The online courses contain video lectures and self-assessment tests

Periyar University has proposed to introduce Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) from the next academic year (2018-19) to enable the students to compare the course content with the eminent faculties across the country, Vice-Chancellor of Periyar University P. Kolandaivel said here on Wednesday.

The students of the university departments will have to take two online courses for eight credits compulsorily. All the master level students must enrol and complete the two courses in the Swaayam and Swayam Prabha- related to their discipline of study in the respective University departments, Prof. Kolandaivel said while speaking at the Swayam-awareness-cum orientation programme on the university campus.

The awareness programme was brought up by the Swayam cell of the Periyar University for the mentors representing each of the university departments.

With the motto line of “no age, mo boundaries, now no more limitations”, the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has introduced 17 types of online courses. Swayam and Swaayam Prabha are two such notable programmes intended to take the best teaching learning resources to all, including the most disadvantaged. These initiatives have been envisioned to bridge the digital divide preventing them from joining the mainstream of the knowledge economy, the Vice-Chancellor said.

Prof. Kolandaivel said that the University Grants Commission has taken serious steps to improve the quality of higher education in India. Through the courses under Swayam programme students can evaluate the best course content and the faculty members and choose from among them. This initiative will provide better learning opportunity to the students to expand their horizon of knowledge

The online courses contain video lectures, specially prepared reading materials, self-assessment tests and online discussion forums.

Dr. Kolandaivel said that Periyar University will revise the curriculum and syllabi accommodating the MOOC courses..

V. Krishnakumar, Dean, explained the modus operandi of the course enrolment and nature of examinations. R.Subramaniya Bharathy, University Swayam cell, offered felicitations.

CHENNAI, April 12, 2018 00:00 IST

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has warned candidates against blocking the All India Quota (AIQ) seats in the second round if they had no intention of joining the institution.

Such an act would be considered a criminal offence and if evidence is found against candidates, legal action would be initiated, according to a notice posted on the website of the Directorate General of Health Services.

The notice reads: “MCC/MoHFW is receiving a lot of complaints from students regarding active participation of some groups of students who are likely to block AIQ seats in the second round deliberately for financial gratification without [any] intention of joining them. This amounts to a criminal offence. Such students will be identified, and if credible evidence of seat blocking by cartelisation is found, legal action will be taken against them. The nearly one thousand students who have not joined after the first round have been identified and their future course of action during the second round is being monitored closely.”

HC orders relief for wife of accident victim

In a special gesture, the Madras High Court has ordered compensation to the wife of an accident victim, even though he had only suffered injuries and had not lost his life.

The court held that women were entitled to separate monetary compensation if their husbands became incapacitated. A Division Bench of Justices S. Vimala and S. Ramathilagam held thus after suo motu including M. Mythili, wife of motor accident victim Mohankumar of Vellore, as one of the claimants, and directing an insurance company to pay her Rs. 5 lakh, apart from the Rs. 68.82 lakh ordered to be paid to her husband, along with interest at the rate of 6% per annum.

The judges said they could imagine the trauma his wife would have undergone on account of him having being pushed to a vegetative state.

“In such a scenario, the role of the spouse increases manifold; not only [does] she act as his guardian, but also has to adorn the role of a mother, an attender and what not... The injured and his wife are deprived of their conjugal relationship even while alive, which is more cruel than bearing the pain of death. The case on hand not only evokes judicial sympathy but also compassion...The tentacles of judicial activism should reach and alleviate the suffering of persons who seek justice at the hands of this court. Therefore, this court deems it fit and proper that both the claimant and the spouse are compensated,” the Bench said.

Daytime temperature would largely remain normal
Some parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, are likely to experience thundershowers for the next two days. The temperature during the day may remain close to normal in many districts.

The prevailing cool easterlies and a trough in easterlies from the Comorin area to south interior Karnataka across interior Tamil Nadu would bring thundershowers to some parts of the State.

On Monday, Chennai woke up to a cloudy sky, and the weather stations in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 34.4 degrees Celsius and 35 degrees Celsius respectively, which is normal for the season.

However, Chennai residents experienced sultry weather due to a slightly higher level of humidity. Officials of the Meteorological department said the same moderate weather trend might continue till the weekend. A generally cloudy sky would ensure a normal day temperature of 34 degrees Celsius till Friday over Chennai. However, nights would be slightly uncomfortable, with minimum temperature touching 27 degrees Celsius. There are chances for thunderclouds to develop towards the evening or the night, officials said.

S. Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Chennai, said it is usual for thunderstorms to develop as an impact of convective activity during summer.
