கூகுள் நு டோனோமி (Nu Tonomy) என்ற பெயரிலான ஸ்டார்ட் அப் நிறுவனம் சிங்கப்பூரில் டிரைவர் இல்லாத டாக்சி சேவையை அறிமுகப்படுத்தியுள்ளது. இதன்படி வாடிக்கையாளர்கள் இந்நிறு வன செயலியை (App) பயன்படுத்தி இந்த டாக்சி சேவையை பயன்படுத்திக் கொள்ள முடியும். முதல் கட்டமாக சோதனை அடிப்படையில் ஒரு குறிப் பிட்ட வழித்தடத்தில் இந்தக் கார் சேவையை இயக்குகிறது.

தொடக்கத்தில் இந்த கார் பயணம் முற்றிலும் இலவசமாகும். முதலில் 6 கார்களை இதுபோல் டிரைவர் இன்றி இயக்கும் இந்நிறுவனம் இந்த ஆண்டு இறுதிக்குள் 12 ஆக உயர்த்தத் திட்டமிட்டுள்ளது. 2018-ம் ஆண்டுக்குள் சிங்கப்பூர் முழுவதும் டிரைவர் இல்லாத டாக்சி சேவையை வழங்குவதே இந்நிறுவனத்தின் இலக்காகும். தொடக்கத்தில் இந்த வாடகைக் கார்கள் 6.5 சதுர கி.மீ. தூர அளவிற்குள் இயக்கப்படும். இப்பகுதி ஒன் நார்த் என்றழைக்கப்படுகிறது. இங்குள்ள வாடிக்கையாளர்கள் நு டோனோமி செயலியைப் பயன்படுத்தினால் அவர்கள் இருப்பிடத் துக்கு கார் வந்து அவர்களை அழைத்துச் செல்லும். தொடக்க நாளன்றே 12 பேர் இந்நிறுவன செயலியைப் பதிவிறக்கம் செய்து வாடிக்கையாளர்களாக பதிவு செய்து கொண்டுள்ளனர்.

ரெனால்ட் ஜே, மிட்சுபிஷி ஐ-எம் உள்ளிட்ட கார்கள் மாற்றம் செய்யப்பட்டு இதற்காகப் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளன. இந்தக் கார்களில் 6 செட் லிடார் எனப்படும் உணர் கருவி பொறுத்தப்பட்டிருக்கும். இது ரேடார் போன்று செயல்படும். இதுதவிர காரின் மேல் பகுதியில் ஒன்று சுழன்று கொண்டிருக்கும். முன்புறத்தில் இரண்டு கேமராக்கள் உள்ளன. இது டிராபிக் சிக்னல் விளக்கின் நிற மாற்றங்களை உணர்ந்து காரை இயக்கும்.

கார் எங்கிருந்து தேவை, எதுவரை பயணம் செய்யப் போகிறோம் போன்ற விவரங்களை பதிவு செய்து விட்டால் போதுமானது. இதுபோன்ற டிரைவர் தேவைப்படாத கார்கள் புழக்கத்துக்கு வரும்போது சிங்கப்பூரில் கார்களின் எண்ணிக்கை 9 லட்சத்திலிருந்து 3 லட்சமாகக் குறையும் என கணிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

டிரைவர் தேவைப்படாத டாக்சியை அறிமுகப்படுத்தியுள்ள நு டோனோமி நிறுவனத்தில் சிங்கப்பூர் மற்றும் மாச சூசெட்ஸ் அலுவலகங்களில் மொத்தமே 50 பணியாளர்கள்தான் உள்ளனர். 2013-ம் ஆண்டு உருவாக்கப்பட்ட இந்நிறு வனம் தொடக்கத்தில் அமெரிக்க ராணு வத்துக்கு ரோபோட்டிக் வாகனங் களை உருவாக்கும் ஆராய்ச்சியில் ஈடுபட்டிருந்தது. கடந்த ஓராண் டாகத்தான் டிரைவர் இல்லாத வாகன செயல்பாட்டில் கவனம் செலுத்தியது.

