அழிவிலும் ஓர் ஆதாயம்!

சபரிமலையில் மண்டல, மகர விளக்குப் புனித யாத்திரைக்கான காலம் தொடங்கியிருக்கிறது. இன்னும் இரண்டு மாதங்களில் சரண கோஷங்களுடன் சபரிமலை சந்நிதானத்தில் லட்சக்கணக்கான பக்தர்கள் உலகின் பல்வேறு பகுதிகளிலிருந்தும் குழும இருக்கிறார்கள். நவம்பர் முதல் ஜனவரி வரையிலுள்ள மூன்று மாத காலத்தில் சபரிமலைக்கு வரவிருக்கும் அந்த லட்சக்கணக்கான ஐயப்பன்மார்களை எதிர்கொள்ளும்படியான முன்னேற்பாடுகள் அங்கே இருக்கின்றனவா என்கிற ஐயப்பாடு பரவலாகவே காணப்படுகிறது.

கடந்த மாதம் கேரளத்தைத் தாக்கிய பிரளயம் போன்ற அடைமழையும், பெருவெள்ளமும் சபரிமலையைச் சுற்றியுள்ள அத்தனை பகுதிகளிலும் மிகப்பெரிய அழிவை ஏற்படுத்தியிருக்கின்றன. சபரிமலைக்குச் செல்வதற்கு நுழைவாயிலாக இருக்கும் பம்பையில் மழைவெள்ளம் ஏற்படுத்தியிருக்கும் பேரழிவுகளைச் சொல்லி மாளாது. 
ஆயிரக்கணக்கில் கட்டப்பட்டிருந்த கழிப்பறைகள் இருந்த இடம் தெரியாமல் வெள்ளத்தில் அடித்துச் செல்லப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. பம்பையையொட்டி அமைந்த 4,000 பேருக்கு மேல் ஓய்வெடுக்க வசதியாக இருந்த ராமமூர்த்தி மண்டபம் இப்போது இல்லை. மூன்று மாடிக் கட்டடமான அன்னதான மண்டபம் மண்ணோடு மண்ணாகிவிட்டது. மின் கம்பிகளும், மின்மாற்றிகளும் வெள்ளத்தில் அடித்துச் செல்லப்பட்டு விட்டன. பம்பையில் இருந்த இரண்டு மாடிக் கட்டடமான அரசு மருத்துவமனை இடிபாடுகளுடன் காணப்படுகிறது. பம்பையிலும் சரி, திரிவேணியிலும் சரி, சுமார் 25 மீட்டர் உயரத்தில் மண் சரிந்து விழுந்து குவிந்து கிடக்கிறது. 

வடசேரிக் கரையிலிருந்து பம்பை வரையிலுள்ள சாலையில் மூன்று இடங்களில் சாலை அடித்துச் செல்லப்பட்டு, இருந்த இடம் தெரியாமல் மண் சரிவு ஏற்பட்டிருக்கிறது. சாலையில் பல இடங்கள் மலைச்சரிவினால் மண்ணால் மூடப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. மரங்கள் மட்டும்தான் இதுவரை முழுமையாக அகற்றப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. பாதுகாப்பு சோதனைக்குப் பிறகுதான் சாலைகளையும், கட்டடங்களையும் பயன்படுத்த முடியும் என்கிற நிலைதான் காணப்படுகிறது. 

இதுவரை பம்பை வரை அனுமதிக்கப்பட்ட போக்குவரத்தை இனிமேல் நிலக்கல்' என்கிற இடத்துடன் நிறுத்தி, அதை சபரிமலை புனித யாத்திரையின் தொடக்கமாக்க எடுத்திருக்கும் முடிவு வரவேற்புக்குரியது. பக்தர்களுக்குப் போதிய வசதிகளைச் செய்து கொடுக்க நிலக்கல்லில் தாராளமான இடவசதி உண்டு என்பது மட்டுமல்ல, ஆயிரக்கணக்கில் வரும் வாகனங்களை நிறுத்தவும் இடமுண்டு. நிலக்கல்லிலிருந்து பம்பைக்குக் கேரள அரசுப் போக்குவரத்துக் கழகம் தொடர்ந்து பேருந்துகளை இயக்குவது என்கிற ஆலோசனையும் வரவேற்புக்குரியது. 
தனியார் வாகனங்கள் நிலக்கல்லுடன் நிறுத்தப்படுவதும், நிலக்கல் பகுதியை முற்றிலுமாக திருவிதாங்கூர் தேவசம் போர்டு கையகப்படுத்தி, அங்கே ஐயப்பன்மார்களுக்கு எல்லா வசதிகளையும் ஏற்படுத்திக் கொடுப்பதும் சாத்தியம். பெருவெள்ளத்தால் ஏற்பட்ட அழிவைப் பயன்படுத்தி இந்த மாற்றங்களைக் கேரள அரசும், திருவிதாங்கூர் தேவசம் போர்டும் உடனடியாக நடைமுறைப்படுத்த வேண்டும். 
நிலக்கல்லில் தொடங்கி சபரிமலை சந்நிதானம் வரையில் கழிப்பறைகளை ஏற்படுத்துவது, குளியலறைகளை ஏற்படுத்துவது, ஆங்காங்கே குடிதண்ணீர் குழாய்களை நிறுவுவது என்பது மிகப்பெரிய பணி. கடந்த 70 ஆண்டுகளில் படிப்படியாக செய்யப்பட்ட அனைத்து முன்னேற்பாடுகளும் கட்டமைப்பு வசதிகளும் மழை வெள்ளத்தில் அடித்துச் செல்லப்பட்டுவிட்ட நிலையில், அடுத்த இரண்டு மாதங்களில் அவற்றையெல்லாம் மீண்டும் உருவாக்குவது என்பது நினைத்துப் பார்க்க முடியாத அசாதாரண சவால். போதாக்குறைக்கு மின் கம்பங்களை நிறுவி, மின்சார வசதியையும் ஏற்படுத்தியாக வேண்டும். இவற்றையெல்லாம் எப்படி எதிர்கொள்ளப் போகிறார்கள் என்று தெரியவில்லை.

பம்பையில் பாலம் கட்டும் பணி தொடங்கியிருக்கிறது. எவ்வளவு வெள்ளம் வந்தாலும் பாதிப்பு ஏற்படாமல் பம்பையைக் கடக்கும் வசதியிலான பாலம் ஒன்றைக் கட்டுவதுதான் திருவிதாங்கூர் தேவசம்போர்டின் இலக்கு. இதற்கான நிதி ஆதாரத்தைக் கேரள அரசு வழங்கியிருக்கிறது. 
பம்பையில் மட்டுமே ரூ.2,000 கோடிக்கும் அதிகமான இழப்பு ஏற்பட்டிருப்பதாகத் திருவிதாங்கூர் தேவசம் போர்டு கூறுகிறது. பம்பையிலும் நிலக்கல்லிலும் அடிப்படை வசதிகளை ஏற்படுத்திக் கொடுக்க மாநில அரசு பணம் ஒதுக்கித் தருவதாக இதுவரை உறுதியளிக்கவில்லை. உடனடியாக இதுகுறித்த நல்ல முடிவை கேரள அரசு எடுத்தாக வேண்டும். 

