TIMES OF INDIA .....LUCKNOW 27.12.2024

Lucknow : The microbiology department of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) will investigate the effectiveness of drugs in treating viral hepatitis and identify new viral markers. This announcement was made by department head Prof Amita Jain during the 38th foundation day event held on Thursday. Prof Jain explained that viral hepatitis is of two types, one that spreads through contaminated food or water, and the other through infected blood.

“The timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial for controlling the disease. Families of affected individuals and newborns of infected mothers need extra caution. Under the National Hepatitis Program, the department is actively conducting tests and planning to introduce new markers soon. A comparative study of liver cirrhosis patients using fibroscan reports is also in progress,” Prof Jain said. Dr Ekta Gupta from Delhi’s Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences emphasised the need for awareness, timely diagnosis, and research on new markers and drugs.

KGMU vice chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand inaugurated the event, where outstanding contributors were honoured. Prof Sheetal Verma highlighted the risks of blood-borne hepatitis, urging caution in using shared razors or blades. The event also commemorated former head Prof Asha Mathur, with her family receiving a special honour. TNN
