stepped out of the car. The next moment, scores of men and women gathered around him even as his own cadres elbowed for space to get close to their leader.

Stalin sprung more surprises, as he patiently posed for selfies with everyone, and also asked all those jostling to get near him to come closer for better selfies. “We were pleasantly shocked after Stalin Aiya invited us to come closer take selfies,” said Radha, a transgender.

For the next two hours when Stalin was there, walking on the narrow streets of Shevapet, Stalin interacted with everyone he met.

Later addressing a meeting at Gajjalnaickenpatty on the outskirts of the city, Stalin said the DMK was going to win the elections. “We are going to win all the 234 constituencies,’’ he said. Lashing out at EPS, he called upon the public to put an end to the AIADMK government.

“This election should be the last election to Palaniswami,” he said, Recalling EPS’ allegations that late chief minister.

Electorate Stands By Leaders Who Nurture Constituencies

Winning successive elections from a constituency for six to eight times is no mean feat. Tamil Nadu assembly has a few veterans like DMK general secretary S Durai Murugan, who has won seven times from Katpadi and twice from Ranipet assembly segments, school education minister K A Sengottaiyan, who has won seven times from Gobichettipalayam, and fisheries minister D Jayakumar, who has won five times from Royapuram. These leaders, except in elections influenced by unprecedented waves – Rajiv assassination in 1991 and anti-AIADMK sentiments in 1996 – have retained their segments by maintaining close relationship cultivated over decades with their electorate.

A young Durai Murugan had to travel 30kms to Gudiyatham to attend school and had seen women drawing water from rail wagons due to drought and high salinity of groundwater. When elected in 1971, he convinced CM M Karunanidhi to sanction a drinking water scheme for Katpadi, which was completed in two years. Later, as PWD minister, he got a university, law college, combined courts, several schools and a host of government departments for Katpadi, leaving Vellore, the district headquarters, in envy. “I love my constituency more than my wife and children,” the 82-yearold leader told TOI. When MGR floated a party and posed a big challenge in Ranipet, Karunanidhi shifted his lieutenant Durai Murugan to Ranipet segment. He won from Ranipet in 1977 and 1980 and went back to Katpadi in the next election. Since then, he has won six times from Katpadi.

Erode strongman K A Sengottaiyan, considered as one of the best organisers among politicians in Tamil Nadu, entered the fray and won from Sathyamangalam in 1977. He later shifted to Gobichettipalayam and won the seat seven times. Jayalalithaa sacked him from the cabinet in 2012 after his staff got arrested on charges of criminal intimidation. Still, he won the same seat in 2016.

His colleague, minister D Jayakumar has won from Royapuram five times. He has developed a close bond with his electorate, which he claims, is growing stronger with every passing day.

There are veterans like KKSSR Ramachandran, who represented Sattur six times as AIADMK, Thayaka Marumalarchi Kazhagam and DMK MLA since 1977. The MGR acolyte also won Aruppukottai seat after the 2011 delimitation, when much of the erstwhile Sattur was annexed with Aruppukottai.

Speaker P Dhanapal is a five-time MLA, who has represented Sankari, Rasipuram and Avanashi seats. DMK leader K Ponmudi won four times from Villupuram before moving to Tirukoilur in 2016, while his colleague E V Velu won from Thandarambattu thrice and later from Tiruvannamalai twice. Velu, who represented the AIADMK and the DMK, says, one should be “service-minded and remain genuine” to win the confidence of the people.