கேரள அரசு மட்டுமல்லாமல், தங்கள் மாநிலத்திலிருந்து லட்சக்கணக்கில் பக்தர்கள் செல்வதால், சபரிமலையின் மேம்பாட்டுக்காக தமிழகம், கர்நாடகம், ஆந்திரப் பிரதேசம், தெலங்கானா, மகாராஷ்டிரம் ஆகிய மாநிலங்களும் சபரிமலையின் மறு சீரமைப்புக்கு உதவ வேண்டும். இதற்காக, தனியாக ஒரு நிதியை ஏற்படுத்தி, பக்தர்களிடமிருந்து திருவிதாங்கூர் தேவசம்போர்டு நன்கொடை வசூலித்தாலும் தவறில்லை. 
சபரிமலைக்கென்று தனியாக ஒரு தேவசம் போர்டை ஏற்படுத்தி, அதில் தமிழகம், கர்நாடகம், ஆந்திரம், தெலங்கானா, மகாராஷ்டிரம் ஆகிய மாநிலங்களும் பங்குபெறும் நிலைமை ஏற்பட்டால், சபரிமலையின் கட்டமைப்பு வசதிகளை மேம்படுத்துவதும், சபரிமலையிலிருந்து கிடைக்கும் வருவாயை சபரிமலைக்கு மட்டுமே செலவிடுவதும் உறுதிப்படுத்தப்படும். அந்தந்த மாநிலங்களிலிருந்து வரும் ஐயப்பன்மார்களின் நலமும் வசதிகளும் பேணப்படும்.
ஜாதி, மத, இனப் பாகுபாடு இல்லாமல் பக்தர்கள் வருகின்ற தேசியப் புனிதத் தலம் சபரிமலை'. இது முற்றிலுமாக அழிந்திருக்கும் நிலையில், தெளிவாகத் திட்டமிட்டு சபரிமலையின் கட்டமைப்பு வசதிகளை மறுசீரமைப்பு செய்ய வாய்ப்புக் கிடைத்திருக்கிறது. அழிவிலும் கூட ஓர் ஆதாயம் இருக்கிறது என்பதைக் கேரள அரசு உணர்ந்து செயல்பட வேண்டும்.

நுகர்வோருக்கு லாபம்!

கடந்த 2017 மார்ச் மாதம் வோடஃபோன் குழுமத்தின் இந்தியப் பிரிவும், ஐடியா செல்லுலார் நிறுவனமும் இணைவது என்று எடுத்த முடிவு, கடந்த வாரம் தொலைத்தொடர்புத் துறையின் ஒப்புதலைப் பெற்றது.
இடைப்பட்ட 16 மாதங்களில் இந்தியத் தொலைத்தொடர்புத் துறையில் மிகப்பெரிய மாற்றங்கள் ஏற்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. வாடிக்கையாளர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை 117 கோடியிலிருந்தது, இந்த ஆண்டு மே மாத நிலவரப்படி 113 கோடியாகக் குறைந்திருக்கிறது. அதேபோல, இரண்டு இலக்க எண்ணிக்கையில் காணப்பட்ட தொலைத்தொடர்பு நிறுவனங்களின் எண்ணிக்கை இந்த இணைப்புக்குப் பிறகு நான்காகக் குறைந்திருக்கிறது. அதில், பி.எஸ்.என்.எல். அரசுத்துறை நிறுவனம். ஏனைய மூன்றும் தனியார் கார்ப்பரேட் நிறுவனங்கள்.

வோடஃபோன் - ஐடியாவில் மொத்த வாடிக்கையாளர் இணைப்புகள் 43 கோடிக்கும் அதிகமாக இருக்கும் என்று கருதப்படுகிறது. பார்தி ஏர்டெல்' நிறுவனம் 35 கோடி இணைப்புகளுடனும், ரிலையன்ஸ் ஜியோ நிறுவனம் 25.1 கோடி இணைப்புகளுடனும் இரண்டாவது இடத்திலும், மூன்றாவது இடத்திலும் உள்ளன. 

அரசு நிறுவனமான பி.எஸ்.என்.எல். தொடர்ந்து செயல்பட்டாலும் அதன் வாடிக்கையாளர்களின் எண்ணிக்கைக் குறைந்து வருவது மட்டுமல்லாமல், மூன்று தனியார் நிறுவனங்களுக்கிடையே நடக்கும் கார்ப்பரேட் யுத்தத்திலிருந்து அது விலகியே இருக்கிறது. இனிவரும் காலங்களில் மேலே குறிப்பிட்ட மூன்று நிறுவனங்கள் மட்டுமே வலிமையான தொலைத்தொடர்பு நிறுவனங்களாகச் செயல்படும் என்று கூறலாம்.

இரண்டு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு ரிலையன்ஸ் ஜியோ நிறுவனத்தை முகேஷ் அம்பானி தொடங்கியது முதல், இந்திய தொலைத்தொடர்புத் துறையில் மிகப்பெரிய புயல் வீசத் தொடங்கியது. 2016 வரையில் இலவசச் சேவை வழங்கி, அதைத் தொடர்ந்து மிகக்குறைந்த கட்டணத்தில் இணையதளம் உள்ளிட்ட சேவைகளை ஜியோ வழங்கத் தொடங்கியபோது, அனைத்துத் தொலைத்தொடர்பு சேவை வழங்கும் நிறுவனங்களும் செய்வதறியாது திகைத்தன. ரிலையன்ஸ் ஜியோ இப்போது 4 ஜி தொழில்நுட்பத்துடன் கூடிய ஜியோ செல்லிடப் பேசிகளைக் குறைந்த விலைக்கு விற்பனை செய்துவரும் நிலையில், எல்லா நிறுவனங்களும் தங்களது உத்திகளை மாற்றிக்கொள்ள வேண்டிய கட்டாயத்துக்குத் தள்ளப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன.

ரிலையன்ஸ் ஜியோ தன்னுடைய 4 ஜி தொழில்நுட்பத்துடன் கூடிய சேவையின் மூலம் ஒன்றரை ஆண்டு காலத்தில் 21.5 கோடி வாடிக்கையாளர்களை ஈர்த்திருக்கிறது. இதை எதிர்கொள்ள, ஏனைய நிறுவனங்கள் தங்களது சேவைக் கட்டணத்தைக் கடுமையாகக் குறைத்திருக்கின்றன. இணைப்புக்குப் பிறகு வோடஃபோன்-ஐடியா நிறுவனம் சில்லறை விற்பனையாளர்களுக்கு, வாடிக்கையாளர் தொடர்பான சேவைகளுக்குத் தரும் ஊக்கத்தொகையை இரட்டிப்பாக்கி இருக்கிறது.

