: Hostel residents of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) have written to the ministry of human resource development seeking its intervention to allow students to stay on in the hostel during the lockdown. The students claim that the university administration has asked them to vacate and leave for their hometowns in 48 hours.
The students claim that while the order of ministry of home affairs says that if a group of stranded persons wish to move between one state/UT to another, the BHU administration has issued an order for students to vacate and leave for hometowns within 48 hours. The students said that the words “wish to move” in the MHA order indicates that it is up to the stranded person whether he/she wishes to travel.
Stating that many students want to continue in the hostels instead of travelling in the current scenario, they in a letter to Amit Khare, secretary, higher education, MHRD, said: “Students are in panic and deep stress. This is really very unsafe for us to think of travelling when the cases of this pandemic is on the rise at this period in the country. I would request you to ask the vicechancellor of BHU not to force students to vacate hostels. Those students who wish to stay on campus may be allowed to stay and necessary arrangements be made for this.”