கடந்த ஆண்டு சிங்கப்பூர் அரசாங்கம் ஒன் நார்த் எனும் பகுதியில் டிரைவர் இல்லாத வாகனத்தை சோதனை ரீதியில் செயல்படுத்திப் பார்க்க இந்நிறுவனத்துக்கு அனுமதி அளித்தது. இதைச் செயல்படுத்த சிங் கப்பூர் தரைவழிப் போக்குவரத்து ஆணையத்துடன் இந்நிறுவனம் ஒப்பந் தம் செய்து அதை நிறைவேற்றியுள்ளது.

சிங்கப்பூரில் தட்ப வெப்ப நிலை மிகவும் சரியான அளவில் உள் ளது. இங்குள்ள வாகன ஓட்டிகள் சட்ட விதிகளை முறைப்படி பின்பற்றுகின் றனர். இதனால் இங்கு டிரைவர் இல்லா வாகனத்தை செயல்படுத்திப் பார்ப்பதில் எவ்வித சிரமமும் ஏற்படவில்லை என்கிறார் கார்ல்.

சிங்கப்பூரில் இடப் பற்றாக்குறையும், மனித வள பற்றாக்குறையும் நிலவுகிறது. இவ்விரு பிரச்சினைக்கு டிரைவர் தேவைப்படாத கார்கள் சிறந்த தீர்வாக அமையும் என்று கருதுவதாக சிங்கப்பூர் போக்குவரத்துத் துறையின் நிரந்தர செயலர் பாங் கின் கியோங் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.

டிரைவர் தேவைப்படாத கார்கள்தான் எதிர்கால சாலையை ஆக்கிரமிக்கப் போகின்றன என்பதற்கு இது ஒரு முன்னோட்டம் என்பதில் சந்தேகமில்லை.

SINGAPORE: The first non-stop flight connecting Singapore and San Francisco – and currently the only non-stop service between Singapore and the United States – took off from Changi Airport on Friday morning (Jun 3).

The United Airlines flight, which uses the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, takes between 15 hours and 30 minutes and 16 hours and 20 mins – shaving up to four hours off the travel time between the two cities.

The flights depart from Changi Airport at 8.45am daily and arrive at San Francisco International Airport at 9.15am the same day (local time). The westbound flight will depart San Francisco at 11.25pm (local time) daily and arrive in Singapore at 6.45am two days later.

Marcel Fuchs, the airline’s Vice-President of Atlantic and Pacific Sales, said that with 3,500 US companies registered in Singapore, there is strong demand for the flight.

“Many of the customers this morning were from IT companies and were congratulating us on starting this new daily non-stop service," he said.

சென்னை வெள்ள நிவாரணத்துக்காக சிங்கப்பூர் தமிழ் ஊடகங்கள் சார்பில் 2,14,000 சிங்கப்பூர் டாலர்கள் (இந்திய மதிப்பில் சுமார் ரூ.10 கோடி) நிதி திரட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது.
 இதுகுறித்து அந்நாட்டைச் சேர்ந்த "மீடியா கார்ப்' என்ற நிறுவனம் வெளியிட்ட செய்தி: சென்னையில் ஏற்பட்ட வரலாறு காணாத மழை வெள்ளத்துக்கு நிவாரணம் வழங்கும் பொருட்டு "மீடியா கார்ப்' நிறுவனத்தின் கீழ் இயங்கும் வசந்தம் தொலைக்காட்சியும், ஒலி பண்பலை அலைவரிசையும் நிதி திரட்டும் பணிகளில் ஈடுபட்டன. "லிட்டில் இந்தியா ஷாப்கீப்பர்ஸ்', "ஹெரிடேஜ் அúஸாசியேஷன்' உள்ளிட்ட நிறுவனங்களும் அந்தப் பணிகளில் இணைந்து பணியாற்றின.

Tiger Airways introduces one more flight to Singapore

With Tiger Airways augmenting its service in the Tiruchi – Singapore – Tiruchi sector, passenger and cargo movement to this South East Asian destination is poised to propel further.