வாடிக்கையாளர்களைக் கவர்வதற்கான போராட்டம் மேலும் அதிகரிக்கும்போது, ரிலையன்ஸ் ஜியோ நிறுவனம் அடுத்தாற்போல என்ன செய்யப்போகிறது என்கிற கேள்வி எழுகிறது. 

இந்தியாவின் தொலைத்தொடர்புத் துறையை மொத்தமாகத் தனது கைப்பிடிக்குள் கொண்டுவரும் முயற்சியில் ஈடுபட்டிருக்கும் ரிலையன்ஸ் ஜியோ நிறுவனத்தை எதிர்கொள்ள முடியாமல் இருந்ததால்தான் வோடஃபோன் இந்தியாவும் ஐடியா செல்லுலாரும் தனித்தனியாக செயல்படாமல் இணையும் முடிவுக்கே வந்தன என்பதை நாம் மறந்துவிடக் கூடாது.

வோடஃபோன் இந்தியாவும் ஐடியா செல்லுலாரும் ஏற்படுத்திக் கொண்டிருக்கும் இந்த இணைப்பின் விளைவாகப் பலருக்கு வேலை இழப்பு ஏற்படும். இரண்டு நிறுவனங்களுமே தங்களுடைய ஊழியர்களின் எண்ணிக்கையைக் குறைக்க முடிவெடுத்திருக்கின்றன. இணைப்பின் பயனாக இந்த நிறுவனத்திடம் 3 ஜி, 4 ஜி தொழில்நுட்பக் கருவிகள் தேவைக்கும் அதிகமாக இருப்பதும், அழைப்புக் கோபுரங்களின் (டவர்) எண்ணிக்கை அதிகரித்திருப்பதும், வாடிக்கையாளர்களுக்கான சேவை மேம்பாட்டை உறுதிப்படுத்துவதுடன் புதிய பகுதிகளைத் தங்களது தொடர்புக்குள் கொண்டு வரவும் உதவும்.

'ஓல்டு இஸ் கோல்டு' என்பார்கள். உண்மைதான். சில பழைய விஷயங்களை திரும்ப தூசி தட்டி மீட்டெடுக்கவே கூடாது. காரணம், சில சமயங்களில் அப்படி தூர்வாரி தூசிதட்டும்போது தங்கம் துருப்பிடித்த தகரமாகிவிடும் வாய்ப்புகளுண்டு - இந்த டயலாக்கிற்கும் இந்த பட விமர்சனத்திற்கும் சாமியின் மேலிருக்கும் ஸ்கொயர் சத்தியமாக தொடர்பில்லை. (படிக்கவே தலை சுத்துதா?... அப்போ இதை எல்லாம் ஹரி ஸ்டைல் ஃபாஸ்ட் பார்வேர்ட்ல பாத்த எங்களுக்கு எப்படி இருக்கும்?)

ஆடியன்ஸ் தவிர மீதி யாருக்குமே தெரிந்திருக்க வாய்ப்பில்லாத பெருமாள்பிச்சை பற்றிய தங்கமலை ரகசியத்தை தரையிறங்கிய இரண்டே நாட்களில் தெரிந்துகொள்கிறார், ராவண பிச்சை. அதன்பின் அவருக்கும் விக்ரமுக்குமான மோதல் சூடுபிடிக்கும் என நினைத்தால் அங்குதான் வெச்சுருக்காங்க ட்விஸ்ட். சடசடவென 28 ஆண்டுகள் ஃபாஸ்ட் பார்வேர்டாகி, 2031-ல்(???) நடக்கிறது கதை. அங்கும் ஒரு விக்ரம் இருக்கிறார். ஒரு பாபி சிம்ஹா இருக்கிறார். இவர்கள் இரண்டு பேரும் யார்?. ஆறுச்சாமிக்கு என்னாச்சு என்பதை சொல்லும் கதைதான் சாமி ஸ்கொயர்.

ஆறுச்சாமியாக விக்ரம். 2031-ல் இல்லை, நூறு ஆண்டுகள் கழித்துப் பார்த்தாலும்கூட மனிதர் அப்படியேதான் இருப்பார் போல. 'சாமி' முதல் பாகத்தில் பார்த்த அதே விக்ரம். எடையைத் தவிர எதுவும் மாறவில்லை. நடிப்பும் அதே எனர்ஜி மற்றும் துள்ளலோடு! ஆனால் விக்ரம் 'சாமி' முதல் பாகத்திற்குப் பின் நடிப்பில் வெவ்வேறு உயரங்களைத் தொட்டுவிட்டதால் அதே பழைய ஃபார்மெட் கதை அவருக்கேற்ற தீனியைத் தராதது போன்ற தோற்றம் ஏற்படுத்துகிறது.



'இவருக்குப் பதில் இனி இவர்' என்ற மெகாசீரியல் கான்செப்ட்டை சீக்வல் சினிமாக்களுக்கு கொண்டு வந்திருக்கிறார், ஹரி. ஆனால் த்ரிஷாவுக்கு பதில் ஐஸ்வர்யா ராஜேஷ் என்பது பொருத்தமில்லாத சாய்ஸாகவே இருக்கிறது. போதாக்குறைக்கு இயல்பாகவே அழகாக இருக்கும் அவரை மெனக்கெட்டு வெள்ளையாக்க முயன்று தோற்றிருக்கிறார்கள். மற்றொரு ஹீரோயினான கீர்த்தி சுரேஷ் மற்ற ஹரி பட ஹீரோயின்களைப் போலவே வருகிறார்... விழுகிறார்... விரட்டுகிறார்... விரட்டப்படுகிறார்!

காமெடியில் இது சூரிக்கு அடுத்த லெவல் படம். முன்பெல்லாம் கோபம் வருவதுபோல காமெடி செய்தவர், இதில் ஒருபடி மேலேறி கடுப்பைக் கிளப்பும் காமெடிகள் செய்திருக்கிறார். எரிச்சலில் ஆடியன்ஸ் கொடுக்கும் கவுன்ட்டர்களே பலமடங்கு பெட்டர். 1432-வது முறையாக சொல்கிறோம் சூரி! உங்களது ஸ்டைலை மாற்றிக்கொள்ளுங்கள் ப்ளீஸ்!

மற்ற அனைவரும் அடக்கிவாசிப்பதால் தனியாகத் தெரிகிறார், பாபி சிம்ஹா. அதே 'ஹே... ஏய்... ஏலேய்..' டைப் வில்லன்தான். ஆனாலும் ஆங்காங்கே அசால்ட் சேது தெரிவதால் ரசிக்க முடிகிறது. பிரபு, டெல்லி கணேஷ், ஜான் விஜய், உமா ரியாஸ், ரமேஷ் கண்ணா - படத்தில் இருக்கிறார்கள். அவ்வளவுதான்.

சூரியைப் போல ஹரியும் அடுத்த லெவல் பயணித்திருக்கிறார். முன்பெல்லாம் சீன்களில்தான் ஃபாஸ்ட் பார்வேர்டு மோடில் இருக்கும். இப்போதெல்லாம் கதையே 28 ஆண்டுகள் ஃபாஸ்ட் பார்வேர்டாகிறது. முதல் பாகத்தையும் இதையும் கனெக்ட் செய்யும் இடங்கள் எல்லாம் நன்றாக ஒர்க் அவுட் ஆகியிருக்கிறது.

