Kolkata : Jadavpur University has decided to proceed with its convocation scheduled for Tuesday despite Governor and Chancellor CV Ananda Bose sending a letter on Monday morning, questioning the legal propriety of interim VC Bhaskar Gupta to do so. The university on Monday issued a notice, stating that it would hold the court meeting on Tuesday. JU also sent a letter inviting the chancellor to chair Tuesday's court meeting. But in a letter sent to JU at 9.30 pm, the governor-chancellor said JU did not give sufficient time before convening the meeting.

Educational minister Bratya Basu wrote on his X handle: “The convocation of a university like Jadavpur University is a sacrosanct event for the students and the faculties of that institution and it has been held on Dec 24 for a very long time. One does not play with the conventions and the heritage of such an institution. Moreover, due process of law has been observed as far as practicable and nothing that benefits the students can be withheld indefinitely.” A senior official said: “JU has a tradition of holding convocation on December 24. Since degrees are awarded on this day, it is an important event in a student's life. So the university will hold the court meeting and the convocation on Tuesday.”

Bose, in his letter, reminded JU of its acts and statutes. "The conduct of a VC should be in conformity with the Acts and Rules, and he should avoid unlawful actions which could lead to unnecessary litigations affecting the validity of the degrees," read his letter. State govt nominee to the Executive Council (EC) and English HoD Manojit Mandal, said the VC has proceeded with the convocation under the direction of the EC. JUTA GS Partha Pratim Ray supported the decision to hold the convocation.