The foreign airline launched an additional weekly service from Tiruchi to Singapore from the early hours on Tuesday in addition to its daily flight services being operated in the sector.

With this addition, the number of flight services to Singapore operated by this airline from Tiruchi would increase from 12 to 13 per week. The introduction of another service would mean augmentation of capacity both in respect of passenger and cargo movements to Singapore, say stakeholders. Among other foreign destinations, Singapore is a major market for exporters of the Tiruchi region.

Nearly 70 per cent of the volume of exports from Tiruchi is to Singapore with the commodities primarily shipped being vegetables and flowers in the available belly space in the flights.

Good trend

Going by the trends, airport sources say the cargo uplift would increase by 2.5 tonnes per flight with the introduction of the additional service by the Tiger Airways.

Most goods routed through the Kuala Lumpur-bound Air Asia flights by the exporters from here are directed to Singapore which is done through onward shipment from Malaysia, say the sources.

In addition to Tiger Airways, Air India Express is the other carrier operating daily flights in the Tiruchi – Singapore sector every day. The sources said there was heavy passenger patronage in the Air India Express flight to Singapore from Tiruchi.

The airport witnessed a spike in overseas travellers’ movement in 2014-15 fiscal crossing the 10 lakh mark. Overseas cargo movement also saw an upward trend from the airport during the last fiscal.

It's always good to be prepared with tissues and anti-bacterial gel for these occasions.

Singapore is incredibly sleek, clean, and cosmopolitan but this is mainly down to the strict rules it has governing its environment.

Chewing gum is banned in Singapore so being caught with it in your possession can lead to major embarrassment and possibly poverty - it carries a huge S$100,000 (£49,000, $74,517) fine.

Don't insult the food, even if it's chicken feet.

3. Playing with chopsticks

Ask any local what really irks them when it comes to dining etiquette and playing with chopsticks will come near the top.

சிங்கப்பூரில் வீட்டு வேலை செய்த பெண்ணுக்கு கரண்டியால் சூடு போட்டும் அடித்து உதைத்தும் கொடுமைப்படுத்திய இந்திய பெண்ணுக்கு சிறைத்தண்டனை விதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இந்திய வம்சாவளியைச் சேர்ந்த சுகந்தி ஜெயராமனும் (34), அவரது கணவரும் சிங்கப்பூரில் கடை வைத்துள்ளனர். இவர்களின் வீட்டில் மியான்மரைச் சேர்ந்த நாவ் மு டென் பாவ் என்ற 24 வயது இளம்பெண் வேலைக்கு சேர்ந்துள்ளார். அவரிடம் சுகந்தி கடுமையாக வேலை வாங்கியதுடன், சின்னச்சின்ன விஷயங்களுக்கெல்லாம் கொடூரமாக நடந்துகொண்டுள்ளார்.

கரண்டியை பழுக்க காய்ச்சி சூடு போட்டும், தாக்கியும் 3 மாதங்களுக்கும் மேலாக அந்த இளம்பெண்ணை சித்ரவதை செய்துள்ளார். ரத்தக் காயம் ஏற்பட்டு துடித்தபோதும் உடனடியாக சிகிச்சை அளிக்க ஏற்பாடு செய்யாமல், வேலை வாங்குவதிலேயே குறியாக இருந்ததாக குற்றம் சாட்டப்பட்டது.

“வேலை செய்த பெண்ணும் தன்னைபோன்ற மனித உயிர் என்று நினைக்காமல் ஏதோ நடமாடும் பொருள் போன்று நினைத்து, கொடூரமாகவும் மனிதாபிமானமற்ற வகையிலும் நடந்துகொண்டுள்ளார். காயம் ஏற்படுத்தும் அளவுக்கு அவரை அடிப்பதற்கு நியாயமான எந்த காரணமும் இல்லை” என்று நீதிபதி தெரிவித்ததாக உள்ளூர் ஊடகங்களில் செய்தி வெளியாகி உள்ளது.

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Airlines (SIA) was named the world's second best at the Paris Airshow on Tuesday (Jun 16). The award was given out by Skytrax, a consultancy and reviews site.