சின்னச் சின்ன 'அட' ட்விஸ்ட்கள்தான் ஹரி ஸ்பெஷல். ஆனால் இந்தப் படத்தில் அப்படியான காட்சிகள் எதுவுமே இல்லை. முதல்பாதி முழுக்க இழுஇழுவென இழுத்தடிக்கும் திரைக்கதை. இரண்டாம் பாதியில்தான் ஹரியின் சாயல் தெரிகிறது. ஆனால் அதுவும் மிகப்பழைய சாயல். ஒரு கட்டத்தில் இது ஆக்‌ஷன் படமா, பேய்ப்படமா இல்லை டைம் ட்ராவல் படமா என்ற சந்தேகம் வேறு மூளைக்குள் வட்டமடிக்கிறது.

படம் முழுக்க யாராவது யாரையாவது அறைந்துகொண்டே இருக்கிறார்கள். கணக்குப் பார்த்தால் பட்ஜெட்டைவிட எண்ணிக்கையில் தாண்டும் போல. போதாக்குறைக்கு விக்ரமும் 'இப்போது கையைத் தூக்கியடிப்பது உங்கள் விக்ரம்' என விடாமல் ஸ்க்ரோல் போடுமளவிற்கு சண்டை போட்டுக்கொண்டே இருக்கிறார். படத்தின் மிகப்பெரிய மைனஸ் வசனங்கள். 'ஐ.ஏ.எஸ் மூளை.. ஐ.பி.எஸ் வேலை', நடந்தா ஒருவாரத்துல சாவ, ஓடுனா ஒரே நாள்ல சாவ' என அநியாயத்துக்கு அவுட்டேட்டட் வசனங்கள் காதைக் குடைகின்றன.

அதைத் தொடர்ந்து காற்றழுத்தக் கோளாற்றுக்கும் காது, மூக்கில் இரத்தம் வருவதற்கும் என்ன தொடர்பு என்று ''செய்தி" அறிய விரும்பியது.

தொலைபேசி மூலம் காது, மூக்கு, தொண்டை நிபுணர் டாக்டர். ரவி சேஷாத்திரியிடம் தொடர்பு கொண்டு பேசியது.

தொலைக்காட்சி சாகச நிகழ்ச்சியைப் பார்த்து வாயில் மண்ணெண்ணெய் ஊற்றி தீப்பற்ற வைக்க முயற்சித்தபோது பள்ளி மாணவர் தீயில் கருகி உயிரிழந்த சம்பவம் அதிர்ச்சியை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது.

சென்னை ஊரப்பாக்கத்தை அடுத்த ஐயஞ்சேரி பகுதியைச் சேர்ந்தவர் ஜான் வில்சன். இவர், தனியார் ஹோட்டலொன்றில் மேலாளராகப் பணியாற்றி வருகிறார். இவரது மனைவி செம்மஞ்சேரியில் உள்ள அரசுப் பள்ளியில் ஆசிரியையாகப் பணியாற்றி வருகிறார். இவர்களது ஒரே மகனான ஜெபின், சென்னை சேத்துப்பட்டில் உள்ள தனியார் பள்ளி ஒன்றில் 10ஆம் வகுப்பு பயின்று வருகிறார்.

காலாண்டுத் தேர்வு முடிந்து பள்ளி விடுமுறை தொடங்கியுள்ளதால், இன்று (செப்டம்பர் 22) வீட்டில் தனியாக இருந்தார் ஜெபின். அப்போது, தொலைக்காட்சி சேனல் ஒன்றில் ஒளிபரப்பான சாகச நிகழ்ச்சியை அவர் பார்த்ததாகக் கூறப்படுகிறது. அதனால் தூண்டுதலுக்கு ஆளான ஜெபின், வாயில் மண்ணெண்ணெய் ஊற்றி தீப்பற்ற வைக்க முயற்சித்துள்ளார். அப்போது எதிர்பாராதவிதமாக விபத்து ஏற்பட்டதாகக் கூறப்படுகிறது. உடல் முழுவதும் தீ பரவியதில் படுகாயமடைந்த ஜெபின், செங்கல்பட்டு அரசு மருத்துவமனையில் தீவிர சிகிச்சைக்காகச் சேர்க்கப்பட்டார். ஆனால், சிகிச்சை பலனின்றி அவர் உயிரிழந்தார். இது தொடர்பாக, கூடுவாஞ்சேரி போலீசார் வழக்குப் பதிவு செய்து விசாரணை நடத்தி வருகின்றனர்.

இதுதொடர்பாக சமூகச் செயற்பாட்டாளர் ஈசன் இளங்கோ அவர்களிடம் பேசினோம். அவர் கூறுகையில், “ஊடகங்களில் முன்பெல்லாம் இது மாதிரியான நிகழ்ச்சிகள் ஒளிப்பரப்பாகும்போது, இந்த நிகழ்ச்சிகளைச் செய்து பார்க்க வேண்டாம் என்று சமூக அக்கறையுடன் டைட்டில் போடுவார்கள். அது மட்டுமல்லாமல், ஊடகங்களுக்கு ஒரு கட்டுப்பாடு வேண்டும். “இது மாதிரியெல்லாம் செய்யாதீர்கள்; ரொம்ப ஆபத்தானது; வீட்டில் இருக்கிறவர்கள் தனியாக எதுவும் செய்ய வேண்டாம்” என்று சம்பந்தப்பட்ட நிகழ்ச்சியிலேயே சொல்வார்கள். அல்லது அந்த நிகழ்ச்சியின் அடியில் எழுத்தில் அந்த தகவல் இருக்கும். தற்போது இதுமாதிரி எதுவும் போடுவதில்லை” என்று தெரிவித்தார்.

தற்போது, ஊடகங்கள் பொறுப்பற்ற தன்மையோடு செயல்படுவதாகவும் குற்றம்சாட்டினார். “இது மாதிரியான சாகசங்கள் செய்தே ஆக வேண்டும் என்று எந்தவிதக் கட்டாயமுமில்லை. இதில் என்ன அவசியம் உள்ளது. இது போன்ற முட்டாள்தனமான விஷயங்களைச் செய்யக்கூடாது. இது மாதிரி செய்கிறவர்களை ஊடகங்களும் அங்கீகரிக்கக்கூடாது” என்றார் ஈசன் இளங்கோ.

Mylapore Ganapathy’s Uthukuli butter a big hit with customers

Chennai: The train carries this precious load of fragrant butter, coming from green pastures dominated by herds of herbivores including goats, sheep and buffaloes of Uthukuli, a taluk headquarters in Erode district of Tamil Nadu.

The train travels daily from Erode to Chennai central station. From here it is collected by the various retailers, who sell this either as butter or as ghee. In fact there was this only shop in Mylapore which was selling Uthukuli butter and ghee in the whole of Madras. Now there are a few more shops doing the same, though Saravanan warns that not everybody who offers Uthukuli butter outside on the board, is selling the same.

Ganapathy’s Butter and Ghee store is in a small lane off one of the Mada streets of the old and ancient Kapaleeswarar temple. Mylapore is at the heart of all that is quintessentially Chennai and the Ganapathy’s Butter and Ghee selling the fragrant Uthukuli butter and ghee became a landmark.

The shop continues to stand in the same place, a little bit modernised and better stocked than earlier days, with a lot more goodies. But you get the feeling of familiarity when you see the steady stream of buyers, considering that this shop has stood for seven decades. While it does speak of the age of the shop, there are now three generations of people who walk in, smile, call out by name and buy one or two things and return.

The shop was started by S. Ganapathy Pillai in 1942 and then they would sell butter and ghee and applams. “We continue to make our own ghee,” says grandson S. Saravanan, who along with his wife Sasikala and brother continue to look after the shop with great pleasure. He understands the historical aspect of the place, apart from continuing with a tradition thus keeping Chennaiites happy.

While the family continues to live on Adam street, earlier on they used to have 60 cows and they were into milk supply and curds. “There were no other players or packaged players. Certain people would make applams for us since this was a Brahmin locality,” says Saravanan. The shop is on Chitrakulam West street, near the ancient Kesava Perumal temple. It is close to South Mada Street and near the another ancient temple of Kapaleeswarar and Vallishwarar temple.

Getting directions are not difficult, even if you are near the Mylapore tank. But the streets are narrow, congested with shops all over the place, selling everything that you might need. In fact outside this ghee and butter shop is a small vegetable market with two and three wheelers whizzing buy, while four wheelers slow down a tad, because of all the turns and twists of the lanes.

G. Sankaran, S. Ganapathy's son, continues to be the proprietor, as the eldest son of the family and expanded the business by adding pickles to the list of items available then. “During Appa’s time, he would deliver milk, ghee, butter on his cycle” says Saravanan and adds that “I have been visiting the shop since my school days, let us say 1994-95,” with a smile.

Though there might have been a decline in the milk, butter and ghee business because of private players, Saravanan says, “Our business has improved and we are looking to expand,” adding “We have now a trademark and are registered as Mylapore Ganapathy’s.”

They now have 25 varieties of podis or powders to be eaten with rice. These are made of dals, leaves and various other things. Then there are a variety of ‘vadaams’ made from different pulses, which have to be deep fried and sometimes stand in good stead for a vegetable curry and 25 varieties of pickles, made of mangoes, lime and various other items. They are also thinking of a farm at Thingulur in Tirupur district near Uthukuli and Saravanan says “It will be an overnight journey.”

There is a comfort in coming to this shop, where the smell of butter along with the wafts of other spices, jaggery and something fried is dominating. It actually smells like the storeroom of your grandfather's house. Saravanan says that the same dairy merchant has been continuing to do business with them since his grandfather’s time and so the flavour of the butter and the ghee has not changed.

The making of ghee (clarified butter) from butter is a laborious process and takes close to three hours to make. “Earlier the ghee would be made in the store and this was like a strategy where we could attract the people to the shop,” says Saravanan. He is quick to add that they might continue this tradition and make ghee right in the shop at the next place they plan to set up. While the butter is being hand churned, “We make ghee the way you would do it at home. It is turned into ghee in brass vessels and 60 kgs of butter converts into 45 kg of ghee,” he adds. This is all done at their residence on Adam Street. But even Saravanan rues that “we do not get the smell anymore.”

He is also trying to move with the times which means stocking what people want, like organic stuff which would include wood pressed oil made at their Salem unit and where they use wood of the ‘vagai maram’ or commonly known as East Indian walnut. There is also groundnut oil and gingely with karupatti vellam or palm jaggery and virgin coconut oil. “There is a demand with people asking for these products and with my brother back we are trying to bring back the old times,” says Saravanan, who is now in expansion mode with his brother, Balaji, who was into banking. Balaji has quit banking and is focusing on online for the shop, home delivery and focusing on the second store.

While many think of Uthukuli as only cow ghee, Ganapathy’s is famous for its buffalo ghee also. The store gets about 30 kg of butter each day and of this only one fourth is cow butter. According to Saravanan, the flavour of the ghee made from the buffalo is better, and the ghee is also thicker since the fat content here is little higher.

“We owe our gratitude to our repeat patrons, most of whom have been our clients for several decades for three generations. They know that we believe in quality and that is why they continue to come to us,” says Saravanan.

Meanwhile Ayurveda is back in fashion, and it had always advised ghee in peoples’ diets and according to the good books cow ghee is more nutritious with more carotene and vitamins, while buffalo ghee has more fat, protein and calcium. And apart from those who come to the shop there are also those who are strict followers of this fragrant unguent and some have referred to the Uthukuli ghee as liquid gold.

Chennai: Student wins 10-year-long battle to get DTE certificate

Chennai: A girl student, who has been waging legal battle for over 10 years to get her DTE (Diploma in Teacher Education) course certificate, got a reprieve with Madras high court directing the director of government educations to publish her examination results immediately and issue the course certificate, besides paying her Rs 5,000 as cost to her in addition to Rs 5,000 cost already imposed by the consumer forum.

Justice S.S. Sundar gave the directive while dismissing a petition filed by the director, director of government examination, challenging an order of the district consumer disputes redressal forum, Salem.

After completing her plus-2, A. Rajewari joined DTE course in Rabindranath Tagore teacher training institute for girls in Salem district. She completed her first year course and secured 369 marks out of 450. When she was studying her second year DTE course in the year 2007, the institute terminated her on the ground that there was variation in total marks in the mark sheet produced by her and the aggregate marks secured by her.

Aggrieved, she approached the high court, which accepted her case that no correction has been made by her. The court also directed to issue fresh mark sheets to her and directed the institute to re-admit her in the second year course and allow her to complete the course.

Accordingly, she completed her second year course. But, results were not published by the directorate of public examination. Aggrieved, she approached the district consumer forum, which accepted her case and directed the authorities to publish her results and issue her course certificate, besides imposing a cost of `5,000. Challenging the same, the director of public examination filed the present petition.

Dismissing the petition, the judge said after considering the facts of the case, a positive direction was given earlier, which was binding on the director and his subordinates. Despite the order they have not published her results.

The petitioner has now filed this petition in utter disregard to the order of this court thinking that the issue once settled by this court in the earlier round of litigation, can be re-agitated. The direction of the consumer forum to pay Rs 5,000 towards the mental agony suffered by her was justified.

“This petition is pending from 2011 and it is stated that the petitioner has not published the results of the examination written by Rajeswari and hence the object of this petition is to circumvent the earlier order of this court,” the judge added and gave the above directive.

CHENNAI: Left with no other option to increase it’s revenue, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) is likely to increase price of monthly pass from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,300. Reliable sources have informed DC that, with fuel prices going through roof, the corporation has landed under severe financial crisis prompting officials to take such a decision.