The Airline of the Year award was given to Qatar Airways. SIA gained one spot from last year to be ranked second, coming in ahead of last year's winner, Cathay Pacific Airways.

SIA also clinched other awards. It was voted Best Business Class Airline overall, as well as Best First Class Seats. Additionally, SIA's First and Economy Class categories both made it to the second spot on their respective lists.

The cabins of Singapore's national carrier were rated the second cleanest in the world behind EVA Air, while its cabin staff were named third best behind Garuda Indonesia and Cathay Pacific.

சிங்கப்பூர் மனிதவள மேம்பாட்டுத்துறை அமைச்சக தகவலின்படி சுமார், 4500 வெளிநாட்டு ஊழியர்கள் தங்களுக்கு உள்ள பிரச்சனையை தீர்த்துவைக்க கோரி புகார் அளித்து உள்ளனர் என்று தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. இதுவே கடந்த 2013ம் ஆண்டு சுமார் 3,600 ஊழியர்கள் புகார் தெரிவித்து உள்ளனர் என்று தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. இந்த வருடம் மட்டும் வெளிநாட்டு பணியாளர்கள் மையத்திற்கு மட்டும் 2,000 புகார்கள் வந்து உள்ளது. இவையனைத்தும் சம்பள பிரச்சனை மற்றும் நியாயமற்ற பிடித்தங்கள் தொடர்பானவையே என்று தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. சுமார் 60-சதவீதம் புகார்கள் நியாயமற்ற பிடித்தங்கள் மற்றும் சம்பளம் பிடித்து வைத்திருப்பது தொடர்பானவையே என்று தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது.

சம்பளம் விவகாரத்தில் வெளிநாட்டு ஊழியர்கள் சந்தித்துவரும் பிரச்சனையை தீர்க்க அமைச்சகம் நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க தொடங்கிஉள்ளது. அதிகமான புகார்கள் வந்து உள்ளதையடுத்து வெளிநாட்டவர்கள் சந்தித்துவரும் பிரச்சனைகளை தீர்க்க அவர்களுக்கு இடையே விழிப்புணர்வை ஏற்படுத்த முயற்சி செய்து வருகிறது. கடந்த வருடம் ஆகஸ்ட் மாதம் வரையிலான தகவல்களின்படி, சிங்கப்பூரில் 1.32 மில்லியன் வெளிநாட்டவர்கள் பணிசெய்து வருகின்றனர் என்று தெரியவந்து உள்ளது. இவர்களில் பெரும்பாலானோர் இந்தியா, வங்காளதேசம், சீனா மற்றும் தென்கிழக்கு ஆசியா நாடுகளை சேர்ந்தவர்களே, அவர்கள் கட்டிடம் மற்றும் சுரங்கத்துறைகளில் பணியாற்றி வருகின்றனர் என்று தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது.

மேகி நூடுல்ஸ் உணவுப் பொருட்களில் அளவுக்கு அதிகமாக காரீயமும், ரசாயன உப்பான மோனோ சோடியம் குளுட்டாமேட்டும் சேர்க்கப்பட்டு இருப்பதாக புகார்கள் எழுந்தன.இதைத் தொடர்ந்து மேகி நூடுல்ஸ் உணவுப் பொருட்கள் மீது பல்வேறு மாநிலங்கள் ஆய்வக சோதனை மேற்கொண்டன. அப்போது அவற்றில் உடலுக்கு தீங்கு விளைவிக்கும் ரசாயன பொருட்கள் அதிகம் சேர்க்கப்பட்டு இருப்பது உறுதி செய்யப்பட்டது.இதனால், நெஸ்லே இந்தியா நிறுவனத்தின் 9 வித மேகி நூடுல்சுகளையும் பாதுகாப்பற்றவை மற்றும் மனிதர்களுக்கு தீங்குவிளைவிப்பவை என்று கூறி மத்திய உணவு பாதுகாப்பு தர நிர்ணய ஆணையம் நாடு முழுவதும் தடை செய்து கடந்த வாரம் உத்தரவு பிறப்பித்தது.