Currently, MTC operates around 3,200 buses to various parts of the city and suburbs. After bus fare revision, the revenue dipped to Rs 2.3 crore against its previous Rs 2.85 crore per day. On an average, about 1,20,000 passengers per month are receiving such passes. Sources said that since such monthly passes will pave the way for commuters to travel any kind of MTC buses, except air-conditioned buses, the revenue has steadily declined forcing the officials to hike the cost of monthly passes.

“The transport department has already proposed to increase price of monthly passes. However, passengers have gradually been returning to MTC buses. Under such circumstance, the MTC is keeping such proposal under wraps,” said a close source to MTC. Since fuel price started shooting up, officials could anytime let the cat out of the bag, the source added.

M. Shanmugam, general secretary of Labour Progressive Federation, said, “if the transport department increases price of monthly passes, it would further reduce the revenue. Moreover, such move would reduce number of passengers opting for monthly passes.”

However, MTC officials are clueless. When sought for his comment, Anbu Abraham, managing director of MTC said “We have not received any communication regarding this from the state transport department. Further, it is a government’s policy decision.”

When asked about possibility of increasing price of monthly passes due to rising fuel price, the MD, responded, “anything can happen.”

CHENNAI: While upholding the 2010 orders of the Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum in Salem imposing a fine of Rs 5,000 on the Director of Government Examinations, Justice S S Sundar of the Madras High Court has imposed another Rs 5,000 cost on him for not complying with the earlier orders of the High Court.

Originally, one A Rajeswari studied Plus Two in Government Higher Secondary School in Jalakandapuram in Salem district and she was issued a marksheet as if she had secured 998 out of 1,200 marks in the higher secondary examination in 2005. Thereafter, she joined DTE course in the Ravindranath Tagore Teacher Training Institute for Girls at Veerachipalayam in December 2005 under the government quota. She completed the first year course and secured 369 marks out of 450. When she was studying second year, the institute passed an order in June 2007 terminating her on the charge that she had altered the marks in Plus Two exams.

Challenging the termination order, she filed a writ petition before the High Court, which accepting her submissions, set aside the order. The court also directed officials concerned, including DGE, to issue a fresh marksheet to her and to re-admit her for the second year course.

As per the orders, she completed the second year course. However, results were not published by the Directorate of Public Examination. Hence, she lodged a complaint with the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum, which in 2010 directed the authorities to publish the results and issue the documents - Plus Two marksheet, first and second year diploma marksheets along with diploma certificate -- and to pay Rs 5,000 to her for causing mental agony. The DGE then preferred the present plea.

Observing that the DGE had not published Plus Two exam results even after the orders of the Court and continued the litigation for the second time, the court dismissed the plea with another Rs 5,000 towards costs.

'Lack of attendance' forces final year IIT Madras student to commit suicide

A final year student of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras allegedly committed suicide Saturday by hanging from the ceiling of his room.

CHENNAI: A 23-year-old student of IIT Madras committed suicide by hanging himself in his hostel room late Friday night. His body was recovered in the morning after police broke open his door.

According to the police, Shahal Kormath, a resident of Malappuram district in Kerala, committed suicide because of an attendance lack and fears of not being allowed to take up final examinations. However, Kormath, has not left behind a suicide note.

Preliminary investigations revealed that IIT Madras had intimated Kormath's parents about the attendance lack, which resulted in Kormath being chided by family members. It is learnt that Kormath's brother, Fazil has told police that Kormath did not answer his calls on Friday.

Kormath, a post graduate student, pursuing Ocean Engineering was staying in a single occupancy room in one of IIT Madras' hostels. Fellow hostelites became suspicious after Kormath did not open his door on Saturday morning and informed the hostel warden. When Kotturpuram police broke open Kormath's door, they found him hanging from a noose fastened to the ceiling fan.

Kormath's body was taken to the Royapettah Government Hospital for autopsy and police have registered a case under section 174 of CrPC (Unnatural death).

He said that he had learnt about the chairman’s sexual misconduct and also seen the video footages. Students of the colleges, the chairman runs, had also staged a protest.

Given the fact that a number of girl students study there, the court should order a suo-motto inquiry and also direct the police to register a case.

Doctors booked for forgery: DME to send report to Health Secretary

The Directorate of Medical Education will report to the Health Secretary on the case registered against two doctors of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on charges of forging documents for the bail plea of accused in a drug case.

S. Usha, senior civil surgeon, and Mansoor were booked for offences including cheating and forgery.Another doctor named T.C.R. Ramakrishnan is also among the list of accused.

Director of Medical Education A. Edwin Joe said that the dean of CMCH had sent him news reports on the case registered against the two Government doctors.

“No disciplinary action has been initiated against the doctors as of now as they were not arrested for the charges. If arrested, they will naturally be suspended from service on completion of 48 hours.

Reports on the case will be sent to the Health Secretary,” said Dr. Joe.

The two doctors, M. Zakaria, counsel of the accused, and Mohammed Shahib, brother of the accused, were booked based on an order issued by C. Sanjai Baba, judge for Essential Commodities Act Court. The order was made after the court found that Zakaria produced forged documents before it along with the bail plea of Muhammed Shikas (22) of Saibaba Colony, an accused in an opioid drug case.

Shikas was arrested along with Joy Immanuel (28) of Begaluru, Sulfikar Ali (24) of Kuniyamuthur and Mohammed Anas (24) of Ukkadam in July this year.

Initiative expected to ease stress, help in reformation

The State could soon see the rollout of a novel initiative to ease the tension and frustration among prisoners who are languishing in various correctional facilities if the government approves a proposal sent by Additional Director General of Police and Inspector General of Prisons Ashuthosh Shukla.

Nudged by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, Mr. Shukla has suggested that they be granted leave so that they can undertake conjugal visits.

Said Mr. Shukla: “Recently, the court observed conjugal visits may lead to strong family bonding, and a few countries have already recognised this as the right of the prisoners. As part of reformation and correctional behaviour, we also suggested amendment of Rule 20 of the Tamil Nadu Suspension of Sentence Rules, 1982, so that conjugal visits can be treated as one of the grounds for leave.”

Authorities believe that conjugal visits may not only inculcate good behaviour among prisoners but also help fight cases of HIV and sexual offences which are quite rampant in prison campuses.

At present, prisoners get ordinary leave on the following grounds: to make arrangements for the livelihood of his/her family; for settlement of life after release; for admission of children in school or college; for construction or repairing the homestead; to make arrangements or to participate in the marriages of sons, daughters, full brothers or full sisters; for settling family disputes like partition and for undertaking agricultural operations like sowing and harvesting. They can also avail leave for other extraordinary reasons.

“We will add conjugal visit as a ground for leave in the Tamilnadu Prison Manual. We are also planning to introduce a video-conference facility for the interview of prisoners [by the family]. Such facilities will connect the prisons with the taluk office,” said Mr. Shukla.