Apple watch to be available in Singapore from June 26 -

SINGAPORE - Apple Watch will be available in Singapore from June 26, according to a press statement on Apple's website on Thursday.

Fans will be able to buy the smartwatch from Apple's online and retail stores, and selected authorised resellers.

Selected models of the Apple Watch will also be available from boutique store Malmaison by The Hour Glass in Singapore.

The watch will also be available in six other countries on June 26 - Italy, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland and Taiwan.

Public holidays of 2016 announced: Six long weekends next year -

SINGAPORE - Workers planning a getaway can look forward to six long weekends next year.

The Ministry of Manpower has released dates of public holidays for next year, with six of the 11 falling on a Friday, Sunday or Monday.

This is just one less than the bumper crop of seven long weekends this year, but up from an average of five in recent years.

When public holidays fall on a Sunday, it means the next day is a day off. This year, eight public holidays fall on Friday, Sunday or Monday - with Aug 7 declared a public holiday as part of Singapore's 50th birthday celebration, forming a four-day weekend.

Last year and the year before, there were four long weekends. There were five in 2012 and 2011, and seven in 2010.

There will also be a four-day weekend next year as the first and second days of Chinese New Year fall on Monday and Tuesday next year, similar to this year's, which fell on Thursday and Friday.

Long weekends give travellers the potential to go further afield using fewer days of leave.

Graphic designer Jason Fu, 26, said: "I will definitely make use of this to travel more. As I have only 15 days of annual leave, having long weekends matters to me."

Two of the public holidays next year fall on a Saturday - Vesak Day on May 21 and Deepavali on Oct 29.

Employees not required to work on Saturdays can claim a day off or compensation for that public holiday, if covered under the Employment Act.

Deepavali is also subject to change when the Hindu almanac becomes available. For this year, the Hindu Advisory Board has confirmed that Deepavali will fall on Nov 10 - a Tuesday - which was stated previously.

Companies here have various policies if the public holiday falls on a Saturday.

For example, at OCBC Bank, employees will be given a day off but they have to clear it within a month.

A Pan Pacific Hotels Group spokesman said that its staff will also get a day off, but they have three months to use it.

Public officers who work from Monday to Friday can also claim a day off for a public holiday falling on a Saturday, said the Public Service Division.

Changi Airport to open online shopping to arriving passengers Service now open only to departing fliers to be extended by year end

TRAVELLERS arriving at Changi Airport will soon be able to shop even before they land.

Their items will be packed and ready for collection at designated counters by the time they arrive.

Online shopping portal iShopChangi, which is now available only to passengers who are departing, will be extended to arriving passengers by the year end.

Payment will be made online.

This is to make shopping more convenient for travellers and boost retail takings.

Items for sale include cosmetics, perfumes, wines and spirits, Changi Airport Group spokesman Robin Goh told The Straits Times.

Travellers need not pay the 7 per cent goods and services tax as it will be absorbed by retailers.

"To serve customers better, we will also be looking at reducing the order cut-off from 24 hours to 18 hours before flight departure, giving shoppers a longer window to finalise their purchases," Mr Goh said.

Since the launch of iShopChangi in 2013, online sales and website traffic have increased by about 40 per cent, he said.

There are also more products, with about 6,000 items on offer now.

The airport's key perfumes and cosmetics retailer, South Korea's Shilla Duty Free, expects the number of online shoppers to increase.

"While online shopping is still not a big part of our business, we anticipate positive sales growth based on current trends," said a Shilla Duty Free spokesman without disclosing sales figures.

Popular online purchases include skincare brands such as Estee Lauder, SK-II, Clinique, Sulwhasoo and Laneige.

South Korean cosmetics are also very popular with locals and Chinese travellers, she said.

About half of the shoppers on iShopChangi are from Singapore, with the rest from other key markets, including Australia, Indonesia, China and India.

Launching online shopping and other initiatives to boost commercial takings, which help subsidise the cost of providing services to airlines and ground handlers, is an important part of Changi Airport's strategy.