At first glance, commerce and sociology make strange bedfellows. One deals with economics, business studies and accountancy, the other, with human social relationships and institutions.

But sociology could give commerce students insights into how markets function and the importance of family structure in businesses. It is with this in mind that the Education Department has decided to offer pre-university commerce students the option of studying sociology from the next academic year. The Department of Pre-University Education (DPUE) had received a representation from sociology lecturers on the matter. C. Shikha, director of the department, said the decision was taken based on the suggestions of an expert committee formed to look into the representation.

Starting next year, those taking commerce, besides studying accountancy and business studies, can choose sociology as one of two other subjects. Students in this stream have four core subjects and two languages.

The option of studying sociology will be useful as the commerce stream has the most strength when compared to other streams, said Ms. Shikha. “The demand also came from the sociology lecturers who said they did not have sufficient workload and had to teach only 10 hours a week,” she added.

The move has been welcomed by both lecturers and students. Several colleges — both government and private — have decided to introduce the subject for commerce combinations for the 2019-20 academic year.

“Concepts such as industrial relations, how the family structure is linked to business enterprises, and learning about markets from a sociological perspective, are important in the commerce stream. Commerce students must have a background in social science in order to grasp concepts in a more nuanced fashion,” said Purushothama G.S., coordinator, II PU textbook committee and sociology lecturer.

Q. Pressure and expectations – currently these must be the most tossed around words around you. Right?

Yes, questions around these are asked. Like how do you feel with all these expectations being a star kid? ‘Pressure’ and ‘expectations’ float in my dreams as well. (Smiles) Main toh bindaas kaam kar rahi thi… abhi pata chala there’s no scope for silver. You’ve got to be gold in the first go. But I got this opportunity. That’s big deal for me. If this is a by-product of that chance, I’ll take it. I’ll work harder if I must the next time…if there’s a next time.

Q. Reportedly, your parents were taken aback when you told them you wanted to join the movies...

They thought I’d lead the lazy life. They were protective about me. Their attitude was that they’ve worked hard so I should have it easy. But I wanted a fulfilling experience from my life. I wanted to prove myself. My parents have made me so proud and happy. Now, I wanted to make them proud.

Q. You seem quite sorted for your age.

That’s another thing I’m particular about. I don’t want to take myself too seriously. There are people doing many more important things in life. I’m getting to do what I love – I’m lucky. I can’t act important. Kya ukhaad rahi hoon main yahan baith ke (what great work am I doing)?

Q. Please go on...

I like someone bringing me back to earth. During a film’s promotions, everyone makes you feel like you’re the most important person. They want to know what you’re eating, when you’re sleeping, what you’re thinking. But it’s all khokla (meaningless). It doesn’t mean anything. Your work is what matters. This just comes with the hype of the film. If it does well, maybe it’ll last longer. If not, then you need to go out and prove yourself again.

Q. Were you nervous when your mom attended the first day of your shoot?

I wasn’t nervous at all in front of Shashank (Khaitan) or the crew. But when Mom was on set, I was nervous. I was doing this to make her proud and didn’t want to give her any reason to say that you should’ve done it this way. She gave the first clap. She saw the take and was happy with it. She said a lot of wonderful things after seeing the rushes. The only advice she gave me was not to wear any make-up in the second half. She also asked me to put my chin down because sometimes it looks like I have a double chin.

Q. People on the set mention they saw two Janhvis during the shoot – before and after the unfortunate demise of your mother…

I guess I could understand the emotions in my character better. I had been through something emotional. It just gave me a new perspective. There’s a sense of responsibility now. I have my father, my sisters (Khushi and Anshula) and my brother (Arjun Kapoor) but there’s a sense of having to fend for myself. Because the way mom was, we never had to think for ourselves. She would think for us. I always knew someone was thinking of me. She did it more than a normal mother would. She was so hands-on.

Q. Are you emotionally settled now?

No. I haven’t got around the acceptance stage yet. It’s just that there hasn’t been time or I haven’t allowed myself the time to come to terms with everything. There’s a stage of denial that we’re all going through. I wanted to shoot the next day (after the cremation). But the shoot got cancelled. I was like, “No, I must go back, I need to be on the set.” I thought I was going to lose my mind if I didn’t do that.

Q. What are the things that you miss about her the most?

I’ve so many random memories of her. Every morning, we had this tradition. Dad, mom and I’d sit in the living room and discuss random things. Khushi would always be sleeping. Papa would bully mom and she would pull his leg... She’d force Papa to have around 10 juices.

I remember in our Chennai house, she’d play old AR Rahman songs. She’d place flowers all around the house. She’d go to Papa’s study and sit on his lap. She’d feed him. She’d make sure he ate well – things like prawn biryani and then she’d crib about his weight. She’d always be there to see off Khushi and me. She’d go to the fish market and buy fresh fish for us. I miss… these small things.

Q. Are things different at home now?

There’s a new family dynamic at home. We were always close to one another. But now we’re closer. Dad has been the mother in these last few months. He’s been so hands-on. It’s not just him, there’s a new family dynamic with Arjun bhaiya (Kapoor) and Anshula didi. They’ve been an immense source of strength and support. As a family unit, we’ve become much stronger. Even though we’re in a confused space, we’re protective of one another.

Ever thought why a good night’ s sleep is incredibly important for your health? A new study has found that regular bedtime and wake time may help you revive yourself and boost your heart and metabolic health.

The study found that people with irregular sleep patterns weighed more, had higher blood sugar, higher blood pressure and a higher projected risk of having a heart attack or stroke within 10 years than those who slept and woke at the same times every day.

People with irregularity in sleeping pattern were also more likely to report depression and stress than regular sleepers, suggests the study, published in the journal Scientific Report.

“From our study, we can’t conclude that sleep irregularity results in health risks, or whether health conditions affect sleep. Perhaps all of these things are impacting each other,” said lead author Jessica Lunsford-Avery, assistant professor at the Duke Health in Durham.

For the study, the research team involved 1,978 older adults aged between 54 and 93. They used devices that tracked sleep schedules to learn whether even subtle changes — going to bed at 10:10 pm instead of the usual 10pm — were linked to the health of participants.

The study also tracked the duration of participants’ sleep and preferred timing — whether someone turned in early or was a night owl.

According to these measures, people with hypertension tended to sleep more hours, and people with obesity tended to stay up till late.

The team also found that people with irregular sleeping habit experienced more sleepiness during the day and were less active — perhaps because they were tired.

The researchers are planning to conduct more studies over longer periods in hopes of determining how biology causes changes in sleep regularity and vice-versa.

Diabetics can have fruits, tablets during NET: UGC notification

Diabetics taking up the National Eligibility Test (NET) can have fruits, water and sugar tablets in the exam hall, a recent University Grants Commission (UGC) notification has stated.

The UGC notification on NET 2018 states that diabetic students will be allowed to carry sugar tablets, fruits like banana, apple and orange, and transparent water bottles to the exam hall. “However, they will not be allowed to carry packed food like chocolate, sandwich and candy,” read the notification.