Last year, the total sales from perfumes and cosmetics, as well as liquor and tobacco, hit about $900 million - about half of the airport's total annual receipts from shopping and dining.

Businessman Alan Wong, 56, said of iShopChangi: "It's a good idea to extend the service to arriving passengers.

"I travel quite a bit and when I get back, I prefer to just collect my luggage and leave instead of spending too much time browsing for perfumes and other gifts for my wife.

"Now, she can pick what she wants online and all I have to do when I get back is pick up the items."

சிங்கப்பூரில் பச்சிளங்குழந்தையின் உயிரைக் காப்பாற்றி நாயகர்களாக மாறியுள்ளனர் தமிழர்கள் இருவர். இந்த சம்பவத்தை படம்பிடித்து யூடியூபில் பதிவேற்றி உள்ளார் சிங்கப்பூர்வாசி ஒருவர்.

சிங்கப்பூரில் ஒரு வீட்டின் இரண்டாவது மாடியில், கம்பித் தடுப்பைத் தாண்டி வந்த பச்சிளங்குழந்தையின் கழுத்து, கம்பியில் மாட்டியது. மேலே எழ முடியாமல், கம்பியிலிருந்து விடுபடவும் முடியாமல் அந்தரத்தில் தவித்த அந்தக் குழந்தை கதறி அழுதது. குழந்தையின் அலறலைக் கேட்ட அக்கம்பக்கத்தினர் குழந்தையைக் காப்பாற்ற முயற்சி செய்துள்ளனர்.

இருவர், இரண்டாம் மாடிக்கு ஏற முயற்சித்தும் முடியாமல் போனது. இதனால் தீயணைப்புத் துறைக்கு தகவல் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டது. அப்போது அந்த பகுதியில் வேலை செய்து கொண்டிருந்த கட்டுமான தொழிலாளர்கள் இருவர் குழந்தையின் அலறலைக் கேட்டு அங்கு வந்தனர். உடனடியாக இருவரும் இரண்டாவது மாடிக்கு ஏறி, அந்தக் குழந்தையை கம்பியின் பிடியிலிருந்து விடுவித்தனர்.

தீயணைப்பு வீரர்கள் வருவதற்குள்ளாகவே குழந்தை காப்பாற்றப்பட்டது. ஏணியின் உதவியுடன் குழந்தை கீழே அழைத்து வரப்பட்டது. குழந்தை எப்படி அங்கு சென்று சிக்கிக் கொண்டது என்பது இன்னும் தெளிவாகவில்லை.

காப்பாற்றியவர்களில் ஒருவர் சென்னையிலிருந்து சிங்கப்பூருக்குச் சென்று வேலை செய்து வரும் சண்முகநாதன் என்று தெரியவந்துள்ளது. குழந்தையைக் காப்பாற்றிய இருவரையும் சிங்கப்பூர் அரசின் உள்நாட்டுப் பாதுகாப்புப் படை, 'உத்வேக மக்கள் விருது' வழங்கி கவுரவிக்கும் என்று தெரிகிறது.

61-year-old man finally passes taxi licence test after failing it for 79 times

  

SINGAPORE - A 61-year-old man has finally fulfilled his dream of becoming a taxi driver - after passing a required test on his 80th attempt.

The man, identified as Mr Shi Zhao Lin by evening daily Lianhe Wanbao, finally scored a pass on April 9 after failing the test 79 times. He scored 43 points, exceeding the minimum passing score of 40.

Mr Shi said he had struggled with the written test because of his poor command of English.

After his story was reported by Wanbao earlier this month, help came his way. A tutor offered to give him English lessons.

He was quoted as saying: "The tutor went through with me sample test questions, and highlighted the keywords I should pay attention to. Because of that, I had a better grasp of what I would be tested on and that helped me perform better in the test."

The Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) also approached him with training and employment opportunities. Mr Shi said he plans to take up a course at the institute to further improve his command of English.

He said he is expected to get his taxi driver's licence in about three week's time.

Mr Shi, who is now working as an aircon repairman, said he is hoping to raise the $1,000 deposit needed for renting a taxi.