The NET exam is mandatory for aspiring assistant professors and junior research scholars. The test is slated go online this time and will be held in December. For the first time, the National Testing Agency (NTA) is conducting NET on behalf of the UGC this year.

Candidates applying for the exam were surprised to see one of the entries that read, “Are you diabetic?” Taken aback, some of the students even wondered if they should get themselves tested for diabetes before filling up the application.

Prior to this, since 2016, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has been allowing diabetic JEE applicants to carry fruits, water and sugar tablets to the exam hall to make sure candidates on insulin needn’t worry about a sudden drop in their sugar levels while writing the exam.

Given that there are chances of diabetic candidates suffering from a sudden drop in sugar levels, thus hampering their concentration and performance in exams, this notification by UGC will help such candidates overcome their limitations.

Welcoming the move, Dr Satish Kumar, endocrinologist, founder of Ameya Healthcare, who has long been advocating to make educational institutions diabeticfriendly, said UGC had taken a very important step.

“Many patients battling diabetes do not want to disclose their illness. Sometimes they suffer from low sugar levels when they are away from home, and this can turn out to be problematic. This step by the UGC is very positive. It might even encourage many diabetic candidates to appear for tough competitive exams. It should ideally be replicated by all examination boards,” he added.

Applications for NET 2018 can be filed only online; September 30 is the last date. The test is scheduled to be conducted between December 9 and 23, officials said.

The examination will be conducted in two shifts, from 9.30am to 1pm and from 2pm to 5.30pm. The exact date and shifts will be available by October 21on the NTA website.

IIT Madras suicide: Student did not seek professional counselling

The one thing Shahal Kormath should have done about his angst has to have walked into the counsellor clinic on the IIT-M campus.

The 23-year-old, who ended his life in his hostel room on Saturday, had been doing a dual degree in naval architecture and had passed seven semesters without much trouble. But when his performance dropped in the eighth semester, he requested professors not to inform his parents. In the next semester, he did not improve and fell short of attendance. “Most students who join IIT clear very tough entrances. Most of the time there is a strong reason for performances to drop. His friends and he did not realise they wouldn’t be able to handle problems without professional help,” said director Baskar Ramamurthi.

When a system-generated mail about his poor attendance was sent to his parents with a copy marked to him earlier this week, he panicked. “We did not suspect anything because he has been speaking to his friends and brother,” Ramamurthi said.

Students said they were told not to speak to the media. “It is not one isolated incident that led to his death. It is a combination of many things including academic pressure, personal and family issues. Such deaths are extremely difficult to handle for his hostel mates and friends,” said a second year student, speakingon condition of anonymity.

Psychiatrists warn that suicides on campuses often happen in clusters.

“We call it copycat syndrome. One suicide can trigger many others...,” said Dr Lakshmi Vijayakumar, who was part of the task force appointed to investigate suicides in IITs and centrally-funded educational institutions. At least four students ended their lives at IIT-M in 2015-16. “Administrators should ensure it doesn’t happen again,” she said.

The first step to prevention, she said, was being open about the facts. When an incident is truthfully described there is less room for rumours.

And this should be followed with meetings where students are asked what they would do in similar situations. “This will give them the confidence to deal with problems or at least seek professional help.”

An IIT-M professor said they would hold a condolence meet where his friends and others would speak on how they would deal with the issue.

“We will also speak to his close friends individually. But overall, we will be telling students that they should not be scared or shy to ask for help,” he said.

Plagiarising TN varsity students to lose degrees, profs guideship

A student of the University of Madras or any of its affiliated colleges found guilty of plagiarism after completion of degree may, from the coming academic year, lose it for a certain period or have the registration cancelled if found resorting to the practice during a programme. Professors found guilty of the offence would lose their guideship for a period of three years and have two annual increments lopped off. Repeat offenders could face suspension or termination.

These are some of the guidelines adopted by the university syndicate at a meeting earlier this week, more than a month after the University Grants Commission (UGC) gazetted its academic integrity regulations in August.

Vice-chancellor P Duraisamy told TOI that the syndicate resolution would also be placed before the academic council later this month and before the senate next month for ratification.

The UGC had recommended graded penalties for similarities up to 10%, 10%-40%, 40%-60% and above 60%.

Univ guidelines mandate a panel to probe plagiarism

University of Madras, however, has decided that for all science disciplines, 20% similarity would be acceptable. For humanities and mathematics, up to 30% similarity would be acceptable.

The rest of the graded penalty levels would be applicable as per the guidelines as mandate by the UGC. For instance, a student found to have plagiarised a report or thesis up to 40% will be allowed to submit a revised script within six months. If it is between 40% and 60%, he/ she would be debarred from submitting a revised script for a year.

For professors, it’s more stringent. A plagiarism level of 40%-60% would mean losing an annual increment and guideship for two years. A manuscript that is found to have been copied by up to 40% would be withdrawn. The plagiarism percentage is checked by the Urkund software that has been in place at the university for more than a year now.

The guidelines mandate that the university form a departmental Academic Integrity Panel (DAIP) which will consist of heads of department, a senior academician and a subject expert. This would investigate allegations of plagiarism against a student, researcher, faculty or staff. The DAIP would have powers to assess the level of plagiarism and recommend penalties, within a period of 45 days from receipt of complaint.

The university will also form a Institutional Academic Integrity Panel (IAIP) headed by a dean or the vice-chancellor which shall consider the recommendations of DAIP, acting as an appellate authority.

Professors say this guideline would give the university teeth in acting against academically corrupt professors and students. In the case of Professor T Santhanam, a former principal of DG Vaishnav College who was found guilty of plagiarism last year, the university had to send his thesis to an external subject expert for verification. Now, it can be checked within the university.

IIT-M student ends life, but hasn’t left any suicide note

A 23-year-old student of IIT-Madras was found dead in his hostel room on Saturday morning. Police said he had hanged himself, but did not leave a suicide note. Shahal Kormath, who hailed from Manjeri in Kerala’s Malappuram district, was a final year student of the B Tech-M Tech (Dual Degree) naval architecture programme. A friend raised the alarm around 8am when Shahal did not answer the door. He alerted hostel warden Raguram Reddy who informed police.

Kotturpuram police broke open room 121 to find Shahal hanging from a noose tied to the ceiling fan. Police have sent the body to Government Royapettah Hospital for an autopsy.

Sources, requesting anonymity, told TOI that Shahal had been facing problems due to attendance shortage. IIT director Baskar Ramamurthi said “Kormath was not a topper but he did not have backlogs for the first seven semesters.”

‘Student’s performance dropped last semester’

The institute’s director Bhaskar Ramamurthi said, “His performance dropped in the last semester.We advised him to go for counselling but he decided to take help from his friends. That did not work.”

The IIT administration had informed his parents that he was short of attendance this semester. Subsequently, his brother in Bengaluru called and chided him. On Friday alone, Shahal apparently received several calls from his brother Fazil Kormath. Fazil told the Kotturpuram police that his brother had refused to answer when he called later to apologise for yelling at him.