There is no minimum educational qualification for those who wish to become a taxi driver. The Land Transport Authority, however, requires cabbies to be able to speak and write basic English.

Applicants must also pass a taxi driving course conducted by the National Trades Union Congress-linked Singapore Taxi Academy. The course covers topics like using the street directory, road safety and customer service exercises such as practising how to help passengers in wheelchairs.

After the classes, trainees have to pass a series of tests comprising multiple-choice questions, and show that they can handle wheelchairs properly.

Meet the mathematics professor behind 'Cheryl's birthday' puzzle -

SINGAPORE - The man behind the "Cheryl's birthday" viral poser is a mathematics professor from the National Institute of Education (NIE).

Dr Joseph Yeo Boon Wooi, who is in his 40s, is part of the panel for the Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiads (SASMO), the largest math competition here.

He helps set the questions each year for student "mathletes".

This year's competition took place on April 8. The puzzle in question was leaked, and subsequently posted on Facebook on April 11 by local TV presenter Kenneth Kong, who initially mistook it for a Primary 5 question.

Dr Yeo, a recipient of the prestigious Nanyang Excellence in Teaching Award in 2013 and first author of the New Syllabus Mathematics used in secondary schools, said he first chanced upon a Facebook post discussing the birthday logic problem on April 12.

But it did not ring a bell until he saw the photo of the question.

It has since been featured on international media such as The New York Times, The Guardian and the BBC, and was a top-trending story on US site Buzzfeed. On April 16, "Cheryl" even got her own cartoon on The New Yorker.

The Straits Times caught up with the media-shy math whiz and persuaded him to answer some questions about himself and how he came up with the viral hit that has confounded the world.

Dr Yeo's birthday, coincidentally (or not), falls on July 16 - the answer to the puzzle.

How did you come up with the question "Cheryl's birthday"?

I set the question based on guidelines given by SASMO.

This question, like all other questions we set, was vetted and approved by a panel of local and overseas experts from the SASMO Partners' League, which organises SASMO contests in their own countries.

"Cheryl's birthday" is not a new logic problem. There are various versions which others have modified. I am not aware of the original source. I modified it by changing the names, dates and context or storyline.

What do you think of the buzz it has generated?

I first saw someone on Facebook talking about the Cheryl's birthday logic problem on Sunday (April 12). It didn't ring a bell.

Then I saw a photo of the question. I was like, "Heh! This looks familiar!" I still cannot believe that the question has gone viral.

Which aspect of math do you specialise in?

I am a lecturer with the National Institute of Education. I specialise in training student teachers how to teach secondary school maths.

How did you develop your interest in maths?

It just comes naturally to me. I enjoy solving maths and logic problems.

செரிலின் பிறந்தநாள் எப்போது? எனும் அந்தக் கேள்விக்கு பதில் சொல்ல சில குறிப்புகளும் கொடுக்கப்பட்டிருந்தன. செரிலுக்கு ஆல்பர்ட் மற்றும் பெர்னார்ட் எனும் இரண்டு நண்பர்கள் இருப்பதாகவும், அவர்களிடம் செரில் தனது பிறந்த நாளுக்கான பத்து தேதிகளை கொடுத்ததாகவும், இருவரிடம் தனித்தனியே பிறந்த மாதம் மற்றும் பிறந்த தேதியை தெரிவித்தாகவும் அந்த குறிப்புகள் அமைந்துள்ளன.

SIA to operate charity flight for 300 disadvantaged people to celebrate SG50 -

SINGAPORE - Singapore Airlines (SIA) will be organising a special charity flight as part of its activities to mark Singapore's 50th birthday this year.

About 300 Community Chest beneficiaries, including children with special needs, adults with disabilities, as well as disadvantaged elderly and families, will get a three-hour return joy ride on the Airbus 380 superjumbo on May 29.

For many, it will be the first time on an aircraft, SIA said on Tuesday.

Apart from enjoying an in-flight meal service and entertainment system, beneficiaries will also be treated to special performances by SIA's cabin crew during the special flight.
